Q: “How does a tail-heavy plane fly?”
A: Once.
Came to the comments for this
i mean truthfully it doesnt, it just straight up crashes, wobbling about in the sky with zero control isnt flying
But with ambition..always looking up. 😂
Thats a good one
Did some decent tricks in an S.E.5a that was a bit tail heavy.
My dad flew a B-17 in WW2....many stories about real heroes coming back. Half a Wing, Three Engines and a Prayer!!! Avg age for a B-17 pilot was 22! He lost so many best friends too.
Like the All Amrican. Look that story up. Also your dad sounds like a nice dude to be around. Lucky person to have him as your dad.

There's a reason why B-17s were nicknamed the flying fortress. Not only for their armament, but for being tough as hell. They were well known for taking a beating and surviving
Yeah we really saw an example of that at the Texas airshow a couple months back.
@@dinokulalic468 lmao why what happened at that
@@dannyzavolta1231 a b17 was hit by another fighter aircraft during an air show
Same with the P47s of that time, which were similar to the modernish A10, in that the P47 was built around it's engine, the A10 was built around it's gun, and they both have extremely good survivability
B17 is the Toyota hilux of the planes
I still would like to see you build an airframe skeleton out of foam board and wrapped with tissue paper so you can get better scale damage for battles. Can do dog fights with airsoft (biodegradable or paint marker BBS) and have paint ball AA guns on the ground.
Chicken tacos
Yes that would be great!!
Best way to do a build like that is balsa and spruce spars. Foam board would be good to replace the light ply used in most mono coat stick builds. Tissue paper can also be used it is typically painted with ca glue to seal it but ive used shaker can spray pain and fogged it on as well. Thing about tissue paper is unless it is strengthened or sealed it wont take the load of a large scale build typically used for rubber band powered or slot car motor powered free flight planes.
Would be awesome to see used in a large build though and it could be done
Theyve done that before in past vids
fr that would be cool
7:41 A B17 could carry 4000-8000 pounds of bombs depending on the mission, and would often use 100lb bombs: that would be 40-80 bombs. With 250lb bombs it would be able to carry 16-32 bombs. So 40 apples is a very realistic number!
I beg to differ. If the apples weighed in excess of 10lbs each, then yes, 40 would be an accurate number. That’s if the model is 1/10th scale. Then again, 100lbs of bombs is different than 100lbs of apples, too.
@@Raycefan They were more talking about number of bombs to number of apples, not lbs of bombs to lbs of apples.

This is my second time checking out this channel, and I gotta say I respect the aircraft shown in this video alone, even if only one was actually for the video. My grandmother and great aunt both worked as Rosie the Riveters to build B-17s in WWII, and my grandfather, who I unfortunately was never able to meet, flew a P-38, like the one hanging on your wall, as reconnaissance. He had engines shot out by anti aircraft and had to limp home alone with only one. It's such a wierd idea that p-38s were ever used for recon what with their insane firepower, but my whole life I've lived off of stories of my grandparents and these historic planes.
This captures something of the B-17's legendary "battered but not broken" pathos.

It was a great build! Still I can’t shake of the mixed feelings of knowing the things the real B-17 bomber crew had to endure during WW2.
This was fun to watch. Flying apples at that speed pack quite a wallop! I counted 3 hits. Those weren’t paint ball splats, bb or pellet hits, but a heavy wet apple. And it lifted a pretty darn good size payload! A little more tweaking on the bomb bay design and doors, you can have a pretty good ground attack plane along with its bombing capabilities. I bet you could even rig up a remote camera bomb site and become pretty accurate at target hitting. Rig up 4 compartments with 4 doors and you could make multiple attack runs.
Actually they really didn't a very few amount were lost because they flew at high altitude the the flak wasn't as accurate
@@thebirbestbirb In a single 376 plane raid in August 1943, 60 B-17s were shot down. That was a 16 percent loss rate and meant 600 empty bunks in England .. In 1942-43 it was statistically impossible for bomber crews to complete a 25-mission tour in Europe .
@@thebirbestbirb A lot of B-17s were shot down in WWII. Of the 12,731 aircraft built, approximately 4,735 were lost during the War. Most were lost over Germany. By both fighters and flak, or anti aircraft fire. The Germans had a quite deadly anti aircraft battery. It remained deadly through the end of the war. While the Luftwaffe was gradually overwhelmed by the allied air forces and lost much of its capacity and efficiency, the ground based anti aircraft fire remained quite dangerous and accurate though to the end. By the end of the war, radar was being used to direct anti aircraft fire, which was improving its accuracy considerably. Plus the gun crews had become very experienced, as they had a lot of practice shooting down attacking aircraft.
@@VladimirSaldes your exactly right There was a high percentage of bomber crews to die before completing 25 missione
I've discovered a whole group of channels lately that excite my inner child; when I used to dream of Lilliputian sailing vessels, Stuart Little vehicles, etc. I used to try to do the kinds of things these channels actually accomplish when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, except I failed miserably trying to make things out of aluminum can skins, popsicle sticks, and motors stolen from my 'Stomper' 4x4s or Erector Sets.
Lately I've seen all kinds of crazy things, like a leaf blower turned into an airplane engine, floating battleship vs RC airplane wars, etc. Damn, the fun I would have had back then if things available now would have been around back then. As it was, I ended up blowing up a lot of stuff with bottle rocket engines and balsa wood planes. For me, it all started when I did a school report on the 'Monitor vs Merrimac' Civil War battle. I used aluminum baking pans like for Thanksgiving trying to build my models, and it sucked.
i hated the result, and wanted to crush it, but my mom wouldn't let me, and I got a good grade on the project, which I didn't feel was deserved. It felt like a participation trophy. When I was a kid my dad wrote an pamphlet for a British series called Profiles. It was about the B17. He got a boatload of pics of the B17 from Boeing and I was shocked at pics of damaged planes. It was staggering the damage that plane could take. One was the entire nose forward of the pilots was gone. But other pics were just as bad and even worse. You did a good job on your build. You left it silver so I can assume you were trying to recreate the G model which were left bare metal to save weight in paint. Oh on the bombload, usually it was 8 500 pounders or 4 1000 pounders.

@@commanderstorm8874 Took a bit since the first search for Ye Old Pub was about a B17 that never saw combat but was used for research after the war. Then a second search I found the plane you are referring to. A bomber so badly beat up the German didn't want to shoot it down. I heard about a similar story of a P47 that a FW190 literally emptied its entire weapons loadout of MG and cannon fire into it. The P47 still flew. The pilot also flew along side and saluted then left the P47 to fly home. It made it but was a write off.

Outstanding! Now I realize how much it must have taken for the Nazis to shoot my grandfather down but also how he must have been able to survive. Let's all hope it just keeps being apples and non-crewed planes, my friends. This was awesome!
as a kid I never grew tired of spending an hour building something and spending 5 seconds crashing it
Those glow worms left over from the 4th of July worked great for simulating a German bomber on fire and crashing into your sandbox.
The “All American” crew: Hey! I’ve seen this one before.
I only know this one because of YarnHub's video XD
@@hueyrosayaga same
Same here.
Y'know, i didn't know i needed this
Well built plane gentlemen! Great RC depiction of how tough the mighty Fort was!!!
3:05 - a nose-heavy plane flies badly, a tail-heavy plane flies once.
The fruit equivalent to the “Fat Man” Nuke would be a watermelon😂😂
My grandpa had a airplane hobby shop in the same building as his ice cream shop before world war II he would have loved this, a true testament to the B-17 design way to go guys thoroughly enjoyed this video over and out, Terry's rancho looks pretty cool long way from where I'm at
YT algo: "We recommend this please."
Me: You had me at "apple cannon" !
Liked, subbed, shared and....DING!
The camera work and editing job done here is outlandish. Throws most TV shows, if not outright all of them, into the trash bin. Bravo, gentlemen. Wish I could patreon. One of the best random recommended videos, ever.
I think you mean "outstanding" Hans 😃
@@shecanatakeitcaptain Hey there! Haha I think you hit it on the nail, Capt :-) I meant to say something like: "Out of this world", but I must've missed the mark haha :-) Yes, English isn't my native tongue, you got me! :-D
Have a great day and thanks for the correction!
The smile on Terry's face has the be the best part about this
Fantastic video guys! Your skills are amazing. I loved the vintage plane and the tribute to the grand old B-17!
This is an unoptional video to click on once you have seen the thumbnail.
That WAS historically accurate with the way it looked when it got back. Im impressed with yalls construction of the B-17. Well done. Thank you for the good content.
Her: He’s probably out cheating!
Me and the boys:
You should buy a vacuformer and use those 3D printed parts as bucks for things like canopies. I'd love to see a P-51D with a clear canopy.
Definitely going to end up with a few random apple trees growing 😂
Like Bugs Bunny said ,"You can't beat an A car."
That was awesome! That took a beating and still landed
The excitement of that commentator makes me think he waited his whole life for that moment
