    As a native spanish-speaker, I can say Zevran's and Josie's accents are similar to that of Spain. So, I guess, Antivan's words are from Spain and not Latin American's spanish.

      I agree, the cultural flavour of Antiva speak to me of late middle age Spain, the age of the Spanish Armada and the Conquistadores. This would also support the pure but flirtacious nature, Spain was high Catholic, but it was common for upper class women to wear low cut dresses, as the brests were less sexualised than the lower body.

      We’re definitely going to Tevinter in DA4 but I’d also like to see Antiva, Par Vollen, Seheron and Rivain in DA4 and maybe if DA4 does well enough and Dragon Age is still a thing in a few years, we could go to Nevarra in DA5, maybe even the Anderfels.

    There's a bit of extra flavor you might've included--if you play as a human noble in Origins, you get to meet another Antivan, Fergus's wife, Oriana (who has no accent, but if she's been living in Ferelden for long, that could make sense). If you're a female, she comments on how it's unthinkable for a woman in Antiva to wield weapons, Fergus points out Antivan woman are supposed to be dangerous, and Oriana claims it's because of words and poison. Of course, considering in that same game Zevran mentions his female assassin friend, this is a bit wonky, but maybe that's just the different outlooks between the nobility and the commoners.

    • @mickey1592
      @mickey1592 6 років тому +12

      I’m pretty sure Zev also mentions the female assassins using slow acting poisons, and referring to some of his own tactics as feminine. Though this might be wrong, it’s been a while.

      You can be an assassin without using a blade. In Japan spies n female assasins would either bed you then kill you while you slept or would poison you.

    It reminds me a bit of Sicily/Venice during the Italian states period. It's nice to see more of Italy's history represented in fantasy outside of Rome!

    Antiva is definitely Spain, I love looking at the comparison of the countries of Thedas and their inspirations in our world.

  • @alexartemisia

    I also think that there's a massive crossover between the Spanish and Italian, because Zev, and Josie sound Spanish, but Feynriel's father (from DA2) sounds more Italian. So maybe the accent differs depending upon where in the country you are?

    • @xinzod4
      @xinzod4 6 років тому +12

      Hi! I'm from Spain and when I was playing the second game, I felt really happy because Vicento, Feynriel's father, said "maldición" which is a spanish word! So, maybe Antiva have both accents!

    An interesting fun fact: the festival of satinalia has a real life counter part. The ancient romans celebrated a festival called saturnalia , it also featured wild revelry and was around christmas. it was dedicated to the roman god of agriculture,saturn. It seems there is quite a bit of italian influence in antiva.

  • @glennabuckley7106

    The last queen of Antiva was Queen Asha Subira Bahadur Campana, the "Queen Mother of Thedas". Every ruler of Antiva since her death, whether male or female, has carried the title of King.
    I'm not sure if this fact is due to the reverence that Antivans --and by extension, Thedas-- have for her... or if it's because the title of Queen of Antiva is considered cursed after Asha's body was found with four steel swords run through her.

    A bit late to the game, and not sure if you mentioned her- but Orianna, the Cousland's sister-in-law is Antivan. She mentions something about how women fighting in Antiva is unheard of when you play as the female cousland. Just thought it was interesting, and added to your point!

    I think one of the developers said that Antiva is based on an Italian city-state during the Renaissance. Specifically Venice. Nevarra is Spanish influenced.

    I feel the need to thank you for all the lore you have on your channel as well as codec entries. I don't have much time as I like to play videos games so I tend to ignore reading in game. But I love all the lore and play these games for the story. I usually listen to your videos in the car or on my lunch breaks at work. I love your channel.

    In Inquisition, Dorian and Vivienne discuss on how dissimilar they are and how they don't get along, but they admit that they should be happy that at least they're not Antivan. Does that suggest that the other nations look at antiva as "quaint" or would that be orlais and Tevinter specifically that look at antiva unfavorably?

  • @alynnkiv271
    @alynnkiv271 4 роки тому +4

    After reading Tevinter Nights I concluded that Antiva is more of an Italy, and the language is definitely italian, the Crows use many italian words and phrases in the short stories (even though it does sound more spanish in the games).
    Also, Maker's breath, how much I want to go there!

    So... Fantasy Spain-Italy ... got it. (Rialto, for example, is a real place in Venice, and may Antivan places have italian names. But there is also a heavy Spanish influence.)

  • @j.bat.8235

    A bit out of left field, but the history of the nation of Antiva somewhat mimics pre-unity Italy, with bits and pieces being basically... Well, "passed along" among greater powers.
    That and the a few bits of language, and fact that Treviso is a legit city in current-day Italy (and Rialto is the name of a bridge in Venice) somewhat reinforces the core theme.
    Also, "Felicissima" as in "Felicissima armada" is either italian or spanish for "happiest"

    It seems fair to assume that if Antiva was under Qunari rule for a century, it would have left some mark on them religiously. Either they would have a larger amount of people with a positive attitude towards the Qun than other nations, or they would have developed an even stronger dislike towards the Qun than most of the other nations due to the occupation. Or a mix of both. Just speculation of course ^^

    I'm not an expert, but I'm from Spain, and I think that Zevran and Josephine have a more Italian accent (or at least it doesn't strike me as a Spanish accent I know of). But in DA:II Castillon, Velasco and Vincento are voiced by two Spanish voice actors (Óscar Castellanos and Héctor Garay), which for me is very rare to hear their voices in English, because I've only heard them in Spanish dubs of movies, TV shows or videogames (by the way, none of the BioWare games have been dubbed in Spanish that I know of) and I think I haven't heard of a Spanish voice actor lending his voice in that way

    Ghil Dirthalen - in a nutshell , Antiva = Colonial Caribbean. take the similarities even with the pirates.
    and that is not the accent from Spain at all. they might roll the R's. but that is not from Spain lol
    trying to differentiate Spanish by accents is really hard. even trying to say Mexican accent is hard. accent in Mexico change by region, state and in some cities by neighborhood.
    there are areas that actually have an accent closer to Spain and others that changed so much that is almost sounds like a new language lol
