Menominee River Smallmouth with Joe Cermele and Tim Landwehr | S2E03 | Das Boat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2020
- Dos Boat crosses the Straits of Mackinaw and heads west to the Wisconsin, U.P. border. There, MeatEater's Senior Fishing Editor, Joe Cermele, teams up with local guide Tim Landwehr. First, they have to resolve some of the busted-ass, janky modifications made by the last crew. Once that’s done, they can focus on the real task at hand: burning Tim’s home river on a fishing show. See, Tim’s been keeping this place sort of quiet for the past couple of decades, trying to avoid too much pressure on his favorite river. So, why did he invite MeatEater to make an episode featuring the place and its giant, wild smallmouth? Because a proposed sulfide mine threatens the future of this fishery, and he wants you to know about it. Other topics discussed: finding big fish in skinny water, how delicious northern pike are, losing a bass but catching the “follower,” and a hell of a lot more. New episodes every Sunday at 11am MT, subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss out!

The new snarky Rinella is becoming my favorite part.
He is getting sassy in his old age.
@@Filthy_PhilDance Maybe his real personality is coming out now that his brand is doing so well?
with age comes snark
I'd say because he wouldn't be under so many requirements and guidelines that Netflix/other TV production companies have for ratings. because this is a YT show he can be more himself.
hahaha!!!!😀👍
Let's get loud and keep this river safe
Menominee: Means “Wild rice people” derived from Ojibwe language. How do I know? Because I am Menominee. 😀
Joe C & Tim Landwehr- thank you for fixing the oar lock mount and beverage holder!! Great fish!!! Tight Lines!! Koz
If Janis was a true outdoorsman, he'd have been more help! You did all you could!
good job cemele ! For all the Hookshots fans coming horns up.
I knew he looked familiar!! Used to watch a lot of Field & Stream HookShots! Loved his enthusiasm for multi-species fishing! Glad to see him on MeatEater! 👍
Okay, but why does Tim look like a put-together Joe Exotic?
i can see it lol. If Joe never got into drugs
Glad it wasn't just me thinking this
Carol Baskins!
😂😂 I thought the same thing
I kept thinking Richard Rawlings from gas monkey garage LOL
It's disappointing when someone has to reveal their favorite/secretive fishing spot due to the high risk of a company destroying it..
*You've got my support AND my respect good sirs.*
Everybody knows we cannot destroy this watershed. Now we need people to ACT on Saving the Menominee River. People can help in 3 easy ways: 1) By next week, there could be a "Take Action" button on our www.JoinTheRiverCoalition.org site. Clicking on it, and entering your demographics will send a pre-written message to the MI regulators who either approve or deny the foreign mining company's permits. You can personalize your message too, including your economic impact to the area when you're here fishing (money talks), or a story with personal impact. Instead of just the 6 of us messaging them, imagine the impact of 3,000 of us doing so! Or, 2) donate money. We have legal fees to pay. Use the www.JoinTheRiverCoalition.org site or mail checks to P.O. Box 475, Marinette,WI 54143, or 3) do both! We need all the help we can get! P.S. you don't actually have to "join" anything to be part of the solution to this massive pit of a problem! Be a hero, Saving the Menominee River can be your superpower.
I wouldn't say he revealing a secret if you google smallmouth rivers it's been a pretty well known smallie river for a while. But yes I guess it's not a super well known smallie area like lake michigan around traverse or lake st claire
Any kind of strip mine is NEVER a good thing.
Mountaintop Removal in Wv has killed all the little creeks that used to be full of native brook trout. Now you’d be hard pressed to even find a crawcrab in these creeks.
Y’all need to do what ya can to stop that mine.
Agreed, I don't care what the cause is LET CANADA BURN
Longer episodes please. You don’t have to follow the standard 22 minute outline to make this amazing show on UA-cam. These could be an hour long, I guarantee we would all watch.
Joe is great. Hookshots was one of my favorite shows/podcasts.
Thank you for bringing awareness to the issues of the proposed mine on the River! This is a major issue for all of us in NE Wisconsin.
after growing up in southwest Michigan, spending 7 years in the Yoop at Michigan Tech, and the most recent year and half now in Green Bay WI, this series has been making me so happy because it's all so familiar looking and now everyone can see how awesome the Great Lakes area is
Only the UP is Michigan everything else is flatlandervill
Careful what you wish for!
Too bad you have to drive through the entire communist state of Shitagan to get there...

Tim is a great guy, and the Menominee is an incredible River. I urge everyone to join the fight to save it!
Scenic river with beautiful, strong fish that need our protection. Let's keep up the good fight. Support the Coalition! Thanks Tim and Joe for sharing this.
Here’s the link mentioned to fight mining: jointherivercoalition.org
@jay parks you are ignorant
@jay parks XD
Thank you found it weird they want to help, but then don’t post the link
Pebble mine is making me rich. I bet if you had 11k shares of NAK you would think differently. And FYI China is trying to block pebble mine. Believe me, been invested since 2014
Steve is STILL throwing shade about the last episode.
Rinella still taking shots at the fancy pants trout guy hahaha so good! Great episode!
When I was younger I used to look down on "tree-huggers". But the older I get, the more I realize the importance of protecting the natural resources us outdoorsmen love and cherish. I really hope that mine stays an idea and doesn't become a reality.
Stoked that Joe Is part of Meateater now! The hook shots videos were great. Seems like he’s the guy when it comes to being able to get it done on the fly or conventional tackle.
I know I am late to watch this series but so far the best episode if you look to connecting 2 persons and hunt for 1 goal 💪💪🎣🎣
I could easily watch an episode of this everyday! Such a breath of fresh air over the normal sponsor hyped programs!
Steve Rinella’s narration of this second second is pure gold!! I’ve laughed pretty hard at some of his snarky play by play of what’s going on. 2nd episode was my favorite but I’ve definitely enjoyed all of them.
As a west coast Northern Californian Bass fishermen. I honestly did not realize the emphasis and gumptious attitude that the east/Midwest had on smallmouth fishing in rivers.
Over here on the west coast we have insane opportunities for Lake residing smallmouth: Almanor, Pardee, Trinity, and Shasta to just name a few.
But Almost nobody fishes the Sacramento river for the fat 3-4 lb smallies that reside in almost every bend. There is a section past "Roosters Landing" on the sac that is notorious for chunky smallies.
I need to get out on the river more.
(Story time:)
One fateful spring day on Trinity. My Father cast a Senko baby bass 5' Wacky style worm at a willow tree that was submerged off shore. He instantly got a big hit on the sink and pulled in a 6Lb Smallmouth female that was spawning near the tree and full of eggs. We boxed her for a few minutes to fish the tree for the male. He threw in the same spot after we photo'd her and put her in the aerator box. He then cast in that same spot and let it sink next to the tree and BAM. He hooked another 6lb smallmouth that was a completely different color/pattern. We assumed it was the male due to its skinny belly. It's amazing how those two smallmouth where both 6lbs and had very similar shapes and sizes but looked so different in terms of patterns and colors.
The stripes on heavy lake smallmouth are so unique to each individual fish.
Ps. those two smallmouth each took my dad 15 mins to play in. They where not joking around.
From Pa. smallmouths are by far my favorite fish to catch....
@@michaelficarro2591 If you ever make your way to the west coast I know a few lakes and patterns that are to die for!
Drop me a message anytime your in the area.
@@MorrowProduction That would be cool!!!
@@michaelficarro2591 From NJ we Love our smallies. I can't rep everyone, I go for everything. As much I like Watching the guy with tenn. Hat bass fishing. I like watching the show where they had metal boat and caught pike, catfish, trout, etc. I can't remember names.
I just moved to the Redding area . You gotta tell me more 😂😂😂
Very cool episode. What an amazing river! Definitely worth fighting for. Guide seemed like a super cool guy.
Knowing that the Meat Eater crew are ACTUAL fishermen really shows through these episodes. So much experience represented in the "talent"! #MeatEaterFishing
Between the commentary and this new Joe fella, this episode has been one of my favourites!
Awesome show 💜 Save our Menominee river it’s my home river💜
Coolest series out there, love the backstory and history of the location. Great to see that conservation gets video time in each episode. Well done fellas!
I didn’t know Joe Exotic was into bass fishing 😂🤙🏼 aweosme stuff guys!
They are definitely sipping on some old fashions around the picnic table
I am not a fisherman, but I love these episodes, each person on the show is super interesting and they always come across as genuinely nice people. Hopefully they have good luck in saving the river. Looked beautiful, and living in Scotland, like have some beautiful rivers and lochs, but the scenery was stunning.
So glad to see Joe on the Meateater team. Would kill to see more Hookshots episodes, but excited to see what Joe brings to this far more stellar crew at M.E .
On behalf of all Canadians, we are sorry for threatening this ecosystem
yeah, i was like wtf? why would we do that? haven't we fucked up our own rivers enough? why we gotta go after someone elses. if i knew the name of the company i'd call some people and see if they can be stopped.
You don't speak for anyone other than yourself.
@@mccubb1 well, YOU speak for all talking rhino sphincters.
@@Yourmomma568 ; Aquila Resources is the name of the company.
@@mccubb1 You think the Sulfide mining is something we should roll over for? Got some stake in that company?
I would love to hear a chat between Steve, Barry Hildred (CEO of Aquila) and/or Andrew Boushy (SVP; Projects of Aquila) to get into the weeds of open pit mines. The Back Forty PEA alone is 650 pages. It just isn't as simple as "open pit mines are bad." Or maybe it is that simple! Either way I'd love to hear that talk on the podcast.
99% sure you guys were drinking old fashioned's. Wisconsin's traditional Friday fish fry drink. Thank you for bringing notice to the fabulous fishing and the outside issues that threaten those resources.
Absolutely loving the upper Midwest season. Best region for fishing 😂
Love this content guys, river smallmouth on an overlooked river is going to be the focus of one of my videos this summer!
Another great episode. I am a Canadian. But... don't mess with the waters! any water. Keep up the fight
Smallmouth on the popper is easily the most fun fly fishing you can have. Excited for this one!
Joe you’re going grey! I didn’t realize how long I’d been watching you until I saw a season 1 episode of hook shots. Great content please keep it coming
Thanks for pointing that out!
Good to see JC again
This has ranked top 3 favorite channels now id like to see tint boat Nation get that bad boy
Good to have you back Joe!
Tim exotic 💯 took off the tiger print and mullet and now he's bass fishing rivers.
U r amazing
I have been bored with life since I was in my teens always playing contact sports I became an alcoholic and a smoker I have defeated alcoholism w hunting and am currently defeating smoking tru fishing thank u
Such a great concept and show! LOVE IT
The Menominee is my favorite river. I’ve been fishing it for 35 years. That river relieves me of all my stress’s. Glad you weren’t at my secret spot.
Where is ur secret spot? Why is it a secret? Tell us all where it is so we can hangout with you there.
GPS coordinates or it didn't happen

Horns always up 🤘🤘
Awesome series Steve, you're an inspiration to many
Awesome episode guys! love to see the same top notch fishing content while learning more about this problem the river is being faced with
I love these soooo much. Thanks guys.
Loved 1st season...am enjoying season #2 immensely...keep up the great work 👍
Love Tim. What a great dude. And a solid run on smallies is just hard to beat! Especially when they are monsters like these.
You should show the methods of cleaning the y bones out of pike. I love cleaning and eating northerns. MeatEater showing how to get those bones out would probably be super helpful for anglers who might not be looking it up on the smaller niche UA-cam channels. Otherwise, great episode!
Honestly the y bones in Northern and not knowing how to remove them keep a lot of the flatlanders from keeping them lol
Man I love these effin videos!
Thank you MeatEater
love this series you guys are doing, cant wait for some musky content!!!
Where’s the first lite/ save the Menominee river t-shirt? This episode blew away dos boat episode 2! Nice job
Very impressive episode, Just another goal .thanks for this exceptional video
Awesome episode, beautiful small mouth bass, really hope they get to protect the river from the sulfur mine!
I have to say to whoever reads these comments from meat eater that I've been listening to the podcast while I am at work. Listening to the podcast as brought to light several things that I wish I could see and watching the UA-cam channel here has made that wish come true as far as Das boat. Steve and the rest of the meat eater Clan keep it up love the show especially the Netflix special. However y'all need to get your rears in gear and get the other half of the Season finished LOL. Can't wait.
I look forward to this show every week! Great location Steven Rinella!
#savetheMENOMINEE
Love the show keep it up gentlemen!
Wisconsin! Yes! Awesome episode all around would love to fish with these guys! , can’t wait for the Muskies!
les gooo we got joe up in here
Love this river. Been going up to one of my family lake homes up there in the UP for 20+ years and have caught plenty of smallies and some huge pike out of the Menominee. Good to see a shot of big John’s iron mine also in the beginning.
I don't fish, I don't hunt. Not for any particular reason. But man, I LOVE the Meateater content. Makes me wanna become a Sportsman
Do it. You won't regret it.
love it, great show!
This is one of the best shows on UA-cam.
Another great episode!
Love this series
Wish I knew you were in my area lol love the show man keep up the good work ! Menominee River has great fishing all along! We need to stop the back 40 mine or our world class fishery of greenbay will parish!
Live in Maryland. Just loving these episodes..long live Dos boat.
Das boat..
Fantastic camera work. Just beautiful.
Another good video.. the music was exceptionally good on this one..
Tight lines is a great fly shop! Anybody should stop by if they get the chance.
Glad to see JC back on the tube. Good hire!
Great series!!
Cool to see someone fishing with the tiger king
Great episode!
I just moved to Menominee and just caught my first Menominee bass today! What a beauty of a fish
Beautiful and fun episode per usual! Steve, y'all should continue westbound and fish the mighty Yellowstone River in Eastern Montana. Lots of walleye, sauger, smallmouth, northern pike and other game fish.
God almighty I love this series thanks y’all
Awesome. Love to see Joe on camera again.
I grew up fishing the Menominee river and still fish it weekly today. Also grew up and live in iron mountain currently. Pumped to see you guys come and fish it.
Great job Joe. Look forward to the next episode. -JH

Save the water!
Kill the babies!
I’ve had riverfront property on the Menominee for the last 20 years. I have the best times in my life catching 5-6 pound smallness off rapalas out of that river. Town of Wagner on Wisconsin side too much fun!!!
You guys make me almost want to pick up a fly rod. Almost. Dope episode!
I’m from the Lower peninsula of Michigan and nothing would make me more sad to see yet another river get poisoned and lose a great fishery hopefully that mine doesn’t go through and we can save the smallies
Far less mid roll commercials this time. Thank you for turning them off. Great series as always.
loved the pike fishing and cooking
Haven’t fished the Menominee or it’s flowages in a few years but this makes me want to go back to smallie fish. Such a cool place.
This show encapsulates the spirit and lifestyle of fishing so well, it gives me goose bumps. Florida Sportsman produced a show called The Waterman, which was my previous favorite. This show is better.
Love it!
Smallmouth and Pike are fun to catch! I love how smallmouth jump over 2 ft in the air to try and escape!
I fish and duck hunt that damn a lot. So awesome to see the area getting this recognition
Cant wait for the Hayward one! Born and raised there!
I love that they kept the hand painted oar holders
So true about not catching pike when you want to. The other day I swapped down to perch gear and had almost given up hope, reeling super fast and being silly and an 86cm pike smashed my 7cm lure like a train 😂
So many hidden gems in WISC river systems. One of my biggest smallmouth came out of a secluded river section only accessible by surface drive motors.
