My dog (13 year old lab/collie started pooping indoors occasionally, so I went back to basics with training, praising and rewarding him every time he comes back indoors from the garden(regardless of whether or not he has "performed"). Since then, there have been no more accidents (about a month in so far) and he is verbally "asking" to go outside as he used to.
Also, I have recently reduced his kibble and increased his real meat(I've always given him some offal or other meat with his food) . The effect of this has been remarkable. He seems to have got back a lot of his old lovable mischievousness, which simultaneously both annoys and delights. The other day we played "chase the hand" (a game in which my hand pretends to be a mouse which he try's to catch it with his mouth) which we hadn't done for ages. He just seems to have perked up all round. He'll be 14 this June.

I have a 13 year old westie who I play with on a regular basis and the play time is almost always initiated by her I try not to push her to do anything she can't do but from time to time whenever I start to think she slowing down and it's ok because she's old and should take it easy she surprises me with her athleticism I think the reason she's been able to stay so healthy and active is because of the regular exercise she gets and once I notice she's getting tired I try to stop our play times but I do have to say I didn't know about the nails thanks for the information now I know another way to keep her happy and healthy as she gets older :)

Nice video. I have an old lady that needs hand signals as she can't hear too well. I have to feed her.with a fork sometimes due to worn out front teeth. Sometimes the fork feeding gets her more excited about eating. A little cat food mixed her food helped when she didn't want to eat. Also a spash or two of cream. She lets us know when she wants to go out, and has an evening of daily walks, which is on her time and lets us know it! It's a little tough to see her having some age problems, but the little extra time it takes to keep her happy and feeling loved is definitely not a inconvenience for me. We are best friend.

13 almost 14 yr old Border Collie owner here! His teeth are worn, he's got some lumps but, he still hikes with me..not as intense as he did 10 yrs ago. I agree on not getting them out and moving.. I got busy one month and I say a huge difference..he was stiffer and poor balance, we're back at it and he's ahead me at all times.

McCann Dogs My dog has Old Dog Vestibular Disease stemming from a fall where she jumped off the bed and landed on her neck face first and was screeching once it happened. I thought for sure she broke her neck. She quickly got cataracts, loss of hearing, vomiting, eye twitches, fainting & at times her back legs give out or she can't walk straight. She is 15 years old but it all stemmed from this accident. My vet is out until July 9th and I'd rather take a holistic approach to this anyway. She also pants for no other reason then when she's in pain (I'm guessing). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Lena, that sounds pretty serious. If all of this is from one traumatic event, you may want to find a vet that is available to see her. Sounds like she is having a really tough time and I wonder if she has pinched a nerve? When we had a dog with vestibular, we took her to a registered canine chiropractor. It worked wonders! She was a lot more stable, and had a lot less eye twitching. I’m a little worried that your situation is a little more serious if it’s stemming from an isolated event. Make sure you give her a dark, quiet place to relax when she’s hanging out. That is helpful for dogs when they have vestibular disorder. ~Ken

I am a groomer and I never knew this about keeping their nails trimmed that far back. I have a 14 1/2 yr old chihuahua that until 2 weeks ago had never been sick but we almost lost him. He s home know and seems to be getting stronger each day but it’s like he forgot how to eat and is very off balance in the AM. Veterinarian has no answer as to why he’s off balance.

Is your dog still doing good?

My grandma has a 11-12 year old standered poodle. She only walks him 2 times a day. Resently the dog has been acting very weird like Peeing inside, barking, and etc. I have seen that she dose not walk him for 30-45 mins. She only dose it for 10-15 mins. I'm trying to tell her that for his breed he needs to be more active, she wont do it. What should I do? My dad is a vet so I can talk to him but other wise I'm stuck. Should I take maders into my hands and use wag or something? I'm going to look into it more and talk to her but I need help. Could someone tell me what to do or give me some advice?

The length of the walk could be a small part of her problems. There are lots of ways to exercise an older dog’s body AND their brain! Sometimes some fun home made games can be engaging enough for a dog to feel more relaxed in the house after playing. Playing tug can be one way to get put some of that extra energy. And it’s fairly low impact! Just be sure her poodle understands an “out” command first. And if he doesn’t, then teaching him a new command is a fun way to work with him.
It sounds like he may need a little more supervision when it comes to peeing in the house. He may have somehow forgotten what the rules are about that. It’s not a big problem through. Your Grandma just needs to make sure that he doesn’t have free run of the house, so he can’t make that mistake without someone catching him in the act and interrupting him with a “hey” or an “oops” then taking him outside to pee. He will never truly understand what he is doing wrong if there isn’t some kind of verbal marker within 1 second of the action. So have your Grandma supervise him more for the next little while. And if she can’t supervise him, have her put him somewhere safe like his crate, or an area where he can’t damage anything if he makes a mistake. It’s also a good idea to have a vet check him out to make sure there isn’t anything physiologically wrong like a urinary infection.
      Hope this helps!

REAL FOOD, stop dry kibble, research proper diet. Start slow. Reduce kibble and add real food
(Pumpkin purees, 100% pure, no salt no sugar peanut butter for treat, eggs, etc so research) moisture content in food

hot weather is really hard, i know. if you can get him out first thing in the morning before it gets too hot, or hose him down first - or douse in water from a bucket - he can be nice and cool on a walk. my dog has a black coat so I usually do that in summer cuz his coat gets super hot. i also avoid black surfaces for his paws.
