Hey @MORGANSMaintenance, Thanks for the mentioning Project Pine Hills! I remember seeing that question that was asked about your Milwaukee Compact Tool Box setup. I've been looking forward to this video! Thanks for making it!
That corner tape looked good; I'll remember that one. The best drywall tip I ever learned was to use a large damp sponge (the big ones, like you'd use to wash a car) to smooth drywall mud; no sanding, and NO DUST.
You inspired me so I decided to try mixing my hot mud with a drill. I modified a mixer to fit in my M12 Surge. I thought I could ease into it but forgot that it will impact as soon as it encounters enough resistance and the impact is violent no matter how little I push the trigger. It "surged" and now I'm wearing hot mud! Thankfully I had a drill in the truck and was able to mix it with that. I'll never go back to mixing with a drywall knife.
I’ve used “No coat” on outside corners with great success- they market their outside corners as able to withstand more abuse than metal. Id like to try the rollers they have available for setting the corners quickly but I mostly do patching and don’t have a great need. Great video!
It is good product, and I prefer the paper faced corners over the all metal ones myself. I have the rollers for applying them, not the type that apples the mud over them. It can get messy, so I only use them when I have a bunch in an unfinished space. It’s not worth it if it’s not
The way the corners are on them you don’t get as many edges you have to keep going back and removing either. I really like them. The 24” is a two hander, but my 14” and 10” I can use one hand
You may be able to find it but just like the 3m cubitron sandpaper that all rhe woodworkers rave about they have sheets... I cut my 9in disc's out of that and it dosent dig orcleave marks like mesh and being a 3m sandpaper it last a good long time.
I love my packout ammo can. I use it ranging from anything from a battery box to a plumbing box to a general/misc job box. Works great. Always enjoy seeing how other guys load out there boxes. Thanks for the vid
I have a 2nd one that I use when I go in attics/crawlspaces and need a few tools. I’d rather drag it in the dirt and hose it off than my toolbag or tools.
Nice setup. It seems that drywall finishing has the most differences between US and Europe, so I won't be describing it, because it's way too long. For anyone interested just look for Rigips tutorials. As for small drywall repairs I usually refuse this kind of services. It's too time consuming to do it right. When I do the drywalls and skim coating I do it from start to finish and I take as much time as I need to do it right.
Appreciate it. I will patch anything that is a smooth finish. I don’t get into matching textures on walls or ceilings. Too much risk for an unhappy customer in my opinion. I either re-do the entire wall or nothing on those.
Love rhe ammo can idea currently its a clear plastic tote for me. I use alot of the same stuff like fiberfuse but I carry 6in roll too I can skim flood cuts and gnarly spots behind coutertops were they never intended to finish it. Like you we have a product call perfect 90, crack tape and straight 90 they change what I have to bring on the jobsite. I'm a trowel and hawk guy and I use a level 5 .5mm curved extra flexible trowel yes it's expensive but has made my life much easier. The helpers get garbage knives and tools for a reason. There is a line of dewalt drywall tools at orange store (40ish) for the set are level 5 but the cheaper 30ish set is not additional shows.
My Orange store doesn’t carry the Dewalts in store yet… they do have them online but my Local Drywall suppliers stocks the Level 5 stuff so I went that route. I’ve been pretty impressed by their products so far. I have been trying out 1 guy rolling mud on joints and then I come behind with my skimming blade… poor man’s Box 😂
My hd only has them on random cardboard wing stacks that roam around the store both the cheap ones and level 5. I do wish specially stores were more available around here I don't mind spending the money if the product is easier or saves time.
Interesting how things are done in different countries. In the UK, the whole drywall and ceiling are plastered, usually with a bottom coat followed by a top finish coat. They only tend to use a flat trowel and hawk, the trowel is usually well used for backing coats and has developed rounded edges. I have seen specialist inner and outer corner trowels. Very little sanding is carried out, blemishes are usually troweled out as the layer dries.
I like to try and find boxes that fit what I need for jobs and not a huge amount of space. This one worked out. I’d rather decide two jobs between two ammo cans that put two jobs in a bigger one and have to take/dig through stuff I don’t need.
Perfect timing for this video. Level 5 is running their march madness sale which is the best prices they have all year according to their website. I was in the market for drywall tools so I went with your recommendations and was able to snag the all stainless steel set joint knife set (4,5, 6, 8 inch), the skimming blades (10 in and 14 inch), and the mud pan for a heavily discount price. Appreciate you for helping me build my tools arsenal!
Would you recommend the 16 inch skimming blade over the 14 inch if I dont have the 24 inch? I might purchase the 24 inch sometime in the future but for now I want to try out the smaller sizes to see if that purchase is worth it. Was debating about which middle size to get. @@MORGANSMaintenance
@RobertoDominguez-cj6fu I personally like the 14.. because then I can use a 16” pan and don’t have to hit it perfect every time to scrape my mud off. I can still use it one handed too. I’m not sure about the 16”… the 24” is a two hander. I’ve normally only used a 12” or 14” for my final pass with a normal type knife also. Me… I would go 14”
thanks for the video morgan.. i’m a painter and i currently have tough system..i use the large box for drywall (for now).. now sure how to utilize the other boxes yet..i did buy packout 2x but i couldn’t find a function for it.. thinking of trying it again for the drawers for caulk/paint frames/rollers etc.. and just looking for ideas for the drywall..i do like your setups/explanations. thank you!
You are welcome.. I like the drawers in my truck so far. Some of the newer brands latch shut without the little bar being put in place. I would like not having to do that, but it’s not too bad
@@MORGANSMaintenancewhile it’s on my mind..i also have the joey pouch from holstery..(didn’t think to use it for drywall screws)…i use holstery’s magmaster for drywall screws.. very strong magnet.. you may have it already.. just an idea..
If you like drawers, maybe look into Rigid boxes they are the only offering that allows you to have drawers as a bottom box with their detachable dolly
Even finishing a whole room is a stretch for me drywall other than hanging I tend to pass on work like that. When someone else can do the better easier cheaper and that's all they do call them. Let the union dust eaters do it ill stuck to my electrical that pays better and keeps me healthy.
I really prefer just patching. I normally do the medium sized jobs more for scheduling. If I can go from Frame to Finish and not wait on people that’s the main times I do it. I do sometimes hire it out if I have other stuff to do while they do it.
Yeah. I keep a roll of it, mesh tape, small amount of screws, and small amount of 5 min/20min in a crate. Just enough for patches on calls. If I’m doing a drywall job, I load up more amounts. I also keep the dust control buckets and lids which are 3.5 gallon buckets in my garage with a bag of 5/20/45 mud in my garage. A bag fits perfectly inside those buckets.
@@dangallagher6975 I just bought this mixer from level 5 amzn.to/3V5Ao7z I really like it. The shaft is a little long, but I just cut it off with a grinder. The kitchen beater works fine too if you have one of those laying around you aren’t using.. but just a suggestion in case you are buying one. The Joey pouch is nice since it closes up.
@@MORGANSMaintenance good idea.. yeah i’ve always had to go back and get drywall screws and put some on my magmaster.. i’ll transfer it to my joey pouch
They are more slippery, but not significantly in my opinion. Not enough that I’d rather have the others. I would get some that have that bump on the handle like the Level 5.. that really helps
When you buy level 5 (dewalt)knives in a kit like at hd they come eith rubber heat shrinks also available seprate for under 7 bucks for a few of them if that's a concern. I like black on dewalt ones over red of level 5

That corner tape looked good; I'll remember that one.

I have mixed results with wet sanding.. I ultimately just haven’t done it enough… but I wish I was good at it.

@@OnusBones 👍… they also sell some sponges specifically for it. I haven’t tried those yet

Yeah, the M12 drill on speed 1 is the way to go, then go to speed 2 to clean it off in a bucket of water.

I actually don’t mind doing drywall in smaller amounts or as part of a project. You all that do it full time are fun to watch.
I like the idea of the skimming blade. I always get mud on my knuckles using a 12” knife for that
