    This is a great video. I especially agree with the comment of gratitude and knowing when we have enough. That is where I think people get derailed, I practice gratitude daily to keep me grounded in the things that I do have and not what I want.

    I feel like the Hedonic Treadmill is unavoidable unless you’re constantly efforting to practice gratitude and mindfulness. Everything in this world is fleeting - everything. Hence, when your happiness or sense of gratitude is attached to the attainment of certain ‘things’ (career goals, a relationship, attaining a certain financial status, etc) you will inevitably return to a baseline level of happiness, or even get more depressed, upon achieving that goal. As these attainments are fleeting, just like literally everything (every ‘thing’) in life.

    Nice explanation. One excellent way I've discovered to deal with hedonic adaptation is the practice of stoicism

    I'd say that it's impossible to step entirely off the hedonistic treadmill, as it is in human nature to seek more and better.

    I needed that, i've been wondering why i'm still not thrilled about my home in which I bought last year or my new car this year. It's like 'next...' and i hate that the novelty wears off. But i'm glad it's a human problem not just me.

    Great video Anthony. I always enjoy them greatly.
    One thing I'd like to point out, practicing gratitude on a daily basis or as Sonja Lyubomirsky calls it, "counting your blessings", doesn't work if you do it too often. Spacing them out seems to be a more effective strategy.

    Wow, that's a GREAT VIDEO! Thanks a lot! I've seen the concept on Irvine's book: the guide to a good life, in which he gives practical advice on stoicism.
    Among the techniques, there's negative visualization, through which we will step out of the treadmill mentally.
    The goal then is to change our state of mind. Really useful.
    My best regards from Brazil,
    Aleno

    I always fascinated by the fact once a man found one extreme in his life ( hedonistic treadmill) in this case, he trys to answer it with an other extreme like minimalism when the fact is that happiness occurs in balance life. Minimalism and hedonistic treadmill are both dangerous when they are at their extreme.

    I had a fucking dream which i lived many lives where “satan” gave me everything i wanted and it was a drug it was never enough i keep getting more of what i want i was never satisfied my mindset when i get this ill be happy and i keep getting more and more. The only way i came out of this trace in the dream was to be mindful that no matter what i will no be satisfied so i had to be grateful and not depend on items or people for happiness. The thought of “when i get this ill be happier” make your happiness lower alot. We all have an average set point no matter what we can reach back to it being grateful will make your set point high towards more happiness. The only way to beat “satan” was to get that mindset!

    I also think that it has to do a lor with how hapy are you in normal terms for example, maybe a dude who works out daily and is healthier has a happier normal state, so when he gets promoted or gets a hot girlfriend, his also hes happier 3 or 4 months but everytime hes happier than us because in a normal state he gets motivation and Dopamines from the gym

    Wise words as ever Mr O, and poignant to me as my job of 23 years now hangs in the balance. I can't help but notice (as an established Break the Twitch follower) that your subscriber numbers have been rocketing since you hit the Magic 5000. Has that just 'happened' organically, did you do some promotional stuff, or do you simply become more featured by UA-cam elsewhere after the 5k? No worries if you'd rather not answer, I'm curious as I'm still at the 'huge amount of work for small increases' stage.

    I don't understand this fully. If you will return to your normal state of happiness no matter what, why try to do greater things? ie starting your own company or following your dreams if it won't leave you any happier than you are now?

    It seems very difficult to believe that people return to their previous level of happiness or unhappiness in 3 to 6 months. If that were really true, why live mindfully? You'll just return to your baseline. For example I'm much much happier married than I was when I was single, and I've been married for a long time and I was single for a long time. I'm much happier now than when I had too many possessions. I really enjoy your videos but this one puzzles me. If you have time could you please respond back to my comment? Thanks!

    • @aongaro
      @aongaro  8 років тому +9

      +Dsquared Fanatic I think I may have not done a very good job of explaining this fully. I do believe that we can get happier as we go throughout life based on the decisions we make and the attitudes we curate for ourselves. I should have gone into more detail about that, that in fact we are not stuck at our current level of happiness for the rest of our lives.

    • @Art_and_Soul_Studio
      @Art_and_Soul_Studio 5 років тому

      Maybe that goes for the people who are currently single and believe that they will be happier if they were in a relationship and have that mindset then later find out that they couldn't find happiness in being single and that is why they are unhappy now married.. perhaps you found contentment as a single person and now that your married your even more happy because you found your companion?

  • @alinm4844
    @alinm4844 5 років тому +2

    This is partially bullshit. I can say that I am happier now after changing my job. At my previous job it was very stressful, I used to get angry and curse out in the office almost daily and also my life after work was influenced by this. My perspective on life was very dark. I was not happy constantly and now I am much better constantly, not just a few days after changing my job. How this fits into this theory?

    Simply a concept. Is there evidence to suggest this is true and/or untrue? With virtually all concepts, there will be outliers.
    In terms of the bankrupt lottery winner, an financially informed personal likely will be fare much better in that situation.
    There is a disconnect.
    Wanting more =/= dissatisfaction, and I think the entire concept of the hedonic treadmill plays off of this fallacy.
    On the other hand, I bet there are also many people, for example, who can never adjust to the life of becoming disabled. Many take their lives to end the discomfort.
    It is perhaps important to be wary of our language so as to reflect concepts, ideas, and theories as they are - not as universal laws or inherently natural human behavior(s).
    However, I’m not rich. And I’ve not become physically or mentally disabled. Maybe when I win the lottery I’ll be more enlightened!
