It’s crazy to think that people waited years and spent small fortunes on listening to certain pieces of classical music, maybe two or three times in their entire lives, and that the lower classes probably never heard any at all. And yet here we are, able to listen to the entire repository of human compositions with a few flicks of the finger whenever we please...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.... And, I know it's all DIGITAL. But, I still fear that I will definitely wear out Opus 23, No. 5 by the time I die. :>)

Great collection of one the most incredible composers of all time!!!!! Great complexity together with deep feelings.
I have a hard time picking my favorite composer. Fortunately, I only have to worry and fret over who is #1. It's either Rachmaninoff or Debussy. I guess I should pick the one who elicits the most volume of tears of love and appreciation. .... It's still hard.
@@oleflogger6828I wouldn't rate either of those in my top 5, but I consider Debussy far superior to Rachmaninoff. The latter is overpowering, but not in a good way. It's more like his pieces are overcooked. I understand he revised a lot, which could be the source of what I hear

Eu penso que todos os sentimentos sejam de dores, angústia, sofrimento, tristeza, desespero e lamentações. Tudo compõem Rachmaninoff, mas também, há um pouco de religioso, místico, agradável, relaxante, medicante, alegre, sorridente e profundamente hipnotizante. Ele é um dos mais complexos músicos que já existiu, suas peças, óperas, músicas, piano e toda a composição são instrumentos de sublimação das aflições humanas ao céu. Pondo todos os sentimentos reprimidos para fora, e relaxando as dores mentais que existem, como em alguns momentos aquela rara felicidade que pode ser constatado de vez em quando na música, simplesmente angelical e a um tom mais fantasmagórico, talvez um gótico estilo clássico musical.

He was talking about a specific country, not a territory. And this is not the merit of Russia, this is the merit of Rachmaninov. And the shame of Russia is that Rachmaninov never returned to the nightmare into which it was turned.

@@Greycat590вы очень плохо знаете то, о чем пытаетесь судить. После того, как он услышал музыку советских композиторов, он понял, что искусство в СССР живо и активно развивается. Именно из-за уверенности в том, что искусство в советской России погибнет, он и уехал из России на запад. В 1942 году он уже договорился о возвращении на Родину на уровне правительства СССР, на уровне Сталина. Уже был отремонтирован его дом, были даже продуманы предложения о его трудоустройстве. Помешала только смерть композитора. Кстати: к сегодняшнему дню именно на западе произошел истинный упадок культуры и попраны все христианские ценности. Я очень сомневаюсь, что Рахманинов смог бы жить на сегодняшнем западе, если ему было трудно жить на западе даже в те годы.

Хотя, я думаю, подтверждения этим сказкам нет.
Я, конечно, плохо знаю то, о чём пытаюсь рассуждать, это само собой. Однако...
Вот выдержка из заявления Рахманинова от 28.6.1941 "...независимо от отношения к большевизму и Сталину, истинные патриоты России должны помогать своей Отчизне одолеть агрессоров..."
И действительно, с момента вторжения нацистов в СССР и до своей смерти Рахманинов жертвовал на нужды РККА очень крупные суммы, то есть практически помогал в борьбе с врагом. Как мог.
Но как-то трудно представить себе, что человек, заявивший то, что приведено выше, уже через год решается вернуться к тому самому большевизму и Сталину. Причём, всё это происходит в самый разгар войны, в 1942 году, когда СССР стоит на грани поражения.
Я ещё мог бы предположить, что Рахманинов вполне мог рассматривать возможность съездить в СССР, чтобы дать там несколько концертов, но вернуться....это вряд ли.
При этом я ни минуты не сомневаюсь, что советские товарищи и тов. Сталин в первую очередь были бы счастливы возвращению Рахманинова, и были готовы наобещать ему золотые горы.
Но я никогда не поверю, что сам Рахманинов мог пойти на подобный шаг. Насколько мне известно, существует немало свидетельств о том, что его всячески зазывали вернуться (и это понятно), но нет ни единого подтверждения тому, что он был на это готов.
Впрочем, он в любом случае умер, так что теперь это уже не важно.

В 40-е годы Рахманинов лично вел переписку с высшим руководством СССР, параллельно интересуясь творческой жизнью СССР. И познакомившись с достижениями СССР в области культуры осознал, что большевизм сохранил Россию, как страну великой культуры. Он убедился, что в России по прежнему творят великие композиторы, великие художники и литераторы. Сохранилась переписка Рахманинова со Сталиным, была встреча Рахманинова с Громыко, где довольно четко обозначается заинтересованность Рахманинова в возращении. Между прочим такие же изменения в отношении новой России были не только у Рахманинова, но и у многих других бывших противников советской власти, которые даже воевали против нее в гражданскую войну. Вскоре после победы под Сталинградом Рахманинов написал краткое письмо Сталину: «Теперь я уверен, что моя Родина победит агрессоров. Я восхищен и тем, что вопреки тяжелейшим испытаниям музыкальная культура борющейся России, в том числе русского народа, продолжает удивлять мир, жива и всячески развивается. Готов согласиться, что мы, вероятно, ошибались в начале 1920-х гг., считая, что российское искусство обречено на уничтожение или перерождение…». По свидетельствам его правнучки Натали Ванамейкер-Рахманиновой и эмигрантов - друзей Рахманинова - композитора Игоря Стравинского и пианиста Владимира Горовица, Сергей Васильевич наметил новое благотворительное турне по Северной Америке, включающее исполнение Сталинградской симфонии. Дописать ее Рахманинов планировал к апрелю 1943 г. А на заключительном концерте этого тура Рахманинов собирался объявить о своем возвращении в СССР. Об этих планах знал и проживавший в США А.Ф. Керенский. Тогда же Кремль приказал срочно отремонтировать усадьбу Рахманиновых в Ивановке (Тамбовская область РСФСР). Что и было сделано в считанные недели. По данным музея-усадьбы Рахманиновых, Сергей Васильевич в 1943 г. дважды встречался с послом СССР в США А.А. Громыко и просил визу в Советский Союз. Его заверили, что с визой вопрос решен положительно, и вскоре он получит ее. Однако приступ тяжелой болезни - на сей раз последний - заставил прервать концертную деятельность С.В. Рахманинова. Вскоре он скончался. Вот это есть факты, а у вас досужие вымыслы, сплетни и недомолвки.

His first piano concerto , not included here , is a student work at age 18.The examiner cannot deduct any single mark from this work. He said to the young Rachmaninoff to please enforce.
Rachmaninoff is unique in the sense the music wasn't as bold, boisterous, or dramatic as say, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven; but was rather much more easy to listen to, and more laid back. There is not as much emotional expression, though the attention to technical detail is on another level.

Rachmaninoff's hand can stretch a 15th on the piano , almost two octaves, with super long , slender , and most powerful fingers.
FYI, a 15th is two octaves.

I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of Lukas Geniusas' playing. The pieces are beautiful themselves, but I find his playing a little too straightforward and lacking colour at times, especially for the preludes which I think could be less bashy and more wistful. I much prefer Ashkenazy. Thoughts?
Agree. Ashkenazi can also be a bit too fast to my liking. But mostly ok. Esp he does well 2nd Sonata 1913 version. But 1st Sonata is best by Idil Biret. My opinion

Вот где духовная и интеллектуальная смерть, так это на сегодняшнем разлагающемся западе. Вот на сегодняшнем антихристианском западе, где попираются все традиционные ценности, где рекламируются всяческие извращения, вот там Рахманинов бы точно не смог жить, так как являлся православным христианином.
