Idk… He’s good, but I don’t think he has the “it” factor. Rinella does. I don’t mean to insult the man; it’s a matter of if you have the television host presence and personality.
I really love that you guys aren't just hunting and unmaking animals, you go above and beyond and show the whole process and give the reasoning for conservation and even simple ways for people to help on their own. It's responsible and admirable. Kudos
Fish sense is what you’re after Cal. Time in the water and actually diving with good divers like these guys regularly is the key. A day spent following a good diver is worth 6 months of teaching yourself.
Cal reminds me of a friend of mine who died in Iraq in 2019. Just a real stand up guy who loves to learn and share information with people. Loved hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Irish was a funny guy who made everyone around him better and Cal just gives that same feeling.
I used to work the boy scout camp right near where you guys are fishing from 2014 to 2019. As matter of fact I even used to run one of our camp programs on the beach that you are fishing off of! All the scouts (myself included) loved snorkeling around there thanks in no small part to the efforts of these conservators. Thank you for the work you all do to preserve the magic of the west end!
@@Eric-dr5bj same here! I have a friend who dives a lot. Offshore on wrecks etc. he does really well fishing-wise too. Dont be like me and pass up the offers, take the first chance you can to do it THIS year (im finally going to)
Lucky enough to have a successful White Seabass day in my past. Still to this day, it is the best fish I've ever eaten. Might have a little bit of scarcity boost in that judgment, but it was euphorically better than the rockfish I was used to catchin, and rockfish is far from untasty. On an overcast morning, not too far offshore over a sandy bottom with kelp woods near, we sabiki'd some squid and then drifted balloons at a few different depths. Won't ever forget that spot, the magic of getting on some hungry ghosts in the open, and the gleeful hysteria of bringing some in. A truly amazing fish, a success story of recovery in my local waters, and some absolutely delicious eats that I'll never forget. Glad to see places like this working to maintain and bolster populations and give back to one of the coolest and tastiest species in the brine! Would love to dive for em someday!
I’ve always wanted to spear the kelp out there. This video has strengthened the appeal. Good to see some time and effort going into the fishery. Love the angle you take in the series Cal.
Love Cal and everything meateater, don't get it the wrong way but I learned about Cal through Rinella and I love all the shows.....keep it up!!! Love everyone in the meateater crew you guys are awesome!!!! 🙂 And I dono if im the only one but I like all the episodes before I see them cause I know they will be great 👍 👌 🙂
@@astongoddard6709 I guess you don't listen to the podcast because the dudes he was finishing with have a story of exiting the water, turning around and seeing a GW mouth agape down by the swim later. I know shark attacks are rare, so are grizzly attacks, but spearfishers and hunters are disproportionately represented in both catagories. Yt is full of videos of spearfishmen fighting sharks.
you need to try and catch one off a boat. I ts humbling also, had many wsb on my line and have never caught one after five years of fishing out off the Channel Islands just north of Catalina..
The White Sea bass release program is essentially a put and take program. These fish are released not as a way to improve wild populations but as a way to provide fishing opportunities. If this program ended the sea bass would be gone again

Overfished! It's real name is Patagonian toothfsh but that didn't sell so it was changed to Chilean Sea bass and now the fish stocks are depleted because of industrialized fishing techniques.
Cal and that mustache are famous in our household. Get this man his own series on Netflix already.

Man i worked at that place 10 years ago, helped build the tanks and outdoor enclosures. Would have loved to have been there to meet Cal the man.
Should of hid there
I'm absolutely loving this season of cal in the field so far, keep up the great work Meateater.
yes more Cal thanks meateater keep him making episodes
Loving Cal sticking with spearfishing, makes something incredibly hard look really easy
I used to fish these grounds in my mid 20's from kayak. I get all warm and fuzzy seeing cal out there

Seeing Cal in and amongst civilization is weirdly jarring.
Cal in the field is one of the best shows out there!
Yeah the local boys. Glad you got to experience that.

Nice to see you switching it up a little bit. Always new forests to walk (swim) in.
Did a lot of work on Catalina with the seabass project. Amazing operation
Hell ya. My home town!
Great episode!
Cal is the GOAT
Awesome video bro. I lived in New Jersey and we would hunt striped bass and fluke off the rock jettys. Best fish I've ever eaten
Wsb require a serious grind. Props for getting after it!

Hot tip. Try be quiet on the surface. You were scaring fish in Australia with that splashing 😂 beautiful looking diving
Nice 🤟🔥
I work at an indoor ras trout hatchery. Cool to see how a salt water hatchery runs
CAL!!!!! White sea bass are great! but your are leaving out California lobster man! when are you coming out this way for that?
Leon Raymond Hubbard Jr. He started scientology right? 😁
Thanks Cal !
JO JO IN VT 💕😄

Cal is a brave dude spearfishing in the Great White Shark waters of California, I wouldn't.
Bro they very little attack like 10 people die a year from all kinds of sharks

Dream job for fisherman
MeatEater has already got me into the mountains more but now they are going to force me to learn to dive and spearfish. Ughh
Don’t feel bad, Cal. I’ve been chasing ghosts for longer than I care to admit and still don’t have a legal to my name.

Come on bois.. you know fish ain't meat :D
It's weird, I love hunting and fishing, but have mixed feelings about Sea World.
Long Live Uncle Ted
I was born and raised on Catalina Island, Cal if you want to go fishing g or hunting on the island with some locals let me know!!
I feel attacked… sonar shamed… hahaha
Is there any chance of great white shark presence in this area during this timeframe?
Ah Kermits badass mustached cousin
it's not just point and shoot. there are a TON of nuances that takes years to learn
MORE SPEARFISHING
Mi pelon favorito
The whitefish
How much weight on that belt? (5mm suit?)
How does someone get started spearfishing?

Sea bass? Wit feaking lazers on thier heads? Are they ill tempered?

Are you packing that stache with vasoline or just tightening the hell out of that mask? Never had luck with either way personally
I was thinking the same thing.

In addition to what ogoe_joe said, they also live at depths well beyond spear fishing range

Hey Cal, how do you skin dive with all that hair on your face?

Imagine thinking that sea world’s mission is to “educate” and not profit off animal cruelty
Imagine thinking people care about your opinion.
Please never have Ted on a podcast again. He is the most preachy and self congratulating big mouth we have ever heard.
Great Ep!
