Hope you guys enjoyed this video! Derketo doesn't seem to get as much love as Yog, Ymir, Set etc, but she's one of the most intriguing gods within Conan, even if her backstory is slightly lacking in information. Enjoy! Derketo was also a name the Greek historian Ctesias used for the goddess Atargatis… the mermaid on the Starbucks logo. So make sure to put coffee bars in all your temple builds.
Derketo is my favorite divinity in Conan, I have based my character, a stygian witch, on Derketo worship. I think that Conan lore gods are really interesting and fascinating I really love their neutrality.
The gods of Conan are great, though there are plenty other gods lurking just behind the scenes that only get mentioned very briefly. I'm hoping to dig into those, alongside the more well-known gods, in future lore videos
Playing isle of siptah now I have a girl character named captain grimskull a zingaran pirate captain who is a worshipper of derketo and now discovers dark sorcery and ultimately will become a corrupted pirate sorcerer 👍love Conan lore read this and felt like writing back your awesome!
Thanks Grim, glad you enjoyed it! There's not as much to work with in terms of telling a story, but researching into gods, especially ones that are represented outside of the game, is really fun
@@Eradicati0nn lore wise derketo can pair with anyone even the uptight Mitra Still wondering about that mine I mentioned Idea what about a shrine of duality derketo + anyone else derketo and Mitra (darkness and death dualed with light and healing)
@@Eradicati0nn Lorewise, I mean. I think the idea of a divine being being in charge (or the avatar of) both life and death at the same time is a brilliant way to talk about it. Too often you have ideologies that either ignore one in favour of the other whereas I think it's far more valuable to recognise the value of both to the other.
Love this, another great video. Did you know in Age of Conan they have a good number of the gods represented along with some classes that utilize their powers.
Been waiting for some good lore videos on Conan, particularly exiles. Easy to listen to and follow yet also appreciate the effort in adding scenes from the game for visuals.
I really like these lore videos. I’ve only seen one other channel that does conan exiles lore videos and he hasn’t uploaded in ages. I’m glad you decided to do lore videos too because they are really good and it can be hard to figure this out yourself by just playing the game.
One thing i always found fascinating about Derketo, is that she is a very 'logical' deity for a culture to adopt, especially in the setting of Conan. Most deities and their incarnations come about because of, and change because of, the perceptions of the cultures that worship them. The very human need and wish to understand a grand, all-encompassing concept like 'death' and 'living' that defines a human life, just seems like a given that a deity would spring up for that. Derketo having a bunch of different incarnations and depictions depending on culture is very much what happened to many deities from classical mythology. Names change and aspects of a god may get swapped out as the cultures that adopt the deity thrive or fall, but intercultural interaction tends to preserve deities that seem 'useful' and they change over time to match the culture that adopted them. It wouldn't even surprise me if Derketo worship is primarily permitted in Stygia for political reasons, with the Stygian priesthood culturally assimilating Derketo in order to ensure control over what seems in essence like a very 'human' deity's religion. A deity like Derketo, who represents life and death would be around for a long long time in the setting, it's worship very appealing to people who are faced with as much death as in the world of Conan and the prospect of reprieve or understanding thereof. Especially if the worship of Mitra is off the table.
Great video. I just wonder, how is it with afterlife in Derketo worship (yes, as afterlife-obsessed person, I wonder about that in all cases). She is mentioned as Queen of Dead, and sometimes is said to guide deceased in moonlit sky. However, as godess of earthly pleasures, and (as you mentioned) compared to some branches of modern day satanism (most probably LaVey branch), who don't focus much on afterlife (or in case of LaVey, outright deny it), I wonder if her worshipers have simmilar view of afterlife as well...
I'd lean more towards the belief in some form of afterlife, likely one of total freedom, given how heavily she leans towards the removal of all inhibitions
@@Eradicati0nn Aye, that reasoning is sound. Too bad that in game, Derketo religion is probably most lacking in what to offer (not counting Crom, for obvious reasons) - no decorative statue, only one weapon etc. Too bad, because from the lore side, this religion is totally killing it xD
Glad you enjoyed it! I have some other lore videos already uploaded and one coming on the 18th. I do endeavour to cover all the gods though, including smaller ones like Dagon, Hanuman, Jhil etc
my favorite goddess. lol. that aside, i like your conan exiles lore videos, but the audio sounds too low and muted, as if you're whispering to yourself. is this intentional? coz i have to use youtube's closed caption sometimes just to figure out what you were saying (and CC often gets non-common english words wrong)
I can indeed! I'd like to do all the gods ideally, it's just getting around to them 😂 Age of War looks to be fairly light on lore compared to the Age of Sorcery, so I'm hoping to get a few lore videos done covering subjects in the wider world
Glad you're enjoying them! Best way to get in contact is either to shoot me an email, which you can find in my "About" section, or to join my Discord and DM me through there
Zath is on my list of gods, though being a newer one he's gonna require a bit more research. I basically know nothing about him aside from "spider go brrrr"
Hel may be an influence. So may be Freyja ... she is the goddess of fertility and cats. But so may be many others. Humanity's history with religion is a long and winded one.

I didn't know that, thanks for dropping that tidbit! I'll definitely have to throw some coffee into my next temple 😂
Sex, death, and coffee. Who can't get behind a goddess like that?

I love your smaller gods videos. These are always so well done and cinematic.
Thanks Grim, glad you enjoyed it! There's not as much to work with in terms of telling a story, but researching into gods, especially ones that are represented outside of the game, is really fun
As a chosen of yog I always have her alter facing my shrine of yog but personally I like the black trimmed in bronze and I'm a cat person
Yeah the black and metal trims are very nice, her T3 altar fits really nicely with Stormglass & Turanian too
@@Eradicati0nn lore wise derketo can pair with anyone even the uptight Mitra
Still wondering about that mine I mentioned
Idea what about a shrine of duality derketo + anyone else derketo and Mitra (darkness and death dualed with light and healing)
I always see the option to worship her, but never really looked into it. Thanks for pushing me to research further. 😁
Glad you liked the video! She's pretty interesting for sure, fairly under-represented but definitely a really interesting goddess
Derketo is my fav.
I wouldn't say she's my favourite, but she's definitely climbed up that list after looking into her more

I love Derketo, mainly because she seems very similar to Hel

Thanks Doherty! I've got quite a few more already uploaded, and more planned in the future too

my favourite god, aesthetically for building anyway.
She reminds me very much of Isis who became popular even in Rome (of course she was Romanized). This time she chose the other brother haha.
Cool video, thanks :)
Oh this was awesome ! Thank you I love the gods and religion lore of hyperborean age
Glad you enjoyed it! I have some other lore videos already uploaded and one coming on the 18th. I do endeavour to cover all the gods though, including smaller ones like Dagon, Hanuman, Jhil etc
Getting really excited for the next God lore
Follow of Mitra and I frown upon Derketo’s…. life choices.

Vídeo maravilhoso!!!😊
Now Derketo is used by Conan players to ERP.
Can you please do one on Zath 🙂
Zath is on my list of gods, though being a newer one he's gonna require a bit more research. I basically know nothing about him aside from "spider go brrrr"
will you do one for Zath ?
Zath is on the list, though the god ones are a little harder to weave a good story with. He is definitely planned though
I like her, she's unique... a cult for the outsiders.
SHES HEL FROM NORS MYTHOLIGY
Hel may be an influence. So may be Freyja ... she is the goddess of fertility and cats.
But so may be many others. Humanity's history with religion is a long and winded one.
I will video about crom
