I think the biggest of the production companies that uses FOMO is noted for having a hole in their blades. In a way it’s hard to fault them for this approach because folks like to feel ‘special’ by having something somewhat unique and the marketing approach has undoubtedly made their sales soar. The downside of FOMO marketing is the loss of customers who are either just sick of it & abandon the brand or customers who don’t buy their ‘lesser’ versions of the knives because they’re not desirable any longer. Hi Nick, how do you feel about brands like Great Eastern Cutlery? On one hand I get that they are limited by the nature of their manufacturing practices, but on the other hand it drives me crazy. Thanks, Nick!
FOMO is the name of a really sweet Korean Fried Chicken food cart here in Portland. Really great place. I think I'll quietly sneak over there for lunch this week. Thanks, Nick!
Is it slightly more acceptable for benchmade to have a "first production" for 1000 knives and then go to regular production. Some folks do seem to covet the first production tag on their blade. But it doesn't seem to be a full on FOMO but maybe slightly. I got the PM2 w/ orange handles and black blade because I like the color combo.
That’s totally fine with me. There, collectors who care can get the first run stuff, but it’s not artificially capped to force everybody to play stupid games.
“We put an astronauts butt in the corner” haha, but I totally understand the fear of missing out. For instance I have no need for a pm2 it’s too big for my needs and it’s (in my opinion) ugly, the para3 is, while still ugly, a way better knife for me. But I still feel like I want/almost need to join the pm2 club. I often try to buy limited edition knives mostly because I want the normal knife but black g10 is something I want very little of, so when it comes to colors the sprints/limited runs are my best chance. But I agree when I started giving myself permission to “miss out” it was really helpful.
Really liking your thoughts on this. It's even worse in the guitar pedal scene, as you might actually "miss out" on an awesome, unique sound. EQD recently teamed up with Sunn O))) to release a signature pedal. They made like 500 and could have easily sold ten times that many. I was disappointed.
Talk about FOMO... when I see "Discontinued" on any of the online blade vendors... I begin to twitch spastically - sometimes even for a knife that I'm not overly interested in!
I think limited editions have their good, bad and ugly. It’s nice sometimes to have something special. There are many companies that DO limited editions just for marketing sake, but having a unique piece or a limited edition does feel rather special sometimes. So long as it’s not double the price:)
The recent Spyderco Lil Native St. Nicks Exclusive sold out in just three minutes. If you weren’t committed right away you miss out. This is just the reality of a lot of exclusive knives. You really will miss out and possibly have to pay higher secondary prices later down the road if you want one.
I know exactly what you are talking about and I've had these thoughts before as well but at the same time I love my Spyderco sprints that I know people are selling for twice as much at least in part because others desire them
Keep this in mind too. Not to long ago, you did a review on a CKF Sukhoi 3. I was very glad you did, because it helped me make a decision to get one. I'm glad I was able to get one and probably wouldn't have, had it not been for your review. In life, I believe it's better to make a decision based on direction over fear, but sometimes FOMO get me too.😉
There are tons of cases where the sprint run is the definititive version of a knife. The spyderco yojimbo 2 has a thin tip, and tougher M4 steel makes sense. I also like the natural G-10 :). The sprint status is annoying, because it will be tough to replace a lost or damaged one
@@TECHFIGHTER I had to hunt for it on eBay :/ There's a couple other models I have my eye on, but considering how many more knives I have than I need, I may have to let them slide. The urge to get the hundred pacer when it's on closeout will be strong
As ironic as this sounds, I'm too poor to afford to pay attention to limited edition stuff and in general to purchase stuff under pressure. My money are too little and to precious to through around on stuff I can't research properly first! I felt something like this recently with all buzz around the SKX being discontinued. I almost went as far as asking a friend to borrow the money to get one while still available... But then I allowed myself a little more thinking time and decided that wouldn't be a smart move. There are so many modding sites for SKX that you can build one out of spare parts should you really one one... So, I just relaxed and went on with my business. Plenty of other, more meaningful, projects to take on!
I was a victim of FOMO recently. DLT training pm2 in m390, red g10. Their server went down at the time it was due to be released. I spent an hour and a half refreshing the page until I managed to get one.
@@BetaBuxDelux I'd say so. Beautiful knife. I find that the spyderco sprint run qc is just a step above their regular offerings. Knife came drop shut smooth and extremely sharp.
Thanks for sharing Nick! You are such a nice and sincere dude!! Would love to meet you one day and geek out on knives! I am from Indonesia and no one seems to have this hobby
I'm not the biggest fan of blue watches but that Casio is nice! I kind of wish companies would regularly make their knives in a variety of steels. I would be a lot more inclined to buy a $200-300 Spyderco if they came in something better than s30v.
Oher aproach is to ask someone to give you his/her honest opinion about what you are about to purchase without telling them it is a limited edition article or its price....I did this with the Casio Oceanus OCW-S5000C-1AJF ....I asked my son who owns the first titanium one his opinion about it....he surprisingly said "Dad...I really like mine much more....."
I'm fairly gifted at rejecting fomo. Take the recent lil native sprint run. I passed after considering the only real reason I wanted it was for the steel and compression lock. The size was way to small for me and long term I knew I wouldnt carry it.
I am in both camps. I hate them, but at the same time when you get one, it feels kind of great knowing you having something "special". I know that feeling is kind of arbitrary, but I can't help feeling it lol. I mean when the 777 was showcased, it was love at first sight. The composite damascus and CF sub frame was a beautiful thing. It was expensive, so I even put aside money every month for it. I had a set of tabs of various knife sites that I would refresh multiple times daily. And after months of doing that [and the drama]. I couldn't get one, while some had like 7 of them. It sucks, and I invested so much time in anticipation, that I still feel a little crappy to this day lol.
With Giant Mouse, not only are the regular versions limited to 300, there are only 100 of the "pirate" versions. Then you have the numbered first runs, and the coins...
I've had to go to therapy for years because as a child, I didn't have X. All my friends had X. They loved their X's. But I only had Y, it's all my parents would let me get. They told me that Y was just as good as X, but it wasn't. Y only had one leg, and kept falling over. I hated it, and I complained. My parents said in no uncertain terms that I couldn't have X. So I'd ask why. And they'd say, _that's right!_ Hence, the therapy.
My biggest issue with this phenomenon is that limited editions are generally rather expensive. When you’re tight on money, you can’t afford to buy right away. No matter how much you want that particular thing. This means the company misses out on an almost guaranteed purchase if that item would’ve been available down the road.
Hahah...it goes on all the time and not just with knives. Thanks for the reminder. I like to think I collect knives but that to is part of what you are talking about. If I am a collector of knives how can I pass up a limited addition knife. Don’t I need all knives that few others have?
Busse Combat knives and Spyderco use this too much. I freaked wanting HAP 40, actually did get my favorite model in it and stopped freaking. Delica Wharncliffe variant. I have plenty of folders. Buying fixed blades for steel is fussy. Design counts, keeping it sharp. Thats more than enough for a user. I came here from Cedric and Ada's video of two days ago shaved head and sold my knives.
I own 3 knives, one is edc and because I live in Asia, 2 are back ups. The only reason I have 3 is the price was excellent and I was replacing a lost edc.
The way I looked at the hype for the para 3 in maxamet was that I wanted it but didn't want to jump to quick but I knew I wanted it they were still around weeks after all the hype and sellouts but couldn't be happier with it my purchase
I get "fomo" constantly with my knife collecting. Sprint runs are especially bad, but I guess that's the marketing psychology doing it's job. However a perpetual lack of funds is a limiting factor for me and one which I'm in a way thankful for
Thanks for this Nick. I couldn't agree more. I really wish Spyderco would release another Bowie... I want one, but don't want to spend 400-500 dollars on it.
Nick I think you’re looking at this all wrong. The fact that the knife is an exclusive limited run means you can purchase it try it out and sell it and at least get your money back. It’s a win-win. I like it and I hope it continues. I do not care for the people who buy knives just with the intention of selling them but that’s just a free market we can’t stop that.
Yes, i was fomo about my acquisition of the LM wave. Just bought it around July 2019 right after I found one in an online store. Because i’m new to the multi tool world, I want a wave but i just hate the + in the name so i didn’t buy any wave+ and hope to see the prior version and i did. The only reason i don’t pick the Wave+ is only because the name has the + in it. 😂
@@NickShabazz I can already tell, its going to start out slow, just like my knife collection. Ill justify it by only letting myself buy watches in the $100 price range, and within a few months ill be a full blown addict.
All those marketing schemes provides just as much, as when something from the factory is labeled "collectors edition". Nothing made out as for collectors is actually for collectors.
You know what really makes it bad? The secondary market... The Shaman is a beautiful example. I’ve been wanting one for months now. I missed the z-wear sprint (the one I realllyy wanted) because i was on a fly fishing trip and frankly, had other priorities. I refuse to pay $400 for a $220 knife on the secondary market. Fuck that...and let’s be honest....who’s buying at these insane prices? It must be somebody. It’s gotten so bad with the Shaman that you’re hard pressed to find *any* plain edge model out there for under $300. They’re just not in stock anywhere. Two things keep you on the straight and narrow. Patience and impulse control. The secondary market is DIRECTLY responsible for this type of thing in certain cases. These people buy em up (sometimes with bots), jack up the price and who gets screwed? We have the power to change this, people. You can’t just keep asking for more every time you get fucked over. At a certain point, it becomes your own fault.
Another reason why I work with custom makers and get on list. I’ll get what I want and it’ll be unique to the world I own over 30 fixed blades and 90% are custom and their sheaths I use them without concern and have respect for the tool that they are I do have safe queens but only 2 The pocket jewelry that are folder knives have their roll I own and rotate my same 3 for 4 years. Rat2 aus8 removed clip Pm2 for when I’m needing that extra something And my skeletool cx when I do yard work, run my rc truck, anything that needs tinkering. None of these are jewelry. Always carry a fixed blade along as my primary. Last yr I found my all purpose fixed blade. Neck carry and in pocket Mike Wallace Wallace Edged Tools Field Mouse cpm154 Yellow Hawk Custom Kydex I stay watching the folder reviewers cause I get it. I do one day want to have a very concentrated set of folders that gives me joy.
But then you regret missing out when you could have made the purchase. It happened to me when I opted not to purchase the Rolex "Hulk" when I had the opportunity. I regret it every day now.
Ok, I get the Limited Edition stuff..I collect knives..what about going after discontinued items..ie, I found a Sage 2 Ti still on Walmart’s stock so I bought it..
Some of my fellow knife addicts mis-interpreted what I said about Spyderco and Wal!Mart..I didn’t go into my local store to buy my Sage 2 Titanium...I bought it on Walmart.com. AND I do believe there are still a couple left at $209...not bad for an out of stock discontinued item
I got fomo-ed once (well not once) in a positive way. I was at a flea market and i saw a fixed blade that i just recently heared about on youtube. It was the freakin Puma White Hunter. And it was the equivalent of freakin $20 (otherwise $350 new). I got instant fomo, but i have thought about it for as long as we ate at pizza hut with my so. But right after that i went back and i just put my hand on it like a freakin owl, with the intention of rather dying than letting go. So that was a positive fomo which i don't regret till today. But of course i have spent a lo-o-ot on actual useless things out of fomo (like top of the line things which i did not use after all)
I feel like there have to be more than 300-500 super rich knife people on earth that will buy every decent knife that comes out just for the hell of it. Then there have to be 10x that number who will buy every decent knife in limited supplies just to try and up sell it the next month.
the think that i find so disturbingly lacking in this video is the lack of exceptions to the rule Nick is pointing out. yes it does suck to fall prey to the limited edition tactic but i feel there should be a solid exception for individual makers that do knife making as more of a hobby or can only afford to make a certain number of knives depending on material, time and ability available to them. i would say guys like Ekim and John Graham fall under this category. its not like are intentionally making a limited number of knives but very often they are just going forward making a new designs and never looking back to recreating older models thus pretty much making them a limited run
Amen! Double amen! It takes me months to decide to pull the trigger on a knife, months, and then 60% of the time it’s unavailable. 60 freaking %. It’s like hearing the doorbell ring half way through sex 😡
I hate that shit. It’s so stupid because they make something awesome that “everyone” wants and could sell 10,000 but no, they only make 1000 and so make 90% LESS than they would have made. As long as they are selling ‘em like hot cakes they should KEEP MAKING THEM! Imagine if Apple was like “Well, we are only going to make 10,000 iPhone Xs next year so even though we can sell millions we want it to be special. More income? We aren’t interested.” The shareholders would love that. The manufacturers should have FOMO lots of money 💰. Idiots.

When I saw TOPS Knives Pathfinder school knife was honorably discharged- discontinued. I had a twinge
You really got in my head with this video!
I feel good reading your example because I snagged that one due to FOMO and I don't regret it one bit. Love it.
@@TECHFIGHTER I had to hunt for it on eBay :/ There's a couple other models I have my eye on, but considering how many more knives I have than I need, I may have to let them slide. The urge to get the hundred pacer when it's on closeout will be strong
@@1fareast14 HUNDRED PACER was a no-brainer for me. It is a better design for me n I LOVE it! Very satisfying knife
Great video I am guilty of this limited runs get me for sure plays right into my knife addiction
I spent an hour and a half refreshing the page until I managed to get one.
mr. jinks Worth it?
Great content nick!!! Didn’t think about that until now!! It’s really sad, if they have a good product people just keep buying it anyway!!!
Their “ACE” line is unlimited, and seems to be their focus these days, which I very much appreciate
@@NickShabazz True. Any plans on reviewing the Biblio? It had a rabid following in the GM community.
Nick I do have one regret I didnt buy the 20cv tan para 2 that dlt had at blade they were 130 without boxes and I didnt get back to buy one :(
Ahh...I feel you. They were sweet
Hey Nick. Seriously good video. Thank you helped me. One other thought > do you collect other things besides watches and knives... you like movies?
Hahah...it goes on all the time and not just with knives. Thanks for the reminder. I like to think I collect knives but that to is part of what you are talking about. If I am a collector of knives how can I pass up a limited addition knife. Don’t I need all knives that few others have?
True stories.. I just fomoed myself into buying a creely mako and a goodblue r 615 back to back. Is going to take 3 paychecks to re stabilize
10:27 - kinda sums it up...
Hey nick, ever get that sk23 from Kevin? Just wondering. Keep up the good work.
Thanks
I did, yes. Ended up moving it along, but he delivered what I ordered.
Christian Duke It is an amazing knife, but the secondary market prices are ridiculous.
I'm currently experiencing a bad case of FOMO in regard to the discontinued ZT 0920.
It's an amazing piece. Have it in my collection and it's one of the few I could never part with.
Brilliant
This explains a lot about my behaviour. Thanks mate 👍🏼
I think Nick just wants to reduce the number of people competing with him to get those limited edition Spydercos.
Fantastic vid, Mr Nick;)
Like anything else in life - it's easy to forget what you've got next to what you yearn for.....
Duuuuuuuude that Oceanus is absolutely beautiful. I think you may have awoken something inside me with that thing....
DO NOT GET INTO WATCHES.
LOVE this video
I only fomo on stuff thats being discounted and discontinued after many years on the market at full price. 😂🤣
I’ll get what I want and it’ll be unique to the world
I own over 30 fixed blades and 90% are custom and their sheaths
I use them without concern and have respect for the tool that they are
I do have safe queens but only 2
The pocket jewelry that are folder knives have their roll
I own and rotate my same 3 for 4 years. Rat2 aus8 removed clip
Pm2 for when I’m needing that extra something
And my skeletool cx when I do yard work, run my rc truck, anything that needs tinkering. None of these are jewelry.
Always carry a fixed blade along as my primary. Last yr I found my all purpose fixed blade. Neck carry and in pocket
Mike Wallace Wallace Edged Tools Field Mouse cpm154 Yellow Hawk Custom Kydex
I stay watching the folder reviewers cause I get it.
I do one day want to have a very concentrated set of folders that gives me joy.
Cool comment. I relate to what you said. Feeling a change in the wind
The best cure for FOMO is to actually miss out and find out how unimportant it is
But then you regret missing out when you could have made the purchase. It happened to me when I opted not to purchase the Rolex "Hulk" when I had the opportunity. I regret it every day now.
Ok, I get the Limited Edition stuff..I collect knives..what about going after discontinued items..ie, I found a Sage 2 Ti still on Walmart’s stock so I bought it..
what!!!!! spyderco at walmart!!!!! i need to move
Wal-Mart has tons of Spyderco, and , Kershaw’s and the other big boys
@@Foxrock321 not where im at, they've got Gerber and gun brand knives. its rough
Nice video !! Thanks
Very rational Nick, good job. 👍
"Only one item left in stock AND ITS IN 3 PEOPLE'S CARTS"
OMG I BETTER HURRY
I got fomo-ed once (well not once) in a positive way. I was at a flea market and i saw a fixed blade that i just recently heared about on youtube. It was the freakin Puma White Hunter. And it was the equivalent of freakin $20 (otherwise $350 new). I got instant fomo, but i have thought about it for as long as we ate at pizza hut with my so. But right after that i went back and i just put my hand on it like a freakin owl, with the intention of rather dying than letting go. So that was a positive fomo which i don't regret till today.
But of course i have spent a lo-o-ot on actual useless things out of fomo (like top of the line things which i did not use after all)
Like fear of missing out on the $600 AD-15?
I agree, most knives and watches etc I order have plenty in stock. 😀
I bought a Gerber Center Drive: FO MO!!! What ever... It's a heavy hunk of steel! IMHO
Oh no! Don't get FOMO'd! Great topic video!
This is the difference between custom and production. If you can’t make hundreds, I get it. But if you can, and choose not to... FOMO
I missed too many BRS balisongs. I fear I’ll miss it again.
I agree totally , ie 15v fomo
That Casio is beautiful.
Idiots.
