Dan Barrett is an unbelievably underrated artist
I don't think that he is underrated, critics love him, his art had cultural impact in industry after deathconsciousness and he has pretty big fanbase, his music just too far from mainstream by obvious reasons, which is not bad thing
Real life Giles Corey is so morbidly fascinating. Just imagining him in prison contemplating which way he would die.. And he chose the slow torturous death over the quick and relatively clean hanging. There's something insane and beautiful about it.
"I know Giles Corey refused to be humane. Refused to pretend. Refused to say, “Everything is all right; this is all part of everything that happens; I accept what happens to us, and I will take part in it.” He was not executed. He made them murder him. He made it ugly. Made them see it for what it was. Stripped them of their disguises. Made them real to themselves. Let everyone see. Called everyone around." -Dan Barrett
It was so badass. Another part of why he did exactly that, is because he wanted his farm to go to his children, not to the court. P sure if you were convicted as guilty then your assets would all go to the court, so ye
I remember running into this album back in 2012 and it has haunted me ever since then, and I could never find it. All that was scarred in my mind was the cover art. Thank you for solving this almost decade long search for me.
How?
had the exact same thing happen with me lol
oh my god, absolutely same. I have been looking for this album for YEARS with the image of the cover being my only clue. so glad I found Giles Corey. never letting this album go again.
the death of Giles Corey is like a metaphor of how we all die. crushing under immense weight of our self identity, knowing the answer to life's all important questions but refusing to utter them, and keep asking for more life which is actually more death
Except we absolutely do not know the answers to life’s all important questions.
God this channel rocks so hard. Dan Barret is a legendary spooky depressing music person and Giles Corey is fantastic.
I'd heard "No one is ever going to want me" before, but in isolation and only in my room. Then one day i was waiting for the bus at the transit hub. I turned on the full album, but i needed to hear the right bus coming... and also keep an ear out because it was dark as shit outside of the bus depot and I didn't want to get robbed. This meant that the vocals where just dissonant whispers and the instrumentals were these eerie things, never peaking over the ambient noise, but also adding to it, twisting it. Turns out that you really shouldn't play youtube on a cell phone with garbage battery capacity and the inability to turn the program into music-only mode, but it worked in that moment. I looked out through the sickly cast of the florescent lights and into the pitch black of that hot mess, and wondered what would die first, the album or the phone's battery. It wasn't either, my phone was around 4% and a half a minute ago the ghosts had snarled "one two FUCK you" in my ear, but I saw the headlights, and then the rest of the bus pull itself out of the night.
(Which i feel is like one of the best case scenarios to hear the album, but not great if you want the full clarity of the instrumentals/vocals and also like... for real, bring a spare charger. that's the sort of thing that could get you lost somewhere and then stabbed. don't get stabbed, kids.)
also "I wanna feel like I feel when I'm asleep" is one of the most accurate ways I've ever heard someone describe depression, and it gets me every time.
Alright so here’s my interpretation of the project. Giles Corey in short is about death. Each song takes on a different interpretation on how death affects someone (for example, in I’m going to do it he says he’s going to kill himself, in empty churches it talks about ghosts reconnecting with the living world and speaking, and in Sleeping Heart the protagonist seems to have accepted that death is inevitable.) This is important because it gives the album one sense of cohesion despite how different it sounds at time. At the end of the day, no matter how different we are, we will die.
Not to mention, Giles Corey the person was murdered for essentially sticking up for his wife. Hence the lyrics “and if I don’t survive/I’ll still be by your side/just clad in ghostly white/I’ll be your spectral bride.”
Also I agree Giles Corey > Deathcon but both are 10’s
@@FIRE-mx6vc both 10s but deathcon will always be superior to me 😈
That’s totally fair
I think they’re both 10’s too but I like folk a lot also The Future kinda boring
Giles Corey wasn't found guilty; he was rather tortured to be forced to make a plea, which he never did. As he never plead, he couldn't be punished with anything (you needed to make a plea before you could be tried), which prevented his property from being seized and his family inheriting it (his likely motivation).
The whole reason I checked out this album (after hearing No One is Ever Going To Want Me a while before), was because you said you were gonna do a video on it. Thank you!
I discovered this album when I was 13 years old and severely depressed. It definitely made me feel less alone. Wonderful video! Very thorough and straight to the point
I just heard this album last week at 13. I’ve never heard music that’s resonated with me like this
The most potently melancholic song for me at least is - “I’m going to do it”,
Especially the live version, the admission of your yet to come suicide, let alone your suicidal thoughts is something so difficult, almost impossible, we’re almost repulsed by it, yet he professes it in the most beautiful way, it had a really profound effect on me.
Dude I can't agree more I love the song but God it's depressing
I was really excited and nervous for this vid, this album has broken me completely and you did it complete justice. Incredible work yet again Jake
The Voor’s Head Device is actually supposed to restrict your breathing, not to the point of complete asphyxiation but to where it would make you dizzy. Couple that with the complete blindness and you have a brooding ground for disorientation and hallucinations.
I'm so glad I found this channel, This dude is the Wendigoon of music
This channel is very underrated! You deserve more subscribers! Love your videos my guy 🤙🏼
Omfg so excited for you to talk about this album.
Incredible, Thank You for this. 🙏🖤
i first discovered have a nice life, and in turn giles corey, a little over a year ago, but i didn't really start religiously listening to them until these past couple of months. it's really hard to put into words, but i haven't felt such a deeply rooted connection to an artist or music in general until this. half of my time i spend just reading dan's lyrics like they're a novel. i feel as though i can taste his words in my mouth and tangibly grasp the pain that HANL & giles corey makes me feel. this past year i have been dealing with self harm, depression, and suicide. i've been struggling with it my whole life, but this year has been the worst so far in relation to that. i've never been so close to death. it felt as if no one, not even my best friend like a sister, could ever feel my pain. it wasn't until i began to listen to HANL and giles that it felt like someone was putting my thoughts & emotions into words that i so desperately tried to find. the darkness inside my mind was taken and created into a masterful work of art. when i feel myself start to fall into another depressive episode, i turn to dan's lyrics to remind myself that i am not alone. someone out there does understand me. and there is a better option for me than that of death. i truly do owe my life to dan barrett. a wildly under appreciated artist. thank you for covering this!
The belief that no one could understand my pain, despite their love for me is where im at right now. They can no.longer save me.
Listening to this album made me feel understood. Thanks Jake for showing this to me.
you're the first person I've ever seen talk about this album, its amazing

You should look at dark ambient bands like Emit, Abruptum, or Xasthur. Many have very interesting stories behind them.

music suggestion: manic pixie dream world by coin locker kid. one of the weirdest albums i have ever heard, but if you loved superflat, you would like it
Discovered Giles Corey in 2021 when I heard "Winter's House" in a tiktok but started actually listening in 2023 when I heard "No One is Ever Going to Want Me"
Loved it since the day I heard it
8:09 Nahavlr snubbed by the media once again
didnt expect a njpw reference straight of the bat
Real recognizes real
He don't miss is swear
I didn’t realize how popular this was. I just learned about Giles Corey from listening to wreck and reference. Also, what’s the connection to blackwing?
Another of Dan Barrett’s side projects
I remember listening to “no one is ever going to want me” for the first time at a public library and it took so much strength to not fall to my knees crying, I was distraught 😭
What happened to Blackest Bile?
I was literally just listening to Buried Above Ground, are you stalking my spotify? 🤨
yah…
My favourite track from the album is Blackest Bile
Did my mans really just reference wrestler minoru suzuki in the first 5 seconds
Woah. Ur voice is so much deeper lol. Just came from ur red ring of death vid lol
Respect
5:24-6:38 what is that backround song???
Jake, do the Indian Summer EPs 93/94 🙏
I am quite suicidal. I listened to this albul last night at 3am. These songs scared me but only because they made me confront what my suicidality meant. I cannot describe what a "ckmforting fear " means but this album did it for me
I hope your doing better
You doing okay?
finally
Your profile picture made me smile
Shadowdog - Tirestire
Am I missing something or was Blackest Bile just not mentioned at all
and I'm going to do it, I was looking forward too him saying something about it, but I guess it wouldve been a lot to say something about every track
Omg, in my English class we’re reading the crucible, what a coincidence
Make sure you cite my as a source in your essay
@@ABucketofJake will do
if this video gets a certain amount of likes, will you wear the penguin suit for an entire video?!
That’s a great question what amount do you think is fair?
