    Yes, I finally got me an ASW28 glider, because so many of you asked me to review it, and I have to say that this is an awesome piece of plane! It is fast and agile and can do aerobatics without much effort... so it is quite fun... but as long as you run it on 4S, forget about the 3S stuff the manual recommends! Slap a 4S battery in there and it will liven up quite a bit... but you might need some weight at the back to balance that out! I do have some gripe with the QC on the tail pieces, and how they were glued... or... not... glued, and also with the lack of proper plastic hinges on the control surfaces! Come on Volantex... you slap a V2 to this model... at least bring it REALLY up to date! Otherwise... awesome performance and flight characteristics and if kept light it will do amazing things!

    ASW28 is a nice looking model. And YES the tail needs more glue! Had a similar problem top and bottom with a runcam swift mini on it. My heavy landings did not help either. Need to be slightly tail heavy to glide properly. Camera on the tail and metal gear servos mean no lead needed. Another interesting video. Please keep them coming!

    As you may already know that tail mass can increase tail inertia for sluggish pitch response to a less handling pleasure in flight control. This could be a practice when all else is not an option. Hope this helps.

    Yes it's an excellent machine for the price. but soon after I maidened mine, I added 3 pieces of credit card plastic between the tailplane and the top of the tail at the rear screw. This changes the wing to tailplane incidence angle and really changed the gilder into a floater, in my opinion. Also I generally use smaller batteries, like 1300mah lipo. And the final "2 mods in one go" I did was a big one. I removed the red winglets, stiffened the whole wing with 10mmx1mm carbon strips, installed edge on into the wings, and all the way out into some wing extensions I made up from ordinary polystyrene foam. It wasn't easy and the tips are kind of fragile, but they are covered with glass reinforced tape and seem to work well enough.

    It goes great on 3S if you just fit bigger prop blades - I use 12x8. I fly on a 3S 2700 which has to go under the rear (top) ply plate to get a sensible CG - I took the front plate out as it serves no real purpose, and the wheel & well to make more room for the battery. Finally, as you discovered the tailplane incidence is out ... it needs the trailing edge raising about 2mm to avoid flying with a ton of up trim. For convenience I changed the wiring harness to use a single 4-pin plug to each wing.

    • @ArxangelRC

      @@ArxangelRC are you using the ASW's lower Kv motor in the Phoenix? AFAIK the ASW still comes with an 850 Kv, whereas the Phoenix (and Ranger) have a 1050 Kv one. That would pull some serious amps with a 12x8 on 4S! My 850 Kv motor on 3S is around 36A with the 12x8.

    I am putting this kit together right now but no battery yet and never used Lipo either. How long can you fly on power? Have you slope soared it yet? Thermalled? It sure looks nice but I calculated the blunt 1/8" trailing edges added up 12" sq of base drag so I am sharpening them . Years ago I had an Astroflite ASW-15 with ailerons coupled to rudder. Flew like a dream. Thanks, live 100 years.

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  4 роки тому +1

      Actually my endurance runs were on a LiIon 4S2P battery, around 6000mAh, and it could go up to 1 hour powered flight... not sure how much you can do with soaring, and I've not done slope soaring yet! The Autopilot I have in the Phoenix 2400 does automatically couple the ailerons with the rudder for single stick coordinated turns, but it is pretty docile... so most of the time I do end up giving it rudder as well!

    Hi. Thanks for your videos. Can you explain more about the battery, please? How do you calculate a 4S lipo system to a LiIon (4x?) cells system? I'd like to try this. Cheers.

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  3 роки тому

      Well... with LiIons you do have more considerations compared to a LiPo, mainly because of they lower discharge rates! I estimate or measure the max amp draw of a system, and build a LiIon battery based on those specs. Not that difficult! For instance, if we are talking about high current situations... perhaps in some of them a LiPo is still the better option, but there are some higher drain LiIon cells, which do have a bit lower capacity... but still better power to weight ration than LiPo.

    Hello,
    Love your videos and reviews. I am planning on purchasing this plane within a few days.
    Question: how is this plane compared to the radian? I have the radian and I wanna say I'm passed the "new flyer stage"
    IS the asw 28 a good 2nd plane ?? Is it easy to fly?
    I like flying to scale and fly med to slow sperd and glide around. I've seen some other people UA-cam review that this plane is quite challenging to fly and hard to get into the air. Some people said it's hard to launch the plane and you have to run then throw the plane to get it to fly from launch.
    Like what I said I'm pased the "beginner stage" BUT I'm not an expert in flying just yet ( NO acrobatics and 3D FLIGHT). I'm more of a novice flyer. Also I wanted to add that I flew a REAL PLANE in my high school. It was part of an elective class that I took. So i can add that as a somewhat experience to my flying.
    Would you recommend this asw28 as a second plane?

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! :)
      Honestly... I've never had to run to get a plane into the air... not idea what that is about! Running while throwing is not really adding any speed to the model because it is hard to run with that thing above your hand, and then it is even harder to throw it well in those conditions... so basically you are better off staying in one place and just doing a nice strong throw! That being said... really not sure why the ASW28 would be hard to throw... yes, it does require quite a bit of weight to the tail to balance, and if you don't add that... then throwing might become an issue, but with proper CG it is easy to fly and easy to get into the air! However... if you like slow flying... I would suggest the Phoenix 2400... much bigger wing area and can definitely slow down more reliably... though at first train for that higher above the ground, just to get a feel for the plane!

I have a glider with a matek f722 wing (INAV) , it is the first time that I try to fly with a stabilization board , currently, doing tests on the bench, everything works, (no errors and I can perfectly arm the engines) I have a solid signal from the gps, ailerons automatically respond to deflection, elevator responds to deflection but the only thing that does not move is the rudder , Is this normal when testing on the ground?
    Please, help me. Thank you very much

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  4 роки тому +1

      Well I have no idea if that is normal for iNav, but it wouldn't affect in flight performance for the most part! Weeeeeell... haven't flown them for long enough to know... but as it stands... the ASW28 has a lot less drag... so it will be more efficient overall... BUT... the Phoenix 2400 has more wing area and I think can thermal better... and can slow down more reliably! ASW28 is a quick glider for sure... less wing area, less drag, higher speed! Really tough to say... both have advantages over the other... and it also depends what the goal is!

    The model has been sold for years with the same two design flaws, but they are very easy to correct.
    1. Glue 30 g of lead on the end of the fuselage and the vertical stabilizer, which is very easy in the hull without being seen from the outside.
    2. The EWD is improper and needs to be raised to place the stabilizer on the back edge with 0.8 to 1 mm thick paper.
    3. With a 3S 1500 mAh battery or with 2 3S 1500 mAh batteries connected in parallel, it is now possible to fly without changing the center of gravity. The second battery is simply pushed exactly between the wings, focusing on the upper board, which guarantees a minimum flight time of 25 minutes and almost always with a low thermal of at least 35 minutes - do not worry, the battery will not slip during the flight!
    After the correction you will get a superbly flying model that can compete with much more expensive models as it is usually lighter.
    The model is also suitable for easy aerobatics and although the surfaces sag unbelievably, I have not yet managed to destroy it in the air. I'm thinking about making the wings shiny, but this is definitely not necessary and colorful so I can see the model better.

      ua-cam.com/video/o67_x_1a4gY/v-deo.html
      Pad only on the rear edge of the elevator!
      You should start with 0.7 to 0.8 mm first - in the end the "correct" setting is also a question of your preferences. After that, the ASW can be flown a little slower without sinking faster. But don't overdo it, the ASW is not a floater.

Experience with gliders I have, though not extensive, and with thermaling too, but there is a very specific reason, from my past experience, why I would have that expectation SPECIFICALLY from a Volantex product! I first got into proper FPV with the FPV Raptor, which, when overweight and nose heavy, was absolutely notorious about its spiral of death, which was recoverable, but took some experience to do it, and quite reactions! I've only had one crash from such a spiral, and it was because the battery disconnected in flight, speed dropped... and down it went! All other cases I've been able to recover before it hit the ground! From because of this model I developed a fear of flying slow and dropping throttle, especially when it came to Volantex models, and the ASW with those thin and long wings, who's design hadn't changed since the time of the FPV Raptor... kinda was nudging me again to that trail of though, whether it will stay in the air, or tip stall... hence the mention! Perhaps I should have explained it better in the video, so people would know where I am coming from with that statement... but coming from that point of view... doesn't make the statement any less valid!
