Check the front knuckles at the top ball joint for cracks......Might have had recall done if was one years recalled, check MOT site if car was done , but a german YT channel found the same fault on a later car ....
Buy as large a Neodymium magnet as you can afford and attach it to the underside of the exhaust back box. Move the magnet around until the rattling stops. If you are unlucky, you may need more than one. I would only do this after you have (1) vacuumed out the rear box and if that fails (2) try a magnet tied to a cord down the tailpipe and see what you can fish out. Another approach, if easy, is to remove back box and give it a shake.......
Love the chemistry building with you 3! As for the rattle I do have an endoscope 😂 but to be honest one of those custom exhaust shops would be the most cost effective way. They would probably cut from the top and dive in to pick out the rattle or replace some baffles or weld back any that’s moved and then weld it all back up. Invisible fix until the whole unit gets removed at a later date. Pads should be reasonably cheap and cheerful, especially for rear ones so hopefully the damage won’t be too bad!
All that wiring will be triple sealed waterproof AF. It makes sense to me to leave it exposed. Putting it inside something is just another thing that can catch water in it and cause problems. I'm not expert enough to know if that's a sensible opinion to have though.
Get the front suspension uprights checked, they regularly crack where the ball joints pinch bolts are and can totally collapse the suspension… needs fully cleaning off then using NDT Dye Penetrant kit, cleaner dye and white contrast spray… easy to do but with out this you can easily miss the cracks
Take backbox off, cut it open with an angle grinder, fish out the loose bit of tack out back together with welder then weld it shut. Garage should be able to do that under £100 easy, 20 min job. I did the same with my centre box on my track car when it had a rattle. Don't buy a new one
As already said , take the back box off and cut it open take out the offending piece and weld it up . Defo wire brush the under neath and give it a coating of something to prevent rust. These cars are not as bad as people make out. They buy a car which was £90k new for pennies and then won't spend the money on maintenance !!
Go to a custom exhaust place, they can cut the back box off, fish out what’s in there, and then weld it back on. Magnets just stick to the sides of the pipes and don’t help.
Well done Ben, good video and it looks like you got a good RR that will look after you if you keep on top of the little things mentioned and regular maintenance... TBH - I'd change the oil every 6,500 miles and ask Ash to check the upper steering knuckle joints closely before your trip as they're prone to cracking with age.
I have a tool thats a magnet on a length of flexible rod. I would try that first and see if its possible to fish it out. If that didn't work I would probably remove the exhaust and see if it can be shaken out. Depending on the cost of a new backbox at that point either replace it, or cut it open (ontop, the part you don't see when fitted) and try and see if whatever it is can be removed. I think it could be the structure of the exhasut failing, in which case only a replacement will solve it.
It would be worth getting the Garage to inspect for cracks in the front suspension upper knuckle joints. There was a recall on certain 2014 to 2016 models so they should be ok. I have a 2017 model but I will get them to inspect the suspension upper knuckles joints all the same next week when it goes in for its annual service.
Tailgate drops as the bolts come loose, now you are RR trained check out ones for sale and your ocd will kick in once you notice all the dropped tailgates
