- I turn 40 today, and instead of spiraling into an existential crisis, I'm naming a movie (or two) from each year of my life that has special meaning to me. And also spiraling into an existential crisis.

Happy birthday. You made me care about box office. I never miss an episode of Charts with Dan. More life to you.
The literal best.
Same!
40 years, 40 films, 40+ minute video! Happy birthday, Dan!
So in a month from now. I'll be turning 42. And yes I have seen alot of these movies myself. I would have to say T2 is definitely my favorite when I turned 10 back in 1991.
What an amazing list. This would be very similar to my own. The fact that you took your love for film and have adapted it into a career is inspiring. Happy 40 Dan.
Completely agree. I need to figure out how to do this as well.
"...it sparked a curiosity in me that I still have to this day." Cut to Jessica Rabbit saying, "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn this way." Nice editing there. But seriously, I'm only 1 year younger than you, Dan, and I'm still kinda surprised how many movies you chose I would choose too for the same reasons. Happy Birthday!
Similarly, albeit two years older. This video is a string of "ooooh *yes!* " moments one after the other. Happy birthday to all of us!
I loved this video, Dan. Your enthusiasm for film is so contagious. I wrote down about 5 movies from this list that I haven't seen yet and am looking forward to watching them someday.
Happy Birthday Dan! I love you and all the passion and positivity you bring to the world and storytelling enthusiasts! I discovered you on Movie Fights close to a decade ago, and you were my fav person to watch back then even though I was a teenager who wasn't experienced enough in film and its history for a lot of your takes back then. But regardless, you pulled me in with your energy and enthusiasm.
My heart swells when you close out your videos with the little thumping over your heart. I may not really know you, and you definitely don't know who I am, but this 26 year old dubs thee her favourite "geriatric millennial".
Happy Birthday!
Thanks so much for the very kind words and for watching for so many years!
Happy Birthday Dan the man
Happy Birthday Dan🎂🎉
Happy Birthday Dan!! What a cool idea for a video…. 26 doesn’t quite have the same ring for this year
Well done, Dan. There are only 3 that you mentioned that I haven't seen, but probably 5-6 that I've seen BECAUSE you recommended them over the years. You continue to be my favorite movie critic. Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday Dan

Happy 40th Birthday Dan
I was born in 1985. Was raised in Southern IL. Dan and I might as well be best friends as this list is composed of so many films that would be on my 40th birthday list (particularly Goldeneye and Glengarry Glen Ross). Happy Birthday Dan, and thank you for all of your hard work.
Happy birthday Dan!!!
Happy birthday, Dan!
Happy Birthday Dan! Life is definitely short a few months after I turned 40 I was diagnosed for Testicular Cancer. I had successful surgery and have the all clear so definitely take care of yourself!
I have few movies I've never seen off your list that I will definitely be checking out soon.
Glad for your healing ❤️
@@heatheraggus7501 Thanks! A close friend of mine was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 5 years ago so we are both I. Agreement that the PSA's to do self exams likely saved both our lives, or limited the spread.
Happy Birthday Dan!!
Happy Birthday, Champ!
Happy Birthday, fellow '83 baby!
Happy Birthday Dan! Thanks for all the videos, best wishes from Sweden.
I think I've seen every single one of these movies except for Shattered Glass and Glengarry Glen Ross. I agree with you on so many of them. This was so nostalgic... That Thing You Do!! I want to go and watch every single one of them again.
I'm your age (some months younger), nice to see a recap of our movie life. I share similar feelings of many of the ones on your list. Thank you.
Happy Birthday Dan! 🎉
Happy Birthday! It’s important to celebrate and acknowledge the milestone birthdays, but every other year you can be 21 and ‘some’ months if you want. The forties are a good decade, though.
Happy birthday. Never knew you and I were so close in age. I also turn 40 this year. I have also been a movie fan my whole life but funny how we think differently about the movies that impacted us the most. You have lots of critically acclaimed movies in the last 20 years and I would have not so critically acclaimed movies. That just says a lot about you have an critic minded film fan and me as a what I enjoy no matter how dumb it may be fan. I think alot of people will agree with you if they have seen the movies. I am excited to discover so many of these films that I’ve never seen from your list. Great job as always and I’ll be watching you til we’re eighty for sure (sounds like a stalker. Not that kind of watching)
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday Dan! My 40th is tomorrow. Hope youve been having a great day!
I was born in ‘97 and Return of the Jedi is STILL the conclusion of Star Wars. End of story.
As an '82 baby, our lists would overlap significantly! Makes me all the happier your channel is out there. A very happy birthday to you and I wish you the best for the year ahead.
Dan, you are my spirit animals and now since i know we are the same age... even more :D great that you bring Portait of lady on fire which is highly under the radar movie and everybody should see it. Heres for another 40 years and then another one!
Happy birthday ! 🎉
Happy Birthday! 🎂
Happy birthday fellow Capricorn! 🎉
Happy Birthday Dan! Enjoy your day!
First of all, Happy birthday Dan. Secondly, I hope you realize that you are the best movie UA-camr to ever Grace the platform. I could listen for hours and I have listen to you talk about movies. Don’t ever stop doing what you love Dan the man.
Being the same age as you, so many of these movies resonate with me. We grew up at a great time for movies.
Happy birthday! 🎉🎉🎉
Great movies for a milestone bday. Happy birthday Dan 🎉🎉
This is my favorite video of yours of all time. Been with you since ScreenJunkies and came over when you started this channel.
I was born in 1984 and we could nearly copy and paste all the films you love until 1996.
There are a few years where I had another big impact on me: (Casino, moonlights, Batman Begins, Inception, EEAO)
Overall though, I will literally use the first half of this video to show my son when he comes of age to see what made his dad fall in love with film.
I follow a number of critics (some you’ve podcasted with) but I 100% share film DNA the most with you.
Keep up the work.
I tell people “I loved movies before it, but Jurassic Park is truly the film that sparked the fire for me”.
❤
Happy BIRTHDAY 🥳..thanks for all the knowledge 🤪
Happy Birthday dude, thanks for the videos over the years
I'm five years older than you but these movies are all the most impactful for me, too. The 90's were a golden age where indie cinema met blockbuster productions, animation, and a beautiful mix of edgy but sincere storytelling. We were lucky to grow up then. Extra points for mentioning "Shattered Glass," a staple of the journalism class I tought in the early OOs
Great video Dan. As someone who turned 40 last year, we pretty much grew up together and nearly every film on this list is what I would also have on mine. The biggest difference would be 1995 - Goldeneye and Toy Story are great, but since this is about films that made an impact then Apollo 13 is the movie that [the very next day] got me to pick out every book I could find in the library about space and space exploration and put me on a path to a career as a planetary scientist.
Great idea. I'm also a big movie addict, and I'll be turning 40 in a year. Your video is inspiring and I'll be following your lead and make my own 40-movie DNA. Happy Birthday Dan
I LOVE Shattered Glass! It's such an underrated movie that nobody ever talks about! As a journalist myself, I've always been a fan of it. My high school journalism teacher showed it to us in class, and one of my journalism professors showed it to my class in college. Happy Birthday Dan!
Happy birthday. Great idea for a video
Happy Birthday!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm significantly younger and have seen less films, but this was a really cool video that gave me a lot of films to add to my watchlist, especially some that I had never even heard of like Glengary Glen Ross and Shattered Glass. It's so cool to see someone's life in film.
Happy birthday Dan!!! You’re still very young dear don’t let growing older get you down.
Happy 40 years.
Happy Birthday, Dan. Like most of us here I met you at SJ. From all the many great people there, to me you were the heart of the channel. Loved everytime you were on MovieFights, always bringing great picks and great arguments. I think the work you do covering the various facets of the entertainment business is remarkable, especially on the box office. In an age of so much desinformation and confusion, we have to support those committed with facts and context, who elevates the discourse and helps record history in a more intelligent way. Adding Dick Tracy, Shattered Glass and That Thing You Do to my watchlist, and cueing in Glengarry Glen Ross. Thanks, man!
I agree with you regarding “Shattered Glass.” Christianson is really good in this. I am also a big admirer of another of director Billy Ray’s films, “Breach,” which features a great performance by Chris Cooper.
What I love about Dan is he's both a fan of popcorn movies and more auteurish stuff, that list even made me discover/remember about some movies I never watched
Happy Birthday 🎉
Happy birthday! I turn 40 in a few months and agree with much of this list. Jurassic Park was life-changing. I watched the show Movie Magic every week to see how these movies were being made.
Dan this made me watch “GlennGarry Glenn Ross” for the first time. Wow. The fact that Jack Lemon didn’t win an Oscar let alone be nominated is absolutely mind boggling. Hope you had an amazing birthday!
Happy birthday, Dan! I got my wife to watch Shattered Glass yesterday and she loved it. Thanks for reminding us what a great film it is!
Happy 40th, Dan!
Thank you for mentioning signs. That truly is one of my favs and most influential movies of my life as well!
heeeey!!! Happy Birthday Dan!!!!!!!!!! I wish you a lifetime of hapiness!!! I hope you accomplish all your projects for this year!!! Keep entertaining us with your movie reviews and thanks for sharing this movie love experience with us!!! God bless you!!! Enjoy your day, movie fights champ!
Happy Birthday Dan!
And as always thank you so very much for the videos.
Happy birthday brother. I turn 31 this Sunday. I loved this exercise and you've inspired me to take time this weekend to do my own retrospective. We share a lot of the same films that impacted us. Alot of it can come down to them hitting just at the right time.
My family brought me to see There Will Be Blood on my 16th birthday. That's a prime example. They were very confused and perhaps concerned that was how I wanted to spend my day but it definitely was a turning point on how I viewed film.
YOU HAD ME WHEN YU SAID "THAT THING YOU DO". ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS
19:07 this movie FUCKED ME UP as a kid! That ending still stays with me all these years later.
Happy birthday Dan! 🎂 🥳 wishing you all the best bro
Happy Birthday Dan! I love how you talk about movies.
Happy birthday
Brilliant brilliant list, I am 43 yo and most of these esp the earlier years, were mine growing up, such a relatable list, and a few recommendations of movies I've not seen that I will now add to my '' films to check out'' list, cheers Dan, great video, happy belated birthday. 👍😁
Happy Birthday Dan, Wishing You All The Love, Happiness, Peace & Prosperity in Your Life Ahead. I Pray You Get More & More Success Every Year & Keep Loving Movies Till The End. Once Again Wish You Amazing Happy Birthday.
Happy happy happy birthday to you Dan!!! Hope you had a beautiful and wonderful day!!! 🙂👍
Aw, happy birthday! I miss the movie trivia schmoedown so much!
And I turned 40 myself last September. Cool.
Happy Birthday! I always liked the quote “40 is the old age of youth and 50 is the youth of old age”. 👍🏻
Welcome to the 40s Dan! Happy Birthday!
Great and interesting list! We have very similar tastes in movies.
Great video! Fellow ‘83 kid here and I totally appreciate this video and your channel
I'm 38 and can very much relate to all this. Movies like Aliens, Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park were the most impressive to me. Later I learned Stan Winston was associated with all those movies. What a brilliant time it was. I'm also glad that I was underaged when I saw these movies. The greater the impact. Getting into the cinema for Jurassic Park at age 9 was no issue. It was the only movie ever to get me on the edge of my seat, eyes and mouth wide open!
Thanks for sharing your excitement and passion for movies!
The happiest of happy birthdays to you Dan! I'll be turning 40 this year too. Wishing you all the best. Love your content!
Happy Birthday, Dan!! Welcome to the 40 club (I just joined in December).
Happy Birthday Dan, I turn 40 in a couple months and have been enthralled with cinema since I was a kid. A lot of the movies mentioned help to shape my life as well, and I have had some similar experiences with some of these same films. Side note, My mom loves to tell the story of taking me with her and my bothers to see Jedi when I was 2 months old and I was so happy seeing Jabba and then slept through the rest of the film, so jedi holds a soft spot in my heart. One difference was I was able to see a lot of the R- rated movies when they came out as my parents were ok with most of them. I've enjoyed your reflections on movies since your screen junkies days as I feel like we have had similar experiences with and tastes in movies. Great video and made me immediately go back to rewatch That Thing You Do as I haven't seen it in a while., I almost forgot to add that I had watched Shattered Glass of your recommendation years back and it was a fantastic movie. Thanks for that.
Happy birthday, Dan! Couple days apart from my birthday 😊... Let this year be happy and prosper and let it bring you only the best new things. Appreciate your knowledge, keep doing what you do! Hugs from "bad bad Russia"
What a great list. I'm also getting 40 later this year, so I grew up with a lot of these movies as well. There are only a few of them I haven't seen. Shattered Glass, for instance, has been on the to-watch list since you mentioned it in another video defending Hayden Christensen acting a long time ago
P.s. Happy birthday yesterday
This was fantastic. I never comment Dan, but you are by far my favorite critical voice when it comes to movies. Happy birthday and thanks for all the great work!
happy birthday! I punched the air at your 1999 pick, so many amazing movies that year but Being John Malkovich is in my top 10 films of all time, this was such a fun video and i found myself agreeing time and time again, excellent taste!
Best of the best. Happy Birthday Dan! My spiritual brother for love of movies.
Happy birthday Dan! Thanks for the gift!
Happy happy happy birthday!!! 🥳🥳🥳 I just turned 40 in December and it's great! 😜
In 1999 my high school band went to London. The boat from GoldenEye was on a tour.... I touched it real fast and felt awesome.... My buddy touched it right after and set off the alarm.
Happy birthday Dan!!! As someone whose never met you in person, You've still been able to supply me with laughs, great insight, and genuine optimism. I hope you and Mara have a wonderful day!!
Botanicus!!
