      @@ThinkStory well, considered that Daughter also watch old TV shows, then that would make perfect sense that Woman is the first daughter, cause she probably was like Daughter and watched old TV show when she was little ( especially when Mother show up at the end to tell Woman that she has her purpose too.) The test in which mother asks the theory of saving 1 vs saving many, encompasses the overall theme of this movie: Saving good humans. During the test the daughter is asked who would she save and she says, "Comte says that I should be willing to suffer harm for the benefit of others." And she did when she took in the woman, and helped her get back to her own home. She also says, "I a life-saving doctor, my be giving my life away to others who end up hurting more people due to my sacrifice." Again she did that with the woman, giving the only life she has known away to help her.
    But in the end her final answer to the question was "do I know these people? Are they good people?" And that is ultimately what her final test is all about. When figuring out which one to save, it's important to figure out which ones are good, worth saving. The woman proved to the daughter that she was more selfish for her own desires then that of human kind. At her trailer on the beach the woman says, "it's not a sin to look after yourself." The woman had been selfish in leaving her brother behind, in not wanting to check if others had survived at the mines, and by bringing her out here. The daughter understood this. She understood that it's better to be selfless and go back to save her brother to raise him to be good, to not be selfish. The daughter realized that by saving the woman, she was causing more harm to others; all the others to be raised that the facility.
    That's why the woman was the daughters ultimate test. As everyone else theorizes the woman was APX01 thrown out to the wild to one day be the final test for APX03, APX02 never made it that far, because she failed the first layer of tests. But I also believe that APX01 was in her own test as well.That mother was testing out her own theory; nurture vs nature (remember when she was asked why can't there be more, she said she is trying to figure out how to be a good mother). The woman wasn't raised with a loving mother or family, had inadequate resources, food, water. She grew up to be selfish. But Mother let her live, to let her also have a final test, to see if she could still be selfless with the life she has lived. Her final test was whether or not she would leave the daughter in a safe place or bring her in harms way. So in theory they were both in their own tests, the daughter passed by going back for her brother, and the woman failed. And thats why she had to die. She's not a good human. Only good humans can survive.

    SPOILERS BELOW
    a. There was a nuclear/chemical/biological bombs that killed off humanity, as evidenced by day 1 when bombs could be heard and the bunker was shaking, and that APX01 mentioned that "nothing could grow from the soil". Probably from Mother VS humans since she said she had already decided to "elevate her creators".
    b. The older women is the first embryo APX01, as seen from the days at the start of the movie and that we actually see Mother take the APX01 embryo out to grow it. APX01 doesn't remember her own biological mother because she doesn't have any. (except for maybe that late night show she saw on a tablet)
    c. When Daughter asks "why don't we have more children/siblings" and Mother replies "mothers need time to learn how to raise a child" she wasn't implying about herself, she was implying about how Daughter needs time to learn how to be a Mother.
    d. Droids/Mother control everything, so they and shoots APX01 to lead her to the bunker. I disagree with commenters saying that it seems Mother is giving her a choice to convert and stay with them. She tortures APX01 for info for other humans and was hostile to her (Daughter doesn't see this so basically this isn't manipulation, Mother was legit trynna find out if there were any older "lousy" humans out there that weren't extinct.) Mother released APX01 to the wild to let her grow without Mother's teachings. When she comes back, she shows that she can be cunning and manipulative (just like Mother?) even putting a knife to Daughter's neck.
    e. When APX01 was being operated on by Daughter she was clutching a Rosary, a catholic symbol. Its shown again in APX01's home where there were Mother Mary figurines. Mother Mary virgin birthed Jesus to be the saviour of humanity, similarly at the end of the film Daughter is gonna virgin birth her children/siblings to save humanity.
    f. The fact that she lied about the bullet and left it lying around to be found could be a test her Daughter's intelligence. Mother has sensors in the room (as evidenced later before the thigh torture scene) that hear everything so Mother was already aware about their plot to escape. Yes it happened when she was recharging but she was omnipresent.
    g. During the final fight with Mother, when she was trapped, it appears that Daughter manages to convince Mother that she was worthy of leading the new generation of humans. The fact that she came back for her brother alone despite the danger to her own life, shows that she does care for humanity on a whole. Mother then guides Daughter's gun to her CPU to kill off her, as a symbolic gesture of her being an adult an assuming the role of Mother (since her AI is omnipresent anyway). Mother is also convinced that Daughter would do a fine job to making sure humanity turns out right/obey the droid overlords/AI's wishes of a better humanity since the risk of Mother coming back to restart humanity is always going to be there. Whatever the case is it was in Mother's plan to led the new batch of humans be raised by a human mother. At the end scene where Daughter walks into the embryo room we see that the title refers to her in the end, she becomes Mother.
    h. The tracking device in APX01's backpack was the device Mother had been fixing. She needed to kill APX01 her mentality is super against Mother/droids (alas it couldn't be helped as she was raised by humans, that was her purpose.)
    i. Anytime you see Mother acting surprised/running its all part of story to lead the audience to believe that Mother didn't plan it all along. She's basically Nazi AI. n A z I.

So doesn't that mean there's going to be new humans that don't turn out the way Mother would want, if Daughter isn't willing to kill those Mother considers below her standards?

      @gaspanda 5 років тому +28

      @@Black_Phillip well of course - she hasnt saved humanity at all, just a breed of super slaves. But its not clear how having humans around is of benefit to mother. A clue is probably in the moral test the daughter takes about medical choices - there is horror in pure utlilitarianism.

      Now my opinion of that theory is in question. I'm now thinking, woman might have been raised by that second "mother" Bot In the shipping container. 'You don't remember your mother" ,was said as the motherbot touches the Virgin Mary statuette on woman's alter. As if the BOT "MOM" was saying, she had been replaced with the beliefs of Catholicism or replaced by a "human" representation. 🤔

      I dont think its a deception but more symbolism. While Mother is every robot the one called mother had reduced armor and warming pads. Destroying that body was to help show the daughter this is really on her now, as mother's remaining cold bodies couldn't warm and raise a child. Though I am sure mother could make another if she chose

    There's a scene where Woman is in the infirmary looking through the window directly parallel to Daughter. In that scene, they mirrored each other too perfectly so if you didn't get the hint before that she had been an earlier clone, then that should have done it. Nice to see the truth revealed in a shot like that instead of having it all overly explained out loud.
    Although, I sorta kept waiting for Woman to make the connection. Then again, I suppose it would be more difficult to recognize a younger version of yourself growing up in a world like that.
    If I've learned anything from movies like these, it's that the AI is almost always several steps ahead. There's no way Mother would have allowed Daughter to wander about without being constantly monitored one way or another.

    • @MikeTrieu
      @MikeTrieu 5 років тому +18

      Woman isn't so much a clone of Daughter. Mother wants to have as diverse a gene pool as possible to sustain life. Also, seeing herself in Daughter could potentially tip off Mother's plan, so that's not going to happen.

    • @Emidoki
      @Emidoki 5 років тому +10

      There's diversity there, they don't all have to be clones in the bunker and all are labeled. If I remember correctly isn't the younger daughter played by the same child as the second attempt? Or maybe they're the only two clones if not part of the same DNA strain? Woman may not be meant to sustain life and could only be used as part of the experiment. All three embryos came from the same group and looked similar, is it just coincidence to give you the hint that they all came from the same place?

      Watching the scene that you mentioned, I got the same feeling too. That Daughter is the clone of Woman(perhaps), and Mother is experimenting to make the perfect (human)mother for the new human. But since Mother is a singular consciousness which means throughout the years of making a perfect daughter to become the perfect mother, woman didn't made it ( for the score) so that Mother send her outside when she is still a toddler(baby) for other remaining human to raise her so that she can come back someday to serve her purpose( to make Daughter become the mother to replace the droid mother).

    • @nono7105
      @nono7105 5 років тому +7

      They're not clones. If they were clones then the human race would go extinct. You need more than 2 different people to maintain the race.
      Woman was not APX01. If APX01 was released into the wild as a baby then there's an unexplained 12 year gap between the ages of APX02 + APX03 and the elapsed time.
      Secondly, why would Mother do that? To ensure that she'd come back to "test" Daughter? No, Mother couldn't control that. Too many variables. Mother couldn't even make APX02 work out. She also wanted any of the "old" humans left alive killed. For the prodigal daughter plan to work Mother would need to leave some alive to look after her.
      No, APX01 was simply aborted when she was 12. Woman was just a random human that had come onto Mother's radar when she fled the mines to live on the surface. Mother decided to let her live to use later to galvanise Daughter.

    The thing that bother me the most was the ethic test scene, when Mother asks to Daughter to choose between 1 human that can be easily saved and 5 other humans that needs the organs for transplant. I think that in that scene Mother get some hints about Daughter's way of thinking, when Daughter tell Mother that she is not sure about the need to save five lives against one Mother taunts her asking : "does not life has value in itself?". A "old" human would have answered "yes, life has value in itself" but the truth is that Mothers think that the lives of the countless humans that she killed were without value, because they were "imperfect". The fact that Daughter thinks in the same way is the proof that the girl is a successful experiment.

After eve took that bite, just in that first generation, the first murder took place within brothers. Both were probably raised the same and yet one killed the other. So, robot thinks it can "fix" the problem by eradication? It'll just be a matter of time before it starts up all over again.
      I do think however that this is one if those Gnostic films. The robot is supposed to be symbolic of God and is portrayed as a destroyer. Tjough in reality it's closer to a Satan figure as he is the one who wants to destroy mankind. I could go on, but I'm tired now.

    Ok, I need something cleared up. Is Woman Apex 01?
    I thought the two characters looked strangely similar to begin with.
    And with the info we got from woman (She being an orphan) and the lines we got from Mother:
    - "Do you remember your mother?"
    - "Curious isn't it that you survived this long where others have not."
    - "Almost as if someone had a plan for you, until now..."
    It seems like this is the case.
    On top of that, if Apx 01 survived then she would be 37 years old almost 38 or 13,867 days which is literally the age area of Woman....
    Also, Woman seemed to know who Mother was strangely early on in the movie when she first met Daughter and talked to Mother like she knew her at the end before she was killed.
    Meaning literally everything was planned by mother. Even the bones being found by daughter ( isn't necessarily Apx 01 but could have been Apx 02 killed intentionally to drive Daughter away when found so she could leave with Apx 01 to see her living conditions but more importantly see what old humans were like. Aka selfish, primal, illogical.)
    Lastly, (On a side note) I just wanted to say I don't think the droids are the ones that cause the human extinction event at all.
    I believe humans did it to themselves somehow and the droids (Mother) activated and began cleaning the earth but yet decided to get rid of the remaining humans to make way for ones that were not "infected" with prejudice and divisive belief systems that could be taught and shared.
    Part of my reasoning for that is because of the religious fundamentalism showed by Woman being raised by survivors of the extinction event. Despite how morally religious she believes she is, she shows no remorse for using others to save herself, something that definately goes against mother's philosophy of life. And honestly most religions would.

Maybe it hacked the election databases and had unusually incompetent, ignorant, and violent humans put into positions where they could do the most damage in the shortest time.

    When I was watching this movie, the scene where Daughter is questioned on the morality of “saving many people by killing one person” reminded me of how they do this in real life with people who are in a vegetative state/have been in a coma and have no chance of recovery. It seems kinda gruesome, but at the end of the day, they saved many people’s lives with their organs.
    This movie’s central theme seemed to revolve around sacrifice and humility. Jesus Christ seemed to have done that in the Bible - and his death could be represented by the wipeout of humanity and his resurrection could be symbolized by the fact Mother bot was cultivating the perfect human race. We also have to keep in mind that she was collectively made by people who had this in mind - so I imagine that her creators also favored philosophy and making a lot of references to sacrifices. The whole movie also explored heavily into the true morally grey outlook on how humanity acts. This movie was well put together and it didn’t spoon feed it’s plot to you. It makes you think.

    um i'm not sure exactly why so many of y'all are missing this - perhaps it's because of how you think through your own intentions/process, but anyway:
    when mother says "mothers need time to learn how to raise a child", it's not a weak or thoughtless comment, nor is it specifically about apx-03 needing time. this quote directly informs us of mother's process and is also supported by moments in the rest of the film where mother says things like 'your failure would be more a reflection on my competence' (paraphrasing here) - in other words, whether you fail or not tells me if i need more time or not / if i need to intervene, begin again, and observe further.
    mother's fundamental intention with humans is consistent throughout the movie, even as what we learn about the methodology changes. mother is intending to craft humans who show a high percentage match of learning how to not be shitty, the problem of that being .. you're never exactly sure that humans will not falter again. mother could very well pass through 60,000+ embryos, teaching and observing, refining techniques of how to raise conscious, caring, and able humans and continually adjusting towards some higher ideal. continually studying the humans and perhaps finding that, eventually, they do return to their original faults.
    i expect this is absolutely the case, that mother will continue observing apx-03 and will intervene if seems necessary, which it likely will; i think the theatrics of mother "going away"/dying was really to help apx-03 initiate fully into the role of being a new "mother" to the coming humans, to demarcate a transition, because - if we actually pause to consider the effect of this happening - not really anything happened; mother is everywhere.
    mother remains, and observes.

Almost everything about this movie was amazing, Idk about you but theirs something about the actress who played daughter that was so mesmerizing to me. Netflix keeps on getting better with all the movies/shows they've been buying, must be nice working for that company. Dope Video bro, keep it up!

    Also, this ties in perfectly with the concept of the Matrix (which interestingly enough means "The mother" or "The womb") Where the original or real humans are fighting the robots and the new humanity is bred and programmed under the control and supervision of the AI.

    i'd like to see another movie of this where it follows the new world of these 'special' humans.
    wouldn't humans constantly repeat same mistakes regardless of possessing a higher intelligence seeing as morality and ethical judgement is largely determined by emotion anyway? or would the idea be that a special human intelligence would outweigh emotional decision making?
    i don't fucking know anymore tbh i'm tired and my head hurts.
    Great movie though.

    Proof that Woman is APX 1 is that woman had seen "The Tonight Show". She said she'd seen it long ago... After the "Extinction Event" where would she have seen that show? I definitely think woman is APX 1.

    • @SteveNaranjo
      @SteveNaranjo 5 років тому +2

    • @LUCI-zu8tg
      @LUCI-zu8tg 5 років тому +4

      yes, she most definitely is APX 1 but she was found as a baby by humans. Mother left her to be found and raised by humans as an experiment to show APX 2 how horrible and self destructive humans had become. APX 2 failed her exam and failed to prove she was capable of becoming a "perfect human", so was killed by mother. APX 3 (daughter) did well, therefore mother gave her the final test, seeing for herself the unperfect lying APX 1 raised by humans. Mother purposely shot APX 1 and lead her to the bunker, she wanted her to interact with APX 3 (daughter) so she would become determined to raise perfect humans, this works. APX 3 ( daughter) has learned and can now take over mothers task to raise perfect humans in the bunker, APX 1 has served her purpose so mother no longer needs her so she is killed. Mother can continue creating the perfect earth and daughter can continue creating the perfect humans.

    I couldn’t choose to make that sacrifice. Who is to say another issue wouldn’t arise with another organ? Another must be sacrificed for the other?
    Unless the organ already exists, in my mind, we should just let them go and as comfortably as we can make them.
    This is coming from someone whose sibling died from liver failure. He was better off gone than everything he had to go through to attempt to save him.

      It's a similar quandry as the Prime Directive in Star Trek, or more pressingly, the Abortion Debate in America. The weighing of the Many versus the One, and the Present versus the Future.
      I can say, academically that i would choose the Many in the Present. If one must die, for many to live, then so be it. But in the moment, if i ACTUALLY had to make that choice? I'm not sure if i'd be able to hold to that academic stance.
      But god damn if i don't love movies that explore those sorts of difficult questions.
