lmao of all places for c'est la key to become popular i never expected it would be tik tok
he's on tik tok??
@@johnwayne7201 people on tiktok were talking about the album, he's not on tiktok himself.

Lil Darkie.
I love the parallels between "Mortal Man"
And "Mortal Mannequin"
I think that the drowsy voice is his thoughts, the clear voice is himself in the real world, and the text to speech voices are strawmen that his head has created that represent the thoughts of the real world, the voice of reason per say. "The Window" is a view to the outside world. The album's theme is really difficult to explain, but it's the sort of clash between the part of Devon that tell him he's a talented artist, and the part of him that want to address the problems of the real world, and the part that is grounded in reality, and the part that he shows other people, and the part thats just a horny slob, and all these things that are equally a part of him that he wants to get rid of that he perceives as holding him back from whatever he may be capable of, and the album is just him trying to describe what goes on in his head because it's it's so difficult to describe in plain words.
Another thing to note, the violins during the Creep cover are playing the same chords as Motion Picture Soundtrack from Kid A, the song Thom wrote on the same day as Creep (allegedly). I love this shit.
Thank you I was wondering why he didn't mention that!!! Also, the instrumental ends on the part of the song (Motion Picture Soundtrack) where he says "I will see you in the next life"; I thought that was worth pointing out.
Superflat has to be the best indie film that is only audio
that'd be there's no place like ohm
I’d say it would be Metamorph
"Radiohead fan takes a lethal amount of acid" would be a better description for it.
And here I was thinking we were playing Minecraft.
He DID come back... He has made new albums under coin locker kid and cest la key. If you liked this album, "There's no place like Ohm" is also a pretty good album by him

Aye 👋
Yo
Tbh with how much stuff that happened on the album it felt like it took place over a long time so i was suprised to learn that the chickens were alive.
Just listened to it.. I don’t know what it was but I loved it.
lmao I saw your comment under the album
@@edibbl5970 huh
this is such a bizarre experience, im dying to know what the backstory behind this album is
"Those tracks are shit. And you're a piece of shit. And you're a bad boyfriend." Probably one of my favorite track introductions of all time. Great video, glad you enjoyed. But also fuck you my topster is flawless.
Hearing that Thom Yorke section after you'd written the script must've been some sort of spiritual experience hahaha
It awesome to have found a yt channel that loves to explore interesting/experimental music. Thank you 🙏
I interpreted the narrative as a young artist struggling with feelings of jealousy, inadequacy and battling his own expectations of himself. It drives him deep into his mentally ill mind, to the point where his memory is affected and he is almost in psychosis towards the end. To me, the window is about confronting his fears of the world, his fear of failure and judgement of others but also recognising that there is good in the world, hence the voice telling to open the window and let the light in. It also reflects how self care in small ways may not deal with an issue in it's entirety but it's a step in itself, this is also what I think the "feed the chickens" motif represents but hey, that's just my take
This is what i got originally aswell. Ive listened like 5 times and its still what i get. Of course arts meaning is always up to interpretation so yk no ones interpretation is wrong.
Im very much in love and entranced by this strange masterpiece. Thank you for introducing me to this, Jake.
I haven't listened to this yet and im just just going off what was said, so take this with a grain of salt. The chickens are deffinetly a representation of Devin's problems/fears, and feeding would be reconsiling with them. The fact that they appear so persistently with him constantly needing to feed them really alludes to this. It also ties into how he uses art to get away from all his issues, as seen by the text to speech voice urging him to play a song instead of feeding them. The final song is a time skip to happy ending where Devin has found a way to deal with his grief and lead normal relationships.
in my opinion, this is one of those works that are so thematically dense that it's nearly impossible to sum it up into a simple thesis or whatever. it's about being an artist, about being mentally ill, about toxic masculinity, about the place of ''artsy'' music in the world, about pretentiousness, human connection being set aside to pursue a passion, and so much more. this album is way too specific and singular in its story to be given a broad description, we can all agree devyn is the only person that could have made superflat. an work of art doesn't need a ''theme'' or for us to be able to say what it's about in a concise sentence to be understandable and relatable.
great work on the video by the way, definitely the most polished discussion on the album i've seen so far.
been waiting on this album to get a lil more recognition
Already lovin it
I remember telling u to listen to it on the good enough podcast veteran listening party, and you were like: man Jackson told me to listen to it
Probably a really flat surface
Yup
4:40 thats called spoken word bro.
I really love Superflat, and I love his later album Metamorph more! It just really hits something special for me.
i think its also worth noting that the violins in creep have a certain clarity that the friend was talking abt
Did anyone notice Charles Kilgore is the unreliable narrator from nabokov's pale fire?
Since on the topic of aliases and cinematography in music albums you should check out Neøn
For some reason I didnt get the notification of your post AND it wasnt on my recommended scroll so may wanna peep into that but wanted to say I like this structure a lot! You being slightly uneasy with everything you say because you dont for sure know is cool as a viewer😂 also, third category here but imma go check it out not at 444am
Also, currently wayyyyyyy too geeked for 16:00 and that wavy background
I can already tell this is gonna be a good one. As my recommendation, I’d like to suggest Nowhere At The Millennium of Space. It’s an album inspired by Eateot, using 60’s-80’s records. The ending alone is worth a listen.
Thanks mister bucket!
One of the biggest surprises I had was hearing you say "and so unlike anything I've ever covered on this channel".
Really, Jake? Did you feel like this album goes beyond and the other experiences you've covered so far? I don't even mean as in quality or significance, but as in "this is out of my realm".
I am surprised to hear you say that because, to me, your channel is precisely where I hoped to hear from about something like this. And in a good way, because your reviews add a welcome layer to these experiences, in many aspects.
When I said it was "unlike anything I've covered on this channel" I meant in the way that this isn't music focused where as EATEOT and HTDC are mainly musical projects.
I've never covered a dialogue heavy piece of work where the music I cover is just that music, not really any script reading or live action recreations of field recordings
This channel is for bizarre music but this isn't even music, thus why I say it is so "unlike" anything I've covered
@@ABucketofJake I see, you have a clear point then.
My experiences with the previous content you covered, together with the way you present it, somehow created an image of you going comfortably outside the realm of "music", with the documentary style and the "this is an experience, check this out" vibe (which I subscribe to), and it made me blind to that specific difference when you mentioned it.
But please, keep at it! You're a great guide to these experiences, even when they apparently have traceable amounts of real music in them.
3:10 it’s great how people just use language they think they understand, you don’t describe the artist as “late” if they are still alive. Read a book
love the lil when I ball instrumental in da back 😈💯🙏🙏
If you enjoy this, you'll love J. Fisher's current discography.
I think Devon felt so frustrated with his music at the time that he decided to make a shitpost story showing his demons instead. I was super confused after listening to it but it was really funny.
Doesn’t feel like a album more of a audiobook (without the book) than a album
i think that the albums first 3 songs are part of this album hes making in the album and the rest of the album is him basically stressing out over making the album and it drives him crazy towards the end except for the last song where he snaps out of it kinda.
i like you using the pewdiepie logo to represent "experimental vaporwave"
It gave me Infinite Jest vibes

Wow, never heard of it

Who's the shade of Virginia Woolf is a nod to I'm afraid of Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf by Murder by Death and I'm here for it.
this is a genuine shot in the dark, but on the guy whos video is linked in the descriptions channel (now deleted) he had listed this and 1 other album as his favorites ever, does anyone remember because i cant for the life of me.
it was el negro by sb the moor, which is a more straightforward exp hip hop album with a lot of artsy rock/orchestral influences
i believe this is the story of an artist who is aware that he has gone off the deep end (may even have schizophrenia, something you'd need a professional for. ) and this record is his life through his fucked up mental state.
I think Devyn shits on Kendrick from a point of jealous admiration, he (as a perfectionist) is mad and jealous that Kendrick was able to make such a deep album so mainstream, the idea that Kendrick is 'pimping' his own experiences and as a music perfectionist Devyn is mad. However I believe the point of this whole album is to show that choosing having an understandable meaning and having true art is an impossible problem, which Devyn learns by the end. Devyn is shitting on TPAB because he is down in the depths of his unrealistic perfectionism, which he grows from

Not meaning to compare this to anime, but... I feel like this is more of a drama CD than a music album. A surreal, experimental Drama CD. And it's honestly great. There should be more works like this.
If you're gonna check non-"music" albums, how about, Peter Sotos - Buyer's Market?

I'm glad this video was made because it brought a lot of people to an album i really love and Devyn deserves more listens so thank you, but it's called explaining superflat and has a thesis like title and he says go listen to the album before you watch the rest of this video, so why would you sit there and reexplain everything anyone who actually took the time to do that that just heard. my time feels so wasted, I literally just watched nothing, if I took a nap or just sat still for 10 minutes I would have the same amount of knowledge and experience as I would after watching this "commentary" video. I wanted to hear an interesting take or disection of the album because it's so wrought with detail and ideas. ...again thank you for i guess at least promoting a such a hype and niche piece of art, but this was a completely hollow experience.
Always felt like something I shouldn't be listening to.

Yes

This isn't new I've heard many foreign albums like this in various genres. My favourite it's a comedy album. real life rapper was leaving the country to work. And his friends put together an album "goodbye John" and it's a collection of made up skits and songs about their past with john. The opening song it's a love song about this rapper and John being the only gays in a small town, blowing each other behind the school, picking wigs together becoming male prostitutes and being locked in an old man's basement for 2 weeks. Then another song was about this rapper and John doing heroin in a park then playing football with a bag of dog poop only to burst on John's head when he tried to do a header. Another song was about this fat rapper saying John helped him get from 200 pound to 300 pounds, and now that he is leaving he won't be able to witness him get up to 400 pounds. Then John joins the joke half way in , makes a song about wanting to rap in America getting a gold chain, getting rid of his fake Jordans and buying a hammer. Another song is John writing to his mother a letter about how to care about his weed plants back home and his mother turning into a drug kingpin.

Hey man, not sure if you’ll see my comment but it’s worth a shot. I’m looking for one of the channels you have linked in the description (chester). I’ve noticed his superflat review got taken down but I’m not sure about his channel. Do you happen to have any of his videos linked or a channel link which will work, it’s hard to find him with such a un-searchable name
I was looking for his channel too. I think it might be deleted entirely did you end up finding it? He also had a rym account i think and Idk if that still exists either.
DEVYN LIKE ME FR HE LIKE ME FRRRRR
By no means am I trying to hate and I understand and respect the positive reviews and such but I heard this recently and found it very disappointing. It’s labeled as an album so I expected a little more music to it but people talking for an hour doesn’t really hold my attention that well and I don’t really like the story that much partly because I found the delivery for just about all the talking to be pretty cringy so, it’s not for me, myself, personally
Yeah I didn’t see this as a album either
Yes i second and back up your statement/opinion. This is just something weebs, and people who want to fit in, will listen to. Not to seem rude but it is true.
pls ignore my bad english and horrid spelling mistikes but anyway, i guess the way you perceive it depends on the context you are given. like most people who found it with little to no context, would obviusly expect music due to the lable "album" attached to it. but for some people who expected the thing in it, they would more than likely be satisfied. I guess an example of that is me. I listend to the summary in this vid so i expected what's coming and I actually liked it. Well I certainly don't think that I'm a weeb or someone who'd like to fit in, as some people might suggest, but I still liked it. But this is just my opinion. I am in no way saying that you should like or dispise the album. I understand that it is not for everyone and I should respect everyone's opinion.
@@TheStunnerFTWI don't think anyone trying to "fit in" would listen to something like this, lol
This is art like any other art you like that others may not, really lame to boil it down to what you said just cuz it didn't resonate with you.
