Venice & Genoa were the two most powerful of the Italian Maritime Republics or Repubbliche Marinare. But why?
Find out in this episode how the Maritime Republics came to be, and why they are so important to understanding the overall History of Italy in this final chapter of the Italy series.

Ok
Please,Suibhne do history of Romania. I cannot wait for your decision to make it or not. Just make the video already,i can'T WAIT LONGER. :((((
Pls history of Serbia
Kosovo is Serbia
I'm sorry but you misspelled a lot of accents (sorry a have to cause i live close to genova)
“War is not good for business..”
Unless you win, then it’s extremely profitable.
Depends who you defeat. War however you put it, and not getting into morals or anything like that, is a massive expense and not always worth it economically even if you win because sometimes you just can't get that much out of it.
@@cammarc like Iraq
@@cammarc but the USA is what it is today partly due to its successful military campaigns around the world..
@@vigneshsajith It's more because of the selling of arms than the military action, after all the USA wisely entered both WW towards the end, and after that had no real major victory, if anything all subsequent wars ended in a messy nothing (with the partial exception of Korea)
It seems profitable, meanwhile war steal and waste billions and billions, plus, discontent among people, and hate
So yeah, not good for *Business* at all
Fun fact: The flag of Genua was borrowed and adopted by England
woahhhh
No it wasn't. It's the flag for saint George and was brought back from the crusades around Richard the lionhearts reign
@@davidtownsend6092 nope, you borrowe It from Genoa, in the 1200s and havent Paid in like 400 hundred years
@@groucho1080p lmfaooo calling ‘em out
@@davidtownsend6092 that was not brought back from crusades by King Richard.
Richard himself claimed to Genoa repubblic ships and the flag to arrive in Holy Land; he knew that with that flag no one could attack him during the trip (except Venice probably).
Even though Genoa borrowed him ships and flag, Richard and the entire english monarchy had stopped to pay its debt after 1771 for the possession of the flag.
Yeah you have a 250 years old debt to pay to Genoa and Italy
Medieval Italy was something like ancient Greece. All one nation divided in many states fighting against each other.
A unified Italian nation is great
Unless you're a separatist.
Classical Greece* Ancient Greece was united in what was known as Mycenaean Greece
@@youraveragepizzaenjoyer4575 not true. Mycenaean greece consisted of several kingdoms who formed what we would call an alliance. For example Menelaus was the king of Sparta, Odysseus tge king of Ithaca etc. But they did have a common identinty.
@@alexalex-si4hl oh I didn't know that, thanks for telling me.
The artwork and animation never fails to impress me, great job Suibhne!
Remember to get your dates right.
Hope to see you soon in their videos soon The Armchair Historian
hey saltyy boi
How do you not get copyright strikes for using official art?
@@NapoleonBonaparteMAGA My artist creates all of our artwork, what do you mean?
You forgot to show the Greek Islands under Genoese Rule as well. For instance, I'm an ethnic Greek, who has Genoese ancestry from the Gatelusian Dynasty on Lesvos, which lasted over 100 years. My surname is a hellenicised version of the Italian name Francoglio, which is more prominent in Northwestern Italy.
Cool which Greek island are you from?
@@moonringXD Lesvos, I mention it in my comment
You suck person with big mouth
I always get a sense that Venice was more "true Roman" than Genoa. I mean, Venice was untouched by the Lombard invasion of Byzantine Italy while the rest of Italy fell, with Genoa being amomg the first cities to fall.
@@thanghoang3198 well that was easy, Venice did not really exist back then
The Maritime Republics of Italy were basically the "Free Cities" of Game of Thrones in real life.
I'm originally from Ancona, now living in Venice. You can't imagine how happy I'm about this video series!
Ancona was also a maritime Republic ?
@@junglejack9954 Yes
Must be good to live in such a beautiful and culturally advanced city
I was hoping for more details on Genoa and less on Venice since blue went quite deep on it
I was gonna say. There BETTER be gondolas. And I hope Blue gets his arms and mouth back soon. :)
wassup mr beat, best teacher
they forget Naples!!
Gondole*
I am and live in Genova, we love saying that global warming Is good because It Will sink Venice.
Greetings from a Greek of Genovese origin from the island of Lesvos. Lesvos was under the rule of the Gatelusi dynasty for over 100 years. I am descended from the families Francoglio and Giannese.
Nice to see a real side of the internet show its true form xD
“I prefer the real Genoese”
“I said the real Genoese”
“Perfection”
;P
@@DevilDaz17 Greetings, it's very nice people still remeber its genoese origins.
Assolutamente d'accordo
Valerio Giordano lmao
Wow, I've never seen a community work together to provide great content like this, so many channels, Thanks Guys!
Nicely done, and such an interesting period of history too!
Great video, Venice and Genoa are always my favourite in eu4!
England asks Genova the permission for using la croce di s. giorgio in their flag. Bel video ma trooppo generale ;) Keep it up!
Also, Genoa invented jean (the fabric). And sailors from its navy were equipped with bluish trousers made of it.
The word "jean" probably come from french "Gênes" that means Genoa.
Later, the city of Nîmes, trying to reproduce it, developed instead another similar fabric that became known as denim (AKA "de Nim", "from Nîmes").
I am in awe with the animations keep going
I'm from Genova, THANK U for doing this video
Keep up the high quality videos.
Nice video love learning of you
I love this! I've always been interested in naval history so today is perfect for me!
This helped so much because i have a presentation to do on Italy
Doge is not the italian for Duke. Duke in italian is Duca. Doge ( just like Duca or Duce - the name with witch Mussolini wanted to be called) is a word derived from the latin verb "Ducere", that means "to lead". Another famous italian military word of the renaissance times is "condottiero", that also derives from the latin "Con-Ducere" ("to lead with").
Doge is used in italian only to designate the head of the Republic of Venice.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doge_of_Genoa
Don't forget that Genoa tried to be recognized as Kingdom since XVII century, appointing "Holy Mary" as queen and the Doge as Her "deputy".
In Istanbul (Costantinople) there's the Galata Tower, made by genoese, because they had the entire Galata quartier
Great work!
Great work man! Please do Romania next
Interesting history, especially about Roman empire, thanks for video! Love Italy from Ruthenia (Ukraine)!
Both cities are so cool!
Oh look a Suibhne video, and this time its one the same day as all my other favourite History Channels. Hooray! :D
Really liked this episode also because I'm from Venice, also is important to remember that when it fall Venice was the most long lasting Republic ever (also to this day) with exactly 1100 years of history
Longer than both the Roman and Athenian Republics?
@@ShahjahanMasood yes
Great video
Awesome video man! Loved the Blue crossover :D
the Feature was nice!
Blue's got a pretty sweet gondola there. I'm jealous :D
Doge is not the Italian for duke . The Italian for duke is duca
Bel video🇮🇹❤
This never appeared in my sub box. I've been subbed for a while now.
The word "doxe" (doge) is really a Venetian language word. In Standard Italian the word for "duke" is "duca" and "duce" means "leader".
You are a bit worong because (i am italian) duca or duce doesn't mean leader but in 1939 Benito Mussolino was called the "duce d'italia" (duke of italy) but it was only a surname and duce or duca mean a nobil person and lot's of them was lived in Toscana Lazio Genova Venezia and Valle d'Aosta
You could’ve thrown Ezio Auditore in there during the talks about Venice as an amusing gag, heh heh.
Good series.
The legend is here
Im subbed to almost all of them.
this videos are so good what's the best one?
Suibhne
and Overly Sarcastic Productions? My two favorite channels!! AAAAAAA!!!
thats a great channel.History of the Turkey please
Many things about Genoa have been omissed.
Great video, please do Netherlands and Portugal please, they're both sort of similar to venice
Animated history of Greece please!
These guys are a pain in the butt on empire total war
Dont forget how the French actually copypasted the Arsenal after conquering Venice
There was also a small maritime republic near Genoa, Noli
I'm just imagining red scowling at Blue from a dark shadow while he records lol.
Wish someone brought me wheelbarrows of gold! Great video!
Wow you back
2:47 doge is a local(venetian) form of the latin 'dux' (commander/guide) which inspired 3 words in Italian :the "duce" (i presume all of know who it was), the "doge" (the head of state of Venice) and the "duca" which is the actual translation of duke (I don't want to be a grammar nazi or something like that, it was to make you learn a little bit of Italy an Italian language)
Can you do an animated history of Greece!! Right from the early settlers to modern Greece?
7:22 @Suibhne You mean the Renaissance instead of the Enlightenment here, right?
Yes! Suibhne upload again!
Hopefully one day we can work together too .. also don't forget to talk about my country, Indonesia 🤓
(if you do that, please do tell us, we will contribute Indonesian subtitle)
when are you going to do Norway?
Currently LMAO at the "exception" to venician-byzantine friendliness being the 4th crusade
Great! You have to do an “Animated History of Portugal”! You would have a lot of heroic and epic material to talk about😄
Hey what the name of music?
7:37 why does the last Venetian ship carrying hot-peppers from Constantinople?
peppers (Capsicum) came from America and weren't part of the eastern spice trade.
the kind of peppers the Venetian merchants would have brought from Constantinople would have been black-pepper kernels (Piper) wholly unrelated to the American peppers.
Yesssssssssss
Nitpick: How can their be 17 others, when you are 1 of 17?
Great video nonetheless!
Cool
Can you made a video for Albania
You should do one on the US and or the world wars
Nice video, gonna watch all of them in this collab, they should be done more. However when you showed the map of the Netherlands you made a mistake. The province of Flevoland wasn't reclaimed from the sea until the 20th century. Not criticism just a tip
New here, I came from Overly Sarcastic Productions!
Maby do a video about belguim?
Hey, could you do catalan history?
“War is not usually good for business...” As corporates of factories that produce weapons, armaments and such. War is good for business depending on which spectrum you look at it. US probably profited a lot in WWII from the shipments the UK and other countries ordered ;P
Anyways, if only Venice colonised the New World ;~; Someone make an alternate history of that
It depends on where the war is fought.
Can you make History of Prussia?
Wait Blue Germany and Austria were the same the latter a part of the former so why did you show them seperately?
To animated history of Egypt please
Respect the effort 1:50 - 2:00
NEW VİDEO !!!!
How the hell dose this video only have 2.7k viewS? Just be a bug right?
Damn what happened to all the history channels on UA-cam they have become well basied is the best way to put it not specifically this video but in general.
Hey guys, I love your job! But I think it´s time to make some vid about pre-colonial american (the hole continentI mean) civilizations!
pls do the history of the usa
Why is is the Reconquista completed in 1453 according to your map ? =p
The worst is that he called "House of Aragon" to the Crown of Aragon(which is a kingdom, not a family)
Can u make turkish history from saka's
Where can i find part 1 & 2 ?
On my channel.
@@Suibhne well, i can't find them. Do you know wether they're unavailable in switzerland ?

Please history animated Moldova
please do the history of romania
History of the Netherlands!
If I recall correctly, the authors of Why Nations Fail argued that Venice's command economy at first enabled extremely quick growth, but later resulted in increased corruption and inefficiency, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Venetian Empire.
I'd like to hear other viewpoints.
I caught that too. Of course a degree in economics from a liberal university would teach that perspective but it is unlikely that command and control ever works over the long term.
@@gregk2369 Precisely the authors' intent. The same thing happened in the USSR: Quick and short growth followed by stunted economic activity.
Actually Venetian empire didn't "collapse". Venice was still holding part of the gains of the 4th Crusade when the Republic was ended by Napoleon. What made it "fail" is the marginalization of the eastern Mediterranean due to the switch of trade balance to the Atlantic. Without trade revenues, Venice could more or less mantain the balance with the Ottoman Empire (whose strenght was declining for the same reason) but no more keep the pace with the other western European nations.
Oh boy I am early
2:48 there is an error: Doge isn't the italian translation of duke, but its etymology, together with the italian word Duce, derives from the latin Dux, which means leader. The italian translation of duke is duca.
The legend says that if you are fast you will find idiots saying "First".
First
@Kaiser Wilhelm von Hohenzollern 1st
@Kaiser Wilhelm von Hohenzollern hahahahah! That was clever af!
@Kaiser Wilhelm von Hohenzollern Tsar Nikolai
@Kaiser Wilhelm von Hohenzollern Da Svydania my glorious emperor. 😢
