I need a Stewy in my life again. I had a Paint mare that was fearless and calm. In the 10 years that I had her I never had any drama.
Now that I’m retired and older, that is just the type of horse that I feel like I need again. You are one of my favorites to watch on UA-cam, because of your patience and your thoughtful way you go about your training.
    ♥️👍😎

I did chuckle when Stewy turned his neck right round to see what the dickens was going on on his back, each time you climbed on, sometimes nibbling your jeans. He was so curious to find you up on him. It almost turned into a little joke for him.

I am really glad that you let the horses be comfortably themselves! It is also cute when you mention her ‘little wild horsey brain.” I have not had much exposure to horses, but have learned to really like them by watching your videos. Like cats and dogs, or even mice, etc., each one has their own unique personality which we need to respect.

    • @sallywaites8517

Unfortunately there are a lot of horsey people who think horses have no purpose unless they're able to work. It's really lovely watching these videos and seeing someone appreciate horses simply for who they are and not making riding them the top priority.

I like that Stewy is given time to slowly experience new small steps that build his confidence. Reviewing what he already knows is reintroduced him to the familiar before moving on to a new step. He is allowed to absorb each new thing slowly. There is no pressure to push quick results because of an owner-trainer timetableable. Expectations of progress x
      Can ruin a timid horse.
When trainers overbook their client's horses often the trainer as in a situation In AZ, the horse will be trained by an apprentice. This type of dishonesty does leave a reputation tarnished. The client will move on to another trainer trainer who is committed to living up to the contract agreement. Equally as i.portant is a trainer who is willing not to sacrifice a horse to push beyond what the horse is ready to learn.
I am not in favor of breaking down horses whose knees have not closed. The Thoroughbred is still growing bone, ligaments, origins & insertions of muscle onto bone. Horses are sentient beings. Their brains read behavior of other living animals and humans.
To treat the spirit of horses as an endless commodity replaceable by a foal crop in the next year, is a crime.
Building trust and giving the horses brain the chance to mature as well as the body & skeletal system is humane and respectful to who they are individually.
My time working the back side of the track educated my lack of awareness quickly.
I never bet on the horses. A book of anatomy and locomotion of the thoroughbred horse was given to me as a gift. " The Points of the Horse" ;written by Captain Horace M. Hayes helped me learn the anatomy bone by bone. Learned by 7th grade how to recognize a correctly made horse. Also examples of skeletal weak points were demonstrated by the photos and precise drawings of correct and incorrect anatomy.
Breeding, diet, stress training all were covered in this teriffic book..
My first horse was a retired track horse. His lip tattoo could still be read from his upper lip.
I think he was 17 h. He was gentle and so loved. I named him "Amigo".
      My heart horse.❤

Phyllis Hamilton here: I have been thinking deeply about your program, and your wonderful management and goals for your horses. I hope you don't mind my thoughts, because you deserve to achieve solid success as you reach your long-term goals. First of all, I sincerely hope you and your husband can find a suitable property which will enable you to achieve your goals. I developed two horse properties in PA and VA; my PA farm with a 13 stall show barn, an indoor, a large outdoor, and 8 paddocks. It was quite an adventure; I sold it to a boarding client in 2009. I'm hoping you can find a property on which you can build an indoor -- even a 60 x 100 -- and then most of all, find a great horse-obsessed teenager who can relieve you of all the mundane daily tasks, just for an affordable salary, riding privileges, or a boarding/share/lease arrangement. This will allow you to use your truly superior behavior modification skills to achieve so much more potential with your marvelous horses. Please forgive me for all this input, but having been there, and done that (now age 78) I'm just trying to pass on some thoughts from my life with horses! 🥰

How can any person not miss truly wonderful friends you don't see anymore??? Horses can be and are some of the best friends a smart person will ever have. Mourning their loss to time or sale SHOULD happen. At 70+ I still miss the mean old cutting horse mare who taught me how to fall off when she dropped or turned when I was 12. And I weep for her and all the others who blessed me with their trust and are long gone. I miss and mourn humans and dogs and cats and parrots. Maybe you need to repress your feelings of loss, but I ask why anyone would.

Too bad your boots don’t last as long as your lunge lines! 15 years is a pretty long time!
I have been thinking about your problems with turning your ankles ( because for many years I also turned my ankles easily ). I know you are very frugal, but since your ankles are bothering you and when you turn one, it has a big impact on your day to day activities, May I suggest that you splurge and get your self the best quality pair of boots that support your ankles… they will more than pay for themselves in the long run, imo. ❤
Love to see you working Stewy, teaching him foundation manners and explaining to us how he is so different from your other ‘students’.
Miss Scarlet is a little diva… and quite cute how she manages to get what she wants by stretching her pretty neck into the stall without actually going into the stall!
Interesting to realize just how much you do rely on radar to prep for big storms… when it looks perfectly to us outside!

Stewy is such a chill, good boy! I love his curious little nibbles at your legs. Like, "What are you doing back there human? Are you okay?"
I use to go to horse camp every summer (sometimes multiple times a year) and because of my horse experience I ended up always riding the most spirited troublemaker, Traveler. Traveler was a big dappled grey boy, nearly 17 hands and for a twelve year old that's huge! His favorite prank was any time we had stand he'd turn his head back, just a bit at a time so I wouldn't notice ...and then bite my leg. The first couple times I squeal in pain and suprise and the little bastard knickered and pawed like he was laughing. After a couple times I stopped reacting ... and he stopped biting. He did once somehow managed to sneak close enough while tied to bite my butt when I bent to pick up a brush. He thought that was hilarious.
Gosh I miss that horse. Every other little girl was terrified of him, but Traveler was my boy. Thank you for bringing back great memories

Can’t wait to watch Stewy come along. It was interesting to hear you say that you start your horses in the center rather than on the edges of a pen. I never thought of that but it makes perfect sense - and makes it easier for a horse to learn/understand - rather than just follow along a wall.
Scarlet is coming along with her bridle training. So nice that you are giving her the time she needs. It shows.

This pace and technique is what makes for a truly finished horse over time. I think one downside of placing a horse with a trainer comes from expecting certain results by a certain time, which is hard to get away from when it's costing you money. But horses need time for both their bodies and minds to mature and that can't be rushed, only supported.
I've attended 3 of Buck Brannaman's clinics in the last 10 yrs. and this year he said something about himself that touched on this subject. His practice has been to train his 3 yr. olds under saddle every winter while he's home with his family and a few years ago he decided to experiment by only riding them at the walk and trot. He decided to only ask them to canter at the very end of the winter before he went out on the road again and when he did, they were balanced and self carrying with no fuss. It was the best progression he'd ever experienced with young horses and he adopted that practice ever since.
I see you doing the same thing by taking each of your horses at the pace most appropriate for them. I'm really looking forward to seeing Scarlet under saddle but you're timing with her training is perfect for her body and mind. She'll be an interesting and talented horse to own.

I like your approach to beginning training for getting ready for riding. Patience and praise for success works great. Trying both sides of the brain some horse owners don’t get it. We were well trained to horses by a great trainer. Different from training dogs!🐴😂❤️
