I'm a fan of Netflix buying these festival films, that I never would've even heard of, let alone seen.
I'm not a fan of the __ trend that every film is expected to set up a sequel, franchise, or hint at some sort of extended universe.
Those are my thoughts

That's the issue tho, people leave their agency up to things like netflix or cable so they are never really truly paired with what may interest them most, better to research independently.

Lauren Nicole I’m glad I’m not the only one that had that reaction. I thought I only thought that way because I was adopted. My definition of “mom” stretches way beyond strict biology and Mother fit that definition in the film to a T.

I am pretty comfortable with having robots who are like humans, although I am too quick to put all human characteristics on them... Like not killing your own children! Then again some humans would be capable of that too. Sci-fi is so interesting.

I remember watching the movie and seeing the 13,xxx days passed. I did the math and got about 40 as my answer. I just thought I was bad at math lol. Guess i wasn't lol.
But still in the movie daughter says to the mother that "you murdered your own children just because they didn't measure up" so isn't it obvious that she murdered more than one child.
Also swank had a book with pictures of people .
Hilaryes story line seems to be clear: why?
Maybe when hilary was created ,there were some people left on earth, that explains her adoption and stuff, so after realizing what mother is she decided to run away and so on.
But hey it's a movie anything can happen. Enjoy it while you can.

Such a great video, really loved I am mother and missed the amazing and very harrowing detail about the 37-year lapse between the little girl and the teenage one!
The amount of days was a red flag for me, but doing math during the movie wasn't something I was up for.
Honestly when CJ first brought up using time travel to save her brother I was reminded of the law of equivalent exchange. When Death comes for someone you can't stop it or else it'll just move on to someone else which we see when Sebastian dies and we see again when Sebastian almost died another time. Someone has to take Calvin's place so personally I believe there is no way to save him without sacrificing someone else.

Great reviews. I thought the ending of See You Yesterday would be CJ sacrificing herself, thus ending the loop with the inevitability that someone had to die. I like your theories as well.

I am mother was so good until the very end. It felt so anti-climatic and pissed me off when mother was "killed" even though she directly told her daughter that it wouldn't do anything
I think Daughter "killing" Mother was more symbolic than anything else. Mother's goal was basically to raise the perfect mother for the embryos, so this was her way of passing on the torch to daughter. By the end of the film the mother in the title "I am Mother" is not Mother, it is Daughter. I think it was supposed to feel sort of hopeless, showing that no matter what Daughter does, it's still all by Mother's design.
See you yesterday was such a waste of time I wish I built a machine to get it back. Open ended stories are cool but it felt like the character never learned from her mistakes

I Am Mother is ultimately a story about parenting. Finding the right balance between being protective of your children and also letting them endure hardships so they can grow as a person and eventually be able to survive on their own, and even become parents themselves one day.

I had seen See You Yesterday, then searched for videos about it... I found this and after a few seconds I decided to just pause, watch I Am Mother, then come back and finish your video. I actually did all this from 1:30 to about 3:30 AM my time. Totally worth it. I Am Mother was REAAALLY good.

I haven’t seen see you yesterday yet, but I did watch Do The Right Thing and it was like taking a time machine from 1989 to the present day (or at least 2015). It’s a very relevant film still.
I loved I Am Mother! It’s an amazing sci-fi movie and should be recognized as a new classic!

See you yesterday felt really personal for me because it was shot in every neighborhood in brooklyn that I've lived in or went to school in
I liked the opened end of “See You Yesterday”. I interpreted it as no matter what we invent, how hard we try racism and police brutality will always be a part of our lives but does not absolve us of our duty to combat it with everything we have. That’s why CJ went and would probably keep going back and get stuck in a loop.

Yo what a fantastic breakdown of two films that I watched and critiqued, but didn't come up with these conclusions. I Am Mother was great in the respect that I could absolutely see Mother pulling all of the strings in the background (especially with the introduction of Hillary Swank). With all of the clues that there were two embryos before daughter I have to image that Swank was embryo one, and the bones from embryo two.
In regards to See You Yesterday I have to admit that I am not the most optimistic person, but I never even considered the fact that CJ was caught in a loop. I thought for sure that she would get it on the fourth iteration we just wouldn't see it in the movie. That being said one could interpret her being caught in a loop as a young POC struggling for justice in a broken system that continually disappoints and lets them down: Either they have to sacrifice their hope, their friend, or their family because the system has set up a no-win scenario. This is both equal parts pessimistic and a call to action from the audience to make sure this loop doesn't begin in the first place. As always fantastic observations about both films. Glad that I stumbled upon your work, and I can't wait to watch more.
I'm so glad Mother was practical and not CGI. Brought realism to the effect.
I think the daughter program was specifically made to create a doctor but also a maternal human mother.
Examples:
1: The Moral Questions
2: Her willingness to help a stranger
3: Her restless need for truth
4: Her willingness to leave safety to go back for her brother.
It all started with her reaction to the mouse. Which I’m sure mother let in.
That wave of satisfaction when he says... "Let me explain.".
15:36 a causal loop is imperfect, by it's nature it begins as a domino effect of one path, if time breaks up in to difurent timelines, it might have a consequence of infinet looping, but in order for time travel to be possible time must itself be something so sooner or later manipulating it leads to some anmaly that effects the loop.

If you're making a video about it, it's usually worth watching. So before I got spoiled by the video, I watched I Am Mother. Other than the lack of "Thank you for helping me live" from the outsider, I enjoyed it.

Really liked I Am Mother. Felt they did a lot with a little in that flick. Dark and suspenseful but doesnt slip into horror. Well worth the watch if you like those Orwellian style sci fi flix
