The Perfect Segway Ninebot Max Scooter Modifications

- After quite a few changes to my Ninebot Max Scooter I am now completely satisfied with its performance. Here I show everything that I have done to it. I have ridden 1800 miles in total so far on the Max. Something I forgot to mention in the video is that the software needs re-flashing along with the additional 12v battery that is all part of the My Max Mods kit. This was a simple task and there are plenty of videos online about how to do that. The re-flash is essential to get the best out of the modification, also the reflash alone even without the extra battery improves the performance greatly.
Here are a couple more notes. The rear tire wears out after about 1000 miles, the front lasts twice as long. I would recommend only original CST (Chen Shin Tire) replacements as they have an anti puncture sticky goop bonded to the inside of the tire tread area. You should never get a puncture with these tires.
With the Monorim front suspension if you tighten all the 6mm screws in the normal fashion, you will damage all the bearings, For each pivot point there are two ball bearings pressed into the suspension arm from either side. The problem is that there is a gap between the bearings in the middle so when the screw is tightened, it simply puts side force on the ball bearings and damages them immediately making the suspension movement notchy. I replaced all the ball bearings (from Amazon) and added shims in the middle to prevent this damage. Its difficult to describe, I'll probably do a video on it.

Great video and very interesting. Hands down the best MAX G30 mod video on the internet. Not only adding new parts but some seriously good mods too. Great work man, loved it :) Enjoy and ride safe.
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated
@@Nonbock I just bought the 48v max pack external kit and did the installed to my scooter. I reflash the firmware software provided by my max mods and notice the scooter lost a tremendous amount of torque but did gain a little bit more speed at top end. Is your scooter experiencing the same thing? And what reflash did you installed on your scooter after the 48v conversion? Thanks
Sorry, I just saw your question, the torqe is much better than stock, maybe twice as much. I used the flash from MyMaxMods
*The **Latest.Bike** Scooter was everything I imagined. I’m 6ft4 200 lbs and it cruises perfectly… worth every penny!!! Thanks Gotrax!!!*
Excellent video. I've modified mine as well but as much as this non engineer can. I am most amazed at how your 1000+ mile scooter looks nearly brand new while mine looks like it has gone through a minefield. Really appreciate the love you have and sharing your expertise!
What a Legend no cuts, pure content.
This is an insane build in all the right ways
Fr tho im 12 year olds and i love modding e scooters i recently put on a steering dampener on my ninebot e2
Wow, when you said modifications, you weren't kidding. I was just expecting you added reflective stickers.
I watched a good video. I also replaced all 16 of the existing bearings with precision bearings in the same monorim product for the front suspension, replaced them with exa hydraulic coil shocks, and installed a street bar by myself instead of a damper.
New to scooters today and the mods are crazy I'm seeing. Love the build. Bought the s40 today on amazon since they were going at $450 and making a parts list after seeing this.
Great video! Totally badass mods! I'm getting ready to add front and rear suspension for my G30! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Clean, subtle, highly functional. This is just a beautiful setup, giving me a lot to think about for my g30. Props!
Glad you like it!
I recently had two different types of tubeless tires put on and I switched to the same grips as you and it feels alot better on turns . Suspension upgrade is next ❤
Absolutely amazing 👏. Love the modifications you added on. 1 thing no need for the damper.
Thanks Mike. For me the damper takes out the general nervousness of the steering. At 65 I don't want to get into a tank slapper and bail off it.
I'm genuinely impressed with your video and your modifications. I'm looking forward to checking out getting the 12 V upgrade.
Man for sure loves his scooter. Will be getting myself g30 max with gen 2 motor and going to put SHFW on it. The best upgrade you can have besides custom ESC.
Although I must admit that I’m also guilty of operating with just one hand I’ll strongly recommend that both hands should be on the handlebars at all times. It’s just not worth it. If you have to take off one of your hands for whatever reason just stop for a moment until you are done and take off again. While it can be annoying to come to a stop a few times during a ride in reality it won’t increase your travel time in a meaningful way. Having an accident on the other hand will cost you that at minimum. Scooters are dangerous enough as it is (mainly because of riding position) but at least with a firm grip on both handlebars you can have enough control to lessen the severity of any accident. Trust me - the last thing you want is to hit some nasty pothole, collide with something or someone. Actually even the tiniest patch of dust or sand can cause a skid you’ll remember for a long time.
Well said, I often think about the consequences of waving to someone. It is a risk.
Thank you for such a detailed video on this model. I've recently purchased a G30P. I hope I can utilize some of the information you've offered here to modify mine
awesome Scooter mod Alex. it's got me excited to supe up mine!
Nice video. Thank you for sharing!
Great mods, it's exactly what I want to do.
Wow! Very nice. Awesome engineering work!
Thank you very much!
Don’t even have a scooter yet but still, very dope🙏🔥
Love your modifications, great job
The best scooter I’ve ever owned
Great Video, Love all your Upgrades/mods.
Amazing job you got me hyped up to upgrade mine!
Great to hear!
Wow well done !!!
Great job. Very informative. Best ninebot mod video I've ever seen
Wow, thanks!
As an ebike user, I recently came across a new project called freebeat Morph 2-in-1 e-Bike, and I must say, it's truly impressive. The video was informative, showcasing the outstanding features of the Morph e-bike. I was particularly intrigued by the dual modes that allow it to be used both indoors and outdoors. The ability to charge the bike while in indoor mode is a game-changer! The brushless 750W motor, smooth ride with suspension and puncture-resistant tires, and the Smart Saddle Detection+ feature for fitness insights all make this e-bike stand out. I'm excited to learn more about freebeat and their innovative products!
I love my es3 but also hated some stuff to it.
I was on Budget when I bought my ES3 got it for like $120 like new from someone who bought it but didn’t like it so let it sit.
But one thing I hated was the electronic brakes I wished it had a disk or drum brake to help have more braking power.
Didn’t like not having suspensions in the rear either
So I bought a pneumatic 8in wheel with drum brakes and drilled 3 holes on my scooter to fit a lever brake with the drum brakes and wheels so much better
Other thing I hated was how short the handle bars were, as some who goes cycling having proper bar length was important so I 3d printed an extension and bought new bicycle grips also and added a customer peak design Mount also.
Ohh my God! What a G30!!! 😃
Great job sir, nice and clean modifications
To help stop both the rear & front suspension springs from making a noice. Add some car grease to both springs. That to stop / help tons.
Nice mods, compliment. If u lower the front suspension the ground clearance is really poor i feel. I just added one that increases it a little and i like it but makes an unintended wheely more likely
The battery has 15ah capacity added for driving assistance to increase the mileage to about 80-90km, and with custom firmware, the current speed is 36km/h and the rear-wheel suspension is being used by myself.
You're brake is supposed to be positioned that way because you're supposed to keep a grasp on the bar while you're breaking, only 1 or 2 fingers on the brake lever, because if you hit a bump it could knock the handle bar from your grip. The higher end scooters have short brake levers so you can't squeeze it on your fingers
beautiful work
Thank you very much!
Great job !
Amazing! I need to add the extra battery…my 215 lbs forces me to assist kick up some hills
I have some steep hills near me and with the stock battery I slow down to 8 MPH. After the additional battery, it doubles the speed to 16 MPH on the same hill.
@@Nonbock where can I get a battery pack bro
All the links are in the description
@@Nonbock ok
Fantastic mods, I still slightly disagree with the 48 Volt mod for several reasons, but that's my opinion. I don't like risking overheating and burning up the motor, burning connectors, adding weight, increasing charger carryon weight, going through tires faster, etc. The Front and rear suspension were pretty interesting, but that steering damper could be a lifesaver I'm sure.
Very functional while being tasteful.
Yes, thanks
tengo el mismo y me encantó todo lo que le hiciste al tuyo!!!, te felicito!
Just got one ,this helps thank you!
Man so cool this looks like an complete other scooter with these mods😅😂
the new G2 is taking in some of these
Very beautifull made!
Beautiful that's how I am going to be doing mine
Cool, I'm up to 2200 miles now, and its a blast
Now the G2 is here. Not sure if it's better than this mod but for the lazier who don't or cannot do this mod.
Just a heads up. The brake leaver is set that way for a good reason. You dont need to have all four fingers on the leaver to get most out of your brakes. Same as in the bike world. one to two fingers is enough. With four you are running risk of over streching your cable or damaging brake system.
Yes I agree only 1 or 2 fingers are necessary, but moving it the outside of the bell makes it a much easier, more comfortable reach
Dam man 😁 That is awesome work you done 😊 i got same scooter but only have same damper in front (not with that extra dampping thing you have). But all you have done, with extra battery, ventalation so i not get hot ect :D Wish i did know a smart guy like you here in Norway, that coud do the same stuff for me :D Great work man,no doubt 😎 👍
Thanks very much, I appreciate your comments
Great video. Love the idea with the wondow to oberserve the interiors. Couple question: What are lengths of those shock absorbers that you use? I know that there are 150, 165 and 190 mm options. What I could see other people do is they put a 165 mm on the front suspension and 150 mm on the back. It seems like this also solves the problem of leveling the scooter. Another question is about folding the scooter. After the installation of the rear monorim suspension is it still possible to attach the clip which is on the handlebar to the monorim hook on your scooter? Cheers.
Both my shocks are 150mm, but the 160 on the front as you say should work great to lift it up and save all the modifications I did. Yes you can still fold the handle down and clip it to the monorim hook. You will have to twist the clip on the handlebar a little.
Nice mods Alex... well done!
Just to let you know that Monorim offers the DMXE and MXRE series now with these same air shocks...unfortunately with single chamber only.
Their front suspension is a twin shock system...do you think that might be a better option than a single shock?
This will permit to pressurize less than with a single shock and it would be a redundancy security in the event of a shock failure.
Cheers,
Phil
Hi Phil, I am not 100% sure how the single chamber compares. My guess is that the dual chamber helps with top out damping, ie when the front wheel comes off the ground there may be a clunk noise as the shock goes to full extension on the single chamber unit.
A dual shock setup is redundant and not necessary in my opinion. The air shocks I have had for about 8 months now and they don't lose pressure at all. Very well made.
Thanks for an informative video , ride safe☯️
Thanks ✌️
Does the extra 12v battery still work after the ninebot has been flashed
Yes, the additional battery company has its own flash
I have my charger bag up where the handles are it’s prettt good too
Thx for sharing!
No problem!
Looks like my Dualtron Pop 😂
With all the weight you added it equals any gain you received from the extra battery, also brakes are same and the electric motor runs hotter now as well.
No, far from it. The performance gain by far outweighs the additional pounds.
EXCELLENT video. Thanks. I tried a sharkset front suspension and found it to be useless. It made me consider a rear-only suspension setup. What do you think?
I think if you were to choose only one suspension, it would be best to have only the front, not the rear. I would suggest the Monorim setup.
First of all, thanks for the info sharing.
May I ask more about your experience with the front suspension only? I will do some upgrades, but I'm not sure if I want a rear suspension. Is the rear suspension make a substantial difference? My guess is that the front could be a gamechanger, but the rear does not add so many values as the front when you upgrade the stock setup. What is your opinion about this?
You are correct in your thinking. I started with the front only and ran it like that for a while and I was happy with the modification. The air shock is important though, it makes the experience so much better and refined. However after adding the rear, it made a further improvement especially when hopping off curbs and on bumpy surfaces.
@@Nonbock Thx 4 rpl, I appreciated
Wow! Nice!
Great modifications. Have you given any thought to adding a rear view mirror to the handle bars?
I have thought about it, but I find it pretty easy to glance over my shoulder without going off course. I also thought about a helmet mounted one, but they are a bit goofy.
With the Monorim rear suspension I notice while using the stock 6" eye shock the handle bar hook did not line up with the rear hook. I modified it to 5.5" and perfecto!!! in lines up
Yes, I had to rotate the spring hook on the handlebar and do a bit of metal filing to make it work.
i literally ride mine for kilometers hands free but our footpaths and roads in Perth australia., i've got plenty of video footage on this youtube account
Excellent video! Just getting started with my Ninebot. Do you have any videos or tutorials you would recommend for changing the valve stems in the wheels? Only have about 50-75 miles on both of our scooters and starting to have valve stem failures. You're obviously a whiz with the Ninebot, and assume you've changed a few sets already with the tons of miles you're racking up. Thanks for any help, and excited to start adding some mods!
Russell, I have changed only one valve stem. A new one came with a replacement tire, so I tried installing it. I discovered that the new stem diameter was slightly larger than the original one and would not go through the hole in the rim. So I compared the size of the original stem and the new one and drilled out the hole in the wheel by that same amount. It wasn't much, about 0.2mm. After that I applied some soapy solution to the valve and it pulled through the hole without any problems. It has been fine ever since.
You said the stock suspension came with a spring and a tube but I thought there was never any suspension on the G30 Max until now with the G2 that just came out.
I ride with 1 hand and no damper all the time lol
same
Yeah, those dampers look so funny and unnecessary XD
This is what I've been looking for! Thank you very much for this marvellous video. I'm going to buy the front suspension. By the way, did the air suspension came with an adjustment guide? How would I know which set up to use?
No, except for some pressure guidelines, mostly important to note that the larger chamber needs to be a higher pressure than the smaller one. I experimented with different pressures to get the best feel. As I recall 40psi in the large chamber and 30 in the small one. Note that the seals stick to the shaft after about a day of non use. You have to bounce the scooter to free up the seal then it will be fine for the ride.
@@Nonbock thanks a lot! Immensely helpful.
I got the same exact setup as yours but when installing the front monorim I couldn’t use both black washers because I couldn’t for the lynchpin and ended up with only silver ring sent by monorim but now I have extreme front stem wobble!
One of the youtube videos on the installation of the front Monorim explains which washers to use. I remember having an issue too but got it to work OK without any slop in the steering
Thank you for this video, I wonder if brakes are enough for such a speed.
The one brake lever has two functions, initial application applies regen braking from the rear wheel and the next is the front brake. Yes in an emergency you need all that it has and it is pretty good. Most of the time I'm in regen braking and hardly use the front brake.
@@Nonbock Not modes right? Just the original regen braking?.
Correct, all original brakes. No mods.
@@Nonbock thank you for your time!
Why not replacing the bell with a nicer one? It doesn't match the grips anymore. A really nice scooter anyway 👍
Can you add a front motor on it all the weight its hard to go uphill
Cool video! How do you take out the gps tracker?
Hi, great video.
After adding the suspensions can you still fold the scooter ?
Cheers
Yes you can! It still uses the hook on the handlebar for carrying folded
I have most of these mods on mine as of late. I really want to raise the front as well. I'm not experienced with welding however - is the finished product as strong and able to take the force and impacts as before welding? Is that a consideration?
id love to know if its possible to attach extra battery to increase the range before running out of juice ? I dont rly care about better tork in hills or more speed, range is the most important for me.
It could be done, but not with the 12v battery extension I have. It would have to be a 36V battery.
sorry to ask, but where did you get the reflective stickers?
I added a link to the description. The original site I purchased from has gone, but these are the same
Great work! But, how much did all of those mods cost?? ;) @alex dell?
I haven't added it all up but I estimate about $650 or so over the cost of the scooter. I did it one mod at a time though and spread the cost which made it less painful to the wallet
That is just amazing.
Do you have any kind of insurance for it?
I’m trying to insure mine in any kind of theft or vandalism and such.
No, never thought about insuring it
Would be covered on a homeowners or renters insurance policy under personal personal property coverage.. I’m in US so not sure if that’s same where you are.
Hey mate if you see this can you tell me how to add the air vents I like that
Great walkthrough for what seems to be the ultimate upgrade to the already great ninebot max!
you mentioned that you had the front suspension installed first. What was a more significant upgrade in terms of ride comfort the rear or front suspension?
The front makes the biggest difference. I ran just the front for a while before the rear. The rear suspension comes into its own when hopping off a curb or hitting a big bump.
Did the front suspension fell unstable at all out of the box? Or was it good, I want to get one(with the air shock). Thanks 👍
No difference to the stock stability.
I did the same with the front one please tell me that the 150mm will work thanks good info.
Yes, 150mm shock length front and rear
Could you add the sound of the motor when it accelerates and at top speed?
That could be tricky. it is super stealthy because the motor is the rear wheel, no gears like on a hub drive bicycle. I have scared a lot of folks passing from behind even though I sound the bell to warn them. There's more wind noise than motor noise
@@Nonbock rear brake is a really good upgrade
Question about the battery pack, can you still fold the scooter? I use the scooter often and always put it in my trunk. Just wanted to know if it still folded down normally. Thanks!
Yes, I had to rotate the loop on the handlebar a little but there is a hook on the rear Monorim suspension and it works just like the original
Once you reach 1:40 or so, you will have a better understanding of his use of “perfect”.
So to be clear you originally bought the monorim front SPRING suspension and then swapped for the air shock sourced on alibaba and it was a clean swap / perfect fit etc ?
Yes Justin, The 150mm length shock was a direct replacement for the original spring unit that came with the Monorim. Note that the air shock seals will stick when left unused overnight or longer. You have to bounce on the scooter to unstick them at the beginning of each ride. After unsticking, they are fine for the rest of the ride until it sits a while without use. Apply some oil to the shock shaft to reduce the sticking effect. (they advise that in the info that comes with them)
@@Nonbock I just got my exa a5 what pressure should be in front and rear?
Sometimes I prefer to ride slower because of the wind chill factor 🥶
The wind noise is more of a factor for me as the speed increases, but its nice to have the extra performance
Thinking about replacing the spring suspension to air suspension too on my monorims. What’s the size of those air suspension that you have there?
150 mm long
@@NonbockThanks for the reply Alex. Is it for the front and rear?
Does the external battery has a meter to know how much juice is left? Thanks
Yes, it has a USB socket with a voltmeter display. No percentage, just volts.
cool
Front and rear shock mount kits? and where to get them. Thanks.
They were purchased from AliExpress
Thanks mate. my wife and I decided on the G30's and will do all mods as well. Coming from a Electro/Mechanical background and a CNC mill in the basement....I am ready!!
how do you find the front shock? ive read some reviews on amazon of it bottoming out causing a dead stop.
On the early design front suspension video you have seen, the front fender did not move up and down with the wheel so when the suspension compressed, the wheel would contact the fender and act like a sudden brake. The design now has a fender mount that goes up and down with the wheel and clearance remains constant. No longer an issue.
Handier than me
Have you thought of getting a GEN 2 motor to swap out the back motor ?
I think it is the Segway gen 2 motor anyway.
@@Nonbock nice
If I don't ask too much :-) could you indicate the details / links of all the accessories you have installed?
I added all the links
@@Nonbock Thanks!
i would like segway to make the scooter carbon fiber.
Front and rear air suspension model?
Thanks.
I added a link. Length is 150mm for front and rear
How long have you had the battery pack installed?
I got the extra 12v battery last August and purchased the scooter in May. Both batteries are still strong as they were when new
I purchased my Ninebot Max in September 2019 (pre-order before release), I wish I had purchased the reflective stickers a lot earlier. I can’t find them anywhere nearby, all out of stock. I live in Belgium. Ofcourse I could buy some third-party reflective stickers in a local shop but those would never match my kickscooter as the original ones do.
Great modifications. I really love the G30 Max.
GPS unit ? Looks great...
Its the bicycle speedometer. Amazon link in the description
What’s the weight?
54 lb after all the mods
