Possibly she "passed on" after realizing she had died - not really clear in this story how long people stick around that don't have unfinished business after all.
This scene is just amazing. You can see Toni Collette go from being devastated in thinking that her son is mentally ill to being given irrefutable proof that ghosts are real and death is not the end, all in the course of a few minutes. She shows such an incredible range that it still shocks me she did not win the Oscar for this movie.

This is truly one of the best movie scenes I’ve ever seen after all these years it still holds up. It’s such a beautifully acted and cathartic moment in the movie. When you can see she’s initially reacting with doubt probably thinking her son is insane, only for her to realize he’s telling the truth by him telling her something so deeply personal that only she could ever know. Brilliantly written and acted scene. It makes me tear up every time.
