    After i finished the Camino last Sept.2023... i looked into this more as i suffered a great deal of pain doing this long walk at 70...hips, knees ankles and back and did a lot of damage. The question is which trainer company deals with supanation?? Or go to the Camino and running trainer specialist...mind you he never advised me on pronation and supanation when i bought my Hokas for the Camino...worst trainers ever for supanation. I should have been advised re.this matter really by Hoka guy and got the right Hokas for my supanation.
    Thank you for your video on this subject. And anyone thinking of doing the Camino make sure you remember this pronation/supanation/neutral.
    Buen Camino🌷🌷

    you mentioned what supination is and that the shoes people tend to buy are very rigid (only bend at the toe box). but so is this ideal or not? are rigid shoes ideal for supination, or do you mean that the tendency of supination folks to buy very rigid shoes is not ideal? sorry that its not very clear to me if you meant this tendency (to buy very rigid shoes) supports more supination or helps to control it from getting worst. thank you for the explanation.

      Thank you for the question. Ideally for someone who supinates they want to buy a shoe with more cushion. This will balance out rigidity of their foot. But you want to make sure the shoe still only flexes at the toe box. The added cushion will help absorb the impact that a ridge (supinated) foot is unable to naturally absorb. Please let me know if you have any other questions😊

    I switched to barefoot and will never go back to regular restricted shoes. Wearing the Hykes Flex and love them.

    I have a mild form of cerebral palsy and my right foot rolls outward terribly. In addition, my left foot is a size 9.2 wide and my right foot is a size 7.4 average. I just went to the doctor and have plantar fasciitis in my left foot. The tread on my right foot wears out very quickly. The doctor said the Brooks Ghost is a good shoe for supination but really not finding that on the list according to "doctor google". The best shoe I have found (but only purchased a few) is the Altria Timp 4 Wide. I really don't care what the shoe costs because finding a good shoe is so important to me. Any suggestions???

      Thank you for sharing your story. You defiantly have a struggle with shoes, from style, support and sizing. Did you MD talk to you about physical therapy for your left foot? There are several thing that you can do to stop plantar fascial pain other then just proper shoes. Now to answer your shoe question. If you go to the Brooks website and type in supination they will give you all their shoes that help supination aka "under pronation". And I double checked Brooks Ghost are on their list. That same search will work on all the websites of sports shoes. I would say there is almost no way to know which shoe will work best for you until you try them on. Without seeing you I don't really know how to direct you so I will share a few websites that you can check out to see if any sound good to you. www.orthofeet.com/ or www.drcomfort.com/ As for the wearing out the soles of your right foot. That will directly related to the way you walk. This is also something that could be improved with physical therapy. Muscle get weak and gaits change over time whether you have CP or not, so it might be worth having someone assess you gait to give more options and solutions. I wish I could give you a more concrete answer.

    Do shoe inserts work? I need a pair of shoes for everyday use. I walk like I am intoxicated I can't keep a steady gait. :) I would like a pair of everyday shoes that look good to me but I want to make sure it helps with my supination.

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald  5 місяців тому

      yes, inserts do work. The unfortunate truth is that picking a pair that is perfect for you for all shoes is not easy. Often the inserts can be great in a sneaker but then in a dress shoe they aren't great. It might be easier to simply find a shoe you if you are looking for something other then sneaker. Supination controlling inserts are going to add more cushion while giving good arch support. With that in mind when you go shopping next 1. make sure the shoe bends only at the ball of your foot (the toe box), that there is a good amount of cushion, at a minimal, where your heel is. and that you can feel the arch support. there are specialty stores like: ocwshoes.com, that sell shoes by foot condition, but you might be able to find a nice, well cushioned shoe to help you at a local store. I would also like to say that if you are having a hard time controlling your gait, a physical therapist could help you feel more steady when you walk.

    You mentioned that there are some suppliers. Do you know any specific brand or shoe model that are made for supinated foot?

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald  5 місяців тому

      For me there is a lot that goes into the comfort of a shoe. For instance the front of my foot is wider then my heel some shoes brands just uncomfortable. If you know a brand you like simply google “ x shoe for supination” it will give you the model names. I started running a while ago so I personally like ASICS. I’ve used Brooks over the years. A newer brand,to me at least, is Hoka and they also have a shoe designed to control supination. I would go some where that would have several running shoe brands equipped with a list of brands and models names so you could try a bunch on and find what’s most comfortable for you.

    Should I be looking for running shoes that are softer, firmer or something in between? Can overly soft shoe be bad for supinator?

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald  6 місяців тому

      If you supinate your are looking for medium to soft. I know that is vague but it depends on how significant your supination is. You definitely don't want a firm shoe. And make sure the shoe isn't so soft that it folds in half. The shoe should naturally bend at your toe box (at the ball of your foot).

      @@drmollymcdonald how about heel to toe drop?

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald  6 місяців тому

      that really depends on comfort and what you want from your shoe. If your calves are tight then you might do better with with a slightly elevated heel. But if you want to stay in anatomical position then try a 0 drop

      @@Andy-fr6un I apologize, I just saw this last question. I know that some benefit from different angles of foot position. If you are not trying to correct a specific issue, then it would be about comfort.
