I'm 79 years old and this song, "Mecca", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", "Only Love can Break a Heart" and others of his have been my favorites for something like 60 years now. His voice had a very special quality to it and his songs always related a message that people could feel and relate to. God Bless him.
I'm 74 and lucky to be here I died on the operating table last year but they brought me back many thanks to the people who stuck with it so I'm still her in her arms after 52 years.
Mecca, with the new schottisch woke law, he would be in jail for adultery. Fucking great song lyrics&sound would make mo the pedo false profet think twice . Funny thing mo was a mix and the camel was his best friend. He was left behind and that why he had those attacks & deliriums. Whats now called epilepsie.
In August of 1967 I saw this artist in concert in my hometown of Va. Beach, Va. at the VA. Beach Dome. That was a small venue where they had 2,000 chairs all lined from side to side starting not far from the stage going to the back of the Dome. Giant fans were at the back of the Dome to blow the hot air around as there was no A/C. It was hot in there but nobody cared. What a performer! A hand pulled the curtain to one side at the left side of the stage and Pitney came out in a black suit, white shirt and a black tie. He had a 10 piece band in back of him. Hundreds rushed the stage with their flash cameras. He sounded exactly like his records. Now those were the days when concerts were worth going to. It was worth every minute!
I moved to Va. Beach area in July of '75 and the Dome was still there. Gone now of course. Never saw a concert there. Heard of many great people performed there...
Before Gene Pitney performed, there were 3 acts before him. It was an amazing show. One of the acts on stage was The Easybeats from England. I don't think many people remember them. Their only hit record was "Friday on my mind". Yes, they had Beatle haircuts. They were good!
Gene was a musical phenomenon in Australia in the 60's and 70's, charting with hit after hit after hit. Big favourite of mine , then as a teenager and still now. If there's a heaven I hope he's there, and still singing 😊
The Big O is probably my ALL-TIME FAV singer! I'm not as familiar with Gene Pitney, but he is certainly a great singer also! This song gives me chills!
That era was great for the really wonderful singers in this genre as well as others like Motown, Country and Western - always a wide variety of really talented singers and musicians no matter what you were listening to. Today? If you like a lot of low quality music with profanity all over the place and few real stars - that's what we have now. Sad!
Every generation has it's brilliant and mediocre music, we tend to remember the good songs because the rest have faded. There is something good to be found in every generation if you look for it.
Gene had an amazing ability to story tell in all his songs. This is my fave of all time simply because of how he tells the story. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice, first time I was age 7 and then 28. I shook his hand at end of show and sang all the lyrics from front row. I will never forget, he is a legend and there’s no one else like him…ever.

A complete story in 3 minutes. Unique voice, brilliant music, pithy lyrics. A collaboration of the combined genius of Pitney, Bacharach and David. Perfect.
@@nickjohns It's a good story but also a bad story, because it's about something that a reckless guy did against his wife or partner. Eg, he was not too far away from getting back home to her and he'd seen another woman on the way who he wanted to run off with. And if he's like that (that reckless & unreliable) then he will do it again and again, regardless of who gets hurt and leaving a trail of misery in his wake. I have herd this song many years ago and always wondered whether Gene was maybe singing a true story about himself and something he might've done - or maybe he made it all up just as as lyrics for a song. I have no idea. I only ever herd 2 things about this guy - 1, he was a famous singer, and the other............. well.
There's nothing wrong with liking songs that came out before your time. I was born in 1971, and I've just found out that Gene Pitney's "24 Hours From Tulsa" peaked at No. 5 in Britain at the start of 1964
I find many teenagers do like some of the older songs when they take the time to listen to properly they just don't like admitting it to their friends and piers for fear of embarrassment but listen to them in private I caught my own son doing it lol. The new songs you like today will be called oldies soon enough.
Reminds me of my childhood, even though it completely out dates me, I'm almost 30. Fond memories of my mother and father listening to 50s and 60s music. They don't make music like this anymore and it saddens mebl greatly. Still an absolute classic here in 2019...I'll definitely pass this onto my children and itll be going strong in 2030!!!
sorry kids of today.....this is musik. A timeless masterpiece for a bygone epoch with rebellion, imagination and fantasy.Nothing can bring back memories better, than a song which he was once connected with.
I had occasion to first visit Tulsa in June 2001 and now heading back next week (May 2022), and find I cannot get enough of again hearing this song. It gets better with every playing.
I've read the BIO, and am a Rockville native, know his "haunts", and feel to have traveled down the same path many years ago after GP....what an honor it is to be after the same trail as he was...only I cannot sing as wonderfully as he did...GOD rest his soul.
Sadly the late great Gene Pitney passed away in my home town of Cardiff South Wales on April 5th 2005 aged just 66 my wife and I had been to see him the night before taken too soon RIP
I saw Gene back in 1968 in Wisconsin. The concert was in a small circus tent. No seats. Standing only. I saw him in the doorway of the tent while The Happenings were performing on stage. He nodded when I looked at him. Huge crush on Gene. That little nod meant so much to me.
What a beautiful song. It tells a story and Gene Pitney tells it so well with his amazing and unique voice. How I miss that special era when we had wonderful music like this.
One of my old army buddies introduced me to his music a few months back. She used to listen to him with her grandmother as a kid. Man had I been missing out. By far this is my favorite song he does. Absolutely love it!
What a beautiful classic song from one of the greatest singers of my generation. I grew up in the 60s and remember all of Gene Pitney's music. Real, timeless music that will live forever. How do I know that? Because it's August 22, 2022 and people are STILL listening to this awesome song 👍. Almost 60 years later and people are still listening to it. Now THAT'S staying power.

Gene pitney really had a great unique voice. He put so much into his songs along with powerful emotion. The contact between him and his audiences was so close...
This was the very first song i sang to an audience at our local dance hall when i was 17 years old. This experience made me realise that my life was to be music and now, 58 years later, i have no regrets. I named my second son Gene and eventually i did get to meet Gene Pitney. He had heard and wanted to meet an Australian/Italian guy who sang his songs almost as well as he did. Gene Pitney was unique. He appealed to both young and old. It's a shame he died so young, but he lived a fulfilled life doing what he loved most - giving people so much enjoyment with his songs.
The song lyric, "......and I held her charms." Popped into my head a couple days ago and I just COULDN'T remember it! So I looked it up and here he is. Thank you for this Mike! ~ And I'll tell you back then some of these lyrics must have pushed the censors to the limit. May he continue to entertain the Angels in Heaven.❤
I was five when this came out. 29 years later I saw him at Warwick Arts Centre; I was hugely pregnant, but I struggled to the front to shake his hand and he smiled at me. I always wanted to dance to this song with him singing.... not quite, but almost. Fab song and wonderful voice.
As an eighteen year old I was spellbound at how Gene ALWAYS was immaculately turned out, even catching him "on the hop" in his hotel suite. He inspired me to start shopping in Savile Row and Harrods rather than Lord John in Carnaby Street. Always so very kind to a kid from the record company. Thanks Mr. Pitney.
