2 Lower Back Exercises to Strengthen Your Core for Running
These exercises are some of my top picks for easing lower back pain, especially if you need to strengthen your core muscles. These exercises are low-intensity, specifically targeting your abs while minimizing the use of other muscles. High-intensity exercises like leg lifts, planks, and deadbugs can sometimes make back pain worse by involving the hip flexors and lumbar extensors too much.
At Your Goals Physical Therapy we help active adults end their aches and pains so that they can reclaim their favorite recreational activities and live life to the fullest -- without medications, injections or surgery.

    Do shoe inserts work? I need a pair of shoes for everyday use. I walk like I am intoxicated I can't keep a steady gait. :) I would like a pair of everyday shoes that look good to me but I want to make sure it helps with my supination.

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 3 дні тому

      yes, inserts do work. The unfortunate truth is that picking a pair that is perfect for you for all shoes is not easy. Often the inserts can be great in a sneaker but then in a dress shoe they aren't great. It might be easier to simply find a shoe you if you are looking for something other then sneaker. Supination controlling inserts are going to add more cushion while giving good arch support. With that in mind when you go shopping next 1. make sure the shoe bends only at the ball of your foot (the toe box), that there is a good amount of cushion, at a minimal, where your heel is. and that you can feel the arch support. there are specialty stores like: ocwshoes.com, that sell shoes by foot condition, but you might be able to find a nice, well cushioned shoe to help you at a local store. I would also like to say that if you are having a hard time controlling your gait, a physical therapist could help you feel more steady when you walk.

    You mentioned that there are some suppliers. Do you know any specific brand or shoe model that are made for supinated foot?

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 14 днів тому

      For me there is a lot that goes into the comfort of a shoe. For instance the front of my foot is wider then my heel some shoes brands just uncomfortable. If you know a brand you like simply google “ x shoe for supination” it will give you the model names. I started running a while ago so I personally like ASICS. I’ve used Brooks over the years. A newer brand,to me at least, is Hoka and they also have a shoe designed to control supination. I would go some where that would have several running shoe brands equipped with a list of brands and models names so you could try a bunch on and find what’s most comfortable for you.

    Should I be looking for running shoes that are softer, firmer or something in between? Can overly soft shoe be bad for supinator?

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald Місяць тому

      If you supinate your are looking for medium to soft. I know that is vague but it depends on how significant your supination is. You definitely don't want a firm shoe. And make sure the shoe isn't so soft that it folds in half. The shoe should naturally bend at your toe box (at the ball of your foot).

    • @drmollymcdonald

      that really depends on comfort and what you want from your shoe. If your calves are tight then you might do better with with a slightly elevated heel. But if you want to stay in anatomical position then try a 0 drop

However every few years I reinjure it (I play tennis and do weights like bench press and pullups). Something else is I tried hitting a golf ball about 4 years ago and right on contact it felt like someone shot me there. Right now it's bothering me again a bit. That is a completely valid comment and it points out I need to work on this video. Sadly, depending on your definition of "fixing". That could mean surgery. If you want the physical structure the tendon to not have a tear, then a surgeon is the only person who can do that. However, if by "fixing" you want the full use of your shoulder back, there are exercises, stretches, postural changes that can get you back to having no pain and stop you from continuing to hurt your rotator cuff. Now that I'm writing this you might have a different definition of "fixing" that I hadn't considered. The reason giving specific exercises is hard for me, is that what works for some doesn't work for others. There are so many variables, from the severity of the injury to the rotator cuff to the persons health and prior fitness level. You already know I think you should look for a professional to help you. But if you want see what you can do at home then I would look up rotator cuff exercises and/or posture exercises.

    Ive pulled my back 3 times in my lifetime and ended up off work for around 2 weeks each time ( lifting related) but i I now dread sneezing and coughing as it feels like my back is on the verge of going every time.

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 5 місяців тому

      @harrylebastard It is very common to have the sensation in your back when you cough or sneeze, that doesn't make it "normal". I'm a strong believer that if your body is telling you something you should listen. The nice thing is you don't have to live with that sensation. You can strength and stabilize your spine to stop that feeling.

      Hi @jusme9400 it is less common for someone to have to sleep with a boot but it is not unheard of. Your surgeon really don't want to you to move your ankle/ foot to make sure the hardware has time to connect to the bone. I can only image how uncomfortable that must be...hopefully you don't have that much longer in the boot

    Hi, thanks for your video. In your experience how long more or les it takes to go back to running or hiking for someone doing exercise periodically?. I got bunionectomy in both feet plus correction of hammer toes in two toes per feet. I don't run, but I used to do long hikes (25 to 30km with at least 1000m up and down per day). Im so looking forward to be back, but feel really weak after 5 weeks post-op.

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 5 місяців тому

      Hi thank you so much for the message. I'm very impressed by the Km you hike! I live in a city that is flat so I'm always jealous of people who can hike and enjoy nature. It would be very hard to answer your question because there are to many variables. I would say the range would be 3 months to 1 year depending on someone goals and other health variables. Here is why.... Traditionally bunion and hammer toes are developed over time from the way people walk. Speaking generally bunions develop over time when there is pressure place on the side (verses the bottom) of the first toe during push off. Hammer toes develop from the foot trying to grab the ground, meaning part of the foot is not in contact with the ground. This can happen when people walk more on the outside of their foot. It sounds like you had surgery to "fix" the structural changes which is great. Just due to having surgery you will have lots of pain and swelling which limit the amount of strength that can be gained until about 6-8 weeks post- surgery, which is when the tendons and bone have healed. This means that is you just wanted to have less pain walking, fit in shoes then in about 6-8 weeks you will feel pretty good with your daily activities. However, my clients tell me they want to not just have less pain walking they want to fully enjoy their recreational activities. I work with my clients to change how they walk by finding their muscle imbalances in their hip and ankles. And we actively work on changing how they naturally walk to pattern to one that is less taxing on their feet. Some clients make gains very quickly and some take a little more time. There can be a number of reasons for the differences. I hope this helps you to at least know you are not behind in your recovery Your body is still healing from the surgery.

    other areas of my ankle hurt after wearing it for 8hours of working..top of foot mainly..any advice? i walk around alot at my job

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 5 місяців тому

      Hi @jer2035 3 things come to mind right off the bat. First, does your boot fit properly? If the boot is too big for your foot, your foot will move to much inside the boot causing irritation. If the boot is to small then it can squeeze the foot causing discomfort especially to wider and/ or boney parts of your foot. Second does your foot swell a lot at work? If you have any amount of swelling at the end the day it can cause extra pressure, which won't feel good. Sorta like squeezing into a small shoe. Third are you allowed to take your foot out of the boot and move it around at night? You might be dealing with muscle stuffiness or fatigue at the end of a long day. If you have exercise that you are allowed to do then on your break you could take the boot off and try a few to see if they loosen up your foot/ankle. If you suspect the pain is coming from swelling you could bring ice to work then on your breaks put you foot up and ice it for 10 minutes. If icing at work is just not possible you could try to find some place simply to elevate you leg as high as possible to allow gravity to help you get the swelling out of your foot again for 10 minutes ideally but anytime is better then no time. If you are worried it might be how the boot fits, and or you have not been cleared to do any stretches then call a local physical therapist to find the root causing the of the pain. They will be able to order a new boot or give you type to make it through your work day. I hope this answers your question, let me know if you need anything else

      @drmollymcdonald 6 місяців тому

      Hi, toddyh7490. You are already doing one of the best things for your spine by working out. I can only image how frustrating it must be to workout but still have pain. There are a lot of things to consider when deciding what will help your spinal alignment and stopping your pain. I have worked with many people with scoliosis and none of them have had the same curve, strength or flexibility. The fastest way to find the best things that will help you will be to find a physical therapist in your area. Physical therapist have the training and knowledge to help find the best stretches for you.

    My right shoulder got sore after the first few training sessions when I started boxing. My reasoning was like this: "My punch is like a projectile and it wants to fly away. What keeps it in its place are my shoulder and elbow joints. Since I try to throw right crosses too hard while shadowboxing, my tendons around the shoulder get stretched, trying to keep the joint in place." Do I have a point or am I just too ignorant? : )

    • @drmollymcdonald
      @drmollymcdonald 7 місяців тому

      I like your thinking. It is very true that you are trying to generate enough force with your trunk and shoulder to launch your hand some where (the air, a bag or some ones face😉 ). And just like how your hips, knees and ankles ligaments/ muscles need to get stronger to jump properly (good initial explosion, properly extension, and effective force absorption with landing) Your shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand ligaments/ muscles have to get stronger to tolerate the amount of force you can generate, in addition, to the forces of impact. As long as you allow yourself recovery time, and the pain eventually stops with the same intensity of work you have nothing to worry about. Also depending on your training program, it is shocking how heavy your arms are after just 3 minutes of swinging at the air. We don't tend to hold our arms up for 3 minutes at a time let along for 3- 4 rounds. hope this helps. feel free to ask more questions
