I love the way Geoff gives each of the Dwarves their own voice and vocal range. He also gives them an individual personality. Like how the youngest (?) hestitates and swallows as if his mouth is dry with nerves.
i see the dwarves as Geoff, Bofur (could be Balin), Fili or Kili, and Thorin.
As a pallet cleanser, how about reacting to his Way Down. It’s a lot of fun, and he goes ‘way down’ for the last note.

Yes Geoff will often linger on an N or M at the end of a word rather than extend the preceding vowel. i don't know if there is a term for that but you hear it lot with Geoff. People often mention his vocal control and it's not surprising as he's been a human bass guitar for man years with VoicePlay and he is brilliant at that. I love his piano accompaniment in this too. And in any other he does. Geoff still won't call himself a bass singer. He claims to be a baritone with a bass range. But of course he has a tenor range too. His full range is now from A0 to A#5 but we don't normally hear both extremes at one time. He's been working on the bass range for many years now. One of my favourites of his is Shenandoah. I just find it so beautiful, visually as well as musically.
Loved the commentary. It is good to hear other base singers react to Geoff. As listeners we love his voice, but you explain why and how it sounds so good. Thank you.

This is such a treat, and hearing a trained musician, and a bass at that, really enhances the reaction the analysis.
At some point in time you might want to go into his minis that are about a minute or so long. An interesting combination might be from the Disney Jungle Book soundtrack.
One of his favorites from the movie is Baloo’s Bare Necessities. It’s one of his first videos and pretty simple especially compared to these days. He was just starting out his solo career so not as complex as this but a lot of fun.
Then VoicePlay did a mini of vultures song That’s What Friends are For, featuring Jose Rosario who was in Hoist the Colours.
Recently he covered a mini of my favorite song which was from the snake Kaa, Trust in Me. It’s in the low breathy lion purr tone the whole time through. It would be hard not to trust in him. It’s extremely seductive. The three together might make a fun departure when you get bored doing just one song at a time!
I really enjoy your reactions as well as the analysis. He is by far my favorite solo singer and I love to watch someone truly appreciate him as we do.
One of my favourite parts of this arrangement is the "snare", which is actually two shovels... one in mud, one in sand. And the last sound is a gate, if memory serves correctly.
Thank you for a wonderful reaction! This is way up there as one of Geoff's best. I appreciate your pointing out just how incredibly smooth his lines are. I do wonder whether that is something opera singers aim for or particularly notice? The only other reactor I've seen who often mentions Geoff's 'smoothness' is also an opera singer (Peter Barber), so it does make me wonder about that. I enjoyed your explaining how the way he voices the vowels and consonants emphasizes that smooth line.
And it is just great watching how much enjoyment you get out of Geoff's voice.
I can only speak from my own experience. When training, my mentors and coaches would often speak on "choppy" vs. legato (smooth) phrasing within cadences. There are multiple important reasons as to why they emphasized this but succinctly, it creates a more audibly pleasing experience that, while not many may inherently notice, adds much texture and an overall more pleasurable listening experience to the listener, regardless if they hear those intricacies. I think it is safe to assume that the majority of us can agree that Geoff's voice has a "smooth" textural quality that makes his style of singing intoxicating for his listeners, both due to its rarity but also how expertly he understands his voice's limitations and works within the parameters of his knowledge and experience. That's why it's important to not call anyone "perfect" or "the best there ever was." Subconsciously, it can cause an artist to no longer have the drive to keep expanding their own limitations and bounds, and, in some cases, make them more negatively sensitive to receiving criticism (whether it be emotionally charged and unfair or legitimately constructive). Unfortunately, I've seen it happen to colleagues of mine who were incredible musicians and had a bright future only to have it taken away because their feedback loop of success became so consistent, overwhelming, and unearned at points, that they got lost in it and ultimately they never recovered. This is why people like Geoff focus on consistent improvement and perform their art for the love of it and wish to share it with others, he doesn't get lost in his popularity and creates music that can focus on these legato/ smooth phrases in a way that only can be described as masterly executed through years of growth, practice, development, and training.
@@goodeveningstories Geoff's texture can also change depending on the song. He seems to set out to use what he thinks works best for the song. I especially enjoy his very 'rounded' sounds, which I understand is apparently caused by a very open back of the mouth. It is beautifully realized especially in VoicePlay's cover of "Hellfire". But then we also get songs where he utilizes a more nasal sound, especially when he is imitating the 'buzz' of an electric bass or guitar, such as in their most recent cover "Black Hole Sun" (altho' that one probably is amplified with post production distortion) or when they covered "Seven Nation Army"
And in his solo covers, we sometimes get the same note performed in multiple ways in the same song - a low chest note that is then repeated as a subharmonic or even a fry. To get several different sounds out of the same note. Especially when he is portraying more than 1 Geoff.
Don’t forget he is with Voiceplay also. Many great songs to pick from. The two that showcase him r the oogie boogie’s song and hellfire. Enjoy to acapella fun

I've watched a lot of reactors and you're by far one of my favorites. You're just so happy when reacting, and your analysis perfectly walks the line of "this is just enough to give me insight that I don't have as a non-singer"

I love the technical aspects you address in your reactions especially being a visual artist myself. Almost everything Geoff does is magnificent. Try “Sound of Silence, Ain’t no sunshine, Shenandoah he did for his wife Cathy. You must react to Voiceplay’s Dragonborn Comes. It is a Geoff arrangement and it is beautiful. The singing, set, etc is just gorgeous in a different way than hoist the Colors. You have just begun your descent into the rabbit hole that in Geoff and Voiceplay.

This is the second time he has gotten the same dwarfs together for a song from the Hobbit movies. Waiting to see if he does a song from the third movie.

If you'd like to expand and see another acapella group and an outstanding example of unison, you should look at Home Free and their cover of Crosby, Stills and Nash's, Helplessly Hoping. The studio version is great. There's a live performance on UA-cam too, at a Fair. The audio isn't as good, but it shows it's not just good studio work bringing the tracks together. They perform live everything they do in the studio. VoicePlay can say the same. They'll use studio techniques on official releases, but nothing to the point they can't sing it live.
There's a connection between them and VoicePlay. They were on the NBC Show, The Sing-Off several years back and became good friends as groups. Home Free won the season. Geoff hadn't fully moved into his full bass range at that time. His connection with Tim Faust, the bass for Home Free (with a 5-octave + range) ended up being a learning experience and Geoff expanded his range into the realms demonstrated in this video.
Geoff has arranged for Home Free. He did the arrangement on a collaboration where Home Free performed with the Oak Ridge Boys and their classic, Elvira. Home Free has a lot of country influence, but their repertoire goes outside that as well. Tim Faust is in the same league as Geoff Castalucci. Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix and an operatically trained Bass Profundo, has done collaborative work too with both groups.

As much as I love Voiceplay and Geoff Castelucci. I would like to recommend another independent artist Dan Vasc My mother told me, Amazing Grace, My Heart will go on.
He is only 2,000 away from a million subscribers which is his goal.
Dan Vasc has a chameleon voice and is incredible including his opera singing.
