I only know how to recognize cults and high control groups/individuals because of how much I've studied them. They really do seem innocuous at first.
I've probably seen this film about a couple dozen times. I've been recruited into a business pyramid scheme, but picked up on all the red flags because of this film. Recently I went to a Transcendental meditation center (a front group), but soon found many red flags after paying for the course and digging into its history. (I'm getting a refund soon). Another point to add cult behaviour doesn't just stop on religious but can also happens in non-religious grup such as social media influencer, politics and even in your family.
I don't know the chances of this comment being seen, but me and my friends did a group costume off of this video for Halloween (2022). I got to be the guy on the table with the flowers (stuck fake flowers down my slacks) and we had reflective-cloak guy + Mr. Sunglasses. We made ~20 tshirts in a (very accurate) blue with 'Cult Member', gave them to associates; even roped in our Physics teacher to wear one. I am free from a cult, and I hate it. I want to go back, I can’t bring myself to do it. I’d like to go back and have a family that loves me, and will always have your side and always be on your side. It’s almost like home, being outside of a cult is very scary when I think about it more and more. I think that is a symptom of our modern world. We all crave our natural state of small community from our nomadic evolutionary period that dominated the majority of homo-sapiens existence. Social media does not replace socialization, and our brains require social presence and positive social support networks. I see evidence of this in the massive increase in fringe extremist groups/mindsets. Of course, this has been influenced greatly by malicious groups... Still, I think so many are willing to join these movements because they are also lonely and scared. This state of existence we have designed around ourselves is completely at odds with our very being. I think we urgently need to reduce our community sizes and increase our investment into empathy and understanding of our species' connection to the world around us. Unfortunately that is against many powerful group's best interests. What a bizarre state of liminality we reside in currently. I wish you the best in finding peace, love, and community.
I been in a few churches like what is being described in the video! The best religious groups encourage individual self reflection and making choices for yourself. The most cultish religious groups I been to always encouraged following their teachings no matter how many personal sacrifices you needed to make to conform. In short..... Healthy religion: gives you tools to help you develop in your spiritual lives. Cult: gives you the tools so that you can sacrifice your self for the group.

I was Mormon my whole life. My family lineage goes all the way back to New York where Joseph smith founded the religion and my ancestors were some of the very first members of the church even being baptized by Joseph’s brother (hyrum smith) and because of that, even considering the idea of leaving the religion never was a possibility. It’s the only life and meaning to existence I’ve ever known and understood and 80% of my friends I’ve ever known have been in the same church.. but I left 3 years ago and it breaks my heart to watch my siblings and family members and friends all believe what I once did. It’s sickening. I’m struggling to answer the question: so I dedicate myself to show them the lies and tell them the truth or do I support their beliefs and ask that they respect mine and just let them stay in the church because they are happy and it does do a lot of good things? You have to understand that even though I started to have many doubts, it took me 2 years from the time I stopped practicing to the time that I was ready to start finding answers knowing that it might not all be true. And even though I thought I was ready to handle the fact that I might’ve been living a lie my whole life, I was completely wrecked for months once I actually found out the truth about the church… I was devastated. Since it was all fake, then what else is and what can I trust is true with anything in life I thought was the truth? I made me question my sanity and reality. I’m great now though. I love where I am!

This makes me disgusted. Because there are so many churches that are like this. Even though it’s very subtle, religions and cults are different. When you think about it the Mormon church is kinda like this- please don’t be mad but the prophets and the singing and the book and idk about you but my church said we shouldn’t hang out with non Mormons. If anyone is curious I left the church at 15. (Two years ago) now I know their homophobic and they preach the idea of men being above woman. I’ve been in contact with a friend who’s still in the church who is uncomfortable around me because I’m nonbinary and an ex-Morman. She keeps talking about wanting a nice husband. I could talk about this for a while and I know this comment is gonna make people mad but- I’ve just had bad experiences with the church, it caused me self doubt and major self esteem issues. I felt like because I wasn’t a girl living up to thier standard of “an obedient daughter, wife, and mother.” That I wasn’t good enough and no one would love me. I think its better to stay away from exterme and wierd beliefs and doctrines just for the sake of escaping tough times or challenges or the harsh realities at large. I would choose to be brave and face them rather than joining some stupid group following some insane beliefs!

I only know how to recognize cults and high control groups/individuals because of how much I've studied them. They really do seem innocuous at first.
I've probably seen this film about a couple dozen times. I've been recruited into a business pyramid scheme, but picked up on all the red flags because of this film. Recently I went to a Transcendental meditation center (a front group), but soon found many red flags after paying for the course and digging into its history. (I'm getting a refund soon).

I don't know the chances of this comment being seen, but me and my friends did a group costume off of this video for Halloween (2022). I got to be the guy on the table with the flowers (stuck fake flowers down my slacks) and we had reflective-cloak guy + Mr. Sunglasses. We made ~20 tshirts in a (very accurate) blue with 'Cult Member', gave them to associates; even roped in our Physics teacher to wear one. I am free from a cult, and I hate it. I want to go back, I can’t bring myself to do it. I’d like to go back and have a family that loves me, and will always have your side and always be on your side. It’s almost like home, being outside of a cult is very scary when I think about it more and more. I’m too independent and I have nothing to rely on, I’m alone in a way, and I’m still surrounded by people. It’s an awful feeling
I think that is a symptom of our modern world. We all crave our natural state of small community from our nomadic evolutionary period that dominated the majority of homo-sapiens existence. Social media does not replace socialization, and our brains require social presence and positive social support networks. I see evidence of this in the massive increase in fringe extremist groups/mindsets. Of course, this has been influenced greatly by malicious groups... Still, I think so many are willing to join these movements because they are also lonely and scared.
This state of existence we have designed around ourselves is completely at odds with our very being. I think we urgently need to reduce our community sizes and increase our investment into empathy and understanding of our species' connection to the world around us. Unfortunately that is against many powerful group's best interests. What a bizarre state of liminality we reside in currently.

I was Mormon my whole life. My family lineage goes all the way back to New York where Joseph smith founded the religion and my ancestors were some of the very first members of the church even being baptized by Joseph’s brother (hyrum smith) and because of that, even considering the idea of leaving the religion never was a possibility. It’s the only life and meaning to existence I’ve ever known and understood and 80% of my friends I’ve ever known have been in the same church.. but I left 3 years ago and it breaks my heart to watch my siblings and family members and friends all believe what I once did. It’s sickening.
I’m struggling to answer the question: so I dedicate myself to show them the lies and tell them the truth or do I support their beliefs and ask that they respect mine and just let them stay in the church because they are happy and it does do a lot of good things?
You have to understand that even though I started to have many doubts, it took me 2 years from the time I stopped practicing to the time that I was ready to start finding answers knowing that it might not all be true. And even though I thought I was ready to handle the fact that I might’ve been living a lie my whole life, I was completely wrecked for months once I actually found out the truth about the church… I was devastated. Since it was all fake, then what else is and what can I trust is true with anything in life I thought was the truth? I made me question my sanity and reality.

I’ve been in contact with a friend who’s still in the church who is uncomfortable around me because I’m nonbinary and an ex-Morman. She keeps talking about wanting a nice husband. I could talk about this for a while and I know this comment is gonna make people mad but- I’ve just had bad experiences with the church, it caused me self doubt and major self esteem issues. I felt like because I wasn’t a girl living up to thier standard of “an obedient daughter, wife, and mother.” That I wasn’t good enough and no one would love me. My uncle is a cult leader, we start a cult when i was 11yrs old, he build a small church, then we recruit by giving a flyers to the people, the flyers was containing a claimed that jesus is here and jesus is waiting for you go this address and you will see jesus, after that we give a rice to all people that attend in bible studies, then another day some people will attend again and again, my uncle needs an actor like i am blind or i am sick then he pretend to heal me, then my uncle started a doctrines for the people every attend is 1 to 3 doctrines, that is 19 doctrines all 19 doctrines is with some apologetic words and bible verses, then when the people was finish a doctrines they baptized by my uncle in the river like in the bible, then when our members is already 100 and 60 to 70 is active he started to recruit a workers, like, music organ operator, choir, readers, and in the inner core is learning a doctrines to became a pastors or minister and some is helper to my uncle house that voluntary serving her, and all the members are required to voluntary giving a flyers in public when your work is done, i remember my uncle said to all members "i see you everytime do not lied to me the spirit of jesus is in to me and i am jesus in this era" after completing all workers in the church and inner core, then my uncle started to required all members to donate every church hours sunday and every 15th and 30th of the month. They will grow fast since a pastor and minister of the church is only 6months learning to became a pastor and minister then my uncle started targeting a wealth people or influence people like public servant congressman, governor, mayor, councilor, they recruiting a people with fear in their word like "you are died you didnt came into the paradise if you didn't follow me and you did believed me i am jesus in this era spirit of jesus is in to me" 😂 some government officials and rich people will became our members they donate a millions just to have an own lot for the church that they build, then yr 2008 our first big church was already build, a church will house in the back of church for workers. Until my uncle was foolish mind to claimed that he is immortal 😂 then some former member of the church shoot a gun in her head while in public market then my uncle died at age of 48, i am age of 19 now i am already a pastor when my uncle died, then our cult started to fall down, an active members starting to collapse and the donations started to collapse too. Then the leaders of the church schedule a meeting including me, then they said to me "pretend that spirit of my uncle is now in me and i am now the new jesus and new leader of the church" 😂 but i didn't accept the offer of church leaders, then the church members active is totally drop off, and church leaders is always convincing me to do what they want but i always reject it 😂 the leaders of the church is already know that my uncle is a false prophet but since they are already fool by my uncle and they gained a salary they like to continue to cult, until my old sister was became a new cult leader while me is quit to that cult religion 😂 until that cult was totally close the donations was not sustained a salary of the cult leaders then my sister was decide to disband a cult in 2012 and gone to that area and change her name and sell the property of the church like lot and churches a cars, they she started another business 😂 sometimes when i imagine the past that is like a dream that they came and gone, some former members was became my friends and i said the truth to all former members but i always pretend that i am also a victim and pretend that i am fool 😂 because i need to do that for no accusations against me 😂 pretend to be fool and also a victim but the truth is not i already know from the beginning because i am a founding members but i can't do anything because i am only a kid and my uncle is supporting me to my tuition fees my food or allowances to the school so i only do that i think is right 😂

A very good example, this should definitely be shown more in education systems. A good religion doesn't force you to change it should ask and left you choose to change or better yet not need to change at all!
