Grow your own Probiotics using Raw Organic Honey. Is this possible?

  • I have a video where I grew probiotics (fruit ferment) in a glass jar.
    You can view it here:
    • Growing your own Probi...
    But that recipe had organic sugar in it. I decided to experiment and see if I can replace sugar with raw organic honey. Knowing that honey has anti-bacterial effect, will it kill the probiotic bacteria?
    This method is by fermenting fruits in a glass jar. The glass jar is closed up and occasionally loosened to release the gas produced by the fermentation process. You got to, otherwise the lid will pop open and its going to get messy!
    Here are the ingredients:
    Below are the simple ingredients and items I use:
    500ml glass jar. (use a BPA-free plastic lid)
    fruits of any kind that you like
    Apple cider vinegar (about 3 spoonful)
    Raw organic honey (about 4 spoonful)
    and Water filled up till 4/5 of the glass bottle)
    1 capsule of probiotic
    Put it aside for about 3 days. It should look bubbly and frothy at the top layer.
    Keep the jar closed at all times when not pouring the contents out or when topping up with fresh ingredients.
    You can keep the jar after 3 days inside your fridge.

    Adding the vinegar helps to lower the pH quickly and helps the good bacteria outcompete the bad bacteria at the very beginning of the fermentation process.

    May I suggest that you use a weight to ensure that the banana and other fruits does not come above the water level and get oxidised.

    Don't discard the fruit. The fiber will provide something for the probiotics to eat in your gut and make their home there. I also would steer clear of garlic as it can harm even beneficial bacteria. Above room temperature will allow most yield.

    I mix ACV:Honey 50:50 and store garlic in it. The results are delicious. The garlic cloves lose their sharp bite and mellow considerably. The honey and vinegar become infused with garlic and is amazing on salads or as a cough syrup.

    If the probiotics are without a gastroresistant capsule, will they reach the gut anyways, so that it can be optimally absorbed by this last one?=

    Hey, thank you for sharing. I was looking for videos about fermenting fruits, that was helpful.
    But have a question please, why we have to add honey if the fruits themselves are sweet so the bacteria can live on the fruits' sugar. 🤔
    And why we have to add probiotics if the apple cider vinegar has already probiotic.
    Thank you

    • @afzainizamzahari
      @afzainizamzahari  4 роки тому +4

      Hi! Great questions. From my observations, of I don't add honey, the reaction will be somewhat slower because the bacteria is constantly looking for sugars and as they multiply they require more sugars than what the fruits contain. As to why I add probiotics is because I want those specific beneficial bacteria already packaged in the bottles so that I don't need to buy them anymore

      serendipidus1 I agree, kinda dangerous to do an aerobic ferment like this esp using so much sugar. But there is merit here, perhaps it shd just be done anaerobically.

      Use pineapple skin, it has yeast and will create good bacteria. In Mexico they make a probiotic drink called tepache, the pineapple peel is what helps it ferment.

    Is eating 2 spoonful of honey daily in anyway harmful for our gut health ?

    • @afzainizamzahari
      @afzainizamzahari  5 років тому +2

      personally I don't eat honey because of the high sugar in it and also because of the high glycemic index. But if I require it to heal certain things in my body or to soothe my throat, I will consume it but not too much. Everyone is different so take note how your body reacts to or deal with eating honey on a daily basis.

I have wide mouth glass jars with plastic screw tops or narrow neck glass bottles with rubber sealed swing top (to seal and create pressure). @@afzainizamzahari raw fruit has naturally occurring yeast in it so it's yeast fermentation mostly. Not bacterial which is what Probiotic is.
      If you put fruit in water it'll get fizzy in a few days. There's some Probiotic there but it's basically yeast starting to make alcohol, if you leave it longer it'll start testing a lot more like alcohol, but in the beginning not as much, it's just becoming soda first.
