Unless your dog eats home made food. You could feed half the food, or two thirds and give them treats then finish their meal after the training session.
Still unmotivated even when hungry. It's like... she kinda prefers being lazy and stubborn over food. I feel like between getting an awesome treat and demonstrating to me that she isn't gonna obey, she willingly chooses the latter as a more attractive option..
i load treats into my pups crate as i get ready for bed, i usually find her sitting outside the crste waiting to be let in, i put them in back too. From day one she’s always been required to hold for release out of the crate, and at the door and gate, so important to have them managing their impulse control. My puppy is about 7 weeks old. She was in the closed crate at night in our bedroom since the first day we brought her home. That was 3 weeks ago and only at night, locked. During this video, I brought her crate onto our porch, she immediately went in. 😊 From now on, I’ll bring it wherever we are. Btw, she is a rat terrier.

My dog loves her crate. She will snack in her crate. If you give her a treat, she runs to her crate. The crate door is open all day, she goes in and out voluntarily. At night, all we have to do is telle her time for bed, she goes in her crate and we shut the door and put a towel over the crate. She is only 4 months and this is her routine. Leaving the door open all day is good. When I go shop, i give her a treat and she goes to her crate. I will then shut the door and tell her she must stay and guard. I am trying to teach her that when the crate is really no longer needed she will just go in, door open and rest and relax until Mummy comes back home. In the morning we open the door and she takes her time coming out, she is very relaxed and loves her

@@jesseenixonI know it’s been 2years since you asked, but I’d like to offer an answer. Crate training is specifically used to get your puppy in a structured routine of toilet/obedience training while giving them a space of their own they feel relaxed and safe in. Once they have learnt the rules and behave appropriately inside the house, they can have more freedom until eventually the door gets left open and they choose to go in and out themselves.

These are great videos, I especially love the idea of "creating value" for the dog when it comes to the behavior you're wanting. And showing examples and the idea that the reward comes from inside the box, so smart, but I never would have thought of that, and now I have a better understanding how how to fuse the behavior you want with their brains reward system. Genius. Come to think of it, my wife did that to me years ago and I just didn't know it until now.
I crate trained my all my puppies alone with baby gates. I have not had to use them for my newest who is only 1 in a very long time. This video was a reminder of methods to utilize. Along with great tips for continued success should I require them. Thank you so much 💖

This video is so incredibly valuable! I had to place my puppy, whom I brought home only five days ago from about 500 miles away, in a crate for the drive home, than a lot during the first three days because he was not potty trained. So he didn't like his crate. Then two days ago I was able to start crate training following your suggestions, and he already walks into the crate on his own. I'm so very grateful for the wonderful videos you share so generously❣❣❣ Between your videos, and another trainer that I follow, I feel that I'm in a great start with my puppy❣❣ 🙏🏾🙏🏾💜🙏🏾🙏🏾
I lost my girl (Pom-a-Poo) after 16 years. She LOVED her kennel. My kids would lock the kennel door so she couldn't get in there. I had to explain that her kennel was like her personal space and to never lock her out if it. We always kept the door opened until bedtime or when we went out. I was thankful she never minded being locked in at night. If an emergency happened we'd know exactly where she was.
Wauw thank you! I just got a puppy a few days ago and I only put him in his crate when I'm going to sleep! I will make it feel like it's crate is a safe space to be in. I am going train him tomorrow or after tomorrow! Thank you again!
I swear I have the easiest puppy ever to train. He just strolled in his crate today and laid down. I've had him 2 days, he goes potty EVERY time he goes outside. He went all night lastnight without having an accident and only got a little fussy. (I implemented the technique you demonstrated in another video of tapping the crate, interrupting the behavior and firmly saying no, then praise when he settled down.) Didn't have an issue after that. And he stays out of his crate all day, but I have a gated off room and am with him all day. This way it is very easy to see when he needs to go outside. Unfortunately, the first kind of treats gave him diarrhea and he's not interested in eating kibble bits when I first started training sessions. He just takes it from me and puts it on the ground. Lol So I'm at a loss right now (until I find the right treat). I want him to learn his name first and foremost, but I don't have anything to reward him with other than praise right now. Any suggestions? I want to avoid playing roulette with dog treats. Lol
My puppy is a slow eater and isn't very motivated by her kibble either. I started soaking her food in warm water for a while and used her meal time to train her (hand feeding a bit of the soaked kibble as a reward). This way she eats more and we get our training in! Hope this helps but I can't promise anything, as all pups are different!
I was trying to crate train according to a schedule I found. the hour after he gets up for two hours, then another hour+ of play/train and back in for naps for another two hours, then play for a couple and one more time before bed. I think that's a decent schedule? But he's a door dasher and I tried that controlled gate opening "game" and he's getting it! nearly immediately! What sort of witchcraft is that?! He's a good young man who tries his best, still things I'm a chew toy, but he's only just about 8 weeks old. I've been binging your videos before I got him, and now when he's in the crate and I can have that precious two hours of peace to work.
You guys are awesome, outstanding crate training, you're so logical and explain it so it makes sense. Now i can correct my mistakes in crate training, so grateful for your videos.
Our new pup goes in his crate by himself but sleeping in there more than an hour, no way! :) He always lies wide, be it on his side or back, and I think he really doesn't get to stretch his legs. At night he only sleeps one hour in there but next to our bed (tied to a leash) he sleeps more than seven hours. He is bred to protect sheep at night in the mountains so we took this into consideration.
"Ok" or "free" is a release command. It's when you don't require their attention or stay position they are in. It's not a praise command. "Yes" or "Good" are foten used for praise to mark good behavior.
2.5 days with us at 8 weeks old. Shaking my head. She’s such a sweetheart and then goes Tasmanian Devil on you biting, lunging and biting. She doesn’t like the crate yet but will be quiet and sleep 5.5 to 6 hours at night with her Snuggle Pup and crate covered. Had my dear Sadie, also a Jack Russell, for 18 years so it’s been a while since the puppy mode. I feel like I’m failing her.
Totally understand. It’s not an easy thing to train a pup. My puppy seems to be getting it for 3 days and then bam. Back to square one. Hang in there. I’m having luck with high value treats, like cheese or chicken nuggets ( that I get on sale). Best of luck!
Fantastic advice as always. We've been practicing this from some of your previous videos. It totally works & very quickly, my pups go into their crates & eagerly wait their treat. Many thanks.
I have a friend who recently got 2 pups, sisters. Sadly they were kept in a barn until the time he purchased them . They were 7 month old Boxers. They're now 8 months. They are going outside for walks & exercise & they do their business outside. But when in they're being paper trained which they have the hang of. Problem is security for both but one of them is actually very high strung. Even gets herself up onto counters & tables. I think she has too much freedom & doesn't quite have limits on her behavior in this regard ( getting into things). The other one is less inclined to do most of that stuff. I tried to tell him to crate train her but he's afraid she will be disturbed by it & thinks it's cruel. I've tried to explain that it can really help her with security while also help keep her safe BC now he's not able to leave his home. Not hard to see how this is a huge problem. I also told him she'd unlikely defecate inside crate if taken outside first. Any suggestions ??Thank you.
Definitely recommend the Kong classic dog toy, you can put Kong Stuff’N Easy treat in it and your puppy will be entertained for hours. I also recommend getting the X-Small size because the larger sizes are meant for larger dogs and the one I recommend is perfect for puppies.
@@kellycorl8319 I would get a larger size than the xsmall (it’s tiny). Kong has a great size guide on their website. I’m getting a mini schnauzer puppy and planning on buying a size medium. You don’t want it to be too small (choking hazard, tongue getting stuck, too challenging and causing dog to give up). They also have a puppy version
Helpful. But. Hm. The dog already knows the release word “ok” as well as “one more time”. So this is the final result. Would love to see this with an actual new puppy or even older dog that is not pre-trained but being introduced to the confined space of a crate first time. A breed that is less eager to please would be great to see as well.
This video has been invaluable to me in getting my puppy to enjoy her crate. The issue I’m still having is she hates when you close the door and leave the room? Also, when she’s home alone I have left a recording on and she cries and barks the whole time. Any advice? Thank you.

At 9:37 when he said “be proactive,” I immediately thought of the “be, be, proactive” cheer. And then the words appeared on the screen and I had a good laugh!
Do you have a video for how to train the "okay" release command? How does the puppy know that okay means they're allowed to stop doing whatever they were being asked to do?
Say okay and give them the motion that it’s okay, you may need to give them the food or pat on the ground for them to come. for example I have my puppy stay before he may eat a meal, I say take it when he is allowed to eat. Eventually they will connect the word “okay” or whatever word you use with being released

I have two Llasa puppies and I have them both in the same crate and this seem a little uncomfortable for me. Do you have any advice for me on how to go about it. Should I get a different crate or divide it for the two of them
Great info! I am bringing a new puppy home this weekend. I cannot wait but also still learning as much as I can beforehand. My plan is to use two different crates. One in the basement entertainment room, with a wide open area to play and train in. I will put up a play pen as well. This will be a metal/cage crate. I also want to teach her to like her plastic travel crate so I can move that all over the house dependant on where I am at the time. I would bring it to my office so I can get some work done while she naps, I can pay attention to if she needs to potty, etc. I also will bring it to the bedroom at night and place it near the bed. Is having two different crates going to be a huge deal? Especially with a 7 week old puppy? Can I go about crate training the same for both of the crates? Should I emphasize one over the other in some way? I really appreciate the help and advice your videos have provided me already. Thanks for all of them!
Loving your videos...so what do you do with your puppy BEFORE they are trained to love their crate? Do you not use a crate when you first bring them home, and wait until they are happy to be in there?
Yes, that's what we did. Our pup was 8 weeks when we got him. He missed his mommy and litter mates and the crate was traumatizing for him at only 8weeks to be left all alone in it. We allowed him to sleep with us in bed for the first 2 weeks. After that we put in crate for short periods of time for about a week. Then at approximately 3 weeks he started sleeping in it with no issues. He has NEVER pee or poop in crate either
As a suggestion, I have 3 dogs. 16yo, 8months & nearly 3 months. I’ve always considered myself as a someone who has a decent understanding of dogs and ability to train them. Since adding a 3rd puppy it’s been a difficult process. He is a Rottweiler. Fantastic puppy, however, having 2 puppies the 8 month old who is such a well behaved fella (German Shepherd x Husky x Staffordshire bull terrier) constantly distracts my Rottie due to energy/enthusiasm. Due to his age of 8months he is also very jealous, but loves the rottie. He just needs to be engaged at all times when trying to train the Rottie. I would love a video on how to train in a scenario where you have multiple dogs. Without isolating, if that is possible? I’m definitely getting there but it takes much longer and I can’t find any videos online.
100% agree. Its been a while since you commented this, but I’m struggling with the same problem. I have a 3 month old border collie, a 10 yr old border collie mix and a 1 yr old cat in a smal apartment. This can be exhausting at times
I have owned two dogs before but I forget how I trained them yet they were stubborn and still peed in the house from time to time like twice a month. My fault probably. Sorry this is so long thank you very much, Peter
2 weeks in to having my puppy. He hates the plastic crate but loves the wire. He’s at the point where he’ll whine when he goes in for about 5-10 minutes and then settle down and relax. He willingly will walk in, but then will whine. Is there something I can do to help him not want to bark or whine immediately before settling. Or do I allow him to whine. I feel like I’m doing something wrong
Thank you for this content! We have a puppy who is a door dasher, to the extent that he is not motivated by treats in a situation like this (getting out the door has higher value than the treat). Suggestions for what to do in this circumstance? Just verbal "Yes" reward?
Well yeah, basically. Dogs are motivated by food. And in the absence of food fall back on routines that have been conditioned. Why not use that fact to their and your own benefit.
Ok I have to say it would be nice for you to ACTUALLY train puppies. And not Australians. Most of us know they are beyond smart. How about you train other breeds. Especially true training like 8-9 weeks old. That’s what most people need.
Our pup is really good at night without any blanket or mat in the crate. Should we just turn on the heater during winter whilst crate training? Or do you have any other suggestions?
How do stop your dog crying in the crate. I've covered it, I put her in for naps during and at night. I let her out regularly. I've started the crate training your doing and encouraging her to go in on her own with treats. It's everytime I'm out of sight, I don't think its the crate itself.

Our girl loves her crate/ den/ safe space. The door hasn`t been pushed too or closed since she was 8 months old, shes 4 in January. Although it takes up so much space, we couldn`t take it away from her. She has the run of the home and garden but loves her crate. If anyone has doubts about getting one. Watch and learn and dont think of it or use prison.
Reading these comments I feel so lucky, started crate training my 4 month old puppy yesterday and he slept in it all night last night for the first time, didn’t whine or cry once 😅
Today's my 12 week old German shepherd puppy's first night in a crate. She whined a few times but nothing crazy and is settled now. I spent a lot of time working on having her in there today. With treats and praise I hope I'm able to rest easy and not worry about her for a little aha mama more stressed than she is.
This is very helpful. Our 8-week puppy refuses to go into the crate after 3 days crate training, even with high value treat
I've watched so many of your videos and I love them all. What I would so appreciate is knowing how old the puppy is that you're working with. It's hard to determine the age and if my 8 week / 9 week old puppy is ready for certain types of training so It would be GREATLY appreciated if you added a comment about the age. Thank you, Lisa
Hello Lisa how are you doing today
My dogs love their crates, I leave the door open all the time, they even don’t mind when I shut the crate doors, they look at it as their safe place and their own space 🥰

Hello Donna how are you doing today
It is always nice to see the examples but it is always with very well trained dog. Great to see what you do in the beginning
I would like to see this with a puppy that has never done crate training.
@@miguelalmeida5516 their demo dogs are properly trained to at least stay in there.
@@OscarHanzely have u really watched the video? They used a dog that has had no crate training...
And I tried this with my aunt's 11 months old puppy, that has no crate training, and it worked...
@@OscarHanzely not true. Anything more difficult he used a trained dog that hasn’t been “crate trained” lol
Just got my puppy last week and we put him in there whenever he was tired. Wired crate plus a bed and then during the day do the treat trick to get him used to going in. Once he got used to sleeping in there for nap time we left it open.
tried it with my 2 months puppy, it works amazingly well:D
I pick up my border collie x koolie puppy Jasper in four days, I’m super excited! These tips are awesome! I used to never like the idea of crate training but now I think it’s such an amazing thing that your dog could have. Thankyou for all the videos they are super helpful!
You shouldn’t put your dog in a crate ! Dreadful !
@@angelapopham3221 Im confused about the crate the only thing I can see as useful is that if they are small and can get into things or for puppy training only but not anything else. What if your dog needs to protect your home and hes locked inside.

What about when i am sleeping and his crate is in another room? And i dont want her crate in my room what do i do
More like it helped confirm that I’ve been doing all the wrong things. I’m failing my girl miserably.
Does this work for any age? My pup is 11 months and he needs a lot of work with this training
Maybe this could be an idea for another video?... How do I best prepare my puppy for being comfortable driving in the car and flying? Thanks!

@@drwrencho4392 what's the more humane alternative? A boat? Giving them away?
@@destituteanddecadent9106 i mean, you got a dog knowing it depends on you and trusts you, if your gonna go on a selfish trip then its probably best you leave the dog with a family member or a friend but sending that dog in a crate through the airport sorting system and into cargo is messed up in my opinion. I would never put my puppo through that, personally. If you're moving its a different story still awful the dog has to go through it. As for the car most dogs frikken LOVE car rides lol

I have xoloitzcuintlis and cocker spaniels.. the xolo is more stubborn funny enough
Sense of humor is awesome
Such a wealth of information. Thank you for all that you both do!

Hello Maggie how are you doing today
I finally get my puppy tomorrow! 3 weeks of watching you guys and I feel ready
Good luck! I'm getting mine in 2 1/2 weeks!
Congratulations! And Happy Training! ~Ken
I got mine 2 weeks ago
Unless you’ve had a puppy before, you are never ready for a puppy.
Chris Bing Yep, just learned the hard way lol watched at least a 100+ videos before getting my puppy. 3 weeks in now and I still don’t know what I’m doing 😅
My puppy Kobi that I got yesterday got quite upset when it was crate time last night but I immediately started seeing a difference!
Hello Teri how are you doing today
Lol it’s just the second day. How’s it go over time
I was trying to crate train according to a schedule I found. the hour after he gets up for two hours, then another hour+ of play/train and back in for naps for another two hours, then play for a couple and one more time before bed. I think that's a decent schedule? But he's a door dasher and I tried that controlled gate opening "game" and he's getting it! nearly immediately! What sort of witchcraft is that?! He's a good young man who tries his best, still things I'm a chew toy, but he's only just about 8 weeks old. I've been binging your videos before I got him, and now when he's in the crate and I can have that precious two hours of peace to work.
id like to see a series on bring home a new puppy and how to get through the bark scream howling 👀 it’s so difficult
The barking and howling is killing me😞has me considering rehoming

This is incredible advice - I tried it for 3 minutes and it honestly worked! Thank you so much!
You guys are awesome, outstanding crate training, you're so logical and explain it so it makes sense. Now i can correct my mistakes in crate training, so grateful for your videos.
Hello Maria how are you doing today
Our new pup goes in his crate by himself but sleeping in there more than an hour, no way! :) He always lies wide, be it on his side or back, and I think he really doesn't get to stretch his legs. At night he only sleeps one hour in there but next to our bed (tied to a leash) he sleeps more than seven hours. He is bred to protect sheep at night in the mountains so we took this into consideration.
How to add value to the "ok" command. And when is it to be used? When satisfied with behaviour? Meaning after praising?
"Ok" or "free" is a release command. It's when you don't require their attention or stay position they are in. It's not a praise command. "Yes" or "Good" are foten used for praise to mark good behavior.
Thank you so much! Рахмет! Спасибо!
Been watching your videos for years and finally get to use the knowledge! We are picking up our puppy in two weeks!
Hello Taylar how are you doing today
Thank you. I'm in training.

Hello Pat how are you doing today
This was super helpful advice and got straight to the important parts of puppy training!
thats what she said ☺️
I have a friend who recently got 2 pups, sisters.
This is a great channel, it's amazing i had the most well behaved pit bull without Knowing any of this, he was just smart i guess.
My puppy loves his crate. I open the crate and he doesn’t want to leave 🐶 He loves to relax in his crate
You referenced safe toys they can keep in the crate. Any suggestions for those toys? Thank you🐾
Definitely recommend the Kong classic dog toy, you can put Kong Stuff’N Easy treat in it and your puppy will be entertained for hours. I also recommend getting the X-Small size because the larger sizes are meant for larger dogs and the one I recommend is perfect for puppies.
@@noahfinance1340 thank you so much! Any other suggestions are welcomed. New puppy coming home end of June and I’m trying to do some prep work.
Thank you for all your videos I have used them all to help with training all my foster dogs😊😊
This video has been invaluable to me in getting my puppy to enjoy her crate. The issue I’m still having is she hates when you close the door and leave the room? Also, when she’s home alone I have left a recording on and she cries and barks the whole time. Any advice? Thank you.

How’s it going so far?
Having two crates is fine, how is it going i can help?
I
have owned two dogs before but I forget how I trained them yet they
were stubborn and still peed in the house from time to time like twice a
month. My fault probably.
Sorry this is so long thank you very much, Peter
Isn't that crate to small for Dasher? It's looks pretty confined.

Hello Karen how are you doing today
So literally, just feed your dog treats whenever you want them to do something.... got it!
Well yeah, basically. Dogs are motivated by food. And in the absence of food fall back on routines that have been conditioned. Why not use that fact to their and your own benefit.
That and keep saying “yes” or the command you want associated with that behavior and eventually your treats will be forgotten
The treats are very tiny it’s not like a whole dog cookie.
Pretty much! 😂 Training in a nutshell
Ok I have to say it would be nice for you to ACTUALLY train puppies. And not Australians. Most of us know they are beyond smart. How about you train other breeds. Especially true training like 8-9 weeks old. That’s what most people need.
What kind of treat can I give to my German Shepherd 10 weeks old for training?
I just use pieces of their dog food
Is it better to train in a crate like this, vs a big metal crate? It is divided, for just enough space for him to get up and lay down.

How do stop your dog crying in the crate. I've covered it, I put her in for naps during and at night. I let her out regularly. I've started the crate training your doing and encouraging her to go in on her own with treats. It's everytime I'm out of sight, I don't think its the crate itself.
