I started leatherwork in the mid nineteen eighties because I had a bunch on nice knives with crappy sheaths. So I have been doing leatherwork for the last 27 years or so. For the last twenty-five I have been doing a lot of medieval type leatherwork although I still do modern stuff. Primarily as a hobby although I will occasionally make something for sale. I know this is long winded but it hopefully tells you I know a bit about leatherwork. I find your work top notch. You tooled the back of the sheath. (Al Shelton who made leather products for the rich and famous (such as Gene Autry) would decorate the inside of his belts because if your paying for custom work it should show.). Anyone who sees this sheath will know it was hand crafted. You hand sewed the sheath. Once again showing your interested in making the best sheath possible. And while I know and do most of what you showed I learned a bit from you about using the paints and antiquing. I know that his is a bit long winded but hopefully others less versed in the mysteries of leather will read it and be moved to subscribe and like to improve their own leatherwork

Hi Peter! Well, I'm at a loss for words. What a great compliment, thank you very much! You have about 15 years on me so I'm sure you've seen or delved into the production of many sheaths like you mentioned. I'm happy you were able to take away something from the tutorial as I tried my best to reach out to the beginner through advanced, even though I am still trying to improve my skills, and techniques myself. I believe (I assume like you), there's no room to cut corners in the search for quality, especially when trying to produce heirloom pieces like I try to do for my customers. There's been many times I've had to restart a piece due to a slip of a tool or misplaced measurement, when it would have been easy to just let it go. Speaking of medieval leatherwork, it's always something that has interested me, just haven't had a chance to indulge in this style of the craft. Once again, thank you for watching, and the great compliment!!!

This was an incredible example of expert craftsmanship. I'm 64 and am a beginning leather worker. I am retired and unfortunately have developed a tremor in my hands. This is probably the most in depth and well explained all around sheath build video on UA-cam. I was immediately blown away by your carving and tooling skills, then the airbrushing took it to another level! Right now in my very young knife making and leather crafting journey, I'm good for some mediocre pattern tooling, and that's it lol--the carving is lightyears ahead of me.
Thanks for the awesome in depth video, it will be one I reference frequently as I try to grow my leather skills.

Gorgeous work as always. Simply stunning work. A trade that's still going but also losing ground. I believe if taking an animals life that nothing goes to waste.

Thank you, Kymmberlie, I appreciate the compliment. Many of the old, handcrafted, trades are meeting challenges in today's digital society. But I believe this new generation of makers are bringing light to what many consider lost arts.

Hi. As an amateur i´m just working for the first time in my life a sheath and it is for my friend. He asked me to make a new sheath for him because the old one was broken. I principally make leather cuffs, phone cases...etc. It is almost ready. It is a " traditional " sheath. Your´s is very beautiful and i will try to make next time like yours, for my self. It is nice to watch when a professional makes something and you learn always something new.
Usually i don´t care to listen music in the background, but your music choices for this video fits like a glove. Thank you.

Wow! This is the most entertaining, educational video! Thank you SO VERY MUCH! You are a true arts and Craftsman. Thank you for the trick of the screwdriver to lift the leather. I would love to know how you made it.
The dieing of the leather and the leafs was so incredible to watch.
Again thank you for making such an awesome video.

    • @TwistedOakHandmade

Hi Yawan! Thank you for the compliment and kind words. Glad you liked the modified screw driver trick. It's really simple to make, just take any old, medium sized screw driver, and take it to a bench grinder. Grind the end off and give it a slight rounded curve, around a 45 degree angle. You want to push the screw driver into the grinder hard enough to cause a burr on the tapered end. After this take the tool to a medium grit sharpening stone to hone the edge and strop it to a polish.
