@@TheRezro it depends on the canton. In the canton of Aargau he was welcomed "with open arms" since other cantons kind of opressed them. I guess thats also why Aarau was the capital of Switzerland for the first year of the Helvetic Republic.

Switzerland was one of the pioneers of industrialisation in continental Europe and built a very solid infrastructure which is still in every-day use now, over 130 years later... Switzerland was one of the first countries to have converted from steam locomotives to elctric ones... and not fighting wars and not having your infrastructure destroyed and/or not have to pay for the costs of 'winning' a war for decades does help to accumulate wealth... remember there is no winner in a war, just one side who suffers slightly less

The fearsome reputation of the Swiss guards at European courts during the Middle Ages was enough to discourage any thoughts of invasion. Even if a potential foe deciced to invade anyway (Hitler more than likely did), a look at terrain map and that thought of invasion would disappear!

Zwingli's Zurich army later tried to march on Zug, the neighboring Catholic canton to the south. By the time they got there, the soldiers were just kind of tired of it all, so the Zug and Zurich soldiers all got together, ate some milk soup, and went home instead of fighting. The site is now a picnic spot.
It is said that the German Emperor Wilhelm stopped in Appenzell (a rural Swiss canton) on one of his journeys because he was curious about the 'wit' of the farmers living there, which was known far beyond the country's borders. He now had a servant tell one of the farmers that His Highness the Emperor demanded a taste of this humor. The Appenzeller shrugged his shoulders unimpressed and disappeared into a barn. A little later the barn gate opened and a small sow ran across the square with a helmet on her head. A large sow chased after it at a distance. The farmer silently joined the emperor and his servant, who watched the spectacle impatiently and rather uncomprehendingly. "His Highness would like an explanation," grumbled the servant. "Ganz ääfach," replied the Appenzeller, "Kleine Sau hat Helm - Grosse Sau wil(l) Helm!"

You can also read this on each coin: "Confoderatio Helvetica" is written on it. - We were never Germans, but part of the Habsbuger Empire. And the Habsburgs in and of themselves, originally even come from the canton of Aargau, i.e. from Switzerland. - The course of Swiss history is very unusual, even unique. Sometimes even non-Swiss people cannot easily understand this. It began with the Swiss Confederation from which, in the end, Switzerland emerged. Today we are a country with the so-called direct democracy. This means that I as a Swiss have far more political rights than anyone else in the world. - We not only elect our parliament, we can also vote on political proposals. Right now it is their 5 "federal" bills on which we will be called to the ballot box on 27.9.2020. This is completely normal for us and it is a good thing. This is really lived democracy, it only exists in Switzerland!

I'm Swiss and I love the Video, but Zwingli wasn't the only Reformer.
There was also for example Calvin in Geneva.
Not to forget Guillaume Farel from Neuchatel, which was the first Swiss-French reformer ;)
Calvin was arguably even more influential than Zwingli or Luther. American society is quite heavily influenced by calvinistic values.

Fun fact: The Swiss were, and are, absolutely mad about railways. Beginning with the first line, the Spanisch-Brotli-Bahn between Zurich and Baden in 1847, Swiss engineers were quick to recognize the advantages steam railways offered and the advantage offered by Switzerland's unique central location within Western Europe; basically, if anything wanted to pass from east to west or north to south chances are it would have to pass through Switzerland, so why not facilitate that trade and reap the unimaginable profits? The first major step in this transeuropean connection was the completion of the Gotthard Pass in 1882 followed by the Simplon Pass in 1906. With these and other connections, Switzerland became one of the biggest railway hubs in Europe.
Moreso than its international connections, the internal Swiss railway network exploded in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Perhaps no other nation in Europe has experienced such profound railway mania than the Swiss; at times it seemed that every town in the country had at least two different railway companies operating out of it. At the peak of the mania prior to mass nationalization and consolidation starting in 1901 the number of independent railways in this tiny nation was several hundred; even today there are 74 different railway operators in Switzerland. This expansion was facilitated by new innovations that made building railways through the Alps possible and easier. For instance, large portions of the Swiss network were, and still are, meter gauge, their rails set closer together than normal standard gauge railways. This made the lines cheaper to build and meant that they could navigate tighter curves than bigger trains, but at the cost of bigger standard gauge trains not being able to use narrow gauge track. The Swiss had a solution for this though: The rollwagen, special ultra-low flatbed cars with rails that allowed standard gauge cars to be rolled onto them and then locked in place, then being carried on the narrow gauge like ordinary oversized cargo. Another problem facing the Swiss were the steep grades necessitated at points by the mountainous terrain. While some of these could be overcome by looping the track over itself in massive spirals, at other times there was nothing for it but to climb. To climb points where normal adhesion between wheel and rail were not enough, the rack railway was invented; essentially a line of cog teeth placed between the rails and engaged by a cog wheel underneath the locomotive allowing the train to be pulled up very steep grades without slipping. While rack railways were employed on steep sections of normal mainline railways, they truly came into their own on the new invention of the mountain railway, a special type of railway run entirely by rack rail system, thus allowing trains to climb extraordinary grades to reach the tops of mountain peaks. While some mountain railways found modest commercial use such as supplying isolated mountain communities, by and large they served the last great fuel for Switzerland's railway boom: Tourism.
With foreign visitors attracted by the stunning views, supposed health benefits of the pure mountain air, and later by the sporting offerings of the Swiss Alps, the railways offered easy access to the great resorts such as St. Moritz, as well as unparalleled views of the spectacular scenery. Some Swiss trains that catered primarily to the tourist trade would go on to become legends in their own right, with names like the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, and William Tell Express. Such was the popularity of railway tourism in Switzerland that in the 1920's the Belgian-based Compagnie International des Wagon-Lits, or CIWL, the same company that operated legendary trains like the Orient Express, established the only narrow gauge luxury Pullman service in Europe, a tradition that continues to this day as the Alpine Classic Pullman Express.

During the battle of Morat (1476) the Switzerland mercenaries murdered thousand of italian mercenaries, who could not escape from the lakeshore. In the 1515, during the battle of Marignano, the italians, especially the "Armata Nera "(Black army), who still remembered what's happened in 1476 showed no mercy for swiss. I suggest to read about this two battles. Both armies showed incredible deeds of heroism both in 1476 and in 1515.

Something amazing is that every town usually has its own common dialect and one will notice a difference in the dialect by simply going to any other town. The sound of swiss german alone changes too every few kilometres
I would not go so far and say every Town but every Kanton defently. But that is the norm in most Countrys and in the German Countrys like well i also say now Swiss too but Austria and Germany normal. I mean sure it is maybe even a bit more like you say since you actualy have the Swiss also divied in three with the Italian French and German Swiss.
The same in Saxony. Mountain valleys tend to do that.
At the other end you have Northern Germany, where we really can't tell where someone is from by their speech.

If 90% of people don't like you, it's likely it isn't because you're foreign, but because you fail to be a decent person.

I visited Switzerland when I was 13 years old, in 1994. We came all the way from Finland in a bus, taking the ferry across the Baltic Sea and driving through Germany. I will never forget those two weeks! It was the first time I had grape flavoured yoghurt. 🍇🇨🇭🇫🇮😊

You have such wonderfully beautiful nature there in Switzerland already, as you know, maybe what we can offer up here is sense of vast, untouched nature, the magic Nordic endless light during summers, or maybe the kind of violet, mystical light and tranquility of winter. Combined with different kinds of sports and friendly people! Not to forget the 180’000 lakes of course. 😊
My favourite swiss battle:
Tha Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs.
The French were on the Way to Zürich, were the old swiss confederation was in Siege of the city, to end this siege.
The French had 20'000 soldiers with them, including Archers and artillery etc.
So a Army of about 1'300 soldiers decided to go and face oncoming Army. They were joined by 200 Basilean soldiers on the way, so 1500 in total.
They were faced with an overwhelming power, but nevertheless charged and fought to the last man. They defeated around 4'000 french soldiers.
During the battle when the swiss seemed beaten, a royal knight, fighting for the french came to discuss the defeat of the swiss. But he got kind of coky when he arrived (the swiss were cornered in front of a "sickhouse" that had roses in front of it), opened the visor of his helmet and said something like: it would be a pity for all these roses to die due to the battle.
A swiss soldier, threw a rock through the open visor of the soldier and said: "eat your goddamn roses"
Thre knight fell of his horse and got dragged over the battlefield by it, resulting in his death.
The remaining swiss soldiers then got slaughtered. But the impact of this battle made the french reconsider about marching on zurich, where a 20'000 soldiers strong army was waiting fro them.

Yes, this is the exact battle why Basel hates Zurich to this day. The idea would have been that Zurich joined up and helps, but those lazy bums decided to stay behind and let the people from Basel get slaughtered. The dislike just got moved to football.

I just discovered your videos, and as an archaeologist I really like your take on how you explain history, very professional! Especially explaining what ties a population together, what is their identity, instead of just looking at political borders. In the case of the Swiss is the Alpine transumance, as you said. This is how history should always be told!
Nearly two years late, but as a Swiss myself I'm kinda sad that the Battle of Marignano wasn't mentioned at all, as it was probably the most bitter defeat of the Swiss mercenaries, but also solidified our stance of "neutrality at all costs", together with the Reformation as mentioned in the video.
It's funny to hear "Schweizerdeutsch", because as a southern german, i understand most of it, but some words are completely unknown.

The first country I went to outside of my home country was switzerland, and it was a beutiful and lovely place. One of the places I went was Lucerne, where I saw the Lion Statue. That thing is huge and you guys did a good job of depicting it. Lovely statue and switzerland is overall a lovely place to visit.

The attacks in Zurich were due to the military industries there delivering to the Nazis. Schaffhausen seemed to be a mistake.
To this day, the bell of the munot castle in Schaffhausen is rung every year on April 1st in memory of the bombings

Wir Europäier kennen vielleicht nicht alle US-Bundesstaaten, aber mit unseren Geografie-Kenntnissen sind wir, was andere Länder betrifft, den Amerikaner weit überlegen. Die wissen teilweise nicht mal, dass Europa kein Land, sondern ein Kontinent ist. Was kümmert mich als Europäer die Bundesstaaten? The pontifical guard in Rome you can see are "the real deal", there are just more on duty than you can see. It is a great honor to be in the guard, they are still recruited from the best of the Swiss military.
Except they don't just choose the best, you have to fulfill some criterias, like being a practising catholic and being male.
The criteria to become a pontifical guard are quite low. They just ask you to have been in the army in whatever role and rank you want. Just being catholic, something quite unusual when swiss germans are on majority protestants (and are the majority of the population). The other problem to recruit on the pomtifical guard (and this is alao why they don't have high standards) is the salary. You get 1500€ per month when in switzerland the minimum salary to survive is at least the double or even the triple. People don't usually serve for the pope.
@@Vins9393 well, so actually you contradict yourself : to serve at least 25 months for a small salary involves you are very dedicated for the task and usually such an attitude presupposes a strong mental force. Believe me : they don't enlist the first to come, these guys are young men of valor (said by a protestant)

Overall good presentation of the history of my country. Few important things are missing though: the impact from the battle of Marignano for the old confederation (Eidgenossenschaft). It ment the end of further wars of conquest and marked the beginning of neutrality. After Napoleon has been defeated the old conferedation of Helvetia was about to breakdown. To many different interests collided within the federation. Powerful Cantons like Berne or Geneva wanted to go back to the order before Napoleon, others refused this. The Congress of Vienna 1815 kept everything together and ruled out the old power structure. This lead to the creation of a modern constitution based mostly upon the US constitution and the national state of Switzerland in 1848. But before that the old powers tried to overthrow all this with a short armed encounter (Sonderbundkrieg) that was defeated very quick. Neutrality was never ment in a sense for foreign policy alone than for stability in a nation with very different views and intentions. Even today our much complicated system of check and balances and sovereignty of Cantons are aimed at that purpose.

Like, I am in my 20s. Had I lived during any other time I would have likely already had to fight a war or two against people I had no problems with, in regions I now go on vacation.
Regular Europeans were just the pawns in the power games of Monarchs and Clergy fighting over personal matters, vanity projects, and power.
It took two devastating world wars with industrialized war machines until people finally were like, wait a minute, what are we even doing here?

While I knew that my maternal ancestors, the Eisenhauer/Isnor family, migrated from Germany to Nova Scotia during the mid 18th century as part of "The Foreign Protestants", I was surprised to learn that my Maternal Grandfather also had roots in Switzerland.
"The Foreign Protestants" were groups of Central European immigrants from France's Montbeliard region, Switzerland, Germany and Austria recruited from the British Empire to migrate to Nova Scotia during the 1740s and 1750s.
They were instrumental in building my home town, Halifax.
Without the Swiss, Germans, or Austrians, there will be no Halifax.

There is also a local council called Habsburg. The castle is close to Brugg AG. The Swiss branch of Habsburg died out.

You missed one thing that id like to actualy add to, im swiss myself and heard quite a few stories. There's this one story of how the swiss got their flag and what it means. In the Italian wars, when the pope was attacked, all the mercenaries that were hired fled, because of the massive army that was there, except for one nation, you guessed it: The swiss, the pope was able to escape thanks to the swiss guards that held the enemy back, they all died in battle but later the pope awared the swiss a medal for their bravery and their sacrifice, it was a white cross. This is where we got the cross from and that is why the swiss guard exists even today. Before that the swiss flag used to be blood red, indicating the blood spilled from their enemies.
I realy love this video. But it kinda misses the civil wars Switzerland had. That could have been a fun topic with civil wars called "Stick Wars" ("Stöckli Chrieg")

It is HOSTILE neutrality. For example, during World War II, it didn't matter if you were allies or axis, breach their airspace and you are getting shot. As another one, the medieval kings probably didn't want to get shanked by their own bodyguards as a result of invading the swiss.

Why should we have joined ww2 anyway? The first half of the war, we were basically surrounded by the enemy and the war crimes weren‘t even known, so we had zero reason to join and the second half of the war, a few dozen countries were already dealing with them and if they wouldn‘t have been able to deal with them, then they would have been the most incompetent idiots of this world.

And they did so way longer than the neutrality of switzerland goes back. While it became illegal to officially recruit swiss men as mercenarys at some point, it was legal for the individual swiss to join foreign armys until 1929. And even after that there were swiss men who fought for the spanish republic in the civil war in spain or swiss who fought in the Waffen SS. But after 1929 these men where sentenced to prison if they returned to switzerland.
But these examples in the 20th century where clearly politically motivated soldiers and not just general mercenarys.
