    ABOUT TIK 📝
    History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.

      I think simply calling the german generals "Incompetent" is just another side of the "madman Hitler" coin. Its always a bit more complex than that, and TIK ironic remarks are more a jab at the divine status wehraboos give to people like Manstein and Guderian than trying to imply they were actual morons

    • @88porpoise
      @88porpoise Рік тому +53

      I don't thing "incompetent" is correct.
      Manstein was not an incompetent general. The failure to reach Stalingrad was less to do with him and more to do with the Soviets making it an impossible tasl with the available resources.
      However, both were VERY good at PR after the war and making it seem like they could do anything if not impeded by Hitler.

      I highly doubt barbarrosa would have succeded even if halder didnt change the plans, the distance to the oil are just too great as we see happened irl.
      You could even make the argument that halders meddling actually helped since it allowed the red army in ukraine to be outflanked, whereas if they stuck to the original plan maybe they would have been stuck in a grinding war of attrition in ukraine that was never going to favor the germans.

    I think it honestly did not matter what the German commanders and Hitler did or said. Nothing they could possibly have done would have saved 6th Army. They often dithered and waffled over issuing a breakout order because they could see that it was always hopeless, that conditions would never be right for an attempt and that 6th Army was doomed, but they could not bear to come right out and say it.

  • @gabrieletagliaventi8431
    @gabrieletagliaventi8431 Рік тому +3

    Apart from the main consideration that the main mistake was having the II SS Panzer Korps in France and not available to stop Uranus on the November 19th, the strategic error from Manstein was not to launch a syncronized attack on December 14th: 1 from Hoth and 1 from Paulus. we know that Paulus did not have the fuel to do the entire run, however the Soviets did not know it and they could have collapsed from a simultaneous attack.

    IMHO you have created a new form of history. It's like reading a good history without the bother of interruption to refer to the map section repeatedly. Combining these things as you have is unique, and allows a grasp of the incident unprecedented in other presentations. I've read lots about Stalingrad but never understood it in this sort of depth before. Superb work.

      I have noticed a rise in this type of multi media history where we go over the explanations of operations on maps along with the narrator and absolutely love it. Other youtube channels that I have notice do this are Indy Neidell on his channel (World War Two), montemayor, Historymarche. It's probably due to a rise in computer graphics use in teaching history that we are able to get these gems.

    Thank you TIK for your dedicated commitment to this series, as soon as I got my notification of your upload I know there's so much pain and suffering in making it. It's similar to the chesse wheel run, whereby as soon as you start it's basically impossible to stop and we are the audience watching you fall tumbling down hitting your face chasing something for our entertainment but you always manage to get back up again while we cheer you on. Keep up the fantastic work brother.

  • @sorsocksfake
    @sorsocksfake Рік тому +5

    I think the problem with the two operations may be that they evolved over time as circumstances changed. Originally thunderstorm was to roll over the weak outer line like, well, a thunderstorm, and then a lightning strike to pierce the inner line and re-establish contact.
    As Manstein bogs down, he changes plans, asking Paulus to do the piercing strike and meet him halfway. Paulus says he can't go that far, and needs almost a week to prepare, at best.
    Then as Saturn becomes clear, Manstein recognzes he can't reach Paulus in this operation, and he can't wait a week while the Soviets 'get to Rostov'. So another change of plans, probably alike this:
    1) Make a line at the Myshkova, where the immobile units can rest for the next attack.
    2) Deal with Saturn
    3) Return and do another major offensive towards Stalingrad (Wintergewitter 2.0)
    4) Once close enough, pierce the encirclement as planned (Donnerschlag 2.0)
    Of course, that would never happen. The rest is hindsight memory, where Manstein got to write the histories, Hitler did everything wrong, and OKH, logistics and the intelligence services don't tend to get focused on.

    Fantastic stuff, as always TIK. The supply situation for the 6th was doomed from the start, or so it would appear. Even at 300 (short) tons a day, assuming a 50/50 split of food and fuel+ammo, they'd get only a bit over 1 lb of food per man per day (slow starvation rations for young soldiers assuming a mix of flour for bread, tinned meat, and tinned jam / butter / vegetables, in harsh weather conditions, vs the fast starvation they had) and a pretty thin ammo and fuel issue. A 55 gallon drum of gasoline is....6 lb / USG x 55 gallons + assume 50 lbs for the drum = 380 lbs, so they'd get ~ 5 1/4 drums per ton, or about 289 USG (~1094 liters) per ton. That's enough to fill up about 2 Panzer IV's per ton of flown in weight per what Wiki (yeah, yeah, yeah) says is the capacity. 50 tons a day of fuel would be ~ 14,450 USG, less than a fluid ounce per man in the pocket (at 270,000 total men encircled). A US 105mm complete artillery round is ~42 lbs (a fair approximation of what the Germans would fire for purposes of approximating supply). Assuming 90 lbs for a 2 round wooden crate that's about 44-45 complete shells per ton. 50 tons of artillery ammo would therefore be about 2250 105mm equivalents (divided up, of course, between all the various calibers - 88, 20mm, 105, 150, 37, etc). US 30-06 (an approximation for the Kraut 8mm Mauser) is ~3.2 lb / 100 rounds. So 1 ton would be about 62500 rounds, about 1 per man of combat troops in the pocket. So 50 tons of nothing but rifle caliber ammo would be about 50 rounds / man / day, give or take. Those buzzsaw MG 42's the Germans had would burn 50 rounds in about a 2-3 second burst, give or take. Even with local reserves at the start of the encirclement, there wouldn't be a lot of food, fuel or ammo to go around. Plus the Russians were forcing the 6th to burn their supplies (not only ammo and gas, but food energy from the exertions of the men) with the repeated attacks all around the perimeter. The math just doesn't appear to work out.

      great math, however, the Italians made the breakout on foot durinf Saturn, without tanks, and saved 130.000 soldiers. The 6th Army could have made it if Paulud had done a quick breackout on November 20-26, or on December 14. With almost 100 panzers, the 6th Army was way better placed than the Italian Alpini

    They came close but not quite, but realistically even if a corridor had been established would the supplies made any real difference? Would have many of Paulus's forces been able to withdraw? And at what cost in casualties to rescue them? The Soviets would have easily sealed of the corridor in my opinion. The sacrifice of the 6th Army was essential to reconstruct the Southern Front. The battle was already lost long before the rescue mission.
    Was the occupation of Stalingrad even needed at all for the German objectives?

    Well glad to see that I started binging this series the moment it restarted, as a historian, the amount of work that goes into each of these episodes is insane, the amount of books and primary sources you have to read is absolutely insane and then to turn around and then that into a wonderfully made video is doubly insane. Truly a work of art.

I was actually indifferent with your Stalingrad Saga but I’ve learned so much as well as many other buffs, scholars, and teachers. I even have a copy of Manstein’s Memoirs, Master Strategist by Lemay, and a Biography all in my office that all point to other conclusions I do not agree with. Thank you Tik.

    Firat of all very glad to see that you are following up on this excellent production - you should be very proud. Take the following as trying to add to the narrative but it is based on 30-40 year “tales” from people who are no longer with us. My grandfather fought on the eastern front between 1941-1943 in the Italian Army (3rd Cavalry Division "Principe Amedeo Duca d'Aosta"). Being half Hungarian and speaking both German and Russian my grandfather was a part of the staff unit with responsibility for coordinating with the Germans and the local society. The CSIR was attached to Panzer Group 1 under von Kleist until 1942 and later posted on the wester part of the Don front - he survived Little Saturn. With that said, one detail that you take up in the first video but not in this one is the death of Mansteins son Gero in October of ‘42. According to the “tales”, a great part of the Army Group Don where totally paralyzed for about two weeks after Geros death. Given the information present, these two weeks seem to have been decisive for Manstein reaching Paulus. Had Manstein moved two weeks the situation could have been different. Just shows how small details can have a major impact. Take it for what it is. But it seems to make sense. Once again thank you for great work!

    The one thing that I got from watching yours and Antons Stalingrad videos is a new appreciation of how good a General Paulus was. Yes he made mistakes but most were made due to bad info or just bad luck. He seemed to be very thoughtful and cared for his men. How he even got to Stalingrad was amazing given that he was always short men and equipment and the bad decisions of the OKW
