Per Wikipedia “Cilla Black, interviewed for that Great Performances telecast, expressed her awareness of Warwick's disenchantment: "It was a No. 1; Dionne was dead choked and she's never forgiven me to this day." It was in fact Burt Bacharach himself who backed Cilla to record this song for a British release, after Dionne Warwick had a hit in America with it.[24] "At one point it looked as if Shirley Bassey would record the song...but The Beatles producer George Martin suggested Cilla and I agreed immediately. It was late in 1963 and Liverpool was taking over popular music with some great songs and great people. There was an awareness that things would never be quite the same again-and Cilla Black was part of that." I think Cilla reflected that kind of ability. She understood the song and she had a kind of long-term stickability, which is so very hard to achieve in this business."

The melody is so lyrical, so melancholy, from the piano's plaintive bass notes resembling heart beats, to the haunting horn solo and lush orchestration, and Cilla's voice brimming with angst and raw emotion. I loved how Cilla always sang full out with every ounce of her being - "left her heart on the stage" (like Piaf, Sinatra...all the Great Ones). She sang from the heart and you felt her every emotion. She had such power and versatility in her voice, one moment belting it out to the rafters...and the next trilling as delicately as a bird. She was an AMAZING vocalist, one of the best.

For all the mind-blowing/working-without-a-net brilliance of this live performance, I can't believe no on has commented on the fact that the man conducting the orchestra -- the one to whom she gives that incredibly understated curtsey at the end -- is none other than George Martin, himself, who discovered Ms. Black and who, in addition to producing the Beatles, at the time was her producer as well.
There’s another clip of this session where she sings „You're My World“ and George Martin is mentioned there several times. And YES, her curtsey, but also the way they bow to each other, is adorable. I do love this performance, listening to it ever and ever again!
This song actually pin points an era in my life. Young teen in the last couple.of years of high school. Discovering males, Twiggy, wearing mini skirts, huge, black eyelashes and makeup, friends and fun, great music, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, Cilla & Dusty Springfield, magical.

I agree with everything you wrote, but one issue more to mention. Another great song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Cilla doesn't just sing the songs, she acts them. Hugely underrated. Deserves to be rediscovered in these sad, hard times we live in. Raw emotion will see us through, just like it does the girl in Cilla's songs.

I can’t think of a performer, artists or conductor capable of producing this sound live today without all the tech gadgets, etc….fantastic!
i can think of 20
There's always one. Dionne Warwick fans are so defensive lol
Cilla was pure class, now she’s a friend up in heaven seeing as Gerry marsden has passed on, two famous Liverpool legends together again for all time
I love the emotion in her voice. Love her ❤
You got my vote!
I cant agree with you more, they were great.
With John Lennon, George Harrison and Ken Dodd!
Also John Lennon & George Harrison sing with her there. Old friends
This is just spectacular. No matter what your musical taste is.
Im speechless. I knew she was good but.... Just such a star with a supreme quality.
I fell in love with this song from movie last night in solo
From an age when pure talent was enough to get noticed. No auto tune, no airbrushed, plastic fakery.
A magical decade.
that's because technology is improving and the decade wasn't good. You like the music genre. That's all.
@@mochaivory8716 The problem is that technology is improving at the expense of talent !
@@mochaivory8716 You mean no lip sync
That my great great auntie
Yes and so many good songs.
What a voice ❤
I first heard a few years ago. Tremendous talent 😊
@@rebeccarambo2893This song was written by Bert Baccarat and available for any singer to record. Cilla had an outstanding voice and this was an amazing performance. Dionne was a terrific singer too. And my bubble's completely intact. I'm sure you had no intention of bursting anybody's bubble. Did you?
Same here, I had an old radio each night I would listen to. Wolfman Jack was my favorite dj.
This song showcases the range and complexity of her voice.
I'm 62 And still remember this song as a Wee Boy . The good old days. Thanks Pet X
Cilla had a set of pipes on her like nobody's business!
Cilla's pipes here were beyond. Astounding live performance which is what caught Bacharach's attention. The likes of Cilla won't be seen again.
Wow. She can really belt a song out. Wonderful performance.
I agree with everything you wrote, but one issue more to mention. Another great song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. They were often discribed as the American Songwriting Partnership, but for more than 10 years they earned their royalties mainly in UK, they had 6 Nr. 1 songs in UK, before they became famous in the States.
Helmut from Germany
Cilla back in the day, we all loved you. We all still do. Love in the next life xxx
You know a singer’s good when you can’t hear them drawing breath, even when they’re really belting it out.
Thank you burt for all your wonderful songs. I listened to these as a little boy in the back of my dad's car. Good times.
With a voice like that, and hearing her now (Dec. 2020), I honestly wonder why she did not get more airplay, here in the states. Damn, what a voice she had!!! When I first heard her a few years back, I was truly amazed.....hell, I still am! RIP Cilla Black!!!
Possibly the reason why she didn't get more airplay is that in her prime there was just so much competition.
So much talent came out of Liverpool
OUR CILA WAS AND STILL UNIQUE TO THIS DAY!!! LEGENDARY!!!
I never appreciated Cilla's musical talent as I grew up only knowing her as a tv presenter...this is just bloody genius. Love her voice.
And remember all Irish love ❤ you constanceMarkiewicz. And people of good will worldly suffragette and Irish revolutionary .and hero of the working class 🙌 sleep well pet
@@colonisedtartan9539 still alive. 😆
Love Cilla ,what a voice . Love when these great artists have an orchestra behind them 👏 👌
Exactly, such a rousing performance.
Cilla was an amazing singer amazing personality used 2 love her on blind date
Yeah no one would ever have thought a woman like her so small would have such a commanding voice. Getting to those high notes without straining.
I lived in London for a year in 1964-5 and watched Top Of The Pops and Ready, Steady Go, two music programs and Cilla was massively popular, her and Sandy Shaw were the It girls of the time. I believe BBC did not allow lip syncing and you really had to deliver in person.
This is my all time favourite song, it gives me goose bumps, Sheridan Smith also sang it brilliantly in the drama Cilla.
Bert Bacharach song. The master and what a performance by Cilla. Both, sadly now missed. A different age.
One of the best performances EVER. Priscilla White RIP. You were a great ❤
This is truly an amazing performance from an incredible singer, Cilla you were and still are a legend. George Martin the Beatles record producer is also doing well conducting the orchestra in the background too........
Yes, I thought that was the great producer / musician conducting too!
Just magic. Goosebumps all over
Nothing like that today
Yüzmeyi de çok seviyorum ,sırf bu şarkılar için yeniden dogsak hayır demiyebilirim
Thank you, Ms. Cilla Black. The perfect voice for the perfect song.
Great singer was Cilla Black, beautiful, powerful voice.
My mum loved this song, she would sing this randomly...RIP ammi!
Love this song so very much and love Cilla's look.. her hair and her nose before surgery... such a professional performance in her voice and the orchestra...
What a gorgeous voice!!! So much good talent back in 60's
Cilla was only 5 years older than me, but she had a wonderful voice. My mother would turn up the radio whenever her songs were broadcasted. She loved her too.
Cilla was an incredibly talented vocalist, which was kind of overlooked when she was the host on TV shows. Wonderful live performance, no trickery, just her and an orchestra…..stunning.
Brings tears to my eyes. It is so emotional.
Goosebumps all over, nothing compares to this as live performances go imho
Cilla doesn't just sing the songs, she acts them. Hugely underrated. Deserves to be rediscovered in these sad, hard times we live in. Raw emotion will see us through, just like it does the girl in Cilla's songs.
Possibly. Have you noticed that all the people you see are showing no emotion at all? I mean ok, it wasn't all OTP like today but not one of those faces was reacting to the music. Strange eh?
@@reic0002 Yes, I definitely *noticed* that these British people showed NO EMOTION to such a GREAT song belted out by Cilla Black !!! They greatly lack appreciation !!! Sad.
😢
@@doloressimpson7456 she was singing to them on camera ? This video is a collection of photographs - where do you mean , rather referring to - I should say.

Amen!
Back when artists used to perform... stage presence.... used to sing live. Pure poetry. Stunning song! RIP Cilla. 💕
And without flashing every bit of their anatomy.
Can't agree more Sufina, the old songs were poetry and much more uplifting than anything written in the last 20 or so years. Cilla didn't get a lot of credit as a singer, but this really shows what a great singer she was. Fortunately I grew up in the 60's; I still think it was the greatest decade for pop music. Unfortunately you can't imagine most of todays "talent" still being around in 10 years let alone having 30/40/50 year careers.
And Sir George Martin conducting, the bow, the curtesy, the epitome of class....
& had a VOICE !
Look how respectful the audience is as well. Now a days 75% of the audience would be looking at their phones while she performed.
❤this n love Cilla singing it. Love her Liverpudlian accent coming thru. Miz White RIP
This voice, artist and song is part of what made the 60;s the greatest music ever.
