The Elysian sounds beautifully balanced and there's a natural separation between instruments and voice. There's also far more body. The Evo doesn't sound bad but everything is obviously more compressed in comparison.
I must say, the Evo 4 Series (have the 4.3 at home) deliver unreal clarity and resolution at that price! Absolutely mind blowing. I listened to a pair of Burmester B 25 just recently and the smaller Evos were just up in their league, it is simply stunning! In the end I decided to safe a few thousand bucks and went for the Evo 4.3!
I also have the EVO 4.3's and I run them with a 15 inch sub in a 6 meter split volume room and they sound absolutely amazing. I've had my eye on the Elysian 4 for a while now, and will hopefully be my next speakers.

The Elysian are pretty mind blowing when you settle into them. Sound very accurate and realistic. Very nicely balanced and interesting sound stage. Those might be my next speakers.
I bought the EVO 4.2's 2 months ago and really love them. The imaging is spectacular as is the fit and finish. They replace a more expensive pair of bookshelf speakers I've had for many years, The bass rolls off a little early, but I have a good subwoofer so that's no problem.
i have both b&w 606s2 and evo 4.2. both are excellent and sound amazing. but they have different sound signatures. i just love the warmth, depth and fullness of the 4.2. it has airy vocals that jumps at you. and it really does fill our living room with sweet soothing sound. perfect for whole day listening without being intrusive or distracting.
The Wharfedale have outdone once again themselves with the Evo and Elysian series. Even the Diamond 11 series punches way above the belt, what you get for the money is mind-blowing.
I would put the Evo 4.2 more than 50% by quite a bit. I have the larger 4.4 and cabinet size is quite a factor here. So would expect them to be a good deal closer. I think you need room size to take full advantage especially with the larger Elysian 4. Very large speaker. Elysians are more open sounding but UA-cam probably limits the differences one can hear a lot.
From the demo songs, the Elysian sound "effortless" in reproducing all the details, where there are instances the EVOs have a hard time providing a clear image, although those 4.2s do sound great nevertheless. I do have the EVO 4.4 and they sound fantastic paired with a Nord Purify Amp. The price difference with the Elysians is quite substantial and I doubt my ears deserve anything more expensive, but of course if I had the budget I would order them in an instance.
Since we live through corona times and all the non-essential shops are closed for live comparison I have read a lot of opinions about various speakers. Your opinions in different comparisons about the EVO4.2 was what made me go for it eventually. I hooked them up to my Harman Kardon amp and I like them a lot. I was about to aim for the Kef ls50 meta's but owned a pair of B&W's Dm602 s3, which are the same size as the Evo's. I felt like the kefs would be a bit of step back since I like the advantages of the 3 way stand mounts. The Evo's are a bit more detailed in the midrange and without the bloated bass of the B&W602/s3 which also makes them great for electronic music. The kind of bass of the 602/s3 works really well for Rock and Jazz but it kind of screws up everything with a 909 kick in it, it is there where it gets messy. The evo has a bass as it should be and keeps the ranges nicely seperated Overall more of a reference speaker then my old B&W's.
The EVO 4.2 was quite a familiar sound to me as I own a pair of 4.3's, and at first I thought there was something missing with the Elysian until I realised that it was a much bigger sound in terms of the venue where the recording was made. It was difficult to discern within all the barriers that UA-cam compression and so forth, but I've got my mind set on Elysian 4's as my next speaker. Thanks for the comparison.
@@samlee2562 mic is fine, on HD650 I can hear a lot of difference, in dinamics and the voice clarity of the singer which on Elysian is very sweet, crystal clear. On Evo Grace Mahya voice sounds a bit masculine, it doesn't have that sparkle of female voice.
Great demonstration of the law of diminishing returns: the Elysian 2’s are clearly superior, but for many, simply not worth the premium in price. Great job, thanks!
To me the difference between speakers sounds very small. I use SONY MDR-7506 plugged into my laptop's earphones output. Elysian sound stage sounds a little wider, lower base sounds a little deeper and highs maybe a little better and smoother (or maybe it's only psychological), but, difference between speakers sounds small. Definitely definitely not the 7 times price of the Elysian vs the EVO 4.2 . Maybe in different listening conditions the sound difference would be greater. I auditioned with Evo 4.3 ran off a PrimaLuna Evo 400 tube amplifier. Stunning sound. We also ran them off a solid state stereo amplifier, but was hard to go back after the PrimaLuna. It's made a decision to buy even more difficult as I'll be running off an AV receiver in a media room. I simply won't be able to replicate that sound at home :-(
I had the same dilemma when I bought my 4.3's albeit with a different hybrid tube amplifier. I ended up focusing on stereo sound with separates and don't regret my decision for a second.
Using my earphone with repetitive listening back and forth, not that much difference except Elysian has more clarity obviously. That means Evo is a very potential contender with a lower price. As you mentioned in other video, how a cheaper speaker can produce a better sound (Evo vs B&W). Thank you for this test. I would love to see if you can do a comparison between Linton and Evo 4.2. 😁
Earphones ? 😁 Use something like Senheiser HD600 which are neutral, with great resolution, powered by a proper headphone amp, otherwise it's pointless.
Thank you for this, I am actually considering the Evo 4.4 towers for my living room. I have to say I do see the difference between the two. Certainly the Elysian is fuller and richer but I gotta say I like the brighter sound on the Evo 4.2's. They may be a little to bright for some things but I may be able to fix that with amp or cables. Thank you again!!!
I'm not sure why you did this, because the massively more expensive Elysian 2 does have rivals in that price point, eg Focal Kanta 1, KEF reference 1, Fyne Audio 701. Also, because of the size of the Elysians with the 4 legged stand, logically you would have to include floorstanders such B&W 702 Signature, Dali Rubicon 6, KEF R11. The poor little Evo's are not really in this race, although by no means disgraced.
I had mostly watch and listen with one earbud via Bluetooth. Tonight I am using my music listening time to listen to this sound demo properly. I am using Macbook Pro M1 > Gustard R26 > ifi Pro iCAN Signature > 6XX, Focal Clear MG and HD800S. OMG! There is a huge difference between the Evo 4.2 and the Elysian 2. Is the recording distance of 13 feet also your preferred listening position? I asked because I do not have 14 feet distance, I only have say 9 feet.
Hey Tharbamar! Just wanted to let you know I bought the Sony MDR7506 you recommend. My initial impressions are great! Affordable, comfortable, really solid lows, and spatial sounding. Much better than my typical gaming headphones i've used in the past. Thanks for the suggestion: Not the worst way to spend $100
The Elysian 2s are stunningly beautiful, however the sound balance appears dominated by the deep and controlled bass, the midrange and tweeter seemed receded and unable to keep up in terms of sound quality.
The Elysian range from 1 to 4 is quite something else. After seeing numerous comparison tests with other speakers , some more expensive, the Elysian seems to sail away for the win over and over again. In this test with it's smaller sibling, the Elysian shone in virtually all depts. Natural, no coloration , neutral across the range and yet always musical. There is this thing that the Elysian does wherein it provides an incredibly engaging and immersive soundstage yet always providing that extra bit of focus to the central image in the performance at any given time. Tonality and timbre of instruments is brought with pinpoint precision, plenty of air provided around all elements of the ensemble. Pace rhythm and timing matched with an infectious musical side. The Evo in comparison sounds a bit more mechanical lending a metallic feel to the music. Details both on a macro and micro level are far superior with the Elysian. If there is a shortcoming with the Elysian it is the controversial quality of the stand design. Some retooling needs to be done in that regard.
Thank you for the comparison and your feelings ! I dream about the Elysian but my bank account can't follow it! I think i will buy the Evo, and combine with my Audiomat Alpha tube amplifier
Tharbamar, im becoming convince on the Ellysian 2, honestly in almost gonna gun for a proac D2R but now im thinking twice, this time I just want something I can live with for long time, cant keep upgrading, I wanna settle down with a long term speaker. In our country there is no demo of Ellysian 2, its only order basis. So I have no way of demoing, but base on what u say evo is 45 to 55, I need to demo an evo 4.2 to guage it:)funny also that the ellysian demo as if the singer is solidly between the speakers.even viewing on phone literally sounds like a solid person, the evo sounds like a ghost, like a person trap in between dimension, the person is there but not totally there, a silhouette or ghost :). This is crazy mind blowing!
I am considering between the Elysian 2 vs Dynaudio Contour 60i for my living room. I usually listen to Vocals and watch lots of Movies, thus also great to hear your thoughts about these two speakers in a Home Theater setup. Thank you again!!
Through UA-cam Elysian 2 sounds much better and more natural, beautiful vocals and treble! Of course, there is a big difference between price and size! Of course both play very well! Of course, I have a very good frequency hearing amplitude! Both are very beautiful speakers!
Elysians are more effortless, more dynamic, more separation, larger; the Evos sounded strained and raspy in places. I also found the vocals better on the Elysians...
It’s very difficult to listen to Evo 4.2 after Elysian 2 , it sounds like a bottom compared to Elysian 2. Generally incomprehensible - why a mid was needed between the tweeter and the 5" midwoofer ))
I am one of your fervent followers and I congratulate you for your informative, I should rather say educative videos. I have chosen the Evo 4.2 to replace my JBL A-170. Can you please tell me what speaker stand you used in this video?
Yep there was a very clear difference between the 2, the Elysian clearly handle the higher tones so much better and distinct. So much clarity and balanced tones out of those.
Now you know. If you want to listen to source you need big speakers if you want to listen to speakers producing music thats what smaller ones give you. Nothing fills the room with sound like that larger driver in a big enclosure IMO.
Great choice is you like the sound, I got bored with Elysian 2 after a few months couldn’t wait to get rid of it and if you look at them carefully quality of components were not up to their price.
Please tell me how we can buy $1k speakers after we listened to $7k ones? ) Evo is good, for sure. But this is like to drive a Golf and see Bentayga next to your car. After you switched back to Evo I checked whether it was still in stereo mode? ) But in one minute of listening they were totally fine =)
Do the Elysians and Evo's play well with the same amps or do they need amps with different sound profiles? What do you think the lowest price amp that makes sense for the Elsyian when starting out with them?
Great, very useful video. Thanks! One thing, not sure what microphones, positioning and pattern you used, but listening on my Abyss 1266 TC Phi headphones I can say that there are numerous issues that do not result in the Elysian’s sounding good. Some sound like a room resonance phasing issue, while others, inherent mic choice and setup limitations.
Hey, I have recently bought a pair of the Evo 4.2 and was wondering what the minimum distance is I should have them apart? Would you say no less than 6ft? Thanks
What are you listening on? Being a UA-cam video alone adds distortion and frequency imbalance, but on my speakers the Elysain are far more clear and lifelike than the EVO. The EVO sound good but not as good as the Elysian. EVO = $1000/pr, Elysian = $7000/pr. Each individual has to decide for themselves if the extra money is worth it.
There’s a definite difference in sound quality with those speakers! I am grateful for the recording equipment used so that I can get a better sense of the sound quality.
You're not going to hear the speakers' qualities, just a difference between the two. Doesn't matter how good the video is. You have to be in the room. The Elysians sound a bit bigger, as they should do.
To find the difference between the two is to find the difference between the advantages and quality of the two. And this video is not bad. It is just that you have to listen carefully on your phone to distinguish the quality of the two.
Good test. It would seem pointless to compare columns so different in size. But, they sound almost the same. Wharfedale Evo 4.2 acoustics have a cleaner and nobler sound.
Warfedale EVO 4.2 is a little brighter sounding. The Elysian has more bass. This is just a rough benchmark through UA-cam. It will sound different in your home.
FYI Speakers are optimized for my seating position at 14ft. It may look like nothing to many people but this is already a lot of work because sound is recorded with dedicated hires recorder and due to copyright issuesI I can’t do various music.
Hey again proved that booksheft speaker is much clearer than floor standing speaker! Evo 4.2 is much clearer lively full of emotions while Elysian 2 is more blur and sound flat!
tbh im confiused as hell, since i dont think that the difference between these 2 makes that extra money worth tbh... I'm impressed by the evos, elysian has a more full body sound with a lot deeper bass hence the size. But rather than that the treble and mid region is very hard to even tell a difference at least from youtube.
Now that I listen with good headphones it seems the Evo sounds in the recording slightly more open but had a midbass bump while the Elysian goes deeper lower but more closed In ? Or is it the recording?
@@Tharbamar Hello. If the Wharfedale Evo 4.2, by analogy, as you did with the Diamond series, increase the slot for the bass, in theory, the sound will become even better?
Surprisingly the Evo 4.2’s sound more like live music although they are less quality. The extra detail retrieval from the Elysian makes the song sound more like a recording than live music. Im bopping my head more on the Evo’s. Also Evo’s are more forward sounding which give a more live sound effect. Elysians seem more laid back. Not sure if this is just video or my ears 🤷🏽♂️

How will Evo4.2 compare to similarly priced Wharf D240, 11.4, 12.4? Someone on other channel commented on my question that for 19X9X9 feet room those floorstanders will be better. I know this is not a serious comment, as this is through a microphone, youtube, and my laptop, but I think in a way the voice may be a little more natural with the Evo 4.2, but the reason is possibly what is mentioned above, or that I have weird ears!
I'm listening to this on a small pair of studio monitors. The audio quality here is terrible. I'm not questioning your expert opinion. A verbal evaluation would make sense to me. To do a comparison like this you need to have an audio engineer tweek the room and use top end microphones.

Tough choice, try to listen them if you can.
I have not tried 60i to give you my opinion, thanks
Through UA-cam Elysian 2 sounds much better and more natural, beautiful vocals and treble! Of course, there is a big difference between price and size! Of course both play very well! Of course, I have a very good frequency hearing amplitude! Both are very beautiful speakers!
Elysians are more effortless, more dynamic, more separation, larger; the Evos sounded strained and raspy in places. I also found the vocals better on the Elysians...
It’s very difficult to listen to Evo 4.2 after Elysian 2 , it sounds like a bottom compared to Elysian 2. Generally incomprehensible - why a mid was needed between the tweeter and the 5" midwoofer ))
they sound remarkably similar except that the Elysian 2 sounds slightly fuller due to it's larger cabinet.
Most speakers sounds similar when the same song is played
@@davconelectric No they don't, why would some speakers cost 20x others ? you need to do a bit more listening.
@@skyengeh 😐
do we need to compare an apple to orange? i mean they are of not same category,,,simply the baffle size.
thanks for the comparison! What stands are you using for Eco 4.2?
You've done a comparison between the Evo 4.2 and the Quad S2. I would like to see a comparison to the Quad Z2.
I would but I’m not sure yet because I have some other products breaking in for review, I will let you know, thanks
You can get the Wharfedale Opus, the previous high-end model. The Opus will sound almost like the Elysian, but with a lot less money.
I am one of your fervent followers and I congratulate you for your informative, I should rather say educative videos. I have chosen the Evo 4.2 to replace my JBL A-170. Can you please tell me what speaker stand you used in this video?
Thank you, please check out this video.
Perfect Stand For Wharfedale Evo 4.2 Speakers
ua-cam.com/video/I43aPrvjch8/v-deo.html
Tks again
Yep there was a very clear difference between the 2, the Elysian clearly handle the higher tones so much better and distinct.
So much clarity and balanced tones out of those.
Now you know. If you want to listen to source you need big speakers if you want to listen to speakers producing music thats what smaller ones give you. Nothing fills the room with sound like that larger driver in a big enclosure IMO.
I’d love for you to review golden ear speakers if possible!
I’d put my Elysian 2’s up against about anything within reason. Replaced Bowers 702sig for me.
Thank god for wharfedale for making 3 way bookshelf speakers ....it's become very difficult to find these type of speakers.
kef r3
@@kurtzcol it's got concentric drivers & it costs almost 2700 dollars in india...almost three times more expensive the Evo 4.2
@@masterchef6694 i know i own them
@@kurtzcol oh.... that's great. Reviews say that r3 is probably the best sounding bookshelf speaker for 2000 dollars.
Thanks
it will be depending on the room size, 6ft part with 15 degree toe in should be good starting point.
@@Tharbamar That's great just what I need to get me started, I'll use it as a starting point and go from there. Thank you for your help 🙂
This recording does not clearly show the difference between the two pairs of speakers.
@@blueboyblue
If you listen carefully, there is indeed a difference in the sense of the sound shows the size of the speakers.
What is this for a stand for the evo 4.2?
I got a Wallace and Gromit advert at 15.52.....slightly ruined the experience! 😫
Good test. It would seem pointless to compare columns so different in size. But, they sound almost the same. Wharfedale Evo 4.2 acoustics have a cleaner and nobler sound.
In your opinion, what would be the ideal room area for the Wharfedale Elysian 1 columns?
If I remember correctly I had Elysian 2 in 24x14ft room with big opening to the left of it, that would be minimum or bigger if you can.
would love to see elac vela 407 and 403 next to these. thanks.
Warfedale EVO 4.2 is a little brighter sounding. The Elysian has more bass. This is just a rough benchmark through UA-cam. It will sound different in your home.
Could you set the microphone at 10ft please, and use a few various genres of music?
FYI Speakers are optimized for my seating position at 14ft.
It may look like nothing to many people but this is already a lot of work because sound is recorded with dedicated hires recorder and due to copyright issuesI I can’t do various music.
And bring me a coffee while you’re at it... 😜 I’m kidding.
@@Tharbamar hey, have you had a walkthrough of your recording setup already? I am looking forward to see them. Thanks in advance.
Direct compare 10:24 vs 12:13
4.4 is very impressive. The Elysian isn’t that much better and considering the price it’s not even close. I’d go for the Evo 4.2
Hey again proved that booksheft speaker is much clearer than floor standing speaker! Evo 4.2 is much clearer lively full of emotions while Elysian 2 is more blur and sound flat!
The physical works for deeper sound.
Hi Tharbamar, how beig is you room here?
It’s my old room, I think it’s 14’x20’x9’ with big opening to the left.
tbh im confiused as hell, since i dont think that the difference between these 2 makes that extra money worth tbh...
It’s other way around, recording method is the same and recorded one after another.
@@Tharbamar I agree!
Same
Is it ok to use the Evo 4.2 in a small room? my room is 6x5 meters
It will be fine.
@@Tharbamar Thanks for the reply, how about in desktop use, is it overkill?
Can you compare the EVO 4.4 ? Elysian is awesome !
do you think tubes eg Prima Luna would work well with these?
Big difference between these two on my Lintons with Elysian 2 clearly the superior speaker.
Tharbamar would the Elysian 2 work well in a home theater set up as well?
This was fantastic.
Great job & watch of the too sounds better for movies?
They're both great for music or movies.
Se sont 2 superbe enceintes acoustiques moi même je possède des wharfedale Evo 4.2 et gens suis entièrement satisfait leurs grande qualité acoustique et le raffinement des timbres son magnifique un régal

Can Elysian 2/4 compare with B&W 805D3 /804D3? Are they same level speaks? Very curious, hope to get your answer!
Elysian 4 is the best!👍👍
listening through my Glowmaster 300B SET paired with Roger LS 3/5a + AB1 , Alysian is superior in every aspects.
The Elysian compared to a B&w 805? Which is better?
How will Evo4.2 compare to similarly priced Wharf D240, 11.4, 12.4?
Someone on other channel commented on my question that for 19X9X9 feet room those floorstanders will be better. The woofers wont keep up with AMT.
I am concerned with midrange. For bass I have SVS PB1000. Will 4.2 keep up with these floorstanders.
I shall use with Yamaha RXV677 AVR without any amp. Currently I have WharfD220 Bookshelf which are small especially now I have Klipsch RP450C centre. I want 3 way speakers for midrange.
I dont mind timber matching LCR.
Do you mind sharing the name of the artists name (colour of love) in this comparison?
Her name is Grace Mahya, I may have links in the video description. Thanks
Just want to ask whether that Evo4.2 is suitable use as nearfield speakers or not?
I know this is not a serious comment, as this is through a microphone, youtube, and my laptop, but I think in a way the voice may be a little more natural with the Evo 4.2, but the reason is possibly what is mentioned above, or that I have weird ears!
Please use headphones for better experience.
@@Tharbamar Good point
I didn't catch the name of the amp you are using
Denon PMA-SX11, everything is listed in video description, thanks
And comparador with linton
I'm listening to this on a small pair of studio monitors. The audio quality here is terrible. I'm not questioning
your expert opinion. A verbal evaluation would make sense to me. To do a comparison like this you need
to have an audio engineer tweek the room and use top end microphones.
Just my guess that you may need bi amp to drive elysian 200 watt each ch to get full benefit. I am thinking to buy evo for mcintosh 7200 but worry the treble roll off too much... The b&w 706 could be good match with mc but could be still sound too bright.thanks for your chanel have both of these brands being reviewed.
