As I have gotten older, I understand why my grandfather carried a smaller knife . I know carry a Buck 55, Fisher space pen in a Hitch and Timber wallet. I love having everything I need in a small compact package. A bonus, it is all USA made.
As an electrician I carry a skeletool cx everyday. Would highly recommend to anyone who works in a trade. One handed open and closing knife no need for a dedicated knife as it is one. Screwdriver is a must for me, pliers and wire cutter comes in handy regularly as well. Without the extra bulk and weight of a full multi with a bunch of tools I wouldnt ever use.
Same brother.
Skeletool is a must mention on here, glad you brought it up!
I’m a landscaper and a skeletool is great for me because it’s in a small package. I only really use the pliers for when my pruners or loppers need to be tightened. I carry another knife or two already but the screwdriver comes in handy sometimes for sure.
I worked as a multi-craft technician in industrial maintenance. My first rule was that I didn't loan my knife, period. Need a blade? Here, use the Leatherman one. That said, I carried a gold class 941 with an M4 blade. I used it A LOT and kept it very sharp. It held a long edge. I also carried a Leatherman Charge Ti and bit set & ratcheting extension. This I did for many years and had no reason to change. In retirement I can't part from my EDC kit, but upgraded to a small Sebenza w/Magnacut and Micarda, a gift to myself that I'm really enjoying.
The most underrated tool on a Swiss army knife is the *corkscrew.*
Nobody uses it, but it's absolutely amazing for untying knots!
So much rope and chord can be saved by not cutting a knot that is impossible to untie, because with a corkscrew it becomes REALLY easy to untie any knot.
Thomas, you failed me. On the s45v question, I was hoping you’d say that the difference is that s90v has 45 more V’s. 😂
Ah, but then how much is that N in S45VN worth? --Thomas
Hey DCA, regarding corkscrews. My knifes corkscrew has helped many folks at cookouts and tailgate opening bottles of wine. Even if you don’t need it yourself being prepared to help folks is a good feeling.
I understand your point but how often are you going to cookouts where this has happened? I can think think of maybe a handful of times in my life. Alternatively I have need for a Philips screwdriver on an almost daily basis.
Right on with tanto and surge as an EDC for tradesmen. That is exactly what I carry - Surge in a kydex sheath and a beater tanto (with partial serrations, great for cutting straps on packaging). Another benefit of the tanto is that it’s great for prying.
Awesome episode! I’ve been needing a REEEEALLY deep dive episode into bushcraft knives, axes, and saws. Like best 3 steels, best 3 grinds/blade shapes, & you and Knife Center crew’s top recommendations for brands in the bushcraft space. Like a “selecting your bushcraft tools MASTERCLASS”
As a tradesman (plumber) i definitely recommend a fixed blade, my current go-to is my Ontario RAT 3
I would like to see an all Victorinox bushcraft combo which includes a fixed blade, multi-tool and a SAK like the Outrider, Work Champ, Hercules or others. Thanks for your excellent channel.
Bless you for using the correct definition of sheepsfoot and Wharncliffe. That's straight from the old knife pattern books.
Great video. Glad to see Thomas back. I watch every one. Thanks 🎸🔪
I have an old cold steel Carbon V knife that I was trying to figure out what it actually was. You guys never disappoint.
Great episode guys. Nice to have you back Thomas 🍻
my EDC combo is a bradford guardian 3.5 in vanadis 4e, my victorinox tinker as my keychain knife, and usually one of my spyderco’s primarily the manix 2 lw rex45 or my native in magnacut, as well as a wharncliffe k390 endura and a KC exclusive pm2 cruwear depending on the day and weather
Keep up the great videos. Just a quick note, I'm a huge super tinker fan, carried one for years, but other considerations I'd suggest:
For urban EDC Victorinox compact (I paired one of these up with a spiderco tenacious and a leatherman sidekick for my wife) and the Victorinox pioneer X alox (specifically the x for the scissors) is a honourable mention (the alox models have thicker tools than the standard).
If you are looking at heavy multitools, the Gerber Dual Force has some appealing features. As mentioned, a Skeletool CX has a decent knife and doesn't require suspenders to carry. No love for an Opinel outdoors? The Rangergrip? Easy to sharpen, cut great... Also I've noticed there isn't much attention paid to the more nautical end of outdoors pursuits despite some knives from Sypderco that will at least survive the environment. Filet knives get a little attention from a few makers, rigging knives don't seem to have changed in 50 years (aside from 2 options from Victorinox), and reviews in these areas are rare. Also the Victorinox handyman is not a bad balance of weigh, bulk, and utility to go with a dedicated knife.
One of the best knife channels on UA-cam. Always look forward to you clearing things up.
I’ve been thinking about my every day carry knives and gotten a little bored with my Spyderco that I’ve carried for years and years. I recently added a Victorinox Rambler to my keychain and I so love it. I’ve been looking for a sub-3” blade folder and really enjoying all of your KnifeCenter videos. I really like the look of the Civivi Elementum and it seems to perform well. I had one sitting in my Amazon shopping cart for days. But, today, I went on the Knife Center website and found the brown micarta version steeply discounted. Even with shipping, it was still $17 less than Amazon. Next, I’m thinking about a multi-tool to keep in my day pack and thinking of a larger Swiss Army Knife to round out any situations I might encounter. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks kindly for all the knowledge and wisdom ya’ll share!
Yayyy Thomas Behind-the-Camera is back :D
DCA. You had an example of a knife that works well in the trades on the table. The mariners knife with the marlinespike. The problem with that one in particular is it is made by Schrade. I've been in the trades my whole life and I used to have a Buck made marlinespike knife that lasted much longer than the Schrade. Marlinespike can be used to untie knots and break loose shackle pins, which is very useful around crane operations. The marlinespike also serves as your pocket clip. It would be nice to have a manufacturer build a quality mariners knife with premium steel and construction that would hold up to a tradesman use.
Its so great that Thomas is back!
For general EDC, a well-made, large, locking folder & an Alox Pioneer
I've run a sog paratool for 30 years and a petrified fish 838 for an edc. Great combo
What bushcraft knives would you recommend looking at for handle comfort? I always find the wooden handles are less comfortable and cause more problems.
I love my new WE Banter with a wharncliffe blade, paired with a Swiss Army knife with a scissors, like the Explorer, Huntsman or Climber (I love SAKs and own 32 different versions).
Folding utility knives are great for trades. Simply replace the razor when dull and get right back to work.
Each time I always learning something 👏👏👍🤜🤛.
Over the years, my EDC has evolved into a fixed blade and 1-2 complementary multitools or SAKs.
Currently I go with a TOPS CUT 4.0, Skeletool CX (pliers used more than scissors by me) and a victorinox rambler. This is in my own country of course.
When I travel abroad (especially Europe) for work, i usually just carry a Victorinox pioneer X. Easy to obtain, non controversial.
Hi David,
In general, Handymen prefer partially serrated blades for cutting plastic and roots. What are some good partially serrated blades everyday use?
Hey DCA I have a dilemma and need some help. I’m looking for a traditional style knife with a lock back and no pocket clip. Not a removable but a knife with no clip. Preferably one that’s made with modern steel and under 3 inches. I have a native chief and would like a back up knife. My last one was a fallkniven u2 great knife but I’m interested in what a pro like yourself would recommend. Thanks a bunch and love the videos! Thanks to you and Tomas!
Hey DCA, in a video the other day, a Bear and Sons cleaver was featured. I find the crossover between kitchen and "regular" knives quite interesting. As there is no kitchen-ish section on the knife center web site, I was wondering if by chance some could be rounded up for a video? I'm specifically talking about larger fixed blades, not so much EDC. Anyway, love the content, thanks!
Your comment on the Sheepsfoot and Wharncliffe blade shapes made me wonder if any other blade shapes were created for specific jobs or purposes. Thanks for the great content.
Is there a way to add a belt clip to a bigger pocket knife with scales that are fancy, such as horn?
Great video! Welcome home Thomas!!
I was wondering if knifecenter still carries the Red River Knife shown in the video?
They are long since discontinued, as is everything that said "Carbon V" on it. Had to pull something from the personal collection to have an example to show. -DCA
@@knifecenter thanks l will keep my eyes open!
I carry a skeletool with 154 cm and a we big banter for work. Change the knife to a mini praxis for edc
As a plumber my work EDC has been a leatherman wave combined with a Cold Steel 4max Scout. Looking to upgrade to the Leatherman Arc and a folding utility knife. Still looking for a good EDC utility knife that gives a lot of cutting edge.
Sharon Steel was in the town of Sharon, PA. My grandfather worked for them. I have a folding knife (can't remember the brand or steel right now) that I wrote my name on the back of the leather sheath in marker when I was around 5 or 6 years old. The employees were told that steel from their factory was used in that specific model knife. I think that qualifies it as a heirloom....
I am in golf course maintenance. I carry a para 3 lw, knipex 4” cobra pliers, pokka pen, lynch nw pry bar and an Olight i3t flashlight. If I need anything more I have a leatherman rebar and a am Lenard 6” soil knife in my golf cart.
DCA, what blade materials are the best for edge retention? I have heard by now Magnacut is good for that but wanted to see what other materials or steels are best for my EDC (cardboard, tape, plastic ties, etc.) that I won’t need to sharped that often
I'm having a hard time finding good information on 2 steels: AUS-10 and 9Cr18MoV. I'd like to know how all 3 parts of the "stool" of traits for them compare to other steels: edge holding, toughness and stain resistance. Thanks!
The best otf and folding knife combo
My tradie blade that I think is a stronger contender than those presented: Cold Steel Recon 1 mini tanto. Triad lock, more comfortable than Air Lite and slim in pocket, 3" blade in Aus-10A that's decent enough while being easy to sharpen, hollow grind makes up for stout blade thickness and a BRILLIANT chisel tip. It's covered a ton of ground for me including chiselling out hinge pockets when I needed to hang a new door and didn't have any other tools handy.
Great vid as always DCA
You guys should carry the Milwaukee 1505. That with a small pliers and a mora or izula is my jam.
Hello Knife Center, I almost couldn't agree more with your pairings, but have a couple differences that I think are worth considering. For the multitool, the Victorinox Rangergrip 78 gives a larger saw and when carried in the pocket is very useful as the primary go to EDC blade, adding a neck knife like the Condor Otzi, gives that smaller but not too small stronger edc knife with the strength of not being a folder (it has a blade shape and size comparably quite similar to the Banter), for the 4 in fixed, I carry either a Condor Bushlore/Aqualore/Cavelore or a Mora Garburg (though the Kansbol does a superb job of meeting that need)... That said, I was wondering which 'Survival' knife (in the 7-9in range) would you recommend as the best fit to be a fourth knife when the three knives mentioned above are also being carried? Thank you, and if you don't answer this question in a FAQs, would you please answer in a comment, as this is the question I'm asking myself for my next knife purchase.
Honestly, hard to go wrong with one of my old favorites, a Becker BK9. They just plain work. -DCA
Thank you
Hey team could you do a video on suggested deep pocket carry fixed blades suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated
My son is turning 9 soon, he loves the videos and just did knife training in cub scouts. What is a good Cub Scout folder, fixed, and multi tool. Also he wants to know what his first spydeco should be.
Hi David.
I live next to a forrest and I go mountainbiking daily.
What is a good multitool for a biker?
Thanks
Hey DCA, I'm looking to buy my 1st full size Auto OTF I've narrowed it down to 3 knives; the Kershaw Livewire, the Utx-85, and the Southern Grind Arachnid. Can you help me decide? Things that are important to me are a reliable open/close mechanism, a blade that won't tire my arm when it's time to sharpen and of course some of that all important "Cool Factor" Thanks in advance!
Welcome back Thomas!
Thomas is on fire! Vacation did him well 😊. Good video overall
Hi David,
What knife blade is most like a razor blade?
As an ex-soldier, my woods/hunting carry was a Kabar, and a Victorinox Camper that did most of my slicing (the Camper has an excellent saw blade, excellent can opener, and corkscrew). A space blanket, magnesium fire starter, small sharpening rod, and needlenose pliers, were in a small kit. No, no multitool.
I'm a chef and always carry a pocket knife in the 4 inch range, a swiss army knife( always with scissors), knipex xs, a pen, sharpie, and a pocket sharpener. I can still do my job with this set-up if i dont have my chef knives with me.
Also a flash light and a bic lighter!
Welcome back Thomas! Missed those dad jokes !
How important is the angle when stropping? I've watched every knife sharpening video on your channel, and others, but always seem to make my blades worse instead of better when I try stropping.
I'm looking for a folding knife that would be suitable for salt water. Any other options besides the spiderco. Like for something fairly cheaper on price since it's not something I would use often
Curious what DCA might recommend. I broke down and bought a salt 2 on sale. But in my own research, 14c28n seems to be one of the more stainless budget steels so I was looking there.
What about the Cold Steel’s Kiridashi for a work knife?
I have just bought a Real Steel Scandi grind knife, purchased by accident. It is the sharpest knife I have ever owned but the blade and grind leave me wondering what its main uses are.I know it is a bush craft knife but I don't know what that means. Can you help out?
I regards to the question of the difference between s 45 and s 90, I would like to know the difference between s 45 and magnacut?
What affordable knife deserve to be bought several time (4 -5 time) so you could put one in your tool box, emergency kit, car kit, etc. For me, it is the Boker Atlas. It is not the only knife in those kits (usually there is a CKRT M16 tanto not too far), but the atlas always deliver
I went with huntsman over the super tinker because I like the versatility of the corkscrew appliances.
15:37 anything with a Survival Trombone ?
Hey DCA! Thanks for sharing your passion for knives. I've been collecting American made EDC knives for a couple of years. I've seen American made knives with M390 steel that I thought was always from Europe. This made me wonder what's the difference between an American made knife and one that's only assembled in the good ole US of A?
M390 is from Böhler out of Austria 👍
When will Spyderco release their Rex 121 knives they hinted at this month?????
3" blade with a full grip: Vosteed Corgi
Would blades like my Kizer Catshark be considered REVERSE sheeps foot? 😅
Hey guys... don't forget the Milwaukee 1505...as a warehouse guy, it literally handles everything, and it has a built in bottle opener which makes it a multi tool...😉
Oh...and i think the Pioneer X and new Soldier should be mentioned...much better for the money for the Swiss Army nominations...
According to @AdvancedKnifeBro, the steel in that QSP is equivalent to DC53. Hope that helps :~)
Do you have a video on your nodded Free P2? I'd love to see what you changed.
I swapped in a plain edge blade and I'm looking to acquire/install a bit driver. Evaluating my options there at the moment. -DCA
@@knifecenter I've been thinking about picking up an Arc bit driver for mine, but I can't decide what other implements I'd want to keep since I use most of them. I'm sort of waiting for Leatherman to introduce an Arc P2 to make the decision for me.
The pilar would have been another great nautical option to bring the same question as the nibbler, since it was named after hemingway's boat
Thomas is back. Let us rejoyce! :)
I keep my M4 Bailout on my work bench. Its great for scraping excess epoxy off my knife handle glue-ups.
Sr1 lite tanto for similar things in my work space. I have a bailout, but it's the 3v one. Jumped on it right when it came out. Obviously a regret.
@@megacabi’ve heard the 3v bailout steel is super soft, that true? i kind want one but i’m not buying it if it’s going to be basically a big bugout but with worse steel performance
@acid6urns definitely go with the m4 version with aluminum handles. I bought the 3v when it was released and from experience I can tell you I wouldn't trust it with any hard work. They may have fixed the issue now, but I don't know.
I'm a chef and always carry either a spyderco police or endura for the length ( if it won't slice a tomato, it's too short) and some sort of swiss army knife( depends on my mood and always a model with scissors) ,knipex xs ( can be used as tweezers in a " pinch") and either work sharp or victorinox pocket sharpeners. This covers all bases and I can still do my job if my chef knives get left at home....you can get a lot done with 4 inches of properly sharpened steel.
@petedavidson712 sounds like a good set up. That WS field sharpener is such a great thing to have handy.
I use a Victorinox Spirit and a Tops little Roughneck
Hi David,
What knife or knives are you grabbing of the sleves to spit hairs, in a hair spliting contest?
"If you're fishing you might get NIBBLES 😉" aaannnddd that's why we love Thomas 😂😂
Question for the KC Crew:
I enjoy the aesthetics of old classics like Case and Schrade, but I’d prefer something with more modern materials and locks, but I also can’t currently justify spending the money on blades that Jack Wolf or Terrain 365 command as a collector. For old aesthetics with modern materials, where should I be looking?
Thanks for the content, I always look forward to the vids, and welcome back Thomas
C Risner Brand may be what you're looking for, they aren't cheap but less than jack wolf
@@megacabthey only have like two models though sadly.
Cold Steel Voyager large clip point has been permanent EDC. The best all around knife for my needs.
it’s not my permanent one but i usually carry the voyager large in the drop point fairly often, that aus10 takes a ridiculous edge essily
Greetings DCA and everyone at knifecenter I was thinking a video on tactical shovels and hatchet and how to keep them sharp would be cool for something different to talk about
Hi David,
What knives make you and your coworkers most happy?
DCA, could you please help with finding a classic knife with a modern touch, such as the CRKT Ken Onion Redemption, the Terrain 365 Otter or any Jack Wolf. Living in Canada our selection is a bit more limited but the prices are substantially more. For instance the Gunslinger Jack s90v with Nebula Fat Carbon is $349.99us ($476.88ca) from Knife Center but is $524.99ca at Blades Canada. I would like to keep the cost $300.00ca or less. Any help is appreciated and I understand premium materials have a premium price. I look forward to the videos like a favorite tv show. Shout out to Thomas.
Found out the MERCADOR K=5 has quite a history. In NYC in the 50's and 60's we all carried these, whats the story?5
I own a knife in carbon v I'm looking to sell I thought it was cooler than how dca explained it, but marketing is cool too.
In stead of the Mora for hunting I'd would recommend the buck 119 for $75.00
I would carry a super tinker but Macgyver carried a tinker. So obviously I carry the tinker. Are you saying Macgyver didn't know what he was doing? Besides I've got a little Leatherman on my keychain with great scissors. Also a wenger with scissors in my bag. I can't believe you could doubt Macgyver publicly like that, for shame.
Best knife for the trades is either the para3 or the Manix2 lightweight.
Also speaking of cold steel and tanto you can get the Code 4 tanto it’s nice and light for a cold steel and it’s heavy duty with s35vn blade steel for around $90-$100 bucks.
Victorinox jetsetter and spyderco chaparral
SOG Kilowatt Electrician's Knife 3.4" Satin Plain Blade, GRN Handles, Liner Lock - EL01-CP
Spyderco delica 4 and victorinox cadet
Thanks knife center! Question: what are the pros and cons of carrying a utility knife/box cutter/disposable bladed number versus a typical knife? I believe DCA mentioned that finding his ideal utility blade was a goal for this year. How's that search going?
I got massive hands my palm is 11inc. Wide. Looking for a thumb flip that’s not tiny in my hands but not a sword.
Benchmade 940 and Victorinox SD on keys.
Wishing more companies followed the 3 inch option. Most jurisdictions is 3 inches. 3and 1 eighth etc. Don't make it. Many knives I liked are too long to pass legal. Limits sales and sales and use. 😢
Ok I love all SA knives. With that said I don't see why they still make the tinker. The addition of the scissors on the super rendered the standard tinker obsolete.
Hey, DCA, me Grimlock, king of dinobots, need knife to wage battle against the evil forces of the Decepticons. What you recommend?
What is the best knife for a Rock Climber/Alpinist ?
Is rope cutting high on the list of climber knife needs?
@@80808O Yes. Rope and webbing.
Nibbler? It's a modified trailing Wharncliffe...
The qsp steel seems to be chinese sleipner.
Testers are quite impressed.
it’s chinese dc53 lol not really sleipner but similar idea
Looks like a sheepscliff to me.
