- Eddy Grant left British Guiana and came to Britain in 1960. Five years later, aged just 17, he founded The Equals, a pioneering multi-racial band that hit the top of the charts in 1968 with the classic Baby Come Back.
Eddy's songs were a product of the times, blending international influences whilst writing about what it meant to be young and black, living in London. Songs like "Police On My Back" and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys" continue to resonate today and in this interview Eddy talks to Alex Dyke about the success and the impact of the Equals. Eddy also reflects on a car crash that nearly cost him his life and his subsequent heart attack and collapsed lung in 1971, following which he left the Equals and the UK. - Фільми й анімація
I learned more about Mr. Grant in half an hour than Wikipedia has had for years. I'm so looking forward to his autobiography.
Ringbang For Life
Very talented man. I hope if he tours the USA he is in my state. I will go see him for sure.
This is one of The Great Black Voices that made my adolescent years memorable. Being able to listen to his music on UA-cam is so joyous, back to the 80s. Kudos Eddie Grant. Long Live you all with Billy Ocean, Eric Donaldson. You are all wonderfully created. I love you all with passion.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is a great, historical interview. This is the first I'm hearing about this. Just think..."diverse" bands did not exist until his UK band, The Equals came along, and shook up the world. And they were, as Eddy put it, enormously successful!!! I've always loved Eddy Grant. He is an international treasure and one of the greatest songwriters in the UK! Can't wait to see his upcoming biography film.
Great Interview, enjoyed learning about Eddy. A fellow Muddy. :-)
The Ecquals and Eddy Grant in a solo career,... He is a great artist and, above all, a great lyricist. The interview proves one thing: don't be put off by apparent simplicity. To write something apparently simple takes a lot of sweat.
What a fantastic interview.
Excellent interview !!! Covers all the ups and downs of the music industry in a very honest and compelling way. I was particularly touched by the car crash story being followed up by his heart attack caused by the stresses of Business. Excellent
OHH, I almost forgot. 90 degrees Inclusive. Classic!! Can you guys please re- issue. I play it for these youngsters and they go crazy.
i love eddy grant...and have just discovered the eqauls...they are sensational!!!
One of the best songs of 1968 in America.
What happened to Lincoln Gordan ? He was actually road sweeping in Enfield U.K in the 1990's ! I last saw him living in Clapton North London - skint ! Lovely guy.
Lovely man, I still love him, we were together and due to get married. Lincoln drank at times, we had a misunderstanding, and I left and cancelled the wedding. Lincoln loves music, so do I, sad we split up.
I saw Derv this year and he’s well. He was touring the States.
@@teddy1066 Any news of Lincoln ?
Eddy Grant! Bringing the RingBang. Love it!
My best pop group in the world. My memories of their visits in Zambia are still fresh.
Eddie looks amazing. What a guy. I was a huge equals fan as a child. So many happy memories listening to their music
But the BBC chap barking into the mic is way, way overdoing it. "White skinheads?" To hell with you, Wokeman.
'Peace and Love is the message' - one of the loveliest songs, Eddy wrote - lovely man.
Incredible interview. 👏 👏 👏
I Like him❤😊 i Like His music
They need to re issue 'Born Ya!' and' Mystic Syster'. Shockingly overlooked.
Much 💘 LOVE,
Love is the master ♥ key
Just found this. What a blessing!
Definitely. Reisue Born Ya and Mystic Sister. ....Good old funk.
Legend.
Great interview but where's the rest?
What about the band 'Love' surely they can lay claim to being the first band of this type or even 'The Mynah Birds'?
You'd have to include 'Love' there with the first racially diverse bands
This video, is MAJOR. MAJOR, MAJOR, MAJOR. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🎶❤
Love Eddy
Yeah. The Equals. They were Equal Black White Mixed. Equals says it all.
Not exactly. Three Blacks and only two Whites. Which is why Eddie had originally planned on calling the group "The Almost Equals."
Keep Hope ALIVE...
1❤️👊🏾
The presenter seems a cool guy. Who is he?
Alex Dyke, great bloke works for the BBC in the South.
Eddy i think the foundations were properly one of the first mixed race bands ( build me up buttercup) 1967
Where’s part 2?
Exactly.
I’m definitely up for part two!
❤❤❤
Loveeddy
"Talk diversity..." With this star?
what a geezer, so talented, but how funny 'cut me from bollock to arsehole' lol
Is’nt Guyana geographically in South America?
Yes. But culturally we're just as much Caribbean. Hence people always say we're Caribbean. Hope this makes a little sense.
I love Eddy Grants music, ever since Killer On The Rampage first released. But my opinion of him has been a bit marred, when I discovered he doesn’t allow his music on Spotify or any other streaming service. If bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the like can do it, what makes Eddy’s music so special? “Get over yourself”! Also, “legend”?! No. Definitely not. One good good album and 3 memorable hits, do not make a legend. Eddy should be humble and grateful that anyone still remembers his music!
interviewer needs to calm down and let him finish the stories. jesus christ.
I agree. The guy is terminally uncool. However, Eddy rises above it.
