I can relate so much to this, here's how started to were I am now. Z killer karambit Kershaw speedsafe Ontario rat 2 Spyderco tenacious Crkt m16 14dsf Spyderco delica Paragon Warlock And then the slysz bowie.
The Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa, and Porsche 959 poster in the 80's got me. There's a BBC Documentary called "The Century of the Self," that hits this concept on the head.
Nick the philosopher. First 2 min hit me hard. We.. are.. just.. never satisfied. #notabrilliantinstinct greetings out of Amsterdam! Keep up the good work
Think of the money we would save if we just bought one good knife and then called it quits, sadly it's hard to do that because we are always looking for that next grail or whenever fits our taste. I just recently entered the midtech section, hope to experience a custom someday. Great video, Nick. Hit all the good points and answered the questions that I had.
Amen to that! It is definitely satisfactory to own a collection of knives though. I know I personally enjoy switching knives from day to day, it isn't practical, but to hell with that.
+Nick Shabazz I feel the same way. I mean don't get me wrong, if the time arises were I need to cut something, I will certainly do so, but owning a knife and just fondling it brings great pleasure.
Nick. I really don't comment on videos very often. but you're the man. your content value is some of the best for your type of video. I never feel like I'm waiting time when I'm on tour channel. keep it up
Gerber propel AO was my first $100+ Knife.. that’s where this all started for me.. I really appreciate you Nick taking the time to put these videos together and sharing this information. I knew about this concept, but to hear it articulated was bittersweet.
Having been an audiophile since I was a kid, I always knew that the best way to help people understand is to "put the better knife in their hands." Play great music on great gear, and let the sound sell the gear. This is exactly why discussing audio gear online is a pointless activity, and why there's so much hate surrounding better audio gear. Most people don't care. In the end, music lovers or knife users will either give enough of a damn to themselves become audiophiles (or whatever other hobby you like) or knife snobs, or they won't.
The key to managing this condition is to remind yourself over and over of the concept of diminishing returns. If at some point, and in all these type of fields that point exists, you'd have to pay double to get say 6% more quality or function, consider getting your satisfaction from value for money spent.
I was watching g this with my friend, then my friend was like, I don't have this, so I asked him why he had 50knives in his collection and he told me to shut up XD
I really enjoy the humor and discussion you put in your videos. As a part time worker and full time student I love to vicariously enjoy the craftsmanship of the gear you review. I have finally got my "dream" knife or iteration of it rather.. a microtech mini socom. I have other decent knives in my collection but have lost interest in them. After watching this, I again came to appreciate and fall in love with all the kinks and joy all my knives initially gave me. I just want to say your videos are very entertaining to watch every upload. (:
Hi, my name is DarthVirtus, and I'm a knife-a-holic. Great video! I've discussed this idea a few times on the forums, and you're right, it's true with anything we collect and it applies to many aspects of our lives. The problem with buying things is we always want more and more things. Suddenly, we just have this large collection of stuff around us with little recollection of how we arrived in our current situation and we still want more. But it's just sooooo smooth tho! TheApostleP and Campfiretalk have made videos on this before entitled "The Progressive Insanity of Knife Collecting."
Man, if I could thumbs up this video a thousand times, it would not be enough! Well put, and so accurate. Enjoy the now because there is always a " well if."
As more CRK, Shiros, arrive at my doorstep, and I eye the Norseman, this is certainly a very good video to come across. Perhaps I’ll take a moment for a step back to enjoy the greatness in my possession, instead of looking for the next best thing.
Some people say that collectors of anything are self-treating for depression. Anytime the mood takes a dip, a collector will go out and buy something. It's called shopping therapy. The trick is to buy just one. You don't need to buy 5 knives at once to address the problem. Personally, what I find works is to do a bit of writing. It stimulates you in the same way. A bit of writing in the morning will keep me comfortable all day if I am having a problem. Anything that gets the adrenaline pumping does the trick.
This makes so much sense. Thanks for it. I just started on the treadmill, my most recent knife being a Schrade SCH503RB, which is head and shoulders above all the cheapo department store Swiss Army knife knockoffs I've owned, but I'm already looking upward.
I have actually just recently taken this journey through hedonic adaptation with knives, no thanks to your videos of course, HAHA. Thankfully due to technological advancements 5 years later, I can take that journey for 1/10th of the cost and still end up with some surprisingly good knives.
Oh man it's just so true. Instagram for me had made it so much worse to see all these amazing collections and customs and everyone always has something better and newer. And I think I'll never get there...then U realize it was only a few months ago I got my first ZT. Now I have a factory custom ZT, an Umnumzaan, a Reate Horizon D TI, and an XM-18. I went 30 years always loving knives but staying at about $60 or below lol. in 4 months my "problem" has escalated rather quickly....
One way to avoid buying more is to personally improve what you have. I have modded a few knives to improve them and scratch that same itch. In this way as I am improving with my tastes, I am also becoming more able to make things better and better identify what I actually want to inn prove.
Nick, Now I understand that I need help to quit my addiction. I have been collecting high end fountain pens and watches. I don't want to start with knives! I have spent enough money on watches and pens to have funded a modest retirement account. Honestly collecting this stuff is like a drug addiction. We are junkies if you really think about! But I must admit is has been fun buying all this junk! Perhaps there is some truth in what some people say about less being more.
Hey man. Hook me up with some fountain pens. I started 2 years ago and only have the heart to buy one a year. I have an engraved Waterman Paris and a Mont Blanc. I don't want to look either of them up because the Waterman was for my birthday 2 years ago and the Mont Blanc was for my graduation. I know they're pretty good brands though. But hit me up with any more if you have suggestions.
I'm really into balisongs, which is what spawned my overall fascination with folding pocket knives in general (still trying to work on getting into fixed blades), but I started out with a cheap 10 dollar bali-comb from a novelty shop in the town I live near. For MONTHS I was flipping those, just doing openings and closings, I thought I was the most kick ass senior at my high school 'cause it looked like a real knife Then I decided "Well, why not get a real blade? I'll feel a lot better flipping something real", so I picked up a Bear and Sons 114. After a while of flipping that guy around, another friend got interested in it and I sold it to him, and not 20 minutes later ordered a cheaper CCC. It wasn't as heavy or bulky, and it looked pretty cool, so I was happy and thought I'd be set. After THAT broke, both tang pins fell out, I went back to Bear and Sons, but I got the 115, which was supposed to be a much better flipper and be much more forgiving than the 7 ounce bali I started with. A few days ago though, the safe handle's pivot snapped in half, and I instantly went looking for a new knife. I'm not waiting on a used Kimura 11 I bought from a seller on Facebook. Now that I look back on all of this, I can slowly see an addiction starting that I have NO intentions on stopping lol. My current goal is to save up for a Replicant, which I'm sure I'll love and love for ages, until I want to get something custom, or a Benchmade 87 or something... Lord help my wallet.
I was lucky enough to drop the early stages, and went straight for a mid-price range Spyderco, kept me happy for nearly 2 years. Well, I think you know what happened after that. Still love a good value every day of the week, doesn't always have to be "better" to keep you happy for a while.
My takeaway from this was that I should just stop fighting it and add a Sage 5 and a ZT0452CF to my collection. Maybe a proper Dragonfly too, since the serrated Salt doesn't really count. Thanks Nick, love the videos.
I just picked up my first knife. it's the civivi elementum. I know there is better for the price but I have waited for it for so long but now I'm looking into a custom made Benchmade mini crooked which is like 4 times as much as my elementum. will I like it 4 times as much, probably not but I do like it and as I start collecting I'll stick with the cheaper knives and get a mid one every now and again but I'll never be able to get a Chris reeves knife I'm not that lucky
Wow. This hit way to close to home.... As I sitting here and watching this, I think to myself: " I startet to wear some kind of Knife when I was 15 years old. A cheap, old and small knife I found in the drawer of my Grandfather..and it was great. And basicly, 15 years later, I am doing the exact same things now with my. + 500€ Sebenza 21, as I was doing with my dirty, old knife back in the days, and dont get me wrong, I love my Sebenza and I love having nice things in my EDC Gear, but...do I really need a S35V blade to open a Box and cut off a loose threat?....Apearently yes...yes I do... And I have a problem and I love it!!!
2 khife is enough for me.. My tactical khife and my small khife for cutting cardboard and some food preparation. And also using them for my job as a personal security..
This video summarizes my current life starting about 4 years ago when I was 12. first I started out with your top of the line high performance stainless super-steel that Mtech is known for and then 6 months later upgraded to a cheap kershaw and then the ugly beauty that CRKT has called the fossil. I'm currently looking for something with a decent steel (anything better than 8Cr) hopefully I'll end up with a nicer Kizer and that'll satisfy me for a while but being 16 its hard to save enough money to buy a nice knife. anyways a nice video Dr.Shabazz and thanks for a peek into my future.
went to a store to pick up my most expensive knife yet, a delica. i walked out with a benchmade mini grip 555-1. a full 100$ more than the delica. now im looking into a zt 0450cf.
I haven't upgraded past a delica. it's been really hard not to go buy a pm2 or a griptillian, but I've held out. I did buy a cold steel kudu a couple months ago to satisfy the addiction, but come on, it was 8 bucks. that's the best way to feed to crave
You literally described my life. I started collecting ONLY Basic videogame consoles, then without noticing it, I started buying limited editions/more expensive versions/ 2 of each one, etc, until I realized that I needed to stop and stopped. Then I jumped into sneakers and after realizing that it was pointless having 3, 4 or even 5 pairs of the same sneakers in different colors/ editions I stopped. I kinda also felt into the watches world but in a more controlled manner and I have been able to control it. A year and a half ago I bought a spyderco delica 4 and here I am, trying to stay with production knives and not jumping into the custom's world. LOL HAHAHA
I was looking for a video on the psychological phenomenon of the hedonic treadmill... and now i might get into knives. I guess I'm still on the treadmill
I'd do anything just to handle a Norseman. It's my grail of grails. Wouldn't even take a full marfione custom over one, unless I could sell it to get a Norseman. Man I love that knife. Hope one day I can pick one up!
JBlack Don't worry, you will. And it will be replaced with the next grail before you know it. We are all on the treadmill brother, all we can hope to do is keep on jogging...
A good and necessary reminder on the slippery slope of "collecting." There's a lot more going on than merely looking for the next cool knife. Humans have a talent for undermining themselves.
+x Randorii You know, I just don't tend to buy fixed blades, as I don't use them very often outside the kitchen, and there's not the same "mechanical marvel" aspect as with a good folder. But if somebody sent a stash of them my way, I sure would!
Mmmm... I don't know. I'm still just as happy with the first knives I bought as with the new hotness. Everybody wants more, but don't forget your old friends.
We all started with a shitty zombie knife. My first purchase Tac-Force Zombie Hunter speedster. Then I got a SOG Fielder, then an Ontario RAT 1, then a Kershaw CQC4k, then a Spyderco Endura Wave, then a Spyderco Manix 2 lightweight... never has a Nick Shabbazz video been so relatable, and I can relate to a lot of them.
Buddha nailed this 2500 years ago and even pointed towards a way out of it. Unfortunately it is really hard and boring so I'm going to get another knife.
My path so far has gone Nameless crap knives Cutjack/rat2 Elementum. I'm still a little baby knife collector but soon enough I'll be getting more expensive knives but not yet.
@@whiteroseproject7207 I have a Benchmade mini grip in 20cv, a bugout s30v, pm2 in s30v, hogue x5 in cpm 154, a wharncliffe delica in hap 40/sus 410, a manix2 is maxamet, and just ordered a massdrop laconico keen in s35vn. I have a pretty good range of steels, locks, materials, blade lengths and shapes.
@@csquared4538 recently I picked up a spyderco dragonfly in H1 an the native 5 in Lc200n, a benchmade bushcrafter an turret. The BM turret has blade play an a comically bad grind.
@@csquared4538 I handled the bugout and just wasn't impressed. Maybe I'm missing something. I love s30v it's just an all around great steel. How are you liking maxamet? I'm really interested in maxamet but haven't found a knife I like it on yet.
@@whiteroseproject7207 I don't much like the bugout either. In fact after getting a spyderco I don't much care for my Benchmades in general. I enjoy maxamet, I enjoy the patina, which occurs from fingerprints, but I havnt put it through any crazy hard use yet. Kind of waiting for something that makes sense to use it so I'm not dealing with sharpening it all the time. I still need to get a couple more diamond bench stones to get it back to razor sharp.
For me there's not the need to chase "perfect". I appreciate different knifes for different things. For example you might buy a knife just because the shape of the blade is beautiful. Maybe you will never use it, but just be glad to have it as a collectors item. Another knife might be less beautiful, but has a great opening mechanism and lock.
Just bought my most expensive knife ever. £120. The knife before that? £75. Before that? £35... £25... £15... £8... £4... I too have a problem. My latest purchase hasn't even shipped to me yet and I'm already looking for the next one. Two years ago I considered a Sebenza to be the grail of knives, and something I'd never reach. And yet, the way I'm going, I might end up getting one before the year is through. Pretty sure my Hedonic treadmill is in overdrive right now...
I went from a Delica 4 to ordering a Medford Marauder in less than a year. The Slysz Bowie is literally my work beater and I work in a lumber yard 😅 #KnifeProblems
What really sucks is being a Canadian knife collector where everything is so more expensive. Nick saying the Delica cost around $70, but up here its around $150 which is just bull, really makes you pick and choose your next knife for the collection
I've seen people get ripped off by sellers on amazon, i know amazon has good customer service but I would rather not take the risk and having to go through the steps to get a proper refund then go back and try it all over again.
I know what would "kill" the Umnunzaan for me even if it was offered to me: the hollow grind. I don' tlike hollow grinds. So I would have to find another knife with all the Umnun's qualities but with a flat grind. But then if I saw another knife of this level but with a convex blade I would have to have it...
"And you probably do too if youre watching this video" Sir, i think it is illegal to watch me watching you and call me out in such perfect detail. Youll be hearing from my lawyer!... as soon as i finish buying a few more knives...
Don't forget the most important part of that 1st knife...ZOMBIES!!!! Great video, a lot of insight here. One thing though: like sex, nothing will replace the feeling of that first loved knife.
+Nick Shabazz Y'know, you strike me as a guy that would have no problem exacerbating a problem. I've been seriously considering purchasing an Umnumzaan. What say you?
1) Watch my Umnum Review. 2) If the phrase "$425 hard use knife" sounds reasonable to you, go to town. I sold mine because it was just too pricy for me to use as intended, but the perfection of build was great. But if Shiros and Beggs are on your table, your cost-carry-comfort-curve may permit the Umnum.
Such a lovely video ... Are you active on twitter so I can credit you? My favorite bit on all your videos: "and that's a lovely thing". Brings a smile to my face :-)
It's actually kinda hard to believe that most of start out with the $20 Walmart kershaw, and it goes from there. To the hundreds of $$... but at least I know I've spent more money on quality in some respects. I guess?? Lol
With knives it is dangerous, because they are not really that expensive. Yeah, they can get up into the thousands and if you want something totally bespoke, they can get even higher. But compare that to watches, which start in the hundreds and go into the hundreds of thousands before you get to the top. Even the most expensive Grimsmos and Shirogorovs are about the same prices as relatively cheap wrist watches. Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, etc. all make watches that price up into the six figures, sometimes higher. So if watches are your thing, the stopping point is easier to come by, because you cannot afford to keep going unless you sell your house, all of your possessions, and your first born child. Whereas, I could afford a Grimsmo or Shirogorov, I'm not going to ever buy them, because I don't consider knives to be worth it given how little I actually use them, but if I wanted to buy a $1500 knife, I could and I probably wouldn't really notice the effects on my finances in the long run, unlike if I tried to follow the watch path. And don't even get me started on cars or art work.
Fortunately for me and my wallet, I'm still at Delica level.
But the PM2 calls to me.
Did you ever buy that PM2?
Nice to finally have a name for this condition. Unfortunately, the doctors say my bank account only has so much time left...
Very insightful.

I have preached the same idea... not in knives... but same concept. Nicely done sir.
This straight up blew my mind. Great video as always!

I haven't upgraded past a delica. it's been really hard not to go buy a pm2 or a griptillian, but I've held out. I did buy a cold steel kudu a couple months ago to satisfy the addiction, but come on, it was 8 bucks. that's the best way to feed to crave
I went from a Tenacious to a Mini Grip to a PM3 to a BM 940...I am struggling to not make my wife get mad :)) Thanks Nick
The exact same thing is happening to me with victorinox knives!
I'd do anything just to handle a Norseman. It's my grail of grails. Wouldn't even take a full marfione custom over one, unless I could sell it to get a Norseman. Man I love that knife. Hope one day I can pick one up!
JBlack
Don't worry, you will. And it will be replaced with the next grail before you know it. We are all on the treadmill brother, all we can hope to do is keep on jogging...
I never knew what this obsessiveness was called. Thank you so much for diving into this. I too am guilty of climbing the knife collecting ladder.
+Ian Medina If it brings you joy and you can cover the rent, no "guilt" involved!
Good advice
Hi my name is asmodius and I'm a knifeaholic.
No worrys, you are in good company.....
PS: Wow am i late to the game...
Lust of the Flesh, Lust of the Eyes, and the Pride of Life. The Ego is insatiable unless crucified.
A good and necessary reminder on the slippery slope of "collecting." There's a lot more going on than merely looking for the next cool knife. Humans have a talent for undermining themselves.
It’s called consumerism to try and fill the void where I’m from and yes I’m afflicted myself.
Well said my friend. Any plans for fixed blade reviews in the future?
+x Randorii You know, I just don't tend to buy fixed blades, as I don't use them very often outside the kitchen, and there's not the same "mechanical marvel" aspect as with a good folder. But if somebody sent a stash of them my way, I sure would!
Mmmm... I don't know. I'm still just as happy with the first knives I bought as with the new hotness. Everybody wants more, but don't forget your old friends.
I wish I had found this channel 3 years ago.
Amen.. and well said
Haha, very interresting and fun video 😊 well done, very entertaining
I'm not even interested in knives but this was a great video.
Yes, I indeed have a problem, and my problem it's my student budget
Buddha nailed this 2500 years ago and even pointed towards a way out of it. Unfortunately it is really hard and boring so I'm going to get another knife.
Keep up the great vids!
This is such a weird fourth wall moment, because I just upgraded from a Leatherman Micra to a Spyderco Dragonfly 2. Noresman, here I come. XD
I thought fourth wall is like when a cartoon character turns to the camera to address the viewer? I think in this situation this is coincidence.
My path so far has gone
Nameless crap knives
Cutjack/rat2
Elementum.
I'm still a little baby knife collector but soon enough I'll be getting more expensive knives but not yet.
I bought 4 knives in about a month. I dont make a lot of money. I'm hoping my collection is now complete!
It's not. It gets worse. Start researching steels an there's no turning back lol.
My first knife was spyderco civilian. Am I doing it wrong? I honk spyderco is like a gateway drug.. I’m currently on ZT obsession.
I started right at a pm2 now I'm on a WE obssesion
Just bought my most expensive knife ever. £120. The knife before that? £75. Before that? £35... £25... £15... £8... £4...
I too have a problem.
My latest purchase hasn't even shipped to me yet and I'm already looking for the next one. Two years ago I considered a Sebenza to be the grail of knives, and something I'd never reach. And yet, the way I'm going, I might end up getting one before the year is through. Pretty sure my Hedonic treadmill is in overdrive right now...
going down the rabbit hole, it happens to all of us knife nerds
I went from a Delica 4 to ordering a Medford Marauder in less than a year. The Slysz Bowie is literally my work beater and I work in a lumber yard 😅 #KnifeProblems
What really sucks is being a Canadian knife collector where everything is so more expensive. Nick saying the Delica cost around $70, but up here its around $150 which is just bull, really makes you pick and choose your next knife for the collection
dunno where you're buying from, but I bought an Endura 4 for about 100 CAD which matches the exchange rate for USD from amazon.ca
+chibraxial Why not? I'm precisely opposite. Convex makes for durability, but at cost to slicing (imho).
"And you probably do too if youre watching this video"
Sir, i think it is illegal to watch me watching you and call me out in such perfect detail. Youll be hearing from my lawyer!... as soon as i finish buying a few more knives...
Most I spent was 40$ for spyderco resilience, all knives I own I use, if I spent 100$+ I'd baby my knifes
storry of my life, Nick
What am I even supposed to do with all the tools I've hoarded these past few years?? I can't even sell them 😱
Don't forget the most important part of that 1st knife...ZOMBIES!!!!
Great video, a lot of insight here.
One thing though: like sex, nothing will replace the feeling of that first loved knife.
I have a problem too
Hi my name is Jonathan, and I own a Todd Begg Bodega. I have a problem.
+Grunik Yikes. Luckily that's a problem that's easy to solve. Just email me, I'll give you my address, and you can send your problem to me...
+Nick Shabazz Are you sure you wouldn't prefer the Shirogorov?
Yeah, it's a bad problem.
If you're really serious about treating your issue, you'd better send both. :)
Nice one Nick. Let's continue to have a problem together!
It's not a bad addiction to have; headphones and cameras, for example, can be much more expensive as an addiction.
Lol
I’m at the chapter in the story where I’m shopping Chris Reeves and know I don’t need it.
I started with a 20 dollar knife and I have 35 knifes and have been collecting for two years and haven't gone up in price at all
+Julie Klanke That’s the only sane way to do this
Most I spent was 40$ for spyderco resilience, all knives I own I use, if I spent 100$+ I'd baby my knifes
so...better to stay with z-hunter
Cristian Popescu truly the best knife for the humble man
Such a lovely video ... Are you active on twitter so I can credit you? My favorite bit on all your videos: "and that's a lovely thing". Brings a smile to my face :-)
+Peet Sneekes I'm glad you enjoyed! Alas, I'm not a Twittererer, but you're welcome to link to ua-cam.com/users/nickshabazz.
+Nick Shabazz Done: twitter.com/peetsneekes/status/698892888529305600
Keep them coming. I picked up on your channel via Reddit.com/r/knifeclub/
+Peet Sneekes You're a gem, Peet! Thanks for the shout-out!
That's what makes it fun! Haha
Any bit interested in a trade for the gmt?
+dylancast Nope, sorry!
It's actually kinda hard to believe that most of start out with the $20 Walmart kershaw, and it goes from there. To the hundreds of $$... but at least I know I've spent more money on quality in some respects. I guess?? Lol
'Orgasmic bliss.' I'm stealing that phrase.
Man I just started my search for the perfect chiefs knife
i wouldnt mind a fancy slipjoint but Im broke. cant have hedonic adaptation when you're broke
"I was finishing up school"
....wait. how old are you nick?
TK421 He had a Slysz Bowie when he was 17.. Holy shit
He was probably talking about his doctorate
I would subscribe to a Nick Shabazz Philosophy channel
Its just normal to strive for perfection probably you should focus on perfecting your skills instead of your belongings
Yup. And there is always another one...
I just found this...I have a problem
obsession such a harsh mistress
