That’s not really true. Elective monarchy was not that rare, with the Holy Roman Empire and Poland-Lithuania as examples. The idea that kings ruled absolutely was never true; while a king would have a personal demense, most of the taxes and troops he could call upon were from vassals. An unpopular king that ignored his vassal’s wishes could find his head and his body going in different directions, as often happened.
Hell a lot of south east Asian cultures had something similar not immune to corruption or tyranny but generally the masses who produced the food and produce etc generally did have power in the court of kings and emperors and spread that power through represtatives
You know, I'd love it if someone would tackle Chateau D'Onterre in DA:I. That whole situation of what actually happened there is so mysterious! We can already tell the basic thing is that a girl mage was never sent to the Circle and ended up becoming an abomination, but looking at all the evidence and the journal scraps.... Something really specifically messed up happened there. There were so many parties and maybe all the corpses came from the guests? I know for SURE we fight the girl as an Arcane Horror for the main boss fight.
lumpyspacecadet Did it say it was a girl? I always pictured a boy for some reason. But there is a journal entry just outside near a cliff suggesting a girl refuged in the chateau, who had a troubling backstory. Her journal implies that a desire demon, I think, toyed with her and her sibling until it decided to kill them off, all the while convincing her it was their mother. IMO it was more fucked up than the chateau's haunted origin.
Definitely the creepiest place in the whole game. One of the best side quests in the series imo. You have this beautiful, lush, green forest outside that is one of the most peaceful zones in the game and then you enter this estate that immediately puts you on edge and makes you feel uncomfortable. I loved the contrast between the pleasant and the macabre.
I took from the journals that the place saw many parties but on one specific party the girl, or the demon that took over her, killed all the guests. That's why there are the corpses, and the girl herself killed the noble family that owned the Chateau. And I remember one note telling something really f*cked up about the father from the family invinting the girl to his room, but idk...
Specifically Denerim & Amaranthine are cited as being cities while Alamar · Gwaren · Harper's Ford · Highever · Redcliffe are listed as being towns. (ie City>town>village)
Just to make clear, the difference between a bann and an arl was that a bann held a tract of land (similar to real world counts, where the unit of governance called a county is from) with serfs working on it, whereas arls held little actual land, but strategically important or large cities or towns. They were technically equivalent in rank, but the arl would command greater men and money, thus, prestige.
I agree with lumpy space cadet please can we examine this story in chateau Ont. I fought through this chateau several times and find it creepy. Speaking about creepy the orphanage in the alienage in Dao deserves a to be examined as well.
Antiva, if you haven't started another one already. Btw, I love seeing how everyone wants a different nation :D Just goes to show how well-developed the world of Thedas is, to have each of its factions prompt so much curiosity.
super old video but i didn't see anyone else comment this: the word you're looking for is 'demonym'. ferelden is the country, fereldan is the demonym :)
At the start of Inquisition the noble bothering Lady Josephine claim that Haven is now "the rightful lands" of his house (by marriage). Does that mean that Orlais want the whole Frostbacks or just the town/city where Andrastes ahses where hidden?
Have you done a video on lands beyond thedas yet? Including Par Vollen but also maybe reasons why there are uncharted territories, codes/hints/easter eggs about exploring different lands in the future? I know there may not be a lot of material to work with but your speculation and theories would also be cool !
I prefer the imperium myself and we havn't even been there yet. I am super excited for da4 since I here it will likely be in tevinter. Hopefully well visit kal shorak as well
Always good to see a vid about our pupper loving Fereldans X3 BTW I noticed there's a nation missing from the Nations playlist: The Tevinter Imperium. I know you have a lot going on with expecting a new baby on the way (I just had one myself in November LOL) but when you get the chance to pick this back up, do you think we'll be graced by a video of Dorian's homeland?
When first meeting Abelas at Mythals temple he states that we have disturbed their slumber and everytime they awaken they find the world more foreign then the last time they awoke. My question is what is this "slumber" he speaks of? I know Solas has just awoken from his a year prior to the game as well but what is it exactly? A magical slumber/hybernation that somehow preserves the body? Is this explained somewhere? Is there a video on it?
No video on it yet- but we do know a bit on it! Very quickly: it's called Uthenera. Because elves did not die or age, when they became 'tired of life' they would enter an endless sleep to wander the fade. The DA wiki page has good information on it if you can't wait for a video :D
Ghil Dirthalen I remember reading about that in origins when you're hunting the werewolves in the temple but I thought that that sleep was a permanent one where the body slowly wasted away? If that's the case how is it Abelas and Solas, especially Solas, didn't have their body rot in the time they were asleep dreaming in the fade?
Bioware Geek Elves in Uthenera were tended to by servants, sustaining their bodies with concoctions of herbs, water and honey (basically elven tea), though there were some elves that could sustain themselves through the Fade, and didn't need to be tended to.
Always preferred ferelden to orlais. They may not have fancy clothing and fine dining but they are more honourable than the orlesians and the imperium and they are all about getting the job done. They have the dwarves from orzammar directly below the frostback mountains which are a subject on their own, the best characters in the series are fereldan, the best zone in DAI is crestwood which is in ferelden, meanwhile the worst zone is either the large, empty hissing wastes or the 3D puzzle that is the forbidden oasis (both of which are in orlais). I'm also of the firm belief that ferelden would be on par with or even greater than orlais when it comes to military might if not for the fifth blight. I know DA4 will take us to tevinter but i hope that we still get to see ferelden in future titles. It's where the series began and is, in my opinion, the heart and soul of thedas.
It is just like orlais is based on france back when they held the papacy, the free marches are grmanic with a dash eastern european city state thrown in, and antiva is overall very italian. Tevinter is an obvious roman analogue, with ancient tevinter being basically ancient rome
No king but the King in Ferelden, whose name is Theirin.
No King but Alistar who is harden.
Ferelden is a proper noun and Fereldan is an adjective.
I have to say, I quite like Ferelden's political system and how it flips feudalism on its head.
Same, I also love how orlais is confused about it since their ruler has absolute power

You did the dog lords proud
I honestly can't wait for the next DA game just for this channel to blow up in followers
If its not done,Tevinter,i want to know all about those vinty vints before going to vintland
Idk why but the tone you used when you said cheese was just so funny to me
"stews, pies, anything with turnips, ale, and of course ᶜʰᵉᵉˢᵉ"
“Redcliffe village is one of the larger cities.” Gwaren, Highever, Jader and Amaranthine exist.
I think Jader is Orlesian.

eva magnusson YES THE ORPHANAGE I just played through that actually and was so fuckin scared
I miss Dragon Age.
"Culture [slight pause] Religion."
Orlais seems the appropriate next choice, considering the ties between each nation, and also that the two are the most powerful nations in Thedas.
Good video, as always. I guess you can go with Tevinter, or Antiva (that evil place full of Antivans)
I'm working on a fan fiction piece, and this information is very useful. Thanks! I'm looking forward to new videos.
Redcliffe has a population of 200.
Antiva, if you haven't started another one already.
Btw, I love seeing how everyone wants a different nation :D Just goes to show how well-developed the world of Thedas is, to have each of its factions prompt so much curiosity.
Next country should be antiva. Lots of good lore there.
Id love a video on the nation of rivain!
super old video but i didn't see anyone else comment this: the word you're looking for is 'demonym'. ferelden is the country, fereldan is the demonym :)

Maybe the Free Marches or the Anderfels next!
I prefer the imperium myself and we havn't even been there yet. I am super excited for da4 since I here it will likely be in tevinter. Hopefully well visit kal shorak as well
You forgot the relationship between ferelden and the other nations
Always good to see a vid about our pupper loving Fereldans X3
BTW I noticed there's a nation missing from the Nations playlist: The Tevinter Imperium. How about a video about animals in Dragon Age? Sounds fun
You should do overview/lore of the books and comics
Not bad for a shemlen :)
I trying to learn as much as I can for an immersive experience on D.A.I
Can we have this as a sticky on the DA subreddit so people will get the damn spelling right?
fereldan is an adjective
When first meeting Abelas at Mythals temple he states that we have disturbed their slumber and everytime they awaken they find the world more foreign then the last time they awoke. My question is what is this "slumber" he speaks of? I know Solas has just awoken from his a year prior to the game as well but what is it exactly? Bioware Geek
Elves in Uthenera were tended to by servants, sustaining their bodies with concoctions of herbs, water and honey (basically elven tea), though there were some elves that could sustain themselves through the Fade, and didn't need to be tended to.
So the Fereldan noble system is a bit similar to the British Nobility System. Teryn=Duke, Arl=Earl and Bann=Baron.
Rivain or the Anderfells.
Because teventer imperium seems to be where the next game is based or implied to be based in can you do a video on teventer
Rivain or maybe Antiva.
Haha, I thought Ferelden and Fereldan were obvious but I guess not. ;)
Nevarra next
Always preferred ferelden to orlais. They may not have fancy clothing and fine dining but they are more honourable than the orlesians and the imperium and they are all about getting the job done. Antiva or Anderfels.
Would rather live in Rivain
How can maric be lost in sea when we all saw him die in the game
I think you confuse Cailan and Maric
so Ferelden is Anglo-Gaelic
Nice Video, but why did you put Elder scrolls online as game you were talking about and not DA:O? lol
I didn't- youtube sets it automatically sometimes and doesn't tell me :/
@@GhilDirthalen yeah, youtube be dumb like that...
The kingdom of Ferelden: No slavery or serfdom, no work without pay. And dogs are the best. Simple as.
Hold up. You said king Marric was lost at sea? So he's definitely not dead right?
0:30 Inhabitant?
WHOOOO! FERELDEN!
I believe Ferelden is loosely based on ancient Britannia
It is just like orlais is based on france back when they held the papacy, the free marches are grmanic with a dash eastern european city state thrown in, and antiva is overall very italian. Tevinter is an obvious roman analogue, with ancient tevinter being basically ancient rome
Ferelden is technically Britain.
Ferelden is best nation
I get vibes from Finnish culture here 🤔
Might be wrong though
Ferelden = Noun & Fereldan = adjective or object pronoun. 😁
"and that's for another video.." BITCH WHERE 👏 ARE THOSE VIDS GODDAMN XDD
Antiva or Rivain next please
