Dream Flight Libelle Glider Ultimate Unboxing and Slope Soaring

  • I recently purchased Dream-Flight's Libelle Discus Launch Glider (DLG) and this is my new favorite plane. It is really well designed, builds easily, and is incredibly fun to fly. I am a big fan of their Alula Evo too, yet the Libelle is far more interesting to fly because of all the different transmitter mixes you can use with it. I plan to post a transmitter set up video sometime soon.
    I have installed hitec hs 35HD ultra micro servos but they are not readily available so it's best to go with the servos supplied by dream-flight. This way you can get things to fit without having to cut into the plane. I am using a Spektrum AR6115e receiver and the fit is tight but it works.
    This video is also my take on how unboxing videos should really look. Consider it the UN-Unboxing. :)
    The music is a remix by MOWE(bootleg) of a Kelvin Jones song called "Call You Home". I found it on Soundcloud. The song is super fun. Hope you enjoy the flying and a bit of some surf clips I have spliced in. We recently had some off shore wind here and while the surf was small, it was still really fun and clean.

    This plane is so killer. The rudder makes such a big difference in how it flows on the slope. It wouldnt be nearly as fun without, glad df decided the extra weight, cost and complexity was worth it. It is. Great unboxing by the way... wish I had bought that kit.

    Man, I love your videos! It was funny, cut right to the chase, great music, INCREDIBLE piloting skills, and the best editing I have seen on UA-cam. Simply superb. It must have took forever to edit this one. Great work! I would love to fly there. 😂

    Great glider and flying, fun music, lovely scenery, a train, a dog, two pelicans, and surfing, and a super edit, what else can we ask for? Thanks for sharing!!

      berrcutio thank you very much! You are clearly brilliant for recognizing the "super edit". :) I put a serious amount of time into virtually every cut of the video and had to shift and splice and reshift and resplice so many times it made my head spin. Some parts drag on a bit and are too redundant but, overall, I am really thrilled with the video and grateful that the song artist was generous enough to let me use a bootlegged version of his music.

      +alienw99 glad to hear you are enjoying it. there was a time that the video got pulled from UA-cam because the music artist did not want the remixed dance version of his song out on the airwaves. I am really thrilled that they decided to let me go ahead and use it. The footage was molded around the song and there would have been no going back to remake it for another song.

    Best unboxing video ever! I spent the first half of the video looking at the waves, glad to see you caught some! What was the wind speed like? My old Alula is often blown out by the wind here, I'd get a Libelle, but I'm worried I'll have to fill it with lead to slope in 20 knots. Maybe I'll reserve the 20 it days for kiting.

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  10 років тому

      we have consistent 5-12mph winds here during the day. I dont think ive flown it in 20 knot winds yet but suspect that it would be way more wind than thus plane really needs. on 20 knot days definitely go kiting or break out a heavier glider

      That will be great and much appreciated. I also need to decorate mine when she arrives. Did you go the Krylon rattle-can approach?

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  10 років тому

      A View I used sparing amounts of iron on Ultracote(red stripes) and Microlite(silver). Microlite is incredibly thin and hard to handle but it is indeed light. I am not familiar with whether there is a Krylon product that is compatible with foam and unless you have already tested some on foam and found it to be OK. Either way be careful with any spray can paint product and foam. You could end up melting the foam.

      I have been flying the wings off my AHI but just took out the Libelle again the other day for the first time in a while. I still marvel at how light it feels in the air and how much fun it is to fly. I have not posted anything on the topic, but be sure to look for online tips for how to set up a switch for launching that gives the plane a bit of rudder and less elevator for launches so it releases more straight and does not arc up or curve to one side abruptly. Once the plane reaches altitude you can flip the switch to fly normally.

    Great video. I've watched it lots of times. I have a Libelle now and it is great fun as it will recover from a complete stall in about two or three feet of altitude. Love to fly it with complete abandon. On another note: what kind of camera was used to record the video? I assume it was attached to your head in some way. Would like to capture some flights myself.

    Awesome job, just reading about this model in the rc UK magazine and here it is? Where did you shoot your video, at first it looked like Salt Creek/Dana Pt. CA? Who sold you your Libelle? thanks

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  10 років тому

      Hey thanks I appreciate it. The video is shot in Del Mar CA about 3 miles north of the Torrey Pines Glider Port that can be seen in the distance at 1:04 in the video. I got my Libelle directly from Dream-Flight. Ordered it on their website. I got the servos from a local hobby shop for what it is worth.

      I am going between this and a powered glider as I have zero experience with DLG...is it hard to learn?

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  10 років тому

      Brett Fereday it's not hard to learn but if youve not done much pure motorless flying, its best to get a powered glider to start. that way you get the best of both worlds. You can motor around when there's no wind or use the motor to position yourself for gliding and slope soaring. I started with a radian pro glider. with some minor reinforcement, its a great plane to learn on and continue to use as you advance. Im working on a video of some Radian footage with tips on how to fly it motorless. should have it up in next few days. good luck.

      Very cool. I live just north of you in San Clemente and have 6-7 weeks of crashing a flysurfer from hobbypeople. Seemed like I was starting to have more flight time and less repairs, but I know that plane is overweight and not balanced. Thanks again and if you ever find yourself in Dana Point, hit me up and you can be my guest for SUP. Brett

    Awesome video. I'm from Del Mar myself and am getting into rc planes. Can you throw this glider out from the cliffs on most days or only on certain conditions?

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  7 років тому +1

      Brent Sander it's good to hear there's some other rc enthusiasts in the area. This is my go to glider on days when the winds are relatively light in the 5 to 10 mph range. I never paid that much attention to wind direction in Del Mar until I started flying gliders about four years ago. Previous to that, all I could ever tell you was that it was either glassy or blown out and not what direction it was coming from. as you may know, the best slope conditions are when the wind is coming straight on and perpendicular to the cliffs. That condition occurs maybe 10% of the time in Del Mar. It usually comes from the south or north at an angle to the cliffs. if the wind is strong enough you can still fly when the wind isn't quite lined up. you will want to practice on some other inlands slopes before flying off the cliff though because the consequences of crashing on the cliffs are significantly more hazardous than in other places where you can retrieve the glider safely or without having to swim to get it. :)

      28th St. Air Land & Sea thanks for the info! I hear a lot of great things about this glider and look forward to flying one soon. Maybe I'll see you out there. Thanks again.

    Is it flexing the wings when you do down turns ? Or am I wrong? As a DLG I though it could be a bit more sturdy...

    • @28th_St_Air
      @28th_St_Air  10 років тому

      I have not noticed any flexing and because there's a decent amount of dihedral in the wing it may give the appearance of flex in the video. The plane is very light so there's not much load on the wings. It's like a butterfly on steroids.
