  • Israel video tour with David Hyman, professional tour guide. Herodion is also known as Herodium went through major renovations in recent years and is finally open for a complete visit which includes all the new excavations and gems that were recently discovered. Herodion is very close to Jerusalem, but the road crosses sections of the West Bank, so it's advised to drive there with someone who knows the way. Herodion was one of King Herod's desert palaces, which he built in the wilderness for his safety and comfort. The building techniques and the materials he used were from the highest quality of his day. King Herod chose the site as his final resting place and transformed the mountain into a mausoleum. To do this he covered the hill with earth and build a 25-meter high monument where his stone coffin was placed. In 2007 Professor Ehud Netzer from the Hebrew University unearthed the remains of the royal tomb and his team designed a model of the mausoleum at the site. Another amazing find was the private theater on the side of the mountain, and the decorated chamber right above it, We will enter the palace via the original passage up the royal staircase and tour the palace amenities: The Bathhouse, the garden, and the synagogue. We end our visit with a tour of the underground caves and passages, carved by the Judean rebels in the belly of the mountain, during their battles of the Great Revolt against the Roman, in the Years 67-70 BC

You are an outstanding guide. My wife and I visited Herodion. I learned more from your video than I did when I visited the site. Very best wishes.

Haha The sheep at the end was sure panic stricken. Was it separated from its lamb?
I had heard of Herodian, but you are the first to take me there.
I have never seen white limestone before. It's beautiful.
I'm so happy you are also an archaeologist.
I empathize with your loss of Netzer. I lost my professor, Dr. Grace Hamilton, who lead me to love history.
Thanks for another great tour, David.

Fantastic tour, David! I can't believe how much work has been done since I watched stories of the discovery of Herod's "sarcophagus." I'm stunned at how much of the site has been excavated and restored in so little time! 😲
It's sad to hear that Professor Ehud Netzer has passed away. He's the man whose interview's I was lucky enough to catch on tv that taught me about the amazing building projects of Herod. Professor Netzer was a once in a lifetime gift to historians and us regular archaeologist wannabes.....
Again, thank you for yet another great tour!
p.s. I loved seeing the beautiful young shepherd boy and his flock, too! That was really special 👍✌🏽

I absolutely love and whole-heartedly appreciate your channel and its outstanding content. As a 56-year-old Jewish American who plans on visiting Israel next year, your videos have helped tremendously in the planning of my itinerary. Your superior knowledge and salient expertise are unmatched. Since I was a very young and inquisitive schoolboy, ancient Jewish history, classical Greek and Roman history and literature, and archaeology (especially that of the Levant) have all been insatiable passions of mine. And it remains the case now.
Please keep up the phenomenal work. My only wish is that your videos were much longer, lol. Thank you, Professor David Hyman, and your wife, Mrs. Shiri, for all that you bring to us and UA-cam. Shalom and my very best and warmest regards to you both from North Carolina, USA. 🤝🤝

Amazing David! I've read so much about King Herod and the Jewish Revolts and you taking us on this tour was delightful. I lived in Israel and never had the opportunity to visit Herod's Tomb. When I visit again in the new year, I will make this a priority. Thank you for all your great video tours in Israel.

    1. This is the best video I have seen about Herodion!
    2. Were the workers you filmed excavating or restoring?
    3. The footage of Herod’s tomb was fantastic and the first I have seen of the tomb.
    4. The tunnels under the mountain were amazing and, again, first I have seen. I admire the men, women and children who used them in their wars against Rome. I had not heard about Herodion being used in the rebellions, like the more famous Masada and Cave of Letters.
    5. I now know why we get along so well, both have backgrounds in archaeology.
    6. Thank you for the breadth and, literal, depth of this video!

Wow Richard, my ears are on fire. Your feedback and insights are very much appreciated. The workers are restorers, they are actually students that are employed via "project 500" aimed to provide employment to those who were dismissed due to Covid. Thanks for watching and take care

Maybe Herod has visited Palestine but it is a speculation

    • @IsraelwithDavidHyman

The name Palestine was only invented 150 years after Herod dies, by Emperor Hadrian 132 CE.
