I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2007. I was an 0341 and I joined with my best friend in the buddy program. We went to Parris Island, SOI, Iraq and Afghanistan together. We had a five year contract and got out in 2012. Definitely the best decision of my life. In our case, I was the guy who called my best friend and said he had to join with me haha. MarineCounty MCRD San Diego 1980, was just remembering how the words “but my recruiter told me” would always bring a laugh ;). Best to you and Semper Fi
Semper Fi, brother. In bootcamp, I was a weakling. It took me a year after bootcamp to become a stud. I was a regular 300-PFTer after that. People have no idea what kind of heart they have. USMC bootcamp will give you a very good idea. If you were company honor grad, then only fellow Marines know what that took. Respect. You're dead-on about training to be a sub-18 minute 3-miler. You gotta go fast all the time for as long as you can. When I went for runs, I freakin' ran. If I wasn't feeling particularly strong that day, then I cut it short, but I never went slow. I also did the sprint the straights and walk the curves thing on a track sometimes. You gotta get to where you're relaxed while hauling ass.

it gets to the point of running so much you can carry a conversation for 5- 10 miles. and thats not jogging ether we are talking 6-7 min mile run speeds
he's talking about how you get comfortable enough with running that you can carry a conversation while running a 6-7 mile time... except alan doesn't talk about running 5-10 miles (or long distances), he only talks about running up to 3 miles lol
I met this guy at the gym who was on a football team in my HS, 1 year younger than me, and was in the army. I told him I was planning on joining Marines, and now I lift with him a lot. He's really strong, deadlifts 545 lbs max after a little less than a year out of the army. He runs every time he lifts, for 1 mile, 5-6 minutes, keeps his size and strength, and I run with him. cardio is good for your heart and muscles. woudnt mind Thrall spreading the wisdom of it.
Recently ran into this channel and have been enjoying content. I was in The Army version of what he did, The Old Guard. I was even in caskets platoon. This is the most SOUND advice for pre-basic I've seen on UA-cam.
So I'm guessing someone forgot their general orders while on firewatch one night and paid a heavy price for it. Yes? 1. To take charge of this post and all government property in view. 2. To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. 3. To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce. 4. To repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse than my own. 5. To quit my post only when properly relieved. 6. To receive, obey, and pass on the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the commanding officer, officer of the day, and officers and noncommissioned officers of the guard only. 7. To talk to no one except in line of duty. 8. To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder. 9. To call the corporal of the guard in any case not covered by instructions. 10. To salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased. 11. To be especially watchful at night and, during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority.
Just saw this today. Belated Happy Birthday Marine! Began watching your channel and working out (5X5) last month. It is really hard to face the fact that my Marine service ended more than 50 years ago but I feel much better now that I am exercising again. Thank you for your service AND for the inspiration/motivation you channel provides.
Hey Brother, I stumbled onto your channel a month ago. I really enjoy it. I had no idea you were a former Marine. This video was great and very funny as most are. I also appreciate your service at Marine Barracks. I have a couple "brothers" who made their final trip home. "Last to let you down" hold's a special place for their families. Thank you and the men you served with for that. Semper Fi. ...Do Work
Great video dude! Especially the first part, holy shit you were in my head when I was 18. My best friend had already left for the Marines, I was a directionless, defiant, lost mama's boy. Couldn't find a job I liked, or keep a job for very long. My buddy came home from his A.I.T. and I was floored by; how he acted, how he got treated (he was even more of a fuck up than I was before he left), and how much pussy came out of the woodwork for him. The night he was leaving, my fuckin battery in my truck exploded, had a shitty night at work (3rd shift shit job), almost got into a fist fight at work, bla bla.... Got out of work at 7am, got my dunkins coffee, and was waiting parked in front of the recruiter's office when they opened. The rest is history. Our government may have it's issues and challenges, but our military fucking rocks! Uncle Sam straightened me right the fuck out (with a quickness), best move I ever made. 8 years active Army Engineer. retired Sgt, 62E20, promotable. Got out before I got my E-6. Great tale brother! Semper Fi.
I cannot thank you for the running template! I have the mindset of increasing mileage to get quicker but know that I need to get better at sprint work to be a better runner. I will be implementing this routine regularly. Thank you so much Alan.
It seems like you're missing the Marine Corps Alan. Allow me to be the voice to remind you that you made the right choice joining but you've also made the right choice leaving. You are very successful brother and set the standard for people getting out like myself should strive for. (not to mention my deadlift shot up 50lbs taking note of your videos) Semper Fi man.
Alan, thank you. This is the EXACT information I was looking for. Weightlifting combined with running training. I will be starting this afternoon to implement your training routine.
Didn’t know you served brother. Loved you before, respect you even more now. Old Army Infantry Platoon Sergeant here. Growing my dreds out myself. It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve been out. Anyhow, you kick ass man. Keep doing what you do brother.
I just finished up with the Canadian Forces and made a vid a few weeks ago saying that I wasn't going to shave or cut my hair for a year, funny that I came across this vid. Right on man, can relate to your story a bit too.
Hey, I wanted to thank you for this video. After being laid off from a good job and having one now that I am not very happy in, I have decided to finally get into shape and do something I've been considering for a long time, join the military ( decided on Navy). I have lost almost 50 lbs through powerlifting and CrossFit and I love both, but now I am at a point where I need to start running, and this video has some great starting points for me. Thank you for this video and others on your channel.
Damn this man knows how to train for a 1.5 mile run. I ran track in college and used to have chiefs tell us to run 3 miles two times a week in prep for a 1.5 and when I told them it just trained you to run a slower pace and made it harder to pick up that pace when you needed to they would just not listen. It is good to run two to three longer tuns of no more than 5 miles 3-4 times a month.
Thank you so much man. I leave July 17 for San Diego and have been having problems getting my run time under 20 mins because I would run 7 miles because that's what the recruiter told me. I will do this until I leave and will reply with my new results.18 pulls 109 crunches and 20:21 3 mile 4/6/17
Update on my run now. My 3 mile time is now 19:49 and it's only been two weeks. Getting closer to 18mins. Thank you so much on the work out. I'll keep you updated till I leave
Just finished Basic Training at RTC. This helped me out preparing for it. If I can add one thing, if you’re joining Navy, train your hip flexors and core. Learn to hold your planks and learn hip abductor endurance. That’s my biggest piece of advice.
In one of his vids. he showed a pic of him @17 y/o (4 years of training already). He had huuuge legs. He said he squat, front squat, power cleaned and sprinted.
I was in the buddy program, too. We were high school friends, and it was all we talked about during our senior year. We even hung out at the recruiter's office when we got bored. When the time came, we were in the recruiter's car towards the airport; then unbelievably, my buddy chickened-out! My recruiter was fit to be tied that day.
This guy is talking about intervals, the best way to better your endurance. It's better to slowly jog than to walk, but it's even better to have a bit a of a fast pace while jogging, and then you start to Sprint. These are called fartleks. Another workout would be Indian runs, where a group of men in one single column would run around a track at their 10k pace (10 kilometers), about 6-7 min per mile. The last guy in the line would sprint to the front, and on and on and on. Sprint, jog, repeat.
Super interesting video, Alan. Even though I have no interest in joining the military. I've been looking for running programs to start when the weather warms up a bit and I'll definitely do that 15 min 100m sprint/100m walk HIIT.
just want to say thanks for this running program! I've applied for the Royal Australian Navy and have to pass a beep test in December, this running program is the best, most logical programs I've ever heard of. Will definitely start on it from now on! Thank you! Also your beard and hair are glorious!

Just stumbled upon this video and it couldn't be more perfect. I'm in the delayed entry program for the marine core and needed to see something like this. I haven't been this motivated in a long time. You really put it together for me there. I appreciate the information. Thank you for putting this video together.
thanks for your service, from one veteran to another. as a guy who is still active duty air force, I would love to see a video about how to incorporate running the 1.5 and strength training without too much sacrifice on strength gains or running time
I too entered the Military under the body program. My buddy was that little voice in my head that constantly nagged me about being a lazy booze hound, and that I should do something that would challenge me and make me proud of myself. My family on my dad's side were all Navy, except an uncle that was like you...a Marine (he was in Vietnam, my dad was in Korea, the youngest of the 3 brothers was also serving during Vietnam and my grandfather was actually at Pearl Harbour when the Japanese launched their attack). I decided that....I was going to be in the Infantry....and enlisted (as did my grandfather, dad and uncles before they could be drafted and not have a say in where they would serve), did all my testing, physicals (although there were weight requirements, there was no 3 pull ups involved) and such....kissed my wife goodbye, boarded the jet (first time on 1 at the time) and headed for Ft Jackson South Carolina for Reception, as you now know, into the US Army Infantry School....which by the way involved a long assed coach ride from Columbia South Carolina to Columbus Georgia.....Ft. Benning! I was the ripe old age of 22 (I was the oldest damn Recruit of our Cycle.....most of the others were still teenagers! Those bastards called me grandpa!. Joke was on them as most of them ended up recycling because they couldn't shoot straight, or were not able to do all the PT requirements...or they were just flat out sent home, never to return). That was also in 1983, before Basic Training/AIT in the Army turned into a health spa. The Marine Corps has never lost their identity. I made 1 huge mistake, which I tried to rectify upon graduation and returning home. I joined The Oklahoma National Guard. I realised that I really loved the Military and I wanted to go into the regular Army. I was told I couldn't due to the OARNG forking out all that money for my training at Ft Benning. I had to serve at least 4 years in the Guard. I was in a great Unit though....we were Mechanised Infantry Scouts (Combat Support)....just like on the TV show The Rat Patrol. I was a Jeep Gunner (no Humvees yet), until I became an E4 and I became a Jeep Driver....both were very exciting! By the time I did 4 years we had 2 beautiful daughters and I decided to stick to being a part time soldier BUT, I did leave the National Guard and joined a Training Battalion in the 95th Army Reserves. I went from State Militia to Army Reservist. My new job was....a Drill Sgt!! Our entire Company was Drill Sgts (well we had to be Drill Sgts in training first lol). I so wanted to get my Stetson Campaign Hat (Brown Round)! I was already slotted in an E5 slot and I was inches from my hat (even to the point my head was measured and hat was on order) however.....life came back and bit me in the ass!!! I had a bad injury on my stupid civilian job, that took away my dream. I had to be discharged. I was actually Honorably Discharged by the National Guard and the US Army Reserves lol. Man I must really be bored to write all that lol...I apologise.
USMC 1986-1990. Just happened across this video. Best advice I think I've ever seen. And in case anyone may have missed the emphasis, KNOW YOUR GENERAL ORDERS😂
This so resonates for me. My "birthday" is 29 June 1964. Big props for serving with the body bearers unit. I don't think I heard where but it looked like you have MCRD San Diego in your pictures/videos? The run training, if I remember correctly, was called "fahrtlicht" training and was all the rage back in the mid-1960's. Your comment of training to run long and slow means you get real good at running long and slow is so spot on. Good stuff. Keep it up. And welcome home. Semper fi
This video was an amazing find! I was naturally fast in my youth and ran 5:30 miles. At 54, my goal was always to be able to pass the USLA ocean lifeguard fitness test. I've kept up the ability to swim 500m in less than 10 minutes, and I can do every fitness test for USCG and USN rescue swimmers -- except for the 1.5-mile run in less than 12 minutes. I was doing long runs and short sprints of no more than 200 yards. I was never on a track team and had no knowledge of how to run faster beyond a 200-yard beach sprint. Thank you! Subscribed.
Dude?! why am i just now finding you, this video is a huge inspiration! 3 weeks to EAS and im off to go build my gym in Chattanooga! seriously glad i saw this, its very hard staying motivated with no one around you that believes in you!
Alan, can you critique my alpha male, not bald, full body chair routine? Chair rows Chair dips Chair holds Level pulls Chair press Deadchair ATC squats I do 1 set of 3 reps, once a month for each lift. I rest 10:02 between sets and chronically overeat calories to put on more muscle than any natural on Earth. That's just a simple reality.
Connor I use more weight because my high fiber diet makes me gain body weight easily. I also give dick twice a day, which is considered muscle confusion. My muscles can't tell whether my female girlfriend is actually a female, thus they are confused.
I had a sneaking suspicion that you were in the Marine Corps. I was an 0311 myself from 2003-2007, except I spent my entire 4 years in the victory unit with 3 deployments in 3 years. It always makes me happy seeing a fellow motivator, motivating all the people around him!
Semper Fi! From one Marine Vet to another. I'm definitely subscribing. I was stationed at 8th & I from 2003 to 2007 as part of Marine Corps Institute Company. I was trained by the Body Bearers and made that trip to Dover, DE, very often. Counted over 800 transfers during my 3 years. #KeepGoing #USMC 💪💪
Many years back I wanted to run a 5K in under 20 minutes. For a non-track guy I thought that was a reasonable goal. So, I did the kind of interval training similar to what you suggested in your video. I ran the race so hard I thought I would die but the good news---19 minutes 38 seconds! Thank you for your service sir and the excellent advice you give us!
I'm joining the British Royal Marines in 3 months and I really appreciate this workout plan and your info. The Commando's and the Corps share some pretty similar fitness ethos and while the entrance requirements are a little higher over here I have no doubt that the general fitness level you aspired to in training will be more than enough for me to work towards and pass my PRMC. Thanks dude, you're an awesome coach and a Fantastic Fucking Beard Man as well!
I mean, you look at that clip of the three officers screaming at that one recruit and you have to imagine his friend made the right call. If you want to be psychologically stripped down so that the military can make you a "good soldier", then all the power to you. I'm not into kink shaming, so have at it, you weirdos.
Semper fidelis brother. I had no idea you served until I saw this. It sheds a whole new light for me on your videos. I've been in 12 years now and I still fight every gene in my body to maintain weight and fitness standards, made all that much harder by having to set an example for my troops. I recently had to take a promotion photo, and let's just say I had a moment of "self awareness", and decided I can't live like this any more. So I've started a journey to change my life, and in just a couple months, changes are happening and I feel like my life is so much better. Sorry for being so long winded, but I just wanted to make a point, that some of your videos have been a part of this, and now it means so much more. I'll be looking forward to more videos. Oorah! Yut! Kill!
I don't think you'll respond to a message left to a video that's over two years old... but I'll try anyway! You said that doing short heavy weight sets will increase the reps you can do with a much lighter weight. I understand the very basic concept of this, but doesn't short heavy reps smash more of the nervous system rather than the muscle? I have been under the impression that 1-3 reps helps you to develop more of the explosive strength, 7-12 reps helps you to build muscle mass, and 15-30 reps helps you to develop strength that is required for an extended amount of time. I'm asking this because I'm applying to a fire fighter school, where you are required to bench press 38 times in a minute with 45kg, and squat 34 times in a minute with 45kg. I'm trying to find the most efficient way to train for this. Recently I've been doing a lot of training within the 15-20 reps, and doing a lot of sets, just to get a lot repetitions with the given weight. What do you think would be optimal? An answer would be great since this is very important to me.

Love the channel man, keep up the good work. Semper Fi.

5 year contract?
I thought it is 8 year.
4 active
4 reserve
@@zachtrapper2398 depends on your MOS. My contract was 5 active and 3 irr. Pretty standard for Wing Marines.
Can you imagine if your buddy didn't come home? Living with that shit?
Military people use their brains as decoration exclusively.

Great video! I'm a Marine Corps recruiter and I'm showing this to all of my Poolees starting today
Video couldn't have came at a better time, thanks!!
Zechariah Smith Totally agree! When are you joining? I'm joining in about a year, gonna use almost this exact program but slightly modified
bob fuqyumarley wtf are you even talking about? Both of us are white lol. Get outta here with that racist bs
Oscar Stenberg I'm joining after my senior year of high school, I'm almost done with my junior year now. I'm good at everything except the long distance running lol
Zechariah Smith you're lucky then! Running is what people tend to adapt to the fastest. Good luck to you
Oscar Stenberg Thanks dude, you as well!
Im not joining any military Soon, But God damn I will use the sprinting Workouts for sure.
Thx

God bless anyone who's ever done the military I've coached high school wrestling and football for 9 years and a lot of the kids I've coached have gone into the military Navy Marines Army and one of the last kids was a Navy SEAL he said the training I put him through the wrestling is what got him through to be a Navy SEAL I was very honored about that and I told him thank you for letting me train you I feel honored for coaching honorable kids our job in life is always to give back not to always take thank you for your videos you are very motivated keep up the great work I'm a big fan thank you
Eating quickly is so underrated in military training
I am the slowest eater ever... am I fucked
Recall the episode of Band of Brother where Sobel makes the company eat spaghetti and then do the Toccoa run. Sadistic but effective
Semper Fi Alan. Being a Body Bearer is top notch shit man. From an old 1812 tanker from 29 Palms, I want to thank you for being a part of a tough billet, and doing that service for our fallen brothers. Thanks man

"many of you have supported untamed strength since i had 50 subscribers"
so, uh, about 50 of us?
jokes aside, cool video man; I'm joining the military soon and this gives me a lot of confidence that its a good decision for me
i dont wanna like this comment cuz guess all 50 of them have liked it :)
Man this was excellent. Had to show it to my brother and dad who are both former military and they loved it.
Thank you for your service! My brother was also a Marine, he started as a radio operator and switched to combat photographer. My husband served too, in the Air Force Special Forces. We are a very pro-military and pro-America family, thanks again Alan!!!🇺🇸
wow alan talking about running on the channel, crazy.
it gets to the point of running so much you can carry a conversation for 5- 10 miles. and thats not jogging ether we are talking 6-7 min mile run speeds
+devin johnson, what?
he's talking about how you get comfortable enough with running that you can carry a conversation while running a 6-7 mile time... except alan doesn't talk about running 5-10 miles (or long distances), he only talks about running up to 3 miles lol
I remember those days. 29 Palms 2012 doing laps around Lake Bandini. Or sprinting up Sugar Cookie
Hey i had to know that in the Navy in the 90s

Just saw this today. Belated Happy Birthday Marine! Began watching your channel and working out (5X5) last month. It is really hard to face the fact that my Marine service ended more than 50 years ago but I feel much better now that I am exercising again.
Thank you for your service AND for the inspiration/motivation you channel provides.
Dude, great video, I think it will help a lot of people! And i was just about to do a video similar to this! Hahaha great minds man...

Brian Alsruhe I'd still like to see your take on it as well

Love the videos, Alan. Retiring from the Corps after 21 years this summer. Semper Fi, brother.
Dude good job in the marines
It seems like you're missing the Marine Corps Alan. Allow me to be the voice to remind you that you made the right choice joining but you've also made the right choice leaving. You are very successful brother and set the standard for people getting out like myself should strive for. (not to mention my deadlift shot up 50lbs taking note of your videos) Semper Fi man.
Burial Detail was one of the highlights of my active military time. Saw the Marine Corps. bury my Uncle and my Pops and I said I am going to do that.
You have the best looking cover out of any recruit picture I've ever seen 😆
Thank you so much man. I leave July 17 for San Diego and have been having problems getting my run time under 20 mins because I would run 7 miles because that's what the recruiter told me. I will do this until I leave and will reply with my new results.18 pulls 109 crunches and 20:21 3 mile 4/6/17
Update on my run now. My 3 mile time is now 19:49 and it's only been two weeks. Getting closer to 18mins. Thank you so much on the work out. I'll keep you updated till I leave
How'd it go?
Collin Steele how did it go ????
Collin Steele ayy i shipped july 30!

50 yr old Army veteran here ... great advice for anyone. Love your channel. Great Work. Thanks ...
One more week!!! I've been studying my GENERAL ORDERS.
Just finished Basic Training at RTC. This helped me out preparing for it. If I can add one thing, if you’re joining Navy, train your hip flexors and core. Learn to hold your planks and learn hip abductor endurance. That’s my biggest piece of advice.
Alan, I had no idea how much you knew about running! You should do some more videos about it if you have any more information.
Thank you for your service and all the sacrifices you have made to protect my freedom and my liberties as well as our borders.
I became UNTAMED, because I can...
Love it!!!
From one brother in arms too another congrats on everything you have accomplished and thanks for your service
Super interesting video, Alan. Even though I have no interest in joining the military. I've been looking for running programs to start when the weather warms up a bit and I'll definitely do that 15 min 100m sprint/100m walk HIIT.
I love this video!! I'm a 49 year old USMC vet. Did 6 years 86 - 92. Cracked up at the "know your General Orders!" ROFL Brought back some memories...

Thank you! Subscribed.
I love how you have a good sense of humor even though you in the Marines hahaha. A lot of Marines aren't like that.
Boi, we have the darkest sense of humor!
Young Oorah yes we do its just dark and evil.

Dude?! why am i just now finding you, this video is a huge inspiration! 3 weeks to EAS and im off to go build my gym in Chattanooga! seriously glad i saw this, its very hard staying motivated with no one around you that believes in you!
Alan, can you critique my alpha male, not bald, full body chair routine?
Chair rows
Chair dips
Chair holds
Level pulls
Chair press
Deadchair
ATC squats
I do 1 set of 3 reps, once a month for each lift. I rest 10:02 between sets and chronically overeat calories to put on more muscle than any natural on Earth. That's just a simple reality.
i do chair sits all day
Shaolin Schlag Add Towel Rows for extra volume.
Shaolin Schlag you need to add a rep each month or else you aren't hitting progressive overload.
Connor I use more weight because my high fiber diet makes me gain body weight easily. I also give dick twice a day, which is considered muscle confusion. My muscles can't tell whether my female girlfriend is actually a female, thus they are confused.
Your problems seem eerily familiar somehow..
I had a sneaking suspicion that you were in the Marine Corps. I was an 0311 myself from 2003-2007, except I spent my entire 4 years in the victory unit with 3 deployments in 3 years. It always makes me happy seeing a fellow motivator, motivating all the people around him!
Freaking beast. Semper Fidelis sir!
Semper Fi! From one Marine Vet to another. I'm definitely subscribing. I was stationed at 8th & I from 2003 to 2007 as part of Marine Corps Institute Company. This video is pure gold Sir, I am in the german military and I will use your methods for my training. Thank you very much!
Wow I got this recommend me to me a whole year later I'm set for boot camp on May 12th hopefully this helps me out
How’d it go boot
Many years back I wanted to run a 5K in under 20 minutes. For a non-track guy I thought that was a reasonable goal. So, I did the kind of interval training similar to what you suggested in your video. I ran the race so hard I thought I would die but the good news---19 minutes 38 seconds! Thank you for your service sir and the excellent advice you give us!
Great video tx for sharing.Thank You for your service. Wow, those are some prestigious accomplishments. What ever happened to the guy who dropped out?
Not sure but I bet he doesn't have a sick beard and hair! heh
"Dude I'm out...I'm in love." 😂
