    Germania Magna was wild and barbaric. With no paved roads, or large cities, the Romans would never have guessed this untamed land was the home of the tribes that would one day lead to her downfall.
    But how did Germania Magna come to associate with Rome in the first place, and what events sparked the invasions of her tribes passed the frontiers? Join us now in the first chapter of the Germany series reboot to find out.

    At some point it occured to me that Germanic peoples are the great colonizers of the world. They were pretty much everywhere in Europe at some point, Northern US and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the whole British Empire, and even the first men on the Moon were German Americans.
    The only other people who got around that much are the Asian steppe peoples, but they weren't really that much in settling.

      @@vadokunvot It didn't really. Austria was celtic and even had some great celtic kingdoms like Noricum. Almost all of Austria was part of the roman empire and no large german tribes really settled in Austria after it's fall. For centuries Austria was now victim of invaders from the east like the slavs,the Awars or the magyars. Only when Bavaria and the Franks started to conquer this land was germaniced. I found this very informative. I was starting to memorize most of these details and your video really clarified everything. I wasn't aware that the Celts originally dominated central Europe and that the Germanic tribes and the Goths started so far up north. A hypothesis I am playing around with is that the Bronze Age collapse and the fall of Rome were caused by global cooling, which in the case of Rome, forced a mass migration into Roman territory and in the Bronze Age collapse, the raids of the Sea Peoples (I'm sure something similar to what we saw in this video happened to the Mycenaeans, Hittites, and Egyptians). The little ice age around the mid 1300s brought about the plague and the 100 years war and by the end of the little ice age in the mid 1800s, Europeans had already spread all over the world, settling in the Americas and Australia and building huge empires. I keep telling people that in 20-30 years with climate change, we'll be doing a mass migration like this again, with people moving northward and away from the coasts.

    Hello from Poland my dear German friends! You know, that country east to yours. I have a question - I know that Nordic had their own religion (Norse) that we all know and love, but did these lower germanic tribes (Burgundians, Saxons, Franks etc.) have their own religion as well? If yes, was it universal for all of the tribes "under" the Jutland Peninsula, or each tribe had its own variant? Reply quickly and simple :D

      Let me explain. Thanks to Karl der Große, or Charlemagne everyone went christian. And after 1000 years it's hard to find evidence. Even for Scandinavia. Most what we know for the germanic beliefs comes from Iceland. But yes many germanic tribes believed in Odin. The brothers Grimm who made you know the well known German fairy tails known to the world traveled across Germany. Finding similar tales only with some differences. To you question. Yes some germanic tribes did believed in Odin. Because across whole Germany there are names for him. Wutan is the german name. (Anger). And Donar is Thor for example ( thunder). Most importantly is the Nibelungen lied. A tale of an germanic warrior who slayed a dragon. It's written in old high German. And we'll known today

    • @TheCerbari
      @TheCerbari 5 років тому +23

      Its believed that the story of odin and thor developed later when the german Tribes already were in Todays Germany, and later spread to skandinavia. The reason we call it norse mythology is mainly because After Mainland germany was converted to Christianity in skandinavia they still told the Stories of odin etc.
      Of course there were other Legends etc but odin/woden/wotan etc was the most important religious figure through all germanic Tribes from Todays south germany to norway.

    I love the fact that you remade this video, going over Germania instead of Germany, because it's much easier to find a source of information for the Holy Romans and onward, but not as many people are interested in Germania. Your choice of music coupled with your skill at editing made the video covering my ancient ancestors very pleasant to watch. Much love from an ethnic German Wisconsinite!
    P.S. 6:02 I think you meant to say 410 instead of 455
