"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time." -Bertrand Russell. I am retired. I did not enjoy much of my nearly 50 years of work life, my so called productive time, it was pretty much wasted time. I have a kinda significant savings that I don't use and don't intend to ever use. I have been living on about $1,500 a month for the last 6 six years and I have never been happier. (I live in South America) Anyway I learned the hard way which I don't think many people learn is that being productive is bullshit, it is a false value created for you by the powers that be. Being content is the most important thing in the world, whatever it takes.

I think everyone in the comments is forgetting what he said in the beginning, he didn’t define anyone’s wasted time, they defined it themselves. Hi. Good point, but life is not just about money... people hear money.... but life being productive can be about becoming a better person, learning about life and how to be better (read, study, educate yourself), having children, doing your best for your chidren, doing things that are good for the plant, etc. and when you are relaxing doing it in a way that keeps you productive .... dont exhaust yourself.... sleep well, eat well, cook, take care of your health, keep your home clean to a good level... etc... all of that is being productive.... some of it for you, some of it for your family, some of it for society, some of it for humanity. I work in healthcare and see that many people overwork in their jobs, dont eat well, dont cook, dont even go for walks, let alone exercise and end up very sick and even dependent on others and sometimes even on dissability payments because they did not take care of themselves properly.... Focusing only on money and work as the meaning of productive can be dangerous..... (it seems to me)..... VALUES.... there are Spiritual/religious meanings to life and then there is - The biological MEANING OF LIFE is (I have found and come to believe): SURVIVAL..... The survival of the individual, the family/clan, the nation (genetically) and of mankind as a species --- and if that is not a meaning for you..... perhaps because all you see is the suffering.... then its possible to be productive be helping decrease people's suffering... eg. work at a hospice.... help at a hospice...

@crowdedveins9210 No one should be trying to waste anyone's time or money. The purpose of the exercise is to show how much time they waste throughout the day that could be spent on something more productive. Especially those that make commissions or bonuses.
For example: Let's say you want to check on your kids when they get off school so you take a 15-minute break every day, I encourage this with my staff as I believe family is a top priority.
You waste about 15 mins when you get in every day just getting ready to start working.
Set up what's needed the night before so you can avoid wasting those minutes and use it to call your kids.
If you take a 15-minute smoke break and talk to co-workers for another 10, that's time that could be spent making more sales for your bonus.

There are several other benefits to limiting your goals.
e.g. "I will clean my room for 5 minutes."
Once you get into it, it's tempting to go for longer.
But if you do that, you break the agreement with yourself.
So next time you say I'll only do 5 minutes, you can't trust yourself anymore.
That trust is far more valuable than getting a few extra minutes of work done.
The next day, you know it's truly only 5 minutes, and it won't magically turn into another long dreadful work session.
Another aspect is the time pressure focuses you. And inverting it from "I have to do X for Y time" to "I only have Y time to do X", it turns it into a game, a challenge.
"I only have 5 minutes to clean my room."
How much can I clean in 5 minutes?
How much focused work can I get done in 30 minutes?
(Unrelated: Paradoxically I found studying for 45+ minutes much easier than 15-30, because it takes me about an hour to develop deep focus.)

"Wasting" is a term that is vastly overused these days. Just because you aren't working doesn't mean you are wasting time. If you feel you are wasting your time, then you are. We get to choose what defines wasting. Not others. If you are seeking a proper balance between work and the rest of your life then that time is not wasted. We are just poorly informed and bred to be easily guilted into doing something, even if it's wrong.

I learned the hard way that I must take time to minimize commitments and or responsibilities and use that time to focus on relieving stress, relaxing, having fun, and preventing burnout. Best medical advice I ever got.
It is all about what you perceive as productive. A monk may find a full day of meditation as productive. Some may find just waking up and spending a day chilling at the beach just watching the waves as productive because you are doing exactly what you planned and or want to do.
I am generally stressed when doing something I HAVE to do. Instead of doing what I want to be doing at that time. When driving on the freeway trying to get to wherever each is going in that early morning rush hour traffic, I love when I see someone with one of those license plate frames and bumper stickers that say, “I’d rather be ………….” I say to my self, “Yeah, I am so with you on that, I’d rather be doing ….. whatever it is I would want to be doing at that time also.
I have found that I am happiest and most relaxed when I am doing exactly what I want to be doing at the time, even if that is just sitting on the couch binge watching a show. I am doing what I want to do when I want to do it. And I no longer feel guilty about it. Others may find it unproductive by their standards, that is their problem. I no longer allow the beliefs of others to try to guilt, dictate and control my thoughts about myself. (I am productive in self care, taking a mental health day and treating myself to what I wanted to do.

If it's on the calendar, you do it, before anything else. As time goes on, reflect on your goals: cross off the one's you've completed, adjust what needs adjusting. Instead of thinking "I'm not going to smoke", you say "I'm not the kind of guy who smokes". It's small change in the wording but it changes the whole framing in you brain. It's basically a shift in identity which from my own experience I've found works way better than trying to coerce myself into doing or not doing something.

It seems that the overall significance here is that the productivity in which Jordan Peterson is going for here is that the time for productivity fits your overall intended goal or purpose. It seems many people misinterpret “productivity” as if it has to do with some type of employment or something similar to that.
The overall productivity is subjected to the person enabling the productivity for themselves to fit an overall objective goal.
Now how wasted time is seen in such an equation is only prevalent to the person able to recognize that error for themselves.
This is a great way of setting your mental discipline into motion to drive yourself to a goal oriented mindset that will encapsulate your overall personal lifetime achievement processing

What you and JP fail to realize that in this undisclosed amount of time wasted, is time for rest and relaxation (not sleep). Essentially you are asking your body to sacrifice and suffer in the times you normally chose to recharge or decompress. @@tomfoolery7438 you missed the part in my comment saying:
“The overall productivity is subjected to the person enabling the productivity for themselves to fit an overall objective goal.”
Which means that productivity is *subjective* to the person to reach their objective. So how they achieve the objective is concurrent with their overall actions, intentions, then finally the achievement. If it takes time, recovery, patience, or whatever that is necessary in some aspects when planned accordingly with the person enabling the drive to their goal. Of course we can’t constantly keep going productively as even successful people plan their sleep as to gain enough rest to tackle what they had in mind for future tasks ahead of their schedule.
It isn’t intricately said here but implies however dissecting for the answer is what I helped with my comment to make it be put more clearly to the broader overall complex spectrum of the topic

That being said, my housing is half of what it was 6 years ago and instead of over an hour of driving to and from work each and every day, I spend 2 minutes because I work a 1/4 mile down the road. I did it so that I can be more lazy. That was the point. So my time could be spent how I want it to be, and I wouldnt charge for my personal time what I get paid at work. I certainly wouldnt compare it to minimum wage either. My job is lucky to have me.
When you start equating every minute and hour of your day into an hour wage that can be potentially wasted, your start monetizing everything, and that is definitely not living. Your worth at your job is one thing, your time outside of work is another and it shouldnt be equated to "dollars". The dollars value changes all the time, usually decreasing.
You can have your every minute accounted for so as to not lose a single dollar and get smashed to death in a freak car accident involving a semi. Happened to my best friend who spent a decade working 120hours a week to retire at 50, only to die right before his 52'nd birthday.

@mariona.5261 I can best describe it using activities that I find more enjoyable; hunting and fishing are far more enjoyable than farming. I have spent a fair amount of time developing the skills needed to successfully hunt and butcher game; but I would never want to add the skill set needed to be a rancher. Pursuing the animal, killing the animal, and immediately consuming the animal is enjoyable; caring for, raising, and protecting animals is entirely tedious. I spent much of my childhood on farms, so I experienced raising and killing farm animals.
Fishing is the same type activity. Catch and eat, or not catch, and don't eat. As opposed to being a commercial fisherman, which injects intermediate steps and interpersonal interactions.
I am not delusional and understand that the option to live an entirely subsistence lifestyle today is impossible. But I do believe that if the barriers to such a lifestyle were removed, I would like it more. It removes the need to have any trust in or responsibility for any other human. Just me alone living day to day, maybe dying at 20 due to a simple infection or living to be 80 mostly by dumb luck; or somewhere between those two.
For reference, I have 3 grandkids and 2 children. So I experienced fatherhood, which is both good and bad; but the good of it would not have prevented me from forgoing the experience in exchange for living alone.

Don't forget that Whatever you seek, should be a moment of joy;a looking back at your life and liking how kind of a generous and eager you were to better yourself.
Sometimes, the wasted time is worth a take of a picture.sometimes it could be just walking around, sometimes studying hard so you could get the result you wanna achieve, sometimes even trying new things.
Remember teenagers;if you're reading this,go enjoy your youth it's not gonna be repeated!.
I had some toxic and useless friends(not all of them, surely) whom i used to hangout with.
Looking back at how much of a hellish time i wasted on my teen years,i feel so depressed.
    8 months later im'a be 20.
use your 18 like it's your last days!!!!.
Wish you all success and happiness.
Study, work out, hang out with decent and helpful friends, have tons of fun and LEARN SOME USEFUL THINGS.
Work some jobs and do some certain stuff just in experience matter.
    God bless

I get what hes saying, but it's only because everybody isn't concerned with studying or chasing high paying jobs that the system works. We absolutely need all the people that do the jobs that require little to no education, otherwise society wont function. Part of being an academic or a high earning person is the mentality to say that those that dont have that are wasting their life.
Happyness is a successful life, not how much you earn or what career you have. Some of the most miserable people I know earn a high salary or have a high standard of eduction. That personality trait of constant striving can leave you forever chasing an illusionary dream of what if.
Be the happiest you can be. that's the best version of you, not what other people tell you it is.

I've been listening to this business guy for the past several weeks that talks about the notion of time is money being on of the most damaging things done to our society, along with not teaching students financial literacy.
I've never actually thought about it until I heard this guy talk about it because it was so engrained in my subconscious from years and decades of hearing, "time is money." But time is not money...time is worth infinitely more than money...because you can't get back time, but you can always get more money. And people are constantly selling themselves to the highest bidder. Yeah I know...we need all sorts of jobs for society to function....but if everyone had a better idea of how money works...would society be better or worse off?

    • @HigherPlanes

@@pareraphael6035 Great comment. You hit the nail on the head. The information to become financially literate is out there, but for some reason, many people are content with their way of life. Comfortable. Too much comfort can be damaging. I haven't had a real job in 10+ years...and it's not really because I have so much money that I can afford not to work. I only changed my mindset about what money is and the role of money in our society. It's just a game, the banks know how to play it and most people don't and that's why they're stuck.

Other than that I'm a marketer by trade, although I haven't worked as one in over a decade. My main focus now is a side knife sharpening business tailored to high end restaurants...actually my core product is high end knife sharpening services...i use that to acquire clients, then I have other offerings, like knife upsell, cutting board upsells, etc....sometimes I do cooking classes and knife sharpening lessons to people who are interested, etc.

Just keep in mind that, time wasted for some, is not necessarily so for someone else. It all depends on your own specific likes or goals. Personally I don't like a lot of things most people enjoy. And find it to be time wasted. Who's to say what is or isn't, except yourself. Of course, he wouldn't say that himself as he earns money on other people feeling like they need to better themselves.

    • @Andrew-td9fg

Time wasted is pretty straightforward.. It literally means u are doing nothing productive with your time.. There is no subjectivity to this.. What an individual defines as “constructive ”in his own mind is irrelevant.. Productivity is different for everyone.. Just do more of whatever productivity means to you.. That’s all he is saying..

I just stopped wasting my time and used what I had: my hands and energy (no money, no inheritance) I finished law school for comparison and now I don’t have a job , I wake up when I please and live off the land. About 4k a month it’s fine.
