Rich Piana told me to just go out and start a business. Any business it doesn't matter. Just do a business. And he's rich and fucking jacked. So he must be right.
I opened my own gym 8 years ago- the first MMA gym in Shanghai, China. Everything you said here is basically the same as my experience... Except I would add- be really cautious about choosing business partners, because that can complicate things even more.
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Cohen Junior i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Cohen Junior DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED! Just got access to my Instagram login within roughly 30 mins by using the site. Just had to pay 15$ but definitely worth it =) Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
This is so true. I work in the bagged salad industry and I have had multiple opportunities to go higher up in the ranks of management. Easier work, better money, but one big catch, my roster would change. I currently work a 4 day week, four 10+ hour days then 3 days off. Those 3 days off allow me to go hunting and camping, I get to fill my freezers with the ultimate free range protein, my true passion. I also have a passion for weight training, but because I spend my days off work in the bush, I just opt to weight train after work. This gives me the best of both worlds and although I have no passion at all for salad, I appreciate the role I'm in to allow me to pay my way while still being able to consistently hunt and train every single week 👌
"find a job you love and never work another day in your life" as an aulder fella whos been through so many skuttery jobs I've lost count let me tell you I'd much rather take the shit that goes with doing a job/business I love than taking the shit that goes with doing a job that's poisoning my soul a little more with every passing day!
Yep. I'm in my 40s. I'm sucking up debt and time to be back in school for an occupational respec. I ran martial arts schools for a while when I was young. Helped a lot of people get fit and confident and mobile. Assisted in the the training of some people who were real fighters. Never made any money. I realized that what *I* wanted was a 9-5 that paid relatively well and that *really meant something to me.* The other 16 hours a day should be mine for training, for my family, and for my life. So I'm going to work in physical therapy. I found working with injured students the most rewarding. Now, I'll be getting people used to their new knees, getting people back to their training, or back to work. That means something.
Josh Johnston exactly, it doesn't matter how tough it is doing the thing you love if it's the thing you love you enjoy doing it so it isn't tough.....if that makes any sense! 😆
Gym owner here, yes he is right. I've bought my gym place and it works fine but honestly nothing can prepare you for the amount of time you won't have for yourself and your loved ones. You will always need to put your gym first. The best thing I do is to get up in the 5 in the morning and do my workout. And after a long day of working with clients I do my run so I can clear the mind and organize myself for the next day. The thing is that I focus mostly on personal training and I have, thankfully I have great people who I train, but you need to be super organized if you want to succeed and have something of your personal life.
Appreciate the honesty a lot. Everyone is out there saying "follow your dreams" and just driving the positivity train home on these things. It's nice to see Alan is altering perspective, reminding us its not always easy, an important note we shouldn't allow to escape our understanding. Loving the content Alan!
Having my own commercial gym was one of my dreams. So I saved more than 30% of my budget. After I watched this, I thought about it seriously. And I changed my mind. I will have just a home gym for strength traning. Now I understand and know that making cookies for money is not fun as much as I imagined. Thank you for your realistic advices.
receo11 In South Korea, most people deposit more than 40% of their salary into their bank accounts. I do it too and usually make a living with the rest budget.
Where were you three years ago? I had my own gym, and everything you said is true. Always stressing about money, 80 hour weeks, no time to train, hardly saw my kids, members wanting this and that. I was in the Army for 14 years so I can understand your motivation all too well. I sold the gym at a loss because I hated the stress and not having any time for my family. I'm glad I did, but I'm grateful for the lessons I learned. I'm much happier now in my ordinary job, with an ordinary salary, but extraordinary training.
I want to open my own gym because I want as many people as possible to experience the positive impact that lifting has had on me. It empowered every other thing in my life, yet so many people either don't feel like they can go to a lot of gyms or can't stay interested. A new gym and one that isn't a corporate globo would really benefit my community.
As a business owner of many years, this is the absolute and complete truth. I'm in a position where I meet individuals with new business or are considering business startup. Your counsel is truly excellent. Individuals seldom count the cost of running their own business. The rewards can be great but the cost is almost certain. You have many excellent videos but this one ranks up there with the best. Thanks so much for the counsel.
Wisdom dropped here!!! Thrall you are wise beyond your years my friend. Thanks for sharing manhood qualities like perseverance and willingness to fail forward, and commitment... Core masculine values... all of 'em.
thats a pretty good rant Alan. I didn't open a gym because i like to lift, i just bought some weights and made a little basement gym in my parents' house so i wouldn't have to pay for a gym membership when i visit. I eventually wanna move back to my home town and open a gym but for different reasons than "i like lifting," and thus i was relieved my reasons weren't mentioned in this lol
What is your reason? My fantasy is that I would find the cheapest locale I can find, make it hardcore and a cool atmosphere and then just hope people show up from rumors and maybe some facebook advertisements :'DD Because honestly all gyms are lame fitness clubs nowadays. It would be fun to show people that gyms are workshops, not playgrounds.
I pay 80 dollars (YMCA) a month for my gym member ship. For a nice squat rack, plates, and bar it would be around 3,000. Those are going to last for years and years of not abused. So, 3 years of gym membership to pay off equipment. If you are going to open up a gym you are most likely paying a mortgage anyways. Unless you live at home still.
xNAJAFx no way man...my home gym has everything needed (barbell, dumbbells, pullup bar, dip parallels, rings, squat (and bench :D) rack etc...everything costs like year or two going to normal gym...and it has bunch of benefits (calm, friends, for free, lasts like forever...) + if needed, i should just sell it...home gym is way better and cheaper
xNAJAFx yeah, i live with parents...of course when someone is paying a rent and stuff, gym membership is better for him...but when you have good place, lets do your own! and i also like that strongman stuff because if you have some tire or log next to your house, you should workout outside and for free
You can shop around and get most of the basics for cheap. What gets expensive are the extras like dumbbells, and a lat pulldown. If you only make do with a barbell, rack, bench, plates and a pull up bar, you can do your entire workout that way. You can find plates for around $1/lb. If you can tolerate the loudness when you drop the bar because of the slack between the sleeve and hole, then you'll be fine.
actually you can go to Walmart.com, and get the cheap Golds Gym plates for well less than $1/lb. For dumbbells, get Olympic dumbbell handles and a bunch of 5's and 10's.
Alan, im so happy you have opened your own gym, you're brand is very strong and ethical, and you've proven your marketability on youtube.. if you do half of the work you do on youtube, you should have a very successful gym within a couple of years!, I understand your disliking of taking orders and been told what to do, and admire your desire to not be that person anymore, best wishes with your gym, things will only get better, wish you every success!
There are some cases where people didn't have to work nearly as hard to get their business up and running. Could have been something they started out of their basement or garage, or whatever. This is some great advice for people looking to start from nothing, like you did, and work their way up. Good shit man.
I've commented this several times man but your content is fucking primo. I appreciate how real this rant is. So many people out there are just delusional and see guys like you with successful channels on UA-cam and think it's just a matter of uploading videos. They have no concept of work ethic or what it takes to be successful at anything. Everyone just has these pipe dreams of some fantasy life, job, and income, but have put in no thought on how to get there. Thank you for tactfully and respectfully saving these people from misery!
Thanks for this video. Felt like you were speaking to me the whole time. I'm currently in your prior position with a 5 year contract in the military. Excited for this future journey
your videos on the business side of things are so inspirational. they help me better understand and develop my motivation for my own career and some day when I'm ready to open a restaurant I'll be watching them over and over again for motivation and hope. thank you a million times!
Very candid and useful video. Hopefully this helps people contemplate such a big decision. The atmosphere and members of the gym make all the difference. If the owner/coach is stressed or unhappy, the members feed off that. Semper fi
Writing my management project on starting a business and I decided on a similar strength gym like the one you started. I've been absorbing so much knowledge from your older videos, you've given me so much good information on strength training and now business. Will follow your footsteps one day, thank you!
Thanks @AlanThrall this video really resonated with me, as I'm one of "those guys" imminently thinking about going for the plunge of opening a gym, more importantly a strongman gym! my problem is the concern of financial security. I want to open the gym for the right reasons, I love helping people train properly and I want to provide a decent fun gym for weight lifting and strongman as there isn't one here, however I already have a successful business and have been lucky to get here. so I'm weighing up the gamble of selling my business to "attempt" creating a successful gym business.
Excellent video and advice! Starting a guitar school was NOT what I expected. Teaching people how to play is nowhere even CLOSE to the same as being able to play my own music. Huge dose of reality in this journey.
Alan giving some real talk right here! No bull stuff, no curtains, all truth! I love this about Alan and that's why I started training untamed! Thank you, Alan Thrall!
hey Alan. I cannot thank you enough to heartily appreciate another perspective of opening a business. I have noticed that in exchanges with other people, in a flight or fight mindset to make a business happen. The only attraction at the start of a business is those who can assist in making your dream a reality. other than that, these other people have no use for you in a respective sense.
Great video Alan! I love training and love the idea, however what you have stated is totally the case, I love training and not necessarily training others, etc. Keep up the videos. Thanks
That's good advice. I was thinking of trying to open my own gym. I'm glad I watched your video because it set a lot of things for me to consider first. It's a whole lot more to it then just loving the atmosphere of it. You hit the nail on the head. Stay true
I watched this video not because I wanted to open a gym but because I literally had nothing better to do. But I found it quiet motivating as well and it really showed that you have to find something you truly love to sacrifice everything for it. Thank you.
Alan, I pretty much never post comments but this video is perfect. I started my own business four years ago and spent a lot of time not doing the things that I love. But, it paid off and now I have more time and money. business ownership sucks and is awesome. Great lessons in this video.
this has confirmed what I have been thinking about doing for a long time. working as a part time personal trainer in a gym I don't own. in my current situation I would have enough money from this type of part time work thanks man
Great video, 3years into opening and running my own gym and completely agree with every point you made here! This video is valuable to any open out there contemplating doing it. I read E-Myth a couple years late but enjoyed the read non to less to understand more how I was feeling and where I was struggling running the gym! Thanks again Alan!
Great video you should do more serious talks like this. Also the E-myth was the first audiobook I completed. Great suggestion for anyone who thinks they want to start their own business.
Terrific advice. Especially the part about making your passion your full time job. Take note younger viewers who maybe haven't started college or picked a path yet - making your passion into your career will kill your passion. Even if it doesn't feel like it yet. Find something you don't mind doing and do that thing, to make money, to be able to keep doing your passion for fun.
Rad dude, dig this dude. I have had a free gym for 2 years. Spent over 10gs in equipment and knowledge. I also do house calls with sleds and trap bars in my van. All free and its about just getting people better. Building the business. Great content dude.
Very true! I started my own business a few years back and still work PT at a fitness centre. I'm lucky if I can get to workout 3x per week. It's a labor of love tho!
Love this video! I currently run a business and too many times people asume I just have a 9-5 office job. I have to be at work at 530 am and do not finish till 4pm most days. On lunch I'm usually on calls or setting up interviews. I take calls till 9pm and on several occasions had to get up in the middle of the night to handle issues. I've had to climb under trash compactors and come home with my slacks and polos so sweaty and covered in crud I've just had to toss them. I usually have to be at the gym by 330am to squeeze in a workout. I'd love to branch out and open my own business. I love the freedom I currently have in making decisions and running with it. I just want something of my own that I created. I thought about a gym or something fitness related but you definitely brought up some good points. The gym is my escape I don't want it to become something I hate.
Alan, thank you for sharing this. I know it's an older video but there's a lot of things that remain true to this day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
dude made an ask elliot episode about how to properly take a shit. I unsubscribed 15 seconds into the video and never looked back, little while later I saw a video of him throwing the tantrum of a 5 year old and it reaffirmed my choice to not follow that dudes mental deterioration
I've been following Elliott Hulse for a long time and now and i really admire him , and i just started doing something with my life just now the last 2 months. And randomly i saw one of your videos talking about squats, i thought i'd subscribe to you. Then i watched some other of your videos and when you said you've been watching Elliott Hulse too i'd more than happy to subscribe to you. I've watched some other of your vids too and you have quality and original content. You really are an inspiration to a lot of us who want to get out of our comfort zones but get stuck in the doubt disease. I'll watch your vids everyday from now on. You just been added to the people that inspire me and i admire. I hope that one day i might be able to inspire others to grow strong like you and Elliot. Keep growing stronger brother. Thank you, not only for your videos but for becoming the strongest version of yourself cause you give us hope and "permission" to do the same.
in owning a gym makes you a teacher enjoy showing and sharing people what you've experienced and understood, so you branch your own understanding outward
wow very informative video :) im thinking to be a personal trainer and i guess the same principles you said in this video applies samr to being a personal trainer. its also about helping other clients
Have you read the book "Hero with 1000 faces" or "Iron John"? Sounds like you pull some thoughts from it, but its also inherent in every man. The thought of embarking on a "Journey" is innate in all men throughout time and only some actually choose to accept said "call" to adventure. Alan I can see your personality and know you have great character from the trials you have faced and conquered. Video made me tear up a bit because I feel like I'm at the same place you were when you left the marines. I am leaving my hometown January to start my own "Hero's Journey" and have the same tenacity and fire in my stomach to succeed in what I want to do. I'm glad to see you are successfully doing yours. Love these videos, God bless.
Great Video! An other thing people don't think about when they want to open a gym... I had to unclog the toilet twice today... Everything is not all roses, when you own a gym.
very true and great talk that hits in exactly the right spots, when it comes to careers one taught me that their is only real 3 fundamental choices we have, are you a builder, a healer, or a teacher do you like creating things, do you enjoy saving lives or do you enjoy teaching people, and of course many dynamics and mingling between the two but what stands out to you most, idk just thought id share hahaaaaa brutha man! keep it flowing!
I own my own business - you are right on the money - 2 years into my adventure, I've had the highest of highs, and lowest of lows- the most difficult yet most rewarding job ever- The struggle is real
Emyth is a great book. Definitely a good read. There are many people who enter the entrepreneurial space on the base of the dream and not the practical element. I full agree with your perspective and well put. Self employment is not a vacation. It is a harder hill to climb with tons of risk. However, if success is found through your hardwork, the payout can be better.
man I think I've been following you for over two years, but I don't know anymore... I mean.... you drive a Dodge 🤔😅 Glad to see how much the channel has grown.
I definitely agree with the being told what to do, when and where and being judged based on your rank. I served 3.5 years in the Army and yes just like you guys in the Marines, we are micromanaged as well.
thats the best reason : you dont want that uncertainty - "what would have been when" - for the rest of your life. regret is worse than failure in my oppinion. loved your video, thank you!
This was a very motivating watch, thanks :) Asks that funny question of whether making your passion your job / studying your passion at school will maximise enjoyment and time spent doing that passion or alternatively, take away some of the joy. Seems like you knew it was something you had to do!
Thanks for your tutorials bro im now able to deadlift 6000 pounds
that all?
Tokkule light weights
10,000 lbs with 2 vultures sat at each end of the bar.
Beat that?
Rich Piana told me to just go out and start a business. Any business it doesn't matter. Just do a business. And he's rich and fucking jacked. So he must be right.
Phlegm Atic You're bein' sarcastic, right?
Rich piana is richer and more jacked than you
Phlegm Atic Yeah, he's also a notorious scammer and a huge(no pun intended) proponent of anabolic steroids.

95% synthol

bro this is the best channel on youtube hands down
Elijah Hoban get out
I want to open my own gym so I can revoke peoples memberships who don't rerack their weight, and/or do it properly. Is that a good reason?
yes
Possibly the best reason. Surprised he doesn’t talk about this.
I want to open my gym because i hate the gym
just kidding haha
eloi simonet ahahaha dying ahhaha
Excellent video brother...You and i are definitely on the same path...Can't wait until I get out there and we can talk about this in person
man your videos are the best!
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Zane Zakai instablaster ;)
@Cohen Junior i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.

@Cohen Junior DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED! Just got access to my Instagram login within roughly 30 mins by using the site.
Just had to pay 15$ but definitely worth it =)
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
Should an alcoholic open a bar?
Amen
even an alcoholic needs drinking buddies
I feel like I've been given bad advice.
Yes
Apparently.
This is so true.

Makes sense. Gym owners are business people, not athletes.

does it mean, no matter what sort of job we do, we will eventually hate it?
AWESOME VIDEO

What most of these people would benefit from is a home gym. Pays for itself and convenient.

Alan, you are the father Gotham needs.
This is an absolutely great vid. Have you ever thought about doing other vids on how to get started or how to go about the process?
Thanks for being honest and real. Most fitness/strength related videos now are extremely lame with people bs'ing everything and false enthusiasm.
Great advice sir. Actually waited 30 years before I opened my gym and it was worth the wait.
I love that this is applicable to pretty much everything, great video!

The only attraction at the start of a business is those who can assist in making your dream a reality. other than that, these other people have no use for you in a respective sense.
Great video Alan! I love training and love the idea, however what you have stated is totally the case, I love training and not necessarily training others, etc. Keep up the videos. Thanks
Very well spoken. I love that you can apply this to all aspects of life, not just opening up a gym. Great video.
Thank you so much Alan for this video. Very insightful and thought-provoking. Huge fan from Saudi Arabia!
same here, from jeddah checking in :)
HashemSmashem fan from Tunisia! Also, greetings my suadia arabian friend!
That's good advice. I was thinking of trying to open my own gym. I'm glad I watched your video because it set a lot of things for me to consider first. It's a whole lot more to it then just loving the atmosphere of it. You hit the nail on the head. Stay true
Sobering and real-world life advice. You're one of my favorite youtubers
Thanks Allan. You're one of the few who understands opening a business & how to keep it going.
I watched this video not because I wanted to open a gym but because I literally had nothing better to do. But I found it quiet motivating as well and it really showed that you have to find something you truly love to sacrifice everything for it. Thank you.
Alan,
I pretty much never post comments but this video is perfect. I started my own business four years ago and spent a lot of time not doing the things that I love. But, it paid off and now I have more time and money. business ownership sucks and is awesome. Great lessons in this video.
Damn bro, fierce. More stories like this please.
serisouly great video. especially the end about sacrifice and struggle
Thank you for this video man, I've been a bit stumped in something I want to go after, and the "create a lifestyle" part really helped
this has confirmed what I have been thinking about doing for a long time. working as a part time personal trainer in a gym I don't own. in my current situation I would have enough money from this type of part time work
thanks man
This was one of your best vids. The bulking rant as well. Getting down to the truth.
Solid advice. Not just for opening a gym, but for any career path.
I'm transitioning out now and I gotta say this video hit home with me. Thanks for all the content Alan, you're the man.
Keen insight from a wise dude. Thanks for posting Alan. You deserve every good thing that comes to you.
good vid. really brought things to light.
Alan in my sacrilegious opinion you are the most genuine fitness youtuber by far! Congratulations, keep it up!!🤘💪
Great video you should do more serious talks like this.
Dude your vlog intros are enTHRALLing!
So much truth. Showed this to my brother who had this crazy idea, think it really gave him food for thought
Thanks Allan. You spoke words that I needed to hear today. I appreciate hearing your thoughts.
Alan, thank you for sharing this. I know it's an older video but there's a lot of things that remain true to this day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
like elliott hulse, except not insane
I always direct people to Alan for this reason. He gives it to you straight. Whenever newbies ask me for advice on form and such I send them here.
Elliot's not insane. I get the joke... but he's not insane.
Emil i was gonna say that lol, i love Elliott ❤❤❤❤
dude made an ask elliot episode about how to properly take a shit. I unsubscribed 15 seconds into the video and never looked back, little while later I saw a video of him throwing the tantrum of a 5 year old and it reaffirmed my choice to not follow that dudes mental deterioration
SventheViking elliot is a beast
I just have to say, I'm new to your videos and you are a genuine inspiration. This video really hit home for me. Thanks for sharing brotha
You are a wise man Alan. I have been a business owner for ten years now in a completely different business but I did it for the same reasons as you.
Stan Efferding mode
wow very informative video :) im thinking to be a personal trainer and i guess the same principles you said in this video applies samr to being a personal trainer. its also about helping other clients
Awesome video Alan !!! Really an eye opener ....You are having a clarity in what you're saying ..
Great video, for any business idea. Nothing worth doing is ever easy.
Early squadd
Edit: You dropped some gems in this video thanks for sharing, I'm not planning on opening a gym but I still learnt quite a lot.
Bro I love how you actually head over shoulders when switching lanes
very insightful, an i also dig how into the train untamed mantra you get at the end of every video
A basic premise with a powerful message.
Brilliantly articulated Alan! Nailed it.
Hell yeah man! Honestly! I Always enjoy the content you produce. Thanks!
very true and great talk that hits in exactly the right spots, when it comes to careers one taught me that their is only real 3 fundamental choices we have, are you a builder, a healer, or a teacher do you like creating things, do you enjoy saving lives or do you enjoy teaching people, and of course many dynamics and mingling between the two but what stands out to you most, idk just thought id share hahaaaaa brutha man! keep it flowing!
I own my own business - you are right on the money - 2 years into my adventure, I've had the highest of highs, and lowest of lows- the most difficult yet most rewarding job ever- The struggle is real
Love your videos Alan! This is good advice for anyone considering opening a business.
I truly appreciate these vids bro on opening your own gym. U give me hope!
Good advice no matter the challenge. Insightful
I served 3.5 years in the Army and yes just like you guys in the Marines, we are micromanaged as well.
thanks for the quality content Alan!!
thats the best reason : you dont want that uncertainty - "what would have been when" - for the rest of your life. regret is worse than failure in my oppinion.
loved your video, thank you!
This was a very motivating watch, thanks :) Asks that funny question of whether making your passion your job / studying your passion at school will maximise enjoyment and time spent doing that passion or alternatively, take away some of the joy.
Seems like you knew it was something you had to do!
Wish I say this 2 years ago, awesome advice like always! Respect!
I'm enjoying the frequent uploads.
