Some seemingly “boring” colors can look great on the Miata. I have owned 6 Miatas since 2001 and 4 were NDs. I have received way more compliments on my current ‘21 RF Club BBR in Polymetal Grey than my previous Soul Red Crystal soft top, a color that is the signature Mazda color. I sure wish Mazda would bring back the BRG with the Nardi wood package like my ‘01 SE, my first new Miata. GREAT video as always guys! You are my go to source for serious yet entertaining car reviews. I’ve seen them all, some I’ve watched more than once just for the entertainment.
Before our son was born I sold my MX-5 but I'm still watching videos about it. Driving it is therapy, I absolutely agree. Just drive to a nice place, enjoy the ride, enjoy the place and try your best to not want to get right back into the car and drive home. If you're in the market for a fun car, it doesn't get much better than a MX-5. I hope Mazda never messes them up.
Thomas (and James) but mostly Thomas... You clearly love Alfa Romeo to the point where admiration has evolved into* full-on objectification. Especially their classic offerings. Your 'Alfa v Alfa' video sealed that deal. With that being said, have you considered tracking down a _Totem Automobili _*_GT Super_* for the review of a lifetime? Granted it is an extremely rare and expensive coachworks Alfa Romeo. Akin to a _Singer Porsche_ which is another boutique coachbuilder worthy of a dedicated review I might add. Nevertheless, I think this would make for a _glorious_ episode! A truly remarkable experience about a car that very few people even know existed. Even those that trend amongst that level of affluent society. This often tends to be the case with Coachbuilders. If you know - you know... Lastly, I would like to thank _you_ [Throttle House Crew] for your continued dedication to the channel and the car community. Stay classy my friends. *EDITED for grammar.
WOW! That GT Super is a stunning car!!! The world certainly needs more coachbuilders. Not the same cookie-cutter cars we see on a constant basis. Could you imagine if we got rid of SUVs and Crossovers in-favor of station wagons and shooting brakes? In a perfect world where the former does not exist and the latter reigns supreme; I bet we would have some truly unique offerings. Not just your typical Vista Cruiser from 'That 70s Show' or the Griswold Family Station Wagon either. I think we could potentially see some really cool wagons from automakers around the world. Just look at what Ferrari did with the FF. That model surprised the entire world!
Mazda is always so modest with its cars. It can stand to have some more "look at me" characteristics. Bolder colours, more dynamic styling, better marketing! I didn't even know the '24 was a revision year, and I'm a Miata driver!
Sold my ND2 for a C7 Grand Sport and then an E85 Z4M. Never really looked back but watching this vid makes me acknowledge that the Miata is the best new sports call you can buy (for the money).
Fellow z4 owner who’s considering selling it in favor of the ND2. I’ve driven many NC Miata’s and think they are for fun but the M54 in the Z4 is way better. I’m hoping the motor in the NDs is better.
@@webmolgamb Depends on how fast you go, but it is not Supra levels of bad. My exhaust is also around 125db at 8200 RPMs (Cam/Springs/FAB9 Tuning) so wind noise is not really a thing i get too concerned about.
@@webmolgamb I've been driving an RF for about a year now. Chose it mainly because it is my daily driver all year round and in the winter I'm just more comfortable with the hard top. When just driving at city speed, it's not an issue at all, but the wind noise gets pretty bad once you go beyond 70 - 80 kph (no idea what that is in mph - about 45 to 50?). That being said, I got kind of used to it, but there's no question that the soft top is far less noisy with an open roof. With a closed roof the RF feels quieter to me, but I have only ever driven the soft top during a test drive, so I might be off there.
@@webmolgamb I have owned my RF for 4 years and the wind noise has never been something that bothered me. I expect noise when I put the top down... Plus I can hear my Cobalt exhaust even better :) Total Non-issue for me.
Nothing better than engaging cars. I finally got a new enjoyable cruiser yesterday. A 1963 ford falcon futura with a 3 speed dogleg transmission in the floor now instead of on the column. It’s such a vibe car with all the vibrations through the vehicle. It feels solid for being 60 years old.
I have one of these sitting outside my house right now. I got it from the dealership yesterday and will have to return it tomorrow. It's the 1.5 engine not the 2.0, however. It's only got 130hp, but, because of the short gearing, it accelerates quite well. The last 2 seat sports car I owned was a 1972 Porsche 914 with a built engine making 145hp and bilstein suspension. The new Mazda made me remember how much fun these kinds of cars are. I'm 6'1" so the Mazda felt cramped which I was surprised about because the old Porsche had more interior room. Anyway, a really nice car to drive and the fun factor was high driving through the country lanes just outside Warsaw, Poland on a sunny Saturday afternoon and evening with my 17 year old son sitting next to me acting as DJ.
I suspect Porsches have more room because they are rear or mid-rear engine cars that use Macpherson struts rather than a double wishbone suspension setup.
Even my NC 'boat' gets plenty of respect at the track. And with some suspension mods and gradual skill increase, I'm starting to pass some of the other 'slow' cars.
Mazda brought us a new "hue" of cement, but the new "shade" is provided by you guys. I love how you manage to find so many ways to talk $hit about this refresh, knowing damn well that it's _still_ always the answer.
We just got ours a few months ago, and I'm so glad my wife pushed me to agree to get one 😅 It's so much fun to drive! And watching this video just adds validation that we made a great choice ❤
Great video, I love the theatrical add in's ! It's really makes the show more enjoyable and separates you from other car reviews. The camp fire, the dunes, GREAT ! Keep it up.
Sounds like my 2002 S2000 except no VTEC. That car also needed a louder exhaust to better balance with the mechanical clatter of the engine. Would love to see a comparison of these two cars, pick two which are 25 years apart. I bet you would find their personality nearly identical.
In everyday driving I'd imagine the mx5 would feel faster. The S2K doesn't have much pull initially until 6K rpm. There's a good channel called zygrene who compares these kinds of cars, he's reviewed many S2Ks and miatas
@@richboy900 That's true, they are tuned and geared different. Back when the S2000 was new, the hp advantage over it's competitors was huge. Over the years the Miata was blessed with more hp and more capabilities all around. The Miata has [almost] become what the S2000 was back then. In the review there were complaints about how it steers and how the back end misbehaves, eerily similar to discussions about the S2000. Everything put together, there isn't another car closer to the S2000's overall character sold today.
not louder exhuast, just one that makes it sound more clear like a trumpet instead of a fart can sound that it is, like some old 90s natrually aspirated honda sport
@paul6533 There are a few videos of ND series MX-5 vs S2000 with most, from memory, saying the S2000 is a much more raw car with more power, and most liking the dashboard design better. Usually they also say the MX-5 is a much more "daily driver" friendly car for most people, and has the additional tech to make it safer for most people. I will say the S2000 is pretty timeless with its design, and is still solid to this day.
Picked up an '09 Accord coupe last year. Always loved the looks of those model years. It has a 4 cylinder 185 hp engine. It's by no means fast but it is surprisingly quick. It weighs 3400 lbs. Drop a 1000 lbs and yeah, it would rip really good. Weight is such a killer
Just bought a 2024 a few days ago. It's my first time owning/driving a miata. Only thing that I have been able to compare it to in terms of pure driving happiness is a jet ski.
Having owned two modern Mazdas with the command wheel and a bunch of cars with touchscreens, I have to say I just prefer the command wheel over touchscreens. I'm always having to brace my hand in order to operate the touchscreens and that's just not a problem with the command wheels.
Looked at every review on MX5 2024. Yours was the only one that had specific details that are new to this model. Kudos to providing more info than everyone else!
I recently drove a 2017 Mazda MX5 RF GT. Was my first time driving one and it was as Thomas said it was therapy. Throughout the whole drive shifting through the gears. It’s just you and the road I mean for the money it’s a no brainer.
Love the quiet exhaust. The lack of shouty-ness makes it unique. Nothing wrong with quietly having fun, going about your life and allowing others to quietly enjoy theirs.
as a former racer I always wished they would force quiet exhausts especially since we were running restrictor plates anyway. Loud exhausts are dumb. But I did have dumps on my Z06 and it could be fun. You know, to impress all the babes that don't care about cars 😂
I have a Goodwin Racing "Super Q Header Version" exhaust. It is just as quiet as stock when cruising, but has a little more sporty burble at idle and slightly louder/throatier at full throttle and high RPM. IMO, that is the exhaust the Miata should ship with. Still very livable, but actually feels like it belongs on a sports car.
@@jealnoslyn That's sweet brother. But also, this area here in the comments, is for people who like quiet exhausts. At all RPM. We don't want it louder. At all. Glad you like yours though.
Fun fact: the original infotainment screen is 0.5cm (13/64") taller then the new one and sits a bit closer so the reversing screen is actually easier to see despite the lower resolution. Doesn't look as nice of course but at least that's some consolation. Ace review though Thomas & James! Thanks for being pretty much the only reviewers (including in written form) to explain what the new diff does properly 👍
A lot of the knowledge I have about how different parts of cars work I learned by reading the article Dave Coleman wrote when he worked at Sport Compact Car. I remember "The Dave Point" too.
All of me at 6'4" and 230 lbs wants this car so bad. If only I were about a foot shorter and at least 50 lbs lighter it would be sitting in my driveway now.
Idk bro go sit in one, my buddy is 6'4 and he drove a mini Cooper s (that thing drove like a bat out of hell), and he fit in that small ass car no problem. Also maybe try a convertible 😂😂
The Master MX5. Suits it lol. It's been one of the be the best handling cars for 30 years and Mazda has demonstrated over the years that it can be the benchmark wherever it focuses... So MASTER MIATA IT IS lol
181 hp is ideal. The car is light, so it feels fast. But at 181 hp, you get to actually enjoy the car at its full power without concern for the law. Even when the speed limit is low. Not having to baby the gas pedal to avoid wrapping around a tree or losing your license is awesome for the driving experience this car provides.
Wish they did a BRG with a tan interior. James is a gonna be the butt of many jokes going forward as well as being a yardstick for seat size testing "even James from Throttle House says these seats are too small".
As a 6’ 3” guy that used to own a Mazdaspeed, I was in love with the car and mad at my ancestors for being tall. Although, I learned taking the drivers seat out and sitting on the floor I was perfectly placed in the car. Didn’t actually drive like that, obviously, since there’s no seatbelt or cushioning. But for that brief moment I was vacuuming the interior, I actually fit in my Miata like a hand in a glove.
Agree on the colours thing, wish there was a nice green and also yellow (like engineering explained's wrap). Other than that it's a great car, I enjoy mine 💯

@@dielaughing73 They offer Deep Crystal Blue Mica after stopping to offer that Eternal Blue here in Canada but only with the highest tier trim package gets it, and oddly enough no extra cost for that color selection unlike all the other colors except black. Most people are not getting it as it pushes $50k Canadian, and you can get the next tier down that still has all the performance options for $40k instead. It sucks since I would pick up a Miata in the middle tier in that blue if I had the choice, even if I had to pay extra for the paint.
I own a Nd1 soul red, soft top, 2.0. When i bought it used, just after covid, i thought to have it a few years and flip it. Now I could sell it for a 20-30% increase of what i paid and hell no, its not going anywhere. My little future classic is staying btw, really felt the comment about the line alarm light. Probably all of us disabled it. I wish i could update the horrendous infotainment though
If yours doesn't have Android Auto & Apple Carplay you can buy a $100 upgrade. Fitting it takes a couple of hours but it's worth the effort and eventually pays for itself as you no longer need to pay Mazda for sat-nav map updates.
I had a Mk1 (NA) in British Racing Green. Put Kenwood speakers and a combo CD multiplayer and minidisc in it, plus a mohair roof with heated rear window. Drove all over England to a lot of places over the years in that thing, smoked many a joint to some great tunes. Happy memories and a great car. Though without quite a few mod cons and safety features I wouldn't go without now!
Great video I had a 2017 RF loved it to bits and was so unique was also great on the Nürburgring, but what you said about the wind Roar from the RF is so true I heard it from other Enthusiasts before i purchased and just passed it off as them moaning about nothing, but man I wish I bought the soft top, my RF only lasted a little over a year before I swapped it for a BMW 430D Cabrio more of a GT purely because of the Wind Roar sound driving me crazy doing anything over 50MPH its constant. having a few convertibles before I know what is and isn't good wind buffeting and thew RF is just not it, especially if you plan to use it for Long road trips like I did across Europe, seriously no idea how Mazda got that out of a wind tunnel and passed it for production without tweaks. just a word of warning for anyone watching this and thinking about an RF over the soft top certainly something to consider TRUST ME.
Can confirm. I bought the RF because it’s a beautiful car and I’m not much of a convertible guy. I still love the way it looks, but earplugs are a must at highway speeds.
I have a 2018 ND2 GT with an aftermarket Remus 4-tip exhaust. I bought it that way with only 14,000 miles in 2020. I daily drive it on the highway to work, and after once owning an NB, I really appreciate the extra padding in the roof. So with the exhaust, the sound is improved with the top down, and on the highway, the roof improves sound insolation.
This is my first time watching your channel. I really enjoyed the content and I can't stop thinking how much TopGear-inspired your videos are. They remind me of the Holy Trinity of car programs: JC & RH & JM
Had my NA for 33 years - still brings a smile to my face everytime I bring it out of winter storage. It has manual steering curious how that would compare to todays cars
Will you be doing a ‘track’ review-like to see e.g., if the new differential ramp angles are having any noticeable effect when getting closer to limits? Also curious about the new ‘track mode’ for the DSC. At what angle it starts intervening, to what extent and how harshly it engages/disengages etc.?
Next week I'm trading my ND2 19 Club RF BBR for an ND3 24 Club RF both red. Doing a mileage / paint chip reset. I'm actually excited about the new diff. I too have had the complaint of the car being way too tail happy on track. Especially once the tires get a little greasy. You're doing nothing but manage oversteer.
Seems like an aftermarket diff would be a better investment, no? Won't lie, I thought about doing the same, but the $10k delta just doesn't seem worth it for the limited changes. Edit: Just saw the touch screen improvements and I'm thinking about it again 😂
I just picked up my MX5 last week in same spec as your test car, in Soul Red. I also have a 911 and the MX5 has less power but is as much fun to drive as the Porsche. 110% agree with the exhaust, like any new car it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

Yep need that BRG back ❤
Love the polymetal though 👌
Before our son was born I sold my MX-5 but I'm still watching videos about it. Driving it is therapy, I absolutely agree. Just drive to a nice place, enjoy the ride, enjoy the place and try your best to not want to get right back into the car and drive home. If you're in the market for a fun car, it doesn't get much better than a MX-5. I hope Mazda never messes them up.
I also sold my car after I had my son. I’m definitely going to be buying a new one in a few years.
The Z4M is a weapon though, never get rid of it!!! (Current e85 Z4 3.0i owner)
why did you swapped c7 GS to e85 z4m?
Fellow z4 owner who’s considering selling it in favor of the ND2. I’ve driven many NC Miata’s and think they are for fun but the M54 in the Z4 is way better. I’m hoping the motor in the NDs is better.
E85 over the e86?!
I appreciate how humble you both are. We love you tiny bt.
Oh man these videos on Throttle House are just getting so joyful to watch. The quality is really top notch!
true sir,

Is the wind noise on the rf really that bad?

Ford Falcon Futura if i remembered also has 15bhp like 500F.
@@purwantiallan5089 it’s just over 100 from the 170
@@purwantiallan5089 well that’s probably crank so like 75 or something
OMG... The smile on James face as he passes the 'ND3' in 4 SAGAN is priceless
I have more respect for anyone who shows up at a car meet in a miata than any super/hyper car out there. Your favorite cars favorite car.
You guys are so much fun to watch. Only Canadians have that ''je ne sais quoi'' personalities that don't sound constipated or just plain too serious.
We just got ours a few months ago, and I'm so glad my wife pushed me to agree to get one 😅
It's so much fun to drive!
And watching this video just adds validation that we made a great choice ❤
You guys being soft tops makes so much sense and explains the tension between you. Just need to find you a hard bottom i guess.
Btw nice review!
James already said he is a tiny bottom, I think they are good.
😅
LMAO this
I’m relieved to know that James also thinks about the Roman empire
James, your MX-5 looks good. The color and wheels make it look even better.
Looks a lot like my NB2 in crystal blue metallic
yeah, very subtle but sporty yet classy mods. I love it
such a shame mazda doesn't offer any vibrant colours like this from the factory, and i'm saying this as a soul red ND owner
What rims are those?
@@RobinVerhulstZRX7 1997 also has tons of vibrant colours.
James always has a way with words but there were a number of serious gems in this one. Please never change.
This was not a poll. As a 22 year owner, I can say that the sound is similar to a AP1 with stock exhaust. Have a nice day. 😊

I owned a 2016 Grand Touring for 2 years….. drove it up to 52,000 miles. All highway. Super fun. Interior was claustrophobic.
As always - you are the most fun car reviews on UA-cam
Just bought a 2024 a few days ago. It's my first time owning/driving a miata. Only thing that I have been able to compare it to in terms of pure driving happiness is a jet ski.
Always a good day when there’s a new Throttle House video
Having owned two modern Mazdas with the command wheel and a bunch of cars with touchscreens, I have to say I just prefer the command wheel over touchscreens. I'm always having to brace my hand in order to operate the touchscreens and that's just not a problem with the command wheels.
I'm a blue guy. James' Blue, combined with that ivory-esk interior, is fantastic. That's how I'd like it wrapped, too.
Agreed
It sounds like you don't actually own a sports car or even drive for fun.
Mazda took “Don’t fix what isn’t broken” to near perfection.
Mazda always kept those models perfect.
I’m 6’2” and drove the NA for fours years as my daily. People always asked how I fit… You make it work.
Same here, foamectomy and a steering wheel spacer and I’m golden.
I am similar height. I can fit in it but it’s dangerously tight. I couldn’t do it. You are a braver man than I am.
It's not just height. It's torso to leg ratio that is important.
5:13 I am dying seeing James sway from side to side like a ragdoll here. xD
"I'm unflappable."

I might put it on a t-shirt for the gym "I'm unflappable. I can't be flapped."

Great and fun review. Just ordered a 2025!! Freaking excited.
Curious to know if you have tried the NC (and fit). They're also great cars and very underestimated.
Idk bro go sit in one, my buddy is 6'4 and he drove a mini Cooper s (that thing drove like a bat out of hell), and he fit in that small ass car no problem. Also maybe try a convertible 😂😂
I really want one too, but it’s 300hp short…
I'm not nearly as heavy as you but at 6ft3 and 185 I fit perfectly. There's more room than you would think.
6'1" here. Fit fine and there is a bit of room more. Try it out and make sure adjust the seat in multiple positions. You're head might stick out 😅
James sounds like he’s saying Master. Like he’s talking about some dude high on a mountain who makes the perfect budget fun car.
The Master MX5. Suits it lol. It's been one of the be the best handling cars for 30 years and Mazda has demonstrated over the years that it can be the benchmark wherever it focuses... So MASTER MIATA IT IS lol
The Mx-5 and this channel are my therapy. Thanks for great content!
another motoring therapy that Thomas should experience on the street (and track) is the ZC33S Suzuki Swift Sport. Absolute fun car.
Thank you for keeping the i8 head bonk in the new intro.
Wish they did a BRG with a tan interior. James is a gonna be the butt of many jokes going forward as well as being a yardstick for seat size testing "even James from Throttle House says these seats are too small".
That episode was therapy. It’s so nice to hear a review about a car that”s only priority is driving pleasure.
It would look great with a metallic green
@@volvo09 yea metallic green or British racing green with cream/tan seats/interior would be 🔥
RE: Paint... It's like car manufacturers have thought "How can we get EXTRA PROFIT? I know, JUST give it a primer coat, skip the colour coat and then lacquer it! THAT'LL save us a SHED LOAD of money in costs!!" And so, the market gets flooded with ABYSMAL and DULL flat grey cars!!! 😒

The soul red crystal is still one of the best reds I've seen
It reminds me of "candy" paint. A dark metallic green and dark metallic blue with that similar vibrancy would look so awesome.
@@volvo09 I wish they did a green version. That would look sooo good
Eternal Blue is lovely too, though there aren't many in that colour. I'm not sure if they still offer it
@@dielaughing73 They offer Deep Crystal Blue Mica after stopping to offer that Eternal Blue here in Canada but only with the highest tier trim package gets it, and oddly enough no extra cost for that color selection unlike all the other colors except black. Most people are not getting it as it pushes $50k Canadian, and you can get the next tier down that still has all the performance options for $40k instead.
It sucks since I would pick up a Miata in the middle tier in that blue if I had the choice, even if I had to pay extra for the paint.
These guys never fail. They are like a new “Top Gear” team. Some car stuff, some humour- love it 👍🏻
I own a Nd1 soul red, soft top, 2.0. When i bought it used, just after covid, i thought to have it a few years and flip it. Now I could sell it for a 20-30% increase of what i paid and hell no, its not going anywhere. My little future classic is staying
btw, really felt the comment about the line alarm light.
The wind noise isn't bad with the roof on right?
Does the wind buffeting go away if windows are up?

I have a 2018 ND2 GT with an aftermarket Remus 4-tip exhaust. I bought it that way with only 14,000 miles in 2020. I daily drive it on the highway to work, and after once owning an NB, I really appreciate the extra padding in the roof.
So with the exhaust, the sound is improved with the top down, and on the highway, the roof improves sound insolation.

The worst thing I have ever done in life (and I've done some REALLY stupid shit), was selling my ND. I miss it every day. :'(
I made the same mistake 3 years ago by selling my ND1. Missed it so much that I bought an ND2 and I couldn’t be happier
