This video is highlights from the 'Classic Friars Club Roast of Don Rickles from 1970. Rickles is roasted by roastmaster, Johnny Carson and comic legend, Milton Berle, before Rickles gets his final say/revenge. Also starring George C. Scott, Dick Cavett and Henny Youngman.
The Friars Club is a private club in New York City. Famous for its risqué roasts, the club's membership is composed mostly of comedians and other celebrities. Founded in 1904, it is located in NYC.
Don Rickles (1926-2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy. A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman.
Johnny Carson (1925-2005) as an American television host, comedian, writer, and producer. He is best known as the host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962-1992). Carson received six Emmy Awards, the Television Academy's 1980 Governor's Award, and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987. Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.
Milton Berle (1902-2002) was an American comedian and actor. Berle's career as an entertainer spanned over 80 years, first in silent films and on stage as a child actor, then in radio, movies and television. As the host of NBC's Texaco Star Theatre (1948-1955), he was the first major American television star and was known to millions of viewers as "Uncle Miltie" and "Mr. Television" during the first Golden Age of Television. He was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in both radio and TV.

Love the roasts. Sandy
53 years later.....and I'm still crackin'up...!!
Amazing Don outlived them all , the master comedian. We will never see another one like him again!
A excellent comedian all ready miss him
A TRUER WORD WAS NEVER SPOKEN
100% True. Nor the Rest of the Dais.
@@67lionsoflisbon37 Nope!
Milton was born like 20 years before Rickles.
52 years ago. Only Dick Cavett (33 in this show) is still with us.
We won't see this pure wonderful humor again😢
Don Rickles should've been kept in a glass case, with these words written on it...
"Break Glass, only in case of depression"!
Hank snow
Johnny Carson’s timing is wonderful!
it is so funny to see don rickles, actually belly laughing. so other way around. johnny is so quick witted, this is just amazing.
Love watching these roasts because they all knew each other well and knew how to take a joke unlike the younger generation who get offended by everything.
"HEY GEORGE, IM TALKING!" gets me every time 😂😂
LOL - he just went right after him! that was relentless
it is kind of adorable how eager and excited Rickles was to get a what for from everyone.
What a classy line up you'll never see that sought of class again
So sad for it .
I love the genius of reckels and skipping over the last person he was going to talk about, just kept mentioning he would skip over.
Don’t know which if those guys is funnier, but honestly have to start with Milton, then Don, then Johnny, whose “casual” monologues were priceless. Johnny’s imitation of Ronald Reagan was beyond hilarious. Don’s infectious, naughty, kid-like glee at making you laugh like crazy and Milton Berle’s insane self-confidence that he was the Master Of Comic Shtick -comedy gold. We don’t have anyone today close to these generous people who made hard times fun every night of the week. So glad we at least get to see them here on YT.
I didn’t grow up in this generation yet thanks to UA-cam I came across and. I realize this is what comedy is all about . Not a single word of obscenity yet so powerful and funny. Thanks for this video
I saw Milton Berle live in a dinner theatre in Maryland about two years later, in June of 1972. “Last of the red-hot lovers”. I was 8, and all I remember was the laughing. Funny man.
Don had no problem insulting. But he ALWAYS finished w admiration and love
Berle is rickles "guru".. but rickles made berle way of giving jokes of roasting into the next level of comedic genius..
Greatest intro from the greatest master of ceremonies, followed by Mr. Television. Simply the best.
Don was laughing harder than anyone else. Love it. Thx for posting. Memories to see than to just remember. Special
And he didn't get up and slap anyone.
@@vanmoody Milton Berle did though
@@marcpetrie7090 Ruth Buzzie got pretty violent with that purse. Roflol Funny stuff.
@@vanmoody Ruth is brilliant with that thing,I can't remember the guy's name but she nearly ripped his top off "kissing" him lol
All star comedian group
Don Rickles is the epitome of improvisation
This is precisely the level of belly laughter I needed today! These roasts were the very epitome of comedy!
"Someday, you may find yourself ...but it's not worth looking for" 😁😃
Oh my gosh, I never realised how funny Carson was 😂🤣😂🤣
Wtf? Where have you been for the last 60 years?
Most people were born just after he retired from the tonight show
When the POW, returned from the Hanoid Hilton. The first question one of the ex prisoner asked, was the tonight show still televis with Johnny Carson. The joy on the face of the EX POW, was overwhelming, couldn't wait to get caught up, and enjoy true classic comedy from the Golden era
You gotta love this Era of entertainment.
Thanks Ad for posting this hilarious classic roast. I'm still cracking up with all of them. Love them.
Used to see all these funny comedians. I'll be 65 this year.
Totally hilarious, just a treasure of great humour.
Milton Berle, Henry young man, don tickles, Johnny carson all the great stars never again in our lifetime!
Lol don tickles
I can never get enough of these roasts.
Pure epic inspired performance, RIP Don!
I "found'' Don Rickles i think a year ago.I've seen ALL the videos on the youtube of or with him and not one time.I'm 35 from Greece and i feel its a great shame that so many people don't know english well enough to understand the jokes and the spirit of what is happening and what was this guy is all about.I am so happy i found him,but at the same time it's so disappointing when you realise, that guys like him is one in a million years and even more disappointing is the level of ''humor'' we see today. It's sad that as we getting better in every aspect of sience ,we (as humanity) are deteriorating to everything that has to do with real inspirational things, like art. These guys was not professionals, they where just themselves. And when yourself is so amazingly beautiful, it's then, when you can be idolized by a guy that was born 80 years after you,in an other country that don't even speak well your language.Don should be an idol don't only about how great comedian he was, but also for the fact that he was the most hummble person you could find.Idol and myth. One of the greats. On the Parthenon of paradise (if there is such a thing) there syrely is a chair that says its name.DON RICKELS.
Theo Von is a hilarious contemporary comedian just being himself. Joey Diaz too. Check them out.
"What entertainer wears the clip-on bowtie with the rust on the shirt?" Pure genius.
That was the best one!! Had me laughing so hard, I had to watch it again so I could hear the following comments.
Take my clip on…..please. 😂😂😂
Rickles could be so insulting yet people loved him, now that's class. He never hurt anyone though. No one today compares to Rickles.
🥰🌹
That is because today people are way too sensitive and get easily offended.
That's for sure.
Rickles made Dom Deluise cry because he was harassing him about his weight .. I have it on one of those Dean Martin Show' d.v.d. s..not kind at all that time.. just my humble opinion..
Don and Johnny both had incredible humor that aged so well. I was born long after this aired, and never watched a single episode of the Tonight Show with Johnny live, but I get all their jokes and think they're hilarious.
"I didn't forget you, Milton!!" 😂😂
George Scott never laughed so hard. Piece of trivia, Jim Mulholland was a writer for Cavett, Carson, and Letterman. He also wrote “Oscar” and played the titular part. Also was a writer of the Dean Martin roasts.
His resume is amazing, especially when you look at how long he worked in late night TV. Johnny was the king of late night hosts. I think Mulholland would be the king of late night writers. Peter Lassally would be the king of late night producers, working for Carson, Letterman, Snyder and Ferguson.
I was just saying the other day, they don't have comedy like this anymore. This was real comedy! BTW, Don's prediction did come true! George C. Scott did win the Oscar for Patton. Of which he declined to accept, because he felt every actor was unique in their own way, and should not be compared to one another. Since this event happened in 1970, and the Oscar's for Patton were held in 1971, this was a true prediction on Don Rickles' part. I watched the Oscar's the night the award was not accepted, tax day - 4/15/71, Goldie Hawn announced it.
Before my time, but Don was a master ...RIP ...
Comedians extraordinaire.
But people don’t want it
"What are you a road? Hope you take a left and go right into yourself." comedy gold.
What's so amazing about Rickles was that nearly every other comedian has a well-prepared, well-rehearsed routine to showcase their talent. Not Rickles, he was ad-libbing from
start to finish and was generally funnier than all of them. You can tell by the reactions of all the celebrities he insults that he was genuinely admired and respected.
Thats what amazing about Rickles, he never relied on scripts or cuecards unless obviously it was a movie or formatted tv show. He admitted once on Tonight Show, he doesn't tell jokes but talks to the people & here he let it go, even kid & cop in the audience got an earful.
Just loved theMAN!
I say to you Milton, (what do I say to Milton?) 😂🤣😂🤣😭
I can't stop watching this 🤣🤣🤣
This was worth the time :) Thank you sooo much for posting this!
Thank you for watching.
Didn’t used to appreciate Rickles until I was in my late 50’s. He was a genius.
Jesus………the amount of legendary legends………….Henny Youngman…..Carson…..Berele…….Rickles……Chavet……unbelievable! The only one missing is Rodney Dangerfield!….. this is Hollywood at its finest…..

Comedy at its best!
One of the best don roast...
Have you ever heard of the X-rated version
The good old days bring them back. 😁
Superb from start to finish….🤣
I wasn’t born until the mid 70s. Boy I missed the best generation of America
You ccan see it all on youtube!
I never met him in real life ; I have listened to the one LP my late dad had called “ Hello Dummy !”. I have listened to that record 100s of times and he still makes me laugh out loud! He is a classic and a class act all the way. I have read his autobiography as well. He used to be on a TV show called “ CPO Sharkey “ funny as all heck.
Look up 'Rickles Don Adams' , where he roasts and honors his good friend Adams , amongst others ,
best Rickles I've ever seen...👌
When roasting was roasting with class
No vulgarity and more importantly NO ONE GOT OFFENDED.
Don Rickles and Robin Williams, the masters
When men were still the men... What a great show!
And fraternities were still fraternities....
The roasts were the perfect platform for Rickles.
True Comedy, nice -clean -and funny!
Holy crap Milton Berle was hilarious, can't believe I've never seen him before. Thanks for the upload mate!
His show was one of the first on TV in its infancy back in the early 1950s...LIVE! All TV was LIVE back then! That's why he was called Mr. Televison.
Uncle Miltie!!
Wow.Thid was great. Thanks
Hollywood was literally a galaxy of stars once upon a time - true stars.. icons in the truest sense of the world. America's for all its great powers never had any thing more powerful than its cultural icons..I couldnt stop laughing !!!
God Bless America , love from India
Hollywood stars these days are too busy trying to see who gets married n divorce 100x
Agreed.

Happy days, my favorite.
Was it the actors who where funnier back then, or the writers.
Don't find any humor that much anymore.
@@rodbrunet4813 I go back to Father Knows Best, Leave It to Beaver, The Donna Reed Show, Lassie, My Three Sons, LIVE TV with Milton Berle, etc. I'm most likely older than you...I was born into the brand new invention of television...we were infants together. IMHO...both. Also, the world was much more wholesome then. Bad things always occurred but it was accepted to be unacceptable. Today anything goes and the morals are in the gutter and it shows in entertainment. Unfortunately, the world is unraveling.
This is classic!
The Friars Roasts are the best.
Dean Martin's Raosts were also EXCELLENT!
Rickles at his absolute best!😂
Hilarious! 😂😂😂 thank you!
Can't top these guys..THE BEST
Today's Roasts aren't even a peanuts shadow compared to the Roasts of the 70s!!
Today's Roasts 90 percent of it is just: "Oh, I see this or that person is here".
Henny Youngman with the obscene combover. lol
now that was a roast
If I remember right, George C. Scott said during his turn at the lecturn that the reason he was invited is because somebody was needed to say nice things about Don Rickles, and for that actor, not a comedian, was needed for the show.
I need more!!!!
I miss the old timers how everything has changed you can tell these jokes anymore I'm sorry for the generations who'll never understand this.
Hermione Gingold - That was killer.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Rickles funnier!
They don't make people like these Stars anymore I hope all of you guys are making God laugh like y'all made me life God bless you all
"I will not let it go to my head and forget about my values..."
Thank God for UA-cam.
1:36 Rickles got his start as a heckler at telethons 😅
Just Gold.
Carson was brilliant
I laugh at 10 I laugh at 63 Rickles was one funny guy.Dearly missed.
I sure miss those days and TV shows.
When roasts weren't just a tirade of filth.

The Great Don Rickles Everybody
Nothing vulgar or obscene . Times sure have changed .
XX Century ...one of progress and chaos. From 1940 to 1970 too intense and revolutionary.....then the aftermath, which ain't over.. We are now in a vortex of mediocrity and degeneration.

The only person on the panel still alive is Cavett

Good show I enjoyed it
If you can sing,,, you do not need a miniscule,,, version of the fourth of July,,,as a back drop ---These roasts were filtered,,,timed,,,and exceedly well constructed,,, Talent is just that,,,no fillers,,,just the pure product,,,So elated for tapes,,,I can view quality,,,
Don was a legend best at roasts but he was a very great actor in drama comedies etc. He great at reverse acting
🤣🤣🤣🤣
