  • In this leathercraft video I make a 1911 holster with extensive laser engraving/etching. The inside is fully lined with milled veg tan. The leather is from Tandy. The laser is a Creality Falcon-2 22W

    I really love the possibilities that are endless with the laser. I do have a question though on if it dries out the leather too much. When you do an engraving like in this video does it not burn the leather then crack out when you manipulate late it later?

    • @minerblue9641
      @minerblue9641 Рік тому

      I'm not the video maker. But I'm sure you could figure out how to oil the leather to make it last about 20 years or longer. Think about it.

    • @nickbaron7462
      @nickbaron7462 Рік тому

      @@minerblue9641 yeah I’m sure there is a way. I am also into holster production and have dabbled with heat stamping. In order to get a good enough transfer it tends to burn the leather to a point that it becomes incredibly fragile. I’m just curious of how he’s keeps it from cracking out.

    • @nickbaron7462
      @nickbaron7462 Рік тому

      @@minerblue9641 also you are burning the leather not just heating it up. Burnt leather doesn’t just heal like live skin would. It is now damaged and looses its playability. I can’t imagine that even simply oiling it would bring enough life back to the burnt areas. Think about it.

      @@burkhardt7372 Thats because he is using edgekote which is more of an acrylic paint then a dye, so you can slick, burnish and seal the edges and put on a nice coat of edgekote and it will stick.

    did you just use water and a sponge to clean it after engraving?

    • @RoadAgentLeather
      @RoadAgentLeather  Рік тому +1

      yep. There will be soot built up around the etching. Especially when going this deep into the leather. I find the air assist increases this. I just use water to wipe it off. You can also run it under a faucet.

      My thoughts are that both technically and artistically, there's as much skill required to design and implement a piece like this as anything else. It's definitely not a "push-button, output leatherwork" thing ... although I may edit the videos to appear that way ;-).

      @@RoadAgentLeather While I knew it wasn't "push button", I never fully understood the amount of time it took to get a decent looking file to (in my case) print. I spent hours(!) designing a crankbait fishing lure for my 3D printer. Thankfully it worked like I wanted when I was done!
