Concealment Coat Rack Build (New Version) / Make Money With Woodworking!

- Опубліковано 5 лют 2022
- Woodworking business or just for personal use... this concealment build is for you! New and improved version of the concealment coat rack build. The first version I made was one of my very first UA-cam videos and to be honest, I had no clue what I was doing. So I decided to remake the video to higher quality and to talk about the business side of things as well as the changes I've made. I've had a ton of interest in this build for a woodworking side hustle or for incorporating it into a woodworking business. I'll also be adding in the installation of an RFID lock versus the magnetic one. Hope this helps!

Thank you for this video on 2 counts. One, thanks for supporting the second amendment, and thank you for the video on how to build a nice piece of furniture.
the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
you are teaching this old carpenter a few things, and I appreciate it, may God bless you and your business. hello from AZ
Thank you for this video, Matthew. I purchased the plans and made this coat rack for my Son in Law for Christmas! As I'm typing this I'm looking across my workshop at this finished project and have to admit a small amount of pride in completing this, my most ambitious project. Please keep the great videos coming!
Thanks Matt. I just finished the garden trellis and now i'm going to give the concealment shelf a shot. You have been very generous in sharing your knowledge!
😂 "concealment " .... "shot" ... lol
Starting my woodworking business after 15 years of being an “employee”.. I was making a list this morning of everything I can build that people would buy, including hidden gun furniture lol. Hop on UA-cam and there this is. Great video, might buy your plans!
Welcome David! I have a couple posted and building more. People love hidden compartment furniture.
Thanks for the great idea for a home based wood working business. My wife is happy with your design for the concealed gun cabinet and coat rack. She can't wait for me to build one for her. Amazing job. Thanks for the encouragement, plans and build list 👏👏👏👍
Keep an eye on the channel for more concealment builds 😉
Absolutely dig your humility and candor... Shit happens so just roll with it... Excellent attitude... Mistakes happen. Move through it and keep rolling.
Thank you for what you do. I have been really getting into wood working and I greatly appreciate your willingness to teach. Your not in it just for the money, you seem to genuinely want to share the knowledge and it shows.
Thank you. I enjoy teaching others and sharing what I know. How else are we to grow if we don’t share it with each other’s?
Matthew, I'd just like to say that I've started watching your videos and I truly am enjoying them and I really appreciate how you show how to build all of these item's and your encouragement on building and selling them. Great job, and keep up the great work and videos. Thank you!
Alot of information in 32 minutes.
Thank you for sharing with us all.
Great build!
So awesome. This is exactly the type of inspiration I was looking for in my next project.
Love your videos… and even how you point out your own mistakes- cause we all make them!
I think the concealment coat rack combined with the mudroom locker and bench would be a great build.
You said you was going to make this video and you did. Thanks bro 🙏.
You're welcome Craig. I try my hardest to do videos that folks want to learn from. I had never intended on selling plans either... but people were asking for them. Then I realized that not everyone learns the same way...
Matt this is a awesome build! thanks for putting this content out for those of use who are new to
woodworking. your videos rock!!!!!
So awesome! I hadn't gotten around to sketching one of these up yet. I'm definitely getting the plans! Thanks so much for all you do sir!
You're very welcome Tim.
Very cool build.
When adjusting that RFID latch.
You could put some two sided tape on the pieces like the magnetic locks.
Get the position right and then drill and screw.
Dude! Thank you so much. I built a version of your idea, and it's PERFECT! I built it specifically for my 12 gauge. All I have to do, is reach out with my right hand, and shotgun in hand, I tell the prospective intruders (including DPD), to leave or die. It looks like a trad coat rack, but it knocks open at a touch. I KNOW, it's not kid friendly, but all my kids are grown and gone. Seriously, thank you, bud.
I ordered the bundle drawings for the coat rack and the shelf so I can physically have those in hand. I think you’re great Mathew keep up the good work and FYI I’m 52 years old but I picture myself when I get closer to retirement age really getting into this as a substitute income thanks a lot buddy take care !!
Thanks Shawn! Im trying my best! More to come!
Right on Matt, I was hoping you would make a newer version of this video,Like David said I am too starting my own woodworking Biz on the side and hidden gun Storage,Mantles etc are definitely on the top 10 list that people are always asking about,Keep up the good work Matt!!!!!
Thanks man! The mantle build is coming up next!
Love the remark around 14:30, not to get down on yourself when you make a mistake, cut a new piece. Accidentally cut both side pieces 45 degree on 3 sides instead of 2 for the floating shelf build. Wanted to give up, after all, that was 1 of a few occurances that set me back today, but I kept fkn going. Thanks bro
Really great build. I got to make me one of these for sure. I enjoy watching your build videos, you do a great job of narration and describing each step.
Thanks! They are pretty neat and easy to build.
Another excellent video! I will be making this soon so I really appreciate this updated version! Thank you!!
Thanks Mike!
Love that you’re updating older content. Looks great.
Ty!
That's just COOL. I'm hoping to build one soon. Thanks for sharing with us.
No worries!
Going to be one of my next projects. Gonna make some little adjustments to it for my use! Thank you for the new version!
Heck yea! Get creative!
Thank you for doing this. It's nice watching and some day I will try it
Gorgeous and love the design, thanks
Another great one!
I love your enthusiasm and giddiness when you talk about/use the card readers!! That alone makes me want to buy some and just randomly hang them throughout the house... ha ha!
Thanks for the time and effort
Thanks Jonathan! Yeaaa we are all still kids at heart when it comes to cool gadgets. I had to edit that part down... I did that for like 5 min lol.
This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
The best woodworking video! I’m excited to do mine. Thank you!!
Awesome! Thank you!
I've built an entire cabin with no plans, I should be able to build a box with a door. I'd like to mount one of those by the front door. Nice work! Well done video.
Great video Matt, very informative. Thanks
Amazing content. Your videos have come a long way clear and I like the transitions from one point to the next 👏
Ty my man. I try to improve something each time... Im not an editor and it takes forever! But I'm learning!
Also Matt, Thank you for the content Brother. Dig it.
Thank you so much for another awesome tutorial!!!
You bet!
Great build & I appreciate the details!! Looking forward to building this to see if it sells in my area!
No worries! Good luck!
Great video and great content. This channel is one that I can appreciate and learn from. Thanks for your knowledge and time.
Thank you for watching!
Great build!!!! Something to consider, adding a gas strut shock to make the door spring open upon being unlocked to make items quicker to be accessed.
Also given a coat rack is generally at eye level or higher, you may want to design it so the door flips up.
I was thinking the same thing.
@@sinsofvorador I was also thinking that adding the strut would be necessary. Great suggestion about creating the door to flip up. Great video, and suggestions.
since its coming out and down alot of people wont use a shock as it might come down too fast and hit you. But yes, having it flip up would be a great design too.
Nice job, I've seen this in the background of your other videos, glad I found it.
I watched your video and It was very cool. Easy build. I learn by watching. I have an AR-15 and I was wanting to build a tactical concealment coat hanger. In this day and age there are crazy people doing home invasions. Two weeks ago someone kicked my door in just when I wasn't home. Luckily they didn't steal anything of value maybe the suspect saw my headlights when I was coming home. Now I definitely want to make a concealment firearm coat rack. I'm pretty sure the burglar will attempt another break in. Possibly break my bedroom window. I have my AR-15 mounted on my wall in plain view, but I need concealment coat hanger so the burglars won't find my two firearms hidden.
New viewer and I love your channel! All the info you link is awesome too!
Thank you so much brother!
No worries!
This is a great project well done, for sure I'll make me one and with your permission I'd like to make some to sell at my craft shows
My man you make and sell as many as you want.
You, are the man!
Thanks!
No worries! Thank you!!
Awesome! Great job walking through the build and "esplaining" things in a simple manner. I want that depth gauge/sliding ruler you kept using. I didn't see it in your Amazon list. Can you share? Thanks!
This is a great project. But I'm thinking about running sliders for the compartment instead of a hinge. I think it'll be pretty cool
Nice work. Thank you
No worries!
Love this not sure how I came across your channel but we need more concealment builds
Another great video.
I love what you do man - you are awesome!
Thanks brother.
Thanks Matt, with a baby on the way I need to build one of these!! I’ve always kept my rifle in the closet ready to go but with my first kid I want to be safer!
So cool man!! Love it!!
This would be a nice topper for a hall tree/mud room bench.
Rad build my friend. I appreciate your content and may have to make on these in the near future.
Heck yea! And no worries! Make a few if your going to make one. :)
Great stuff 🎉
Bro you're the man
lol thanks man.
Great video man!
I wish I could make something like this. This is so cool. I’m not much of a handyman at all and I’m terrible with projects and stuff. I tried making a birdhouse once and let’s say I learned that I should not be near tools 😅 but I’m glad other people can make these things and I can just buy one that’s safer for everyone lol 😂
Awesome stuff. Subscribed
Love this. I watched it several times and have a question. Is there a reason that you couldn't wait to attach the back last? Wouldn't it make it easier to install and adjust the hinges and locks?
Awesome! Been waiting for this!
Enjoy!
Just wanted to note about the cheaper version RFID lock, which recently I finally pulled the gun to complete this project but had an issue with the latch and as Matt states give them a call and I did and received good input from Jeff Walker from Lock Connection and he was very helpful to work out my problem even though I created the issue. Just thought I would give a shout out on this project and Thanks again Matt for the inspiration. I would post a picture to show it off but not today.....
Thank you for the shout out! We do our best to help people. We are a small company and we mainly only supply products to the concealed furniture market.
I like this better then the shelf. Walmart sells shelf for $99, so it's tough to get a good price for those in my area. Thanks for the video. Awesome!
wow. I didnt know the ole wm was in the business. I bet its crap. Thanks... more to come!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking yes, I'm assuming it's garbage, but guess some folks don't mind it if they can get for less.
great channel
I prefer the biometric latch, you always have your fingers on you!
Imma build at least one, the concealment shelf is cool but i realy like this
I'm curious why you didn't leave the back unattached till the very end. This would allow you the ability to do the lock without "trial and error". You can then attach the back with pocket screws making it more secure. Plus, with the RFID lock, in case the battery does go dead, you can then take off the back and change the batteries. In all, AWESOME build. Keep up the good work!!!
I made the concealment shelf as per your previous video. I looked at the RFIDs but in a pinch I figured someone would want something simple and reliable so went with the magnets. If it can fail…it will. When you need it most. In my head the RFID might fail. I also found a 6 inch tactical red LED motion activated light so when the shelf opens the light goes on. But damn that foam is expensive!
Nice! And yea I feel ya. The foam has gone waaaaay up.
We have been supplies this RFID lock for over 15 years now. They are very reliable. However, they are electronic so they will eventually fail. Just like most vehicles, something will eventually fail on it. We also have Red, and blue LED lights.
@@lockconnection3731 nice! Thank you for the update.
Hey Matt. Great video. Love your work and detail. 1 question. For the door. Are the top and bottom boards for the door 43½ which is what it says in the description or 43⅛ like it says in the video?
First I would like to thank you. You are very inspirational and give me a lot of motivation in my little shed. I’m making one and am almost done. I wanted to put gas struts inside to help it open. What do you suggest.
Great build! Thank you Sir! Wondering if you think struts would work with this?
Nice job brotha
That's bad ass
A compartment to store... foam. Nice way to avoid demonitization lol
I had a pretty good question. That card reader is battery operated? If so when battery dies do you have to break shelf to open? Is there some kind of manual release? And if it’s a wired one and power is out ??
Was thinking while watching the lock installation, would it be easier to get the lock installed if you waited to put the beadboard in until after doing the locking mechanism?
What type of lumber do you suggest for this other than the bead board? Maybe a sheet of 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood?
I like the design, but I’d suggest using shocks to push the door up so that shorter people aren’t needing to reach over the door to access the hidden items. NOT criticizing, just an observation. Love your videos and your willingness to teach.
Hi, with using the other hinges I am having problems keeping everything flush. If I line them up to connect then when folding the front back up, the bottom divider piece is no longer flush with the bottom of the front piece. Insetting the hinges seems to be the only way to keep these flush unless I’m missing something. Thank you for everything you do!
what a great idea and build. wish i could build one of these myself, but not much of a wood worker. do you make and sell these anywhere that i could buy one?
Can there be a gas piston added to this build like on the concealment shelves. Great videos, thank you
If you were to use the hinges on the top and gas struts, what pressure struts would you use ?
I'm not sure if I didn't hear you correctly but on the build when you list the the dimensions for the door you state 43 1/8 when the cuts list states it's 43 1/2. Just a FYI
Do you think you could use same Hinges from the concealed shelf project. Compact 38N series 3/4" inlay ? Still have some left over ... Appreciate your inspirational videos
I love all your videos I wanted to know your format for pricing your products. I've seen a lot of other people and there method seems to make the price a little high. I know you want to make money with your craft and talent. Any help with this would be a benefit
2500 subs since last video. Won’t be long till you get the play button! Better be thinking how your going to display it.
Doing a great job on the video’s.
Thanks Rod! And man that's one of my goals. If I ever get there I may let you guys decide.
I love this style. Ive made a few shelf style concealment ones, but im definitely going to do one of these next. Thank you. QUESTION . with the child locks(white ones you show) if you loose the magnets that come with them you can always use any strong magnet to open it. What happens with the rf reader when the battery dies? how will you override and open it. (sorry if you covered it in the video, maybe I missed it)
once the batteries die, it auto unlocks
The magnets you can use a strong magnet like you suggested. On the RFID lock, when the battery starts to get low, it will beep multiple times when scanned indicating that the voltage is low. If you dont change out the batteries before they get to 3.6V, it will auto unlock.
How about tips for cutting the foam? Bevel the sides of the openings, maybe?
What kind of hinge would you use if you wanted the door to open all the way and hang vertical?
Obligatory, That's a lovely Rack
You do great work! Any plans on end tables/ night stands?
Not yet. I actually have some end tables in my line up!
The magnet and RFID options present an issue in my mind but I love the overall idea. Nice work sir! I have been learning a little about using splines in miter joints but still unclear on when to use . Curious...if this wasn't a prototype, would you lock in the miter joints differently? Hope your week is going well!
Thanks Ryan! To be honest I wouldnt for this build. Once the wood glue dries Its not going anywhere. Theres no real force that would cause an issue.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworkingGotcha that makes sense. Appreciate the feedback!
Is there any particular type of foam you use for the insert to hold the gun? Do you have a good place to order? It seems pretty expensive so wondered if you had suggestions.
Awesome Video, I love your videos. I am buying your plans!! I was wondering if there was I way you could open it from the bottom, and use the same dimensions? Thank You
Yep! I would incorporate a gas strut for that. I think I may do a video showing the different styles and cool add ons.
Nice job. Sucks how expensive lumber is these days. Killin me.
I know. The fuel prices are driving it back up.
I just finished building this, how do I send you pictures of it? I'm pleased with the way it turned out, and it's because of the easy to follow plans, and great build video you made for it.
Mpwbrags@gmail.com
I am a new subscriber. I like the way you thoroughly describe what you are doing. I was a carpenter for 19 years and never owned an impact drill. Is it worth the investment? I mean, I want one strong enough to do woodwork and take a tire on and off a vehicle. Which strength and brand do you recommend? I am retired now and just into hobby building, range time, hunting n fishing.
An impact wrench and impact driver are really two different tools. Big fan of an impact driver.
How do you get such a narrow gap bt the door and the frame? I’m using the hinges you recommended as well as the same settings on my kreg hinge jig but I can’t get any better than an 1/8” gap when the door is closed…
