6 Ways on How to Unfreeze a Car Door Lock in the Winter

- Video tutorial on how to unfreeze your vehicle's door locks during the winter. Some vehicles are equipped with heated door locks, some are not. This is something which you will need to refer to your owners manual. If in the event your lock is frozen, DO NOT force it. You can risk the chance of bending the key, breaking the key, or damaging the lock assembly. This particular tutorial was done on a 1997 BMW 540i.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-heat gun or hair dryer
-lock deicing tool
-lock deicer
-Vaseline or petroleum jelly
-WD40
-hand sanitizer
Procedure:
-using a heat gun or hair dryer, you can either heat the lock area on the door, but be careful not to damage your paint
-the heat gun or hair dryer can be used to heat the key which can be inserted in the door afterwards
-a lock deicing tool can be used, which works similar to a key and can be inserted in the lock
-it is a heated element, which emitted heat in the lock that melts the ice.
-lock deicer can be also spray inside the lock assembly
-the trap door on the lock does need to be opened when spray the deicer in the lock assembly
-with vaseline or petroleum jelly, this can be applied to the key, then insert it into the door lock and wiggle it around until the lock frees up
-WD40 is a moisture disbursement penetrating oil
-again like lock deicer, you will need to pop open that trap door in order to spray it in the lock assembly
-let it sit for a minute and this will melt the ice away inside the lock
-a proper lock lubricate will have to be applied afterwards.
-hand sanitizer can also be used to melt the ice away because it does contain alcohol
-just like the lock deicer or WD40, the trap door will need to be opened in order to apply it within the lock assembly
DO NOT USE HOT WATER TO MELT THE ICE AWAY IN THE LOCK, THIS WILL MAKE THE SITUATION WORSE.

Thanks for your video! Hand sanitizer worked for me! It was stuck two days ago and again this morning. Key fob doesnt work, and saw this video that saved the day!!
There is one other way to unfreeze a frozen door lock. I would call this a last ditch effort, but it does work. If you have one of those red straws from cans of spray lubricant, take the straw, stick the straw inside the lock, and blow through the other end into the lock. Your breath is warm enough that after a few huffs and puffs, enough warm air from your breath will unfreeze any lock. Make sure when you blow air through the lock, that you inhale through your nose, not your mouth. Through your nose will keep the air warm as you blow through the straw.
Great tip, thank you for sharing!
I was freaking out this morning 😂 . My key fob dosen't work and the driver side door is the only one with a key slot. After two hours of freaking out I found this video! The Vaseline trick worked for me ! Thanks a million 🙏

Happy to help! Yikes that's cold. I'm in Ontario, so far the lowest it's been is -25 with the wind chill. How much snow do you have?
It's -10° and I just used 91% rubbing alcohol and it worked which is really good because my propane heater tank was locked inside my truck. Got the idea from your sanitizer suggestion but I didn't have any..TY
Excellent tip, I honestly didn't even think of rubbing alcohol. Thanks for sharing!

GameNTech wd-40 when it’s warm out to get the water out of the lock
I have a question for you. Sometimes in the winter I can get my frozen door to open but then I get in and the door won't close because of it being frozen. It just pops back open. Any ideas in that case?
Cathy, slightly roll your window down. Just did it this morning and it worked!
@@grahamb6293 Thanks - will try it next time it is stuck.
Carry a propane torch... I had 2 96-99 Taurus's door would never stay shut in winter. I would heat up latching mechanism and it would stay shut
@@bertsbug5757
I got a small propane torch myself, wouldn't that damage the lock somehow, not to mention the last plastic covering?
I'm tempted...
I tried with W40 and heating no success .Chevy cruzw
Have you been able to get into the vehicle using an opposite door. Try warming the vehicle up and sometimes the heat from the cabin will help melt the ice in the lock.
Hand sanitizer worked on my Chevy this morning. 62% alcohol base sanitizer
I tried the sanitizer didn’t even work …I jus kept dipping the keys in hot water n putting it in the hole…only way it worked
