I can’t stand all the comments saying „there’s hardly any house left“. Surely it wasn’t their plan to dismantle it that much, but you gotta adapt to the situation and throw out what’s not usable. I‘m sure their heart is bleeding not only because of all the work they have on their hands, but also for the vision of the house they had in mind when they bought it. (Though they still can build the house of their dreams with most of the old house being dismantled)
We all have to keep in mind that they have to build a safe house where they can live for many many years, even if that means to leave behind their and our initial expectations.

From the early videos you can tell it wasn’t the plan. They just kept discovering things that were rotted or not up to code or just plain wrong. They had to strip it to basically nothing because of how badly it was originally built and how badly it was rotted. I bet if they knew just how bad it was they wouldn’t have bought it.
so many people looked at that house before and said no. You know why? Because everyone saw the roof and KNEW that this house would be rotten to the core. I knew that from the first videos.
They could have sold that glass!!!
It was too heavy to carry & too difficult to move around. Glass panels like that are very fragile & dangerous if break while moving

They will definitely need a roof soon. They don't call Vancouver part of the Pacific NorthWet for nothing. If they are lucky they have until about the first week of October to put a new roof back on the house before it starts raining for 7 or 8 months.

To witness how these two young adults work together and communicate with each other is the most incredible experience. It's absolutely heartwarming.
Before I married my wife she said we had to do at least one home improvement project together. We did and I guess we passed, because we're married.
My husband and I built a gazebo together and it was ROUGH. I am really impressed by them.
This house got so lucky. The only reasonable action for any regular person would be to demolish and rebuild from scratch, but with an audience you were able to give it a chance to save would could be saved. Turns out that's basically nothing in the end, but you really gave it your best shot. It's a joy watching you work together. Great communication skills.

@mariedilly3649 yeah they didn't really build it well so anyone living in the house they bought would be pretty sad you saw how gross it was you cant just patch that and plus the patch would lead to breaking the whole house down anywat based on how messed up they built the dang thing to begin with so all in all they are doing a service to the house by breaking it down an rebuilding it Correctly
@@mariedilly3649 I mean, they've taken out everything that's rotted, including what had carpenter ants and was a danger to both anyone who would have bought it, and their neighbours. The structure is still intact, they have kept the stone, the pool, the yard (cleaning it up, though).
When something has been so neglected, for so long, it needs to be repaired before it can be safe. The fact that they are saving any wood that isn't absolutely unusable, and they will be putting it back into the house means that they are saving money, but also that they are still doing what they can to keep it original, considering how unlivable it even was.

We bought a house, built pre-WWII, in a historic district in our city. Our plan was to remove an un-permitted, out of code, wing off the rear of the house, reroof, replace all the windows and doors, knock down some interior walls, install new plumbing, wiring, HVAC, and fur out the interior walls. All plans approved, ready to go. Roof was tackled first, and we discovered there were 4 layers of roofing. Upon removal, the walls began swaying. A City Engineer came out and requested our contractor to remove a portion of an exterior brick wall, and discovered it hadn’t been properly attached to the foundation. Another wall was removed, with the same results. He ordered the structure to be demolished. Okay, so we had a foundation, right? Also, as slab. Core samples were taken….slab was 1” thick in some areas, 2”, 3”, and 4” in other areas….plus, there was absolutely nothing that tied the footings to the slab. Everything was scraped to the soil! The neighbors came out with pitchforks and halted the project, reporting us to the Historical Planning Commission (HPC).
Within 24 hours, our contractor proved that the project had been reviewed (and approved) by the HPC, including the possibility of a partial demolition, beyond the removal of the illegal ‘wing’ (built by a past beloved citizen). We were always planning to keep the original footprint of the house. They scratched their heads, said it appeared we were rebuilding the original house, and honoring the building stock of the neighborhood, so they green-lighted the project.
It took 18 months to rebuild the house. Neighbors made it very, very challenging, as we were constantly being reported to every possible City department (water, sewer, streets, greenbelt, lighting (we’re a ‘dark sky’ community), trash, the gas company, the electric company, the post office (the old mailbox, present off the street side for decades was suddenly “impeding pedestrian access”). Every aspect of the project was built to code, with permits. The inspectors would arrive onsite, shake their heads, and grumble, “Not this property, again!” The house looks like a showcase from the street, so now a few of the neighbors have decided we’re worth rubbing shoulders with. We’re keeping a cordial distance.
Oh, and cost? It was nearly a wash, as it takes so much more effort to fur out an existing old house, as well as reroute new electric, plumbing, and HVAC. The extra money we spent was the demolition, and the unexpected new foundation.

May I suggest using 1 piece of wood to make kitchen tools (wooden spoons, tooling pins, etc) and the extra nails you pulled to commission a blacksmith to make a knife or decoration as a piece to remember all your hard work

I would not second guess the decision to dismantle the house layer by layer. When you started, the house looked quite sound. As you peeled back the layers, like an onion, it made you cry.
Nonetheless, the upside is that you have content for the next three years. Looking forward to it.

@@itsbritney1270 I really think they were relying on the merits of the high-quality lumber of the day. To be fair, all the shortcuts held up for all this time, and if not for water damage, nobody would have known.
The builders of our house put a nail through a water tank pipe. It held up and sealed the hole until it rusted away and gave us a nasty surprise inside our coat closet. Unfortunately, we don't open that closet frequently, so we didn't notice until it had been leaking inside our wall for a few months.
you also have a concrete structure, a pool, a beautiful fireplace and a wonderful view, do not be discouraged, we trust in the process
You got a pool, a foundation, and at least a few walls left. That's at least 10% of a house.

I don't know about where you are, but my mothers house burned down last month, and she had no insurance.So we have to do most of the clean up ourselves. We have been hauling metals to the recycle place...and right now copper is going for about $4 a pound. We've hauled in enough scrap metal to be able to rent a bin soon. My husband asked me why I am watching the destruction of a house? Its because you are building your future , not loosing it. I started watching your crochet videos and have to say,"I love ALL your videos and the direction your channel is going. I can't wait to see the final walk through when it is finished.♥️🙏

Sell the scrap metal! I’m sorry you are stuck in such an unfortunate situation but scrap metal (not just copper) can usually be sold so at least you can get a little money to help

Sometimes rules change and you are not allowed to build a new structure but you can "repair" the old one. The whole roof-saga hints in that direction.

Right. The economics aren’t strictly that it’s cheaper or more efficient to bulldoze and build new. UA-cam content turns that logic on its tail. The fact that we are all watching a nail-by-nail replacement in 30 minute episodes is why. I just hope they have the 24-month bird’s eye time lapse for the 200 million view shorts when the house is finished.
@@stevenbrentson8 but the large amount of manual labor might mean the whole thing still ends up costing a lot more than they make from ads or sponsors.

I appreciate how methodical you were with the glass, and breaking the glass. I cringe when watching “home improvement” shows and “demo day” is just smashing everything to bits with a sledge hammer. I lived in a very fancy-architecture mid-century building near Chicago that had been in all the magazines. It had single pane glass that left us cold all day and all night from about October through April (and a flat roof built under "Lake Effect" snow, among other dumb ideas). I have a lot of thoughts about budgets here, but the idea of trying to put in double pane glass is something I completely support if at all possible. May as well do it now.
@@qtrfoili understand it was better to replace it but they could have sold them. The way it didn't shattered when they threw it on the ground... That's some very good quality glass right there. Or they could have used it to build a greenhouse

I realize that setback after setback would be so very hard to handle. But when you are feeling completely demoralized, just take a few minutes, look at your incredible view and imagine getting to see that first thing every morning for the rest of your days. I’m jealous!
thats actually so true! i hope they will see the day that this will be a reality because i feel bad for them now :/ though the content of the demo is so nice!!!
It helps that they have the income to weather all these setbacks. Jenna had the funds to purchase this $2 million house and filming this demo/reno is their job. They can devote all their time to it and everything they do makes them money. They also have living accommodations separate from this house and it appears no hard dealine to accomplish this.
Basically, only UA-camrs could monetize this whole process and make it profitable.

Re: the nail in the sewage pipe: a few months after I moved into my current apartment, my and my next door neighbor's plumbing started backing up into our toilets and bathtubs. I got maintenance to get a plumber out the next day (it started happening at like 9 pm) and the plumber said the problem was a cable company had run an internet cable THROUGH the sewer line! I don't even know how that's possible!
There are boring machines that can cut a tunnel to run cables underground, they likely cut through the sewer pipe.
I can't even imagine how stressed you guys were when you discovered the actual extent of the structural damages. But you've taken so much in stride and I admire you both so much for seeing to maintain sanity!

Reminds me of a lone house on a street just outside the village near us where the owner painstakingly replaced every wall, one by one, and finally replaced the roof. He circumvented the ban to build the *new* house there by replacing the old structure with a new one, bit by bit, which was allowed... Bureaucracy can be a pain in the ... neck.

Sometimes it is easier to renovate then start from scratch when building. My neighbor had a single car garage and instead of knocking it down to build a big two car garage, he renovated it. He expanded the existing concrete slab and kept two walls. It made the permit process a lot easier.

Oof. While this wasn't your plan, I think that this is a super valuable lesson for people (like me) who advocate for saving old houses. Sometimes you have to rip out more than you'd like and thats ultimately okay. You and Nick are doing such a good job and I can't wait to see what you end up doing! I hope you allow the original house to have some influence on your design plans (but built right this time) ❤ I think especially replacing the large windows and wood flooring! Those are some of my favorite parts.
I hear you. I mean they have the plans they can still use that to their advantage in rebuilding. I know the house I grew up in needs this same treatment built in the 1800s know and tube wiring...its just not a patch worthy investment

I work with a remote mountain village that is owned by a nonprofit, and was built in 1937. We had to completely gut and renovate one of the dorm buildings (28 bedrooms over two floors in one building) due to bedbugs and mice, and surprisingly, the worst damage done to the building was by the original 1937 plumber. Just notched out studs and joists wherever he wanted to make the pipes run.
You guys should take an episode and go over what you hope the house will look like with drawings so we can get an idea of what you're building toward while you do it.

years ago I bought a vintage camper trailer. by the time I was done, I had rebuilt the entire thing (wood frame) from scratch and basically trashed everything but the aluminum siding and the trailer frame. your house reminds me of that. good luck to you guys!
I must say that I am impressed with the knowledgeable skill and rate of speed you've had while dismantling much of your house. And during all the trials and tribulations and stress you've had to deal with you're still being calm, respectable, civil and loving towards each other. Up until today...I have been so impressed how careful you guys were not to break the windows...
They were single pane windows. IMHO, they needed to go.
I'm gonna say the nail in the waste pipe wasn't the reason for the roof rotting. I assume that pipe carried up through the roof to provide venting for sewage gases to escape so the pipe penetrating the roof, especially a flat roof is always going to be a potential for water infiltration. Because the pipe was hidden in the walls, you'd never see the drip drip drip over time within that cavity until you exposed that rotted horror show! I cringe alot when you guys work on this (I've done my own gut rehab of my home and done it professionally a long time ago) but I give you kudos for your energy and enthusiasm!
I mean its already an issue but if that area/post stack sagged a bit due to the nail hole leak then that sag would transfer all the way up causing more and more problems.

Jenna, just imagine how much fun you will have when redesigning / building your home and you can run network and power cable to all the places YOU want them to be :)

Also I still can't really get over the fact that this fiber/arts and crafts channel has turned into a renovation channel. It's like one of my favourite UA-camrs started making videos for my partner, a carpenter. But I'm totally here for it.

my house was built around the early 60s and every time I have a professional over to work on something they just mutter sadly and say "what the hell were they thinking". very similar to nick's reaction to a lot of this house.

Welp wow. I am hoping that concrete slab is all you hope it can be. No fatal flaws. Seeing this and knowing my hubby is the most ocd general Contractor of all time, i really appreciate him.
I think that a wonderful idea to build it back the way it was in tribute to the previous owners , being it was handed down 3 generations . This house still has love by the people who are trying to fix it . Please keep it going . The previous families that were in there , one could still sense .
I'm glad to see you get rid of all that plate glass! Those are just a bunch of heavy razor blades waiting for someone to crash through them. Such a pity too that the entire house was compromised by ONE nail through the plumbing stack! I've been in so many homes of this era to plan for remodels, and honestly, a lot of the sketchy framing you see is typical of that era. I still shake my head at it every time, but it hasn't fallen over in all these years (the good wood, not the rotting wood) so I guess that's a win? Anyway, looks like you have your work cut out for you. Best of luck!
That glass would have made a great greenhouse.... With all of Jenna's thrifting videos it just doesn't make sense to me that she is just throwing it all away. For example it doesn't make sense to trash a beam or a board just because one end is bad.
@@chickadee- The glass isn't tempered so it's dangerous if it gets broken because it will turn into large razor sharp shards. You can see when they crack the glass it doesn't shatter into small pieces, modern glass will shatter into small pieces.
I was crying with every broken pane because I need a new one for my greenhouse!
@@heathermacneill3854 I would not recommend using this type of glass for a greenhouse, or for anything for that matter. As you can see it breaks off into massive shards that could seriously injure someone if they fell into it or it broke for any other reason. If you have a used building supply depot near you, your best bet would be used double pane glass patio doors. You will have to remove the glass from the frames, but it is tempered glass and breaks into tiny, relatively harmless pieces when broken. Best of luck!
Sad to see you break the glass that came out in one piece, I'm sure it could be reused somehow. Maybe try to find a place that recycles window glass?

“Floating” is how you bring down large pieces of scenery. A flat usually doesn’t weight much and without windows or doors so the air pressure creates a pillow on the floor. Oh, no trap doors. They will allow the air to escape.
I cant imagine having this much energy and drive. It definitely puts my house's problems into perspective. It was built in 1967 and we just bought it a couple months ago. The previous owner neglected it pretty badly, but they only had the house about 6 years. This series makes me feel way less overwhelmed.

If you end up making a proper crawl space, I would recommend laying down a waterproof tarp and placing a dehumidifier in there. You can probably find some references online if you are not sure what I am talking about. Anyways enjoying the videos very much and keep up the hard work!

As I watched you breaking those large sections of glass I almost cried. I'm an artist, among other things, and although I no longer do the framing of my own artwork, I know how expensive glass is from when I did. If you had let some local artists or frame shops know you were doing this, there's a good chance someone would have been over with a simple glass cutter and recycled those panes into smaller pieces. Of course, some artists want glass with IV protection, but they can't all afford the expensive stuff. Also, you could have cut those down in minutes with less of a mess if you had your own glass cutter. They're actually pretty cheap.
i feel it was a little thick for that purpose the big panes were half inch thick.
I was thinking what an amazing greenhouse you could have constructed from them. But, well, they have so much to deal with and consider right now...

My moms house was empty for 3 months with a pinhole leak in hot waterpipe in upstairs bathroom sink. The water damage was depressing. Downstairs, the water was 6 inches high on drywall b4 draining thru garage. Insurance wouldnt pay 4 unoccupied residence. I did all the dismantling and i was 55 at the time. Make sure u get rid of all critters b4 u rebuild.n dont trip n hurt urselves in a messy lumberfield.

People have probably already mentionned it, but your guys' struggles are very similar to what Laura Kampf has showed / is showing in her house renovation series, with buying an older house planning to renovate it "a little" and ending up tearing out way more than anticipated because you're all taking building and renovating and safety concerns seriouisly. It can get really difficult having to go back on the plans and adapt to the situation with every bad news, but in the long run, you'll be sooo happy to have put in the work when at the end you can be confident that your home is safe all thanks to your hard work!
Anyways, I love seing your updates every week but don't forget to take some time off to be well rested and keep your spirits high!!
