anybody else ironically trying to silence their dog while you watch this video and they hear the dogs barking?? hahaha thanks for the tips, McCann! really appreciate this channel!!
I trained my Aussie to go to his mat and lie down when he barks and when he’s quiet he got a treat but he’s so smart he now barks and then goes to the mat for his treat! 😩 also barked the whole time at the vets office
My dogs are very protective and when they see someone .. up a ladder because my fences are high.. I don’t say a word.. I calmly walk in front of them and they stop barking immediately and I make them go on the verandah and calm down.. the second they calm down I walk away.. we don’t have to say a word.. it’s all attitude.. calm and assertive attitude.. This woman is good.. and her advice is refreshingly helpful.. and I hope more people watch her..
Back off barking solved! Watched this video last night. Workers came to the house this morning, usually my German shepherd goes crazy. I acknowledged what he saw and redirected to him finding his ball. He didn't bark the entire time they were working. Thank you so much!
You're the best, my German shepherd puppy of 3 months started barking at night when he hears the door of the house got open or so, I was glad and encouraged him, but then I started to wake up, go walk to the door and show that there's no risk, and return back to sleep,💖 he's a gem, except for biting my foot and long dresses 😂
My dog's a back off barker and I could cry coz this worked super fast..literally immediately...he's a mix between a boxer and a bull terrier and it worked instantly...thank you so much...love from Cape Town South Africa🇿🇦💞
Wow! For the first time someone has given me a full understanding of the bark types and solutions that don’t involve treats. I’ve been saying quiet and rewarding, comforting, and nothing has worked for our 11 month old Frenchie. She’s a back off AND buddy barker. Can’t wait to try your techniques first thing tomorrow! I’ll report back! Thank you!
Man, we have a buddy barker who is about 7 months old and it's soooo hard to do this. He is a border collie/chow mix and his persistence in barking is just larger than our patience most times! He is SUCH a loud barker and will go over 30 minutes straight barking at you if you ignore him, never getting a good place to slip in and give him more to do. He also has WAY more energy than us.
Our dog is a senior rescue dog He barks for hours if we can't get him to stop. I recorded him for 4 straight hours following me around and barking. Nothing I tried got him to quiet down. He only does this to me. Frustrating.
when your dog does all three of these barks🤦♀lol but why she totally came for me with the "quiet! quiet!" tho😂😂😂 I definitely needed this video. Thank you McCann Crew!
You're fortunate. Mine barks at the back fence all the time. There's nothing there. I tell her stop, quiet, come...Nothing. Sometimes I can tell her "bring me your ball", "bring me Bob", or "bring me gator" and she'll get whatever toy I request and bring it to me and I'll play with her. But far too often she'll hesitate a second and continue. Part of the problem is I can't remove her with a leash, because she's terrified of them. We're working on it, but can't wait until that's fixed to work on the barking, so I don't really know what else to do. 😥
Best advice I’ve heard about stopping your dog from barking. I will do this repeatedly & hopefully it eventually works. Will get back with my results 🤞🏻.
Thank you!!! We got a precious little rescue doxie mix last week whose barking was out of control. Even someone standing up set off relentless barking. I tried very unsuccessfully to stop if. Then I watched your video and saw myself on every “what not to do.” I used your “isolate” technique today right after watching your video. I would remove him from the room for about 15-30 seconds and then welcome him back into the room. I had to do that 4 times and now he is chilled out in my arms even with the neighbors working in their yard. Thank you!!! Other than barking, he has been the best little guy. Now he’s pretty perfect.
We have a rescue Doxal (part Dauschand (not spelled right), part Beagle….she barks aggressively with hair up at anyone who comes, no matter if we let her know it’s ok they are here…sometimes if we don’t keep an eye on her, she’ll even try to nip at them…mainly men, but women too. she also chases everything, and my son just moved back home with 4 cats. I’m stressed to max. they have always been indoor cats and never even heard a dog bark, due to where they lived, until now. They are so scared and won’t come out from under the bed . I’ve done everything this lady said; nothing stops her…😭
I have three dogs in my house, only one is mine and shes a little ringleader. She does all three and gets the other two going. Ive been trying for five years to get her to stop but now that Ive got another puppy on the way, this video is a saving grace. Ive seen so many other videos that just dont explain it as well as you guys do.
My dog doesn’t bark if we are outside and the garbage truck stops, or the mailman or people walking by. But if the scenarios are the same and he is in the house, he goes crazy barking. Running from window to window. Uncontrollable. He’s a big dog. Good video
Wow! My dog is a 'back-off' barker and is so rigid at the front window it's like she's stiff from nose to tail. I've inadvertently been reinforcing this by a combination of a) trying to ignore it; or b) shouting "sshhh" or "Jess - QUIET!" which I've now discovered are both wrong. Just tried the 'confidently approach the window as a leader' method (I had to do this twice in the space of less than 5mins) and on the second occasion Jess fell silent as she saw me approaching and had only 2 barks come out of her mouth. I made an exaggerated 'look' out of the window while she sat calmly, then as I walked away she actually hopped down from the back of the armchair and followed me quietly into the kitchen. Can't quite believe this worked straight away. Previously it would have been a good 30 seconds of frantic barking usually including her nipping the plants on the windowsill or grabbing and worrying cushions and throwing them on the floor.
Great video. My dog is 11/2 years old. I was give him 5 months ago. I am his 5th and last owner. He had never socialized before I got him. He was so fearful when I got him, I had to open the door and walk away so he would go outside to use bathroom. It is slow but, he now looks forwards to walks.
OMG! Instructor Carol, this is amazing. It seems to be working right away. I have 2 young border collies and their barking has been a big issue. I have been trying but have accidentally reinforced it in some of the ways you describe. I thank you. My neighbors thank you.
My dog was doing a combination of bored and alarm barking. Putting her on her place has been a miracle cure. I had tried everything and nothing else had worked. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Thank you for such a clear, helpful and comprehensive video. I’ve admittedly done many of the wrong things. Our dog is 17 months old, we’ve had him for 3 months, he’s a great pyr/golden retriever so still in puppy mode but is already the length of our bed when he’s stretching. He’s so great and gentle with dogs, puppies, kids, sleeps all night and is the last to get out of bed. He gets tons of exercise everyday but oi still the barking sometimes. He’s all 3 bark types lol. Great pyrs are livestock guardians. When he is reacting to something he may deem a threat, the back of his fur turns into a Mohawk. I’ve read the term for that is raised hackles.
I've got a buddy barker, and I discovered all of my distraction attempts simply reinforced it. I am looking forward to success following the instructions in the video. Thank you!
Thanks! I'm totally new to dogs, recently adopted an adult from the Shelter, and I'm learning so much from your videos. We'll be ready for Obedience Training at this rate. :)
Thank you. I have a 12-pound back-off barker and this is great info. Like someone previously also asked, I'd like a video on anxiety in the car. She's anxious when we're going somewhere, but then fine on the way home, when she's tired. So I'm guessing she's not car sick. A crate in the car is not an option.
Just want to add that a secured crate is the safest option for travelling with your pet in the car in case of an accident. Buckled in with a harness can cause their ribcage to collapse on impact, and dogs that are fully free range will become a torpedo that will be launched through a window. Since your dog is only 12 pounds, a small travel carrier buckled to one of the seats or anchored in the cargo area is the best option. If your dog isn't comfortable with crates it would be worth your while to start crate training them
My wife started taking our (distressed) puppy to the car when it wasn't going anywhere. First times were short, and she sat in the car and stroked the dog. After a while she took a book and read for a while. We didn't take the dog anywhere for a couple of weeks until he was totally relaxed, then accepting a five minute trip, then driving to a great park he enjoyed. Soon he was wanting to get in the car!
Carol, just wanted to say you totally rocked this video. My wife Sara and I have learned so much from all these great McCann videos that we’ve joined Puppy Skills and have recommended your channel to all our friends.
A very helpful video! Mine shows a mix of the first two depending on if he considers what passes by a threat or not when he reacts so very glad the distinction was shown here.
Your video came up as a suggestion by UA-cam and I’m glad I did. I think we have a combination bored and back off barker. He is a male five year old, miniature poodle. He is a surrender dog, but we have no idea his background. We live in a high-rise apartment building. He is very alert with every noise. We’ve had him for three weeks. He is getting a little better. He’s such a social bulldog gets along with other dogs and people magnet. Ours is a senior high-rise, and everybody loves them. With a little bit of training, I think he could be a therapy dog. I’ve seen people anxious, calm them self with petting, the dog, he is such a blessing. Do you have any online training or other videos that I could purchase about barking? Thanks Mark
This is so incredibly helpful and you break things down so well! I have a back off barker in my hands thank you. Could you please do a video on how to deal with it when outdoors too ? I’m going to put this into practice x
Thanks so much for this video. It has helped me realise my dog has a mix of 2 barker types, bored and the scared barker. This has helped identify how I need to behave to help her. I think all the explanations on what we do and what the dogs point of view is to our reactions, was super helpful. Thank you.
I really appreciate and understand your teaching I raise my own service dogs since I'm the one with multiple needs I'm on 15 yrs of service dogs first one was donated as I was his siter, 2 one inherited from death, I took her to shelter she liked one1, we brought home, she has Cana 🥥picking up items if she doesn't go or Acts confused Bell 🔔 will show her or do it then Cana 🥥 understands,7 month I've had her now she takes clothes out of dryer, rings door bell, brings waters to fill frig, all going great this month 🔔 is 10, Cana 🥥is 2 Thanks again 🤟🏼
Thanks a lot for sharing! Mine is a 3 months old German Shepherd and she starts biting on ankles when in play mood or wants food. When we pull her out of the scene, she does the buddy barking and goes back to nipping. Definitely implementing the tips from now!
Great tips super helpful and practical! Thanks so much! The trainer was really easy to understand and broke it down in helpful easy to understand ways.
I did not mean to watch this entire video but found I could not turn it off! You are incredibly talented at explaining dog training techniques. Thank you.
HA! I think my 2 yr old pup is ALL of those barkers (at different times). She's a bored barker at home (car door slams, another dog barks, postman calls etc). She's a back off barker in the car if left alone for a few minutes, or someone walks past the window, or a stranger leans over her when we're sat nice and quietly in a cafe to say hello (because she's so PRETTY!). She's also a buddy barker if I don't do what she wants... Definitely. All of them. She's very VOCAL. I will take note and keep practising the right thing. Thanks Carol.
Very good video. My bored client barks for attention in boredom for me to perform so I started leashing her and bring her near me and sending her upstairs to the rest room which has helped but she does it now closer to me!
I have 2 7 month old dachshunds, brother and sister. One is a buddy barker, and one is kind of a back off barker. Fun. However, if one barks the other follows to see what's up. (They don't bark at the same time, whew) This will be very helpful as I live in an apartment complex. They just started this a couple of weeks ago.
Our dog is 17 mos. We got him at 3 mos. He had severe teething issues. He always nipped and pulled only one family member’s pajama pants. We actually learned a few days ago that if she has a toy or ball in her hand to throw our dog doesn’t nip and tear her pajamas. Our dog is a buddy barker and protective barker. We had complaints about his barking when people with dogs walk by our apartment. His hair goes up all along his back and I’m 72 I can’t get him back inside off our patio porch. He gets ferocious. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely 💯 appreciate this video. Now I know what to do to empower my dog to make good choices in those scenarios. Probably will replay this vudeo a few times to cement it in my brain. Have a clarifying question.. what about when the mailman drops off mail? She barks protectively everytime. I work remotely and can be on a call when this happens. It's stressful.
Amazing!!! Mine is a back off dog 😣 but what does a silver bullet means? My dog is overly protective and I can’t even have a normal conversation with a stranger without him barking or even if someone look at him and complements him he just goes crazy. It gets even worse if I am having guests over. Thank you so much for sharing these voluble tips.
I'm a "dog trainer in-training" as it were... and just wanted to say thanks for all the explanations to folks about why the dog's barking and why things haven't worked! I wish more people would take more care to find out why dogs do the things they do... it's not only interesting but makes the solution more effective and fair. 😍💗🐾🐾
This is so true. Where I fail is the middle of the night and I'm in bed back off barkers who live with me. I don't feel like getting up so I yell "Leave it!". When I'm up and they bark simply checking out what they're barking at stops the barking. Commanding "leave it" stops it at that moment but doesn't correct it. I'm not sure if I want to correct that. Good video.
Ahhh! I just left a comment on the “settle” video but I think I’ve found the answers here. I have a bored buddy barker/whiner I think? Thank you, Carole. Your training is so great.
Thank you very much for the explanation. I understand better, and the cases described have happened with my dog. I would like to check the program of how to be a leader for my dog.
Thanks for the tips. My dog became a barker around the time she turned 9-10 years old. It looks like she’s a combo of a bored and back-off barker. I’m going to try these tips out and see how it goes!
I've had my dogs since elementary, and uring quarantine, the number of dogs in the household only increased. My family loves having dogs around, but nobody took the proper initiative to train them. Now I'm trying to take that initiative, and so far it's going great. It's taking time, but they're starting to be more well behaved, and a lot of the ill habits they've used to do have now ceased. Thanks for the video! It really helped my 4 furry pals
I think this is the best bark video I've seen. My GSD is a back off barker. I've been doing what Carole recommends. I'm struggling because when I go "check out" what's going on, he is so arouse that he redirect and try to nip at me. It's the only scenario he will do something like that.
Thanks for the feedback. In your case I would suggest helping your guy be less stimulated when this happens. So I wouldn’t allow him access to the window to start with unless you are with him and have the leash right there in hand. That way you can lead him away before he gets so over the top. You could also try to set up situations that won’t prompt such a response. A UPS guy coming right to the door might be too much. But maybe asking a neighbour to walk calmly past on the far side of the road. And you could have him a little further from the window as well. And you definitely don’t want to reach for the collar when he’s in that state. Slow and calm with the leash already in your hand. You might even practice the redirection (for you and your dog) by throwing a piece of food or toy and then walking him away from it.
Just was given a 2 year old female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She was crated a good portion of her days, only out to go to the bathroom while on a leash, never taken for walks. She is so sweet, has made a great transition to my home but barks over everything. I can see she is easily trainable as I have a special bed for her in the kitchen and I simple say bed, point and she hops right up there. She will sit on command. She isn't a great walker on her leash, but I do take her for walks twice a day. Working on getting her to walk with me not pulling to go elsewhere. She DOES NOT LIKE MEN, posing a problem for visitors. A squirrel outside sets her off like a rocket while she is looking out the window. Sooo, where do I start?? I have been teaching her incorrectly based on your video I just am not sure what to tackle first.
Great tips. I have an alert barker (solved with these tips) but also what I think is like a buddy barker. Maybe more like demand barker. He is routinely crated so I can let my cats out on the main living area (dog is from a shelter I was told was okay with cats and I’ve only had him 2 months but he’s not safe with my cats … yet). He barks in his crate whenever my one cat is in sight, either directly at me or in the one cat’s direction. I’m not sure the best way to solve this. I feel like if I let him out and put him elsewhere, I’m rewarding him, and I can’t do it swiftly enough without the cat moving off somewhere and also rewarding him. It’s only the one cat - the other one he doesn’t bother with at all. That one can curl up in the dog bed next to the crate and no issue. Dog is 90 lbs (what the hell was I thinking!!) and his large crate has limited places it can be put. Rehoming any of these kids is not an option. Suggestions anyone?
My Boston Terrier does all the types of barking. He barks out the window and barks at me to play or for attention. Hope I can implement Carole’s training.
My dogs barked within the first ten seconds and my dogs are in all of these!!!! I cause my dog to bark when they are excited to see me :( I want them to be happy and give them attention:( lmao my dogs are bored all day… except at the dog sitters . Omg thank you UA-cam for stalking my habits and listening to me to bring me this video:) best of luck to everyone watching this video!!
Thank you!!!!❣️❣️❣️I thought my puppy hated me So your video taught me he's a ' Buddy barker ' and I have been doing the right thing, which was the last resort taking him to his crate Thanks again have a wonderful day 🌹 I subscribed 🛎️🛎️🛎️☺️
Extremely helpful. My puppy is a BACK OFF barker. My teen grandson has been here 3 days to visit. Every time he sees my grandson (coming out of a room for example) he barks at him like he is an ax murderer. Not sure what to do about this.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have a combo bored and back-off heeler/border collie mix.... His barking has gotten worse in the last few months. I cannot wait to get home and try these techniques! I will check back in with update!
Thanks! I will begin taking action today! My 3 year old toy poodle barks and is teaching my 1 year old maltipom to bark. I’ll correct my thinking so that I can get good results w my dogs.
Really helpful❤ and please let me know one more thing! How to stop my dog barking to guests? do you have any link about this problem?? 😢 ⭐️my dog is a back off barker

Thank you.
Thank you my one dog never stops barking gonna try this!
YES!!! I am watching the video while wanting to solve the issue!!
Thank so much for uploading these kind of videos. I would be lost with my new GSD without all these videos.
Great video! So helpful! Love the way you broke down the different kinds of barking to help us be more specific in our detection and in our training.
She s great. Age doesn't matter... My mentor was 72yr old when he trained me. THX 4 the video ....super!!!!
Carol's advice is always so clear, such a great teacher.
Thanks a lot for sharing! Mine is a 3 months old German Shepherd and she starts biting on ankles when in play mood or wants food. When we pull her out of the scene, she does the buddy barking and goes back to nipping. Definitely implementing the tips from now!
Like my 3 months German shepherd puppy 💖
I got alot out of this. I know it's going to take some time with each dog but I can see a difference
Great tips super helpful and practical! Thanks so much! The trainer was really easy to understand and broke it down in helpful easy to understand ways.
I got my new puppy a week ago now he only barked 1 time so glad I got such a good dog : )
@SyaneT-r4n yeah she barks now but not much only sometimes she sees other dogs especially cats aha !
This is a informative video. My Neighbors let their dogs bark and keep the windows and front door open!
I did not mean to watch this entire video but found I could not turn it off! You are incredibly talented at explaining dog training techniques. Thank you.
I love these videos and I'm glad you take some camera time because your personality is exactly the style I prefer to watch.
McCann , Thanks for sharing this , my pomeranian baby has all this kind of barks, quite stressed out sometimes on my own ,
多謝!
Thanks for the Super Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks for the Super Thanks!
Amazing training. Thank you. I’ve got a “back off barker” and a “back off and at times buddy barker” ❤️🐩
Brilliant,my chihuahuas have me well trained to their needs barking ❤
I’m trying to train my chihuahua now not to bark now. She’s 5 month’s old and she barks for attention and it’s driving me crazy.
Watching this UA-cam with dog bark sound made my dogs bark hysterically 😅
Well, my senior dog is the alert barker, and my puppy is quite the buddy barker 😂 I'm going to work on the buddy barking tips for sure!
Great insight into dog's psychology - helps a lot, thank you.
Great explanations! So many times it's hard to see the problem thru the symptoms, you really do a great job keeping it simple.
Great teaching, Carol. Thank you.
Best video with practical tips! Thank you for sharing your talents!!!!
Definitely a buddy barker with my 6 month mini aussie/tsu mix whom I would have liked to get trained for service
Thank you very much for the explanation. I understand better, and the cases described have happened with my dog. I would like to check the program of how to be a leader for my dog.
Buddy barker here....thank you!!
Thanks for the tips. My dog became a barker around the time she turned 9-10 years old. It looks like she’s a combo of a bored and back-off barker. I’m going to try these tips out and see how it goes!
Of course as soon as I started this video, my puppy heard the various barks and set herself off! Guess I should watch with earbuds in!
@Instructor Carol my dog is the same way. So would we tell our dog to leave it or good work?
Thank you!!! For this video can’t wait to join virtual training. ❤🎉 you have helped me so much I will practice this.
Carol you are amazing!!!
This makes so much sense.Thank you for your great videos.
The details in this video are amazing.
This is awesome! I am so grateful for this video! It was very helpful and informative!
This is seriously amazing. Such simple explanation and correction. Thank you so much!
Amazing video!! Thank you for that 🙏
Who couldn't listen to this video because your dog went bananas barking at it?
Yep, it's almost like we all know what barking sounds like and didn't need the barking sound in the video.
I just put in my AirPods.
This is so good advice, I was laughing aswell🙏🙏🙏
I needed this love your work
Perfect timing to watch this. Thanks (once again) Instructor Carol.
What great editing! This is great information in a very entertaining way.
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting 🐾
Happy Training!
~ Dan
My dog is all 3!
So thankful for this video and for the McCann Team ❤ (Wendy and Bella 🐾)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have a combo bored and back-off heeler/border collie mix.... His barking has gotten worse in the last few months. I cannot wait to get home and try these techniques! I will check back in with update!
Thanks! I will begin taking action today! My 3 year old toy poodle barks and is teaching my 1 year old maltipom to bark. I’ll correct my thinking so that I can get good results w my dogs.
She explains this greatly!!!
Really helpful❤ and please let me know one more thing!
How to stop my dog barking to guests? do you have any link about this problem?? 😢
